Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V6! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

With the V6 Thread, we're trying a slight formatting change. We used to list every possible Steam deal in the OP, but they change too frequently for anyone to keep up with (even in the Wiki format). So now, we'll leave regular minor sales out of the OP. This post will keep track of major sales (Winter sale, etc.), Steam deals available through other sellers (like Amazon), Preorder deals, and Group Buys.

I would still greatly appreciate help from you folks at home in keeping this smaller-scale OP up-to-date. This is a Wiki post so anyone can contribute. Wiki instructions:
Thanks for your help! If you notice a sale has ended, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see something does need to be added, then kindly add it to the list.

Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.

Steam Sales - Updated 1/22

CAG Threads Featuring Steam Games on Sale Elsewhere - Updated 1/9

Preorder Deals - Updated 1/10
Group Buy Deals - Updated 1/9/13

Free Stuff - List needs updating with F2P games!
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

Steam's explanation and list of Steam-activatable keys

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card. The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Brutal Legend isn't really proof of the more outlandish registry stuff. It was reported around the same time when gaming sites all found the 20 or so games but it actually showed up earlier. The hidden ones were all just that, hidden. They were only found because Steam created community hubs for them. They were actually still called Test Apps in the actual registry, people just looked up the app number and found the hubs. Brutal Legend had a named registry entry.
Motoki, you were quite down on the Fable III DLC, is any of it worthwhile?
Oh I just liked poking fun at the dog suit DLC and the fact that everyone was going nuts wanting it just because they had to catch em all
even though I do that too! :p

I haven't actually played it. I know surprising, right? But I have heard from some of those who have played the various DLC that Traitor's Keep is good (*Edit: or not. See louiedog's comment below) but the rest are not so great and/or not so useful and easily skipable.

I played it all on the 360. I accidentally redeemed a code for Traitor's Keep that I was going to give away. I found it really dull and repetitive. It felt like they created a 60 minute piece of content and then padded it out.

Of course that may just be me. The reason I accidentally redeemed it and didn't plan to use it myself is that after playing Fable 3 I was absolutely done with that game and wanted no more.

So how long after joining steamgifts did you all start winning games? It seems that people in this thread are constantly winning stuff. You're all extremely lucky given that the number of people that enter into a single giveaway is in the thousands. Unless you're super diligent and sit and F5 the main page and enter into the hour long giveaways. Then you have a 1 in 500 chance of winning as opposed to a 1 in 2500.

Part of it has to do with which giveaways you enter. Group and private giveaways will yield better odds by their very nature. I feel your pain though, I've entered over 4,300 giveaways and I've won 10 giveaways: 3 group giveaways and 7 public giveaways. Two of those ten wins were developer (everyone wins) giveaways.

I think most people who win a lot are in groups that do a lot of group giveaways. It's really a random luck of the draw in the main giveaways. I used to be more diligent in spending up my points every day and entering, but I would go months with no wins outside of group wins. Even now, I think I average a non-group win every 3-6 months.

Yeah, I've won a few group giveaways. I don't even bother with public giveaways. If you join the right groups, you've got a decent chance of winning.

Just wanted to chime in real quick on Giana... this game started off incredibly strong for me. I was blown away by the visuals, the music, and the interesting gameplay mechanics. As I went through the game, I became more and more impressed by the myriad of different mechanics they continued to introduce, sometimes in outright fiendish ways if you desired all of the stars and secrets. Unfortunately, the visuals and music started to wear thin by the second world, and by the third world they really started to grate on my nerves. I'm still playing it casually (I have 2 or 3 worlds left) so I can beat the game, and I really do love the gameplay, but I was a bit disappointed that the initial sense of wonder I experienced could not be sustained.

Overall though, I really did like the game quite a bit. It's challenging but it never felt unfair (a similar sentiment many people place on games like Super Meat Boy and Hotline: Miami, though Giana Sisters is a fair bit easier than those games, at least for me). I think it's definitely worth it at this current price, especially if you love platformers like me and yet are really bored out of your mind by the snooze-worthy gameplay of the recent 2D Mario games. Although Rayman Origins is still my favorite platformer of this decade by far, Giana Sisters probably comes closer than any other game to that top throne!
anyone know when Brutal legend is comin out?
I remember wanting that game to be so badass. Then it came out and I got it for my PS3 along with Uncharted 2 and Batman Arkham Asylum at Toys R Us as part of the buy 3 for the price of 2 sales.

I remember looking forward to that. I couldn't wait. And it was great. I was having a jolly time playing a decent adventure title and then, WHAM!

It was a horrible RTS using a console controller. And that Tim Schaefer guy at Double Fine was making doctoral theses about the PROPER way in which to play the game to explain how easy and awesome BL is. And I remember shaking my head and taking the disc out. Sticking the disc into the case. Sealing it away forever... until I sold the game to Gamestop a day later.

So I suppose its modern day equivalent is Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Those were swell times. And even as I sold it I thought, "If this was on PC, it might actually be good if they gave it PC-like RTS controls, but they were adamant it would never come to PC."

Yet here it is. Hm. I can't wait for a Steam sale on it. Preferably 75% off to make up for all that money I lost buying it on PS3 the first time.

^_^ Ah thanks! (At one point in Jan, I got Fable III and Risen II mixed up.) Yeah, reviews were looking that way, oh boy, dog suit, knight suit, dog skins. Understone was slammed by IGN (and like 22 min long). GameSpot and IGN both were more favarable to Traitor's Keep, but it seemed to be a bit of a mixed bag and skippable. I also know I'm being cranky since the DLC grab bag is $4.70 while I only paid $5 for Fable III+TLC.

Thanks for that! I think I'm just going to skip all the DLC for now, if I want more after playing it, I'll reconsider.
only thing i even want is demigod.....
Yeah, this is a weak