Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V5! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 10/28
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I've been waiting for COD4 to go on sale to $10 or lower for a long time. It hasn't hit my buying point in several sales and I'm beginning to wonder if it ever will.
I hated Borderlands before it was cool to hate Borderlands.
I don't hate Borderlands but I wasn't excited for a sequel. I bought it on one of its many, Magicka-like sales on Steam and I guess it was worth the $10 I paid? I spent many hours playing it and it's good for when you're in one of those moods where you just feel like shooting things, but it's all rather mindless and the way the story ends makes you feel like Gearbox was having a joke at your expense. I have most of the DLCs for the first game and I gave up trying to get through Zombie Island because it was just aggravating. Given how much I enjoyed the first one, the sequel isn't really on my "play-as-soon-as-you-possibly-can" list.

Retro City Rampage is now available on Steam and 10% off ($13.49) until October 13th.

This 8-bit nostalgic throwback warps open-world carjacking BACK TO THE... '80s. Play 60+ story missions and 40+ arcade challenges. "Borrow" vehicles and outrun the law while mowing down your fellow citizens! Jump on pedestrians for coins, or use them for target practice with over 25 weapons and POWER-UPS! WHOA!
Genre: Action, Adventure, Indie, Racing
The Humble Ebook Bundle.

pay more than the average and you still get no steam keys. but you do get old man's war. which if I recall, was pretty decent. and the average is going down pretty fast.

epub, mobi, pdf, and DRM free files.

Hm. Anybody know whether these can be readily loaded into Google Play Books? I haven't figured out how to (or whether it's possible to) sideload books into GP Books yet, which is part of what's holding me back from grabbing the Be Mine 5.

Wow, a lot of conversation about whether Borderlands 2 is fun or not. Ladies and Gentlemen, it is not fun. It is boring. A lot of people will disagree with me, and I am ok with that, but I actually liked the first one a lot for its mix of FPS and RPG, even though its quests were boring and you spent a lot of time trudging back and forth to turn stuff in. It seemed like the MMO aspects it copied really bogged it down, but parts of it were really fun. Reviewers were all saying that the second one was better, but I still find myself bored by the same things. Each quest means a long haul out to the middle of nowhere to kill eight things or collect eight things or whatever. The writing is funny, but not hilarious, and it only sometimes manages to distract from the fact that you are once again running sixteen miles to go get a car to drive another thirty miles to pick up 20 pine cones and then make the whole reverse trip to get some exp. Once again, it has parts that are really fun, but I usually find most encounters either too hard/long or too easy/short. I have taken to calling it Boringlands 2. I am probably not the first.

The Humble Book Bundle is interesting. Pirate Cinema just came out a week ago. The only one I have read, Old Man's War, was pretty good, but I found that he captured the voice of an old man a little too well, and the main character's crankiness annoyed me from the first page. The rest of the stuff is mostly newer stuff by authors I have read, so I will probably pick it up.

I am slightly tempted by today's daily and the Risen franchise deal, but I am enjoying XCom enough that I can wait for a better sale.

Double Fine sale

Psychonauts - 50% off
Costume Quest - 50% off
Stacking - 50% off
Double Fine Bundle - 50% off (includes above)
Iron Brigade - 33% off

I think the problem might just be that you are playing solo (i dont know if you are). I remember loving Borderlands 1 and played it for dozens of hours with friends. We went through Playthrough 1 and 2 and all the DLCs (except claptrap because it wasnt out at the time). It probably wouldve gotten old real fast if I played it solo. Since I played it with friends, with voice chat and all, it was so much more enjoyable.

I imagine BL2 will feel the same way. From what Ive seen through reviews and videos, the formula is relatively the same. Ill wait till its GOTY with all the dlcs though.
Anyone have an opinion on today's daily deal, Babel Rising? Looks like $5 might be the right price if the gameplay is fun.
I played it for about 30-40 minutes on XBLA and didn't care much for it. It was initially made as a 99 cent mobile game and I think it works better in that space than as a $5-$10 PC/console game.
Man. So tempted by Risen 2.
A thread regular (I think it could've been Motoki) played a lot of it shortly after release. Sadly, I can't quite remember if they loved/liked/hated it but they put a lot of time into it.

Edit: twas indeed Motoki, so chances of getting a review are slim to...
You can wait till it hits 75% off. Don't fall into the trap!
Yup. Unless you plan on playing right now, wait till that 75%.
We do not speak of it!
You can tell him.

See, he gave up PC gaming and only buys console games at full price now. So he has no use for this site.

Motoki liked it, I know.

Considering I haven't played the first Risen, it would be ridiculous for me to get Risen 2 without it being 75% off. So the wait begins.

Really?

Surprised I missed that.

I would have assumed Coconut Queen drove him mad.

Went back and found the departure post from last month.

That's a shame.

I liked Motoki.
Ouch. (For those interested, my take on Risen 1.)
Risen 1 is fine -- I glanced over your impressions but didn't really see any strong negatives (other than the fact you just might not be into these types of games). Oblivion is flat out horrible and shouldn't be dubbed a 'hardcore RPG' in any sense of the definition. That said, I found Risen 1 had flaws particularly with the linearity towards the end and the laughably bad final boss encounter. Overall it plays like a somewhat updated amalgam of Gothics 1 and 2.

How does Retro City Rampage handle different resolutions? Does it keep the gameplay area 4:3 and scale the "cabinet" borders? I love the look with the arcade instructions around the edge. That was a huge part of the arcade experience for me studying the special move lists and combos or character stats. So cool.
omg dont get me started on Risen 2 lol. dont buy any of the Risen games there not that good.
And you hold yourself out as a reviewer/writer?

Sadly, he could probably get himself a gig at IGN.

Just activated he $5 Front Mission Evolved retail box I got from newegg. 10GB DL, wow. It's on a single dvd, must be super compressed.

Eh, just summarize it by saying he didn't have a spine for criticism/disagreements. He apparently hated me because I didn't accept his friend request for 24 hours (maybe less?), so he withdrew it. Then later commented how it made him angry that I didn't accept.

Wow, I finally found someone.else who didn't care for Oblivion. It might have been I got hit by the Vampire bug, but it seemed kind of dry to me, and the towers got very repetitive. It never got me excited to play. KOTN was the only part I enjoyed.
Again, might have been the stupid bug that forced me to only play at night and just made me constantly angry at Bethesda quality control.

Eh, I've never been able to get into the Elder Scrolls series. Too much free choice, I think. I can see the appeal for others, but I play games for the stories. And not the ones I make - I like to be involved in something pre-created, and watch it unfold from the inside.

*shrug* I keep hoping/wanting to like the Elder Scrolls games, but they just never seem to be able to pique my interest.

yessir. I have Risen in one of my VOID slots right now. Should DL and play it first. From what I heard 2 is worse than 1, but who knows. If a pirate RPG appeals to you I don't think you have that many games to choose from.

Thats pretty much the only reason I've ever had interest in Risen 2. There is a big lack of pirate rpgs. Sadly due to all the negativity I've heard about the game I will wait til it hits $10 or less before I bite. Probably around $5.

I've never been a fan of the main stories in the Elder Scrolls games, but I actually think some of the side stories you get from the various factions/guilds or random quests are some of the more engaging and interesting stories in gaming. I felt the same way about the newer Fallout games. I've always felt that the best way to enjoy those games is to avoid the main quest and enjoy everything else about the world.

I guess I've never managed to actually get to any of the faction/guild questlines to experience them. I think I get bored long before I get the chance.

I ended up with a copy of Skyrim recently, so I'm hoping eventually it'll suck me in, but I'm not holding my breath.

I've only ever played Skyrim and recently picked up Oblivion.

My main issue with Skyrim is they call it free choice/play but it really is not. I played with the purpose of being the Serial Killer of Skyrim, but no matter how covert my kills were, it still marked up my "bad person" score and made it impossible for me to go into certain places and complete quests without leveling up to the point of being able to kill all guards.

I know most games, from GTA to Sleeping Dogs, tend to be the same, but it irks me. If I sneak into a house at midnight and kill everyone while they are sleeping, guards shouldn't magically show up out of nowhere and it shouldn't affect game play unless anyone sees me.
I'll preface my remarks by saying my usual 'stomping grounds' for game discussion is a seedy little hole in the internet known as RPG Codex. For unvarnished opinions on most of today's RPGs and other genres you might want to check it out. That said, CAG a is great resource for spotting deals and some discussion on the quality of games on sale but I try to remember I'm sort of a 'guest' here and don't launch into massive diatribes against the current state of the AAA industry as I realize my tastes probably diverge quite a bit.

My big problem with games like Oblivion is that they ultimately devolve into E-LARP simulators. There's basically no challenge or limiting circumstances. No choice and consequence, no mutually exclusive character development, etc. While I certainly don't like railroaded and directed experiences it is nice to have a game where the world just isn't some virtual playground where you can roll over everything at almost any level. Moreover, as you note a lot of the locations were hyper generic and repetitive. Not to mention Gamebryo is a horrendous engine to do an ARPG on. I could go on and on but... again... not really the place for it. Suffice to say I think Piranha Bytes (prior to Risen 2 and excluding the poorly designed Gothic 3) did a good job of balancing things and giving people a somewhat 'free roam' approach while still having a directed story that presented challenging obstacles, proper choice and consequence, character development, etc. Risen 2 just got to... ahem... 'mainstream!'
Eh, just summarize it by saying he didn't have a spine for criticism/disagreements. He apparently hated me because I didn't accept his friend request for 24 hours (maybe less?), so he withdrew it. Then later commented how it made him angry that I didn't accept.
Going back and looking at his farewell post last month, I was under the impression his beef was with Idiotekque.

Maybe it was multiple things.

Dunno. Over and gone, I guess.

The dynamic leveling of enemies is absolutely one of my biggest complaints in Bethesda's games. I hated it in Oblivion, though I think Fallout: New Vegas made it work slightly better (possibly because Fallout:NV actually had a fantastic amount of narrative content I was interested in seeing, and the combat was kind of filler to me.

To me it really cheapens gaining levels and the satisfaction gained from supposedly late-game content.

Who left because of Motoki? Did they come back now that he left?

Nobody that I know of, I was referring to Motoki himself leaving.

I know, your post was just the most recent regarding to Motoki so I quoted you. But I thought there was someone prior to the whole Idiotekque and Motoki argument that argued with Motoki and left, or at least stopped posting in the thread.
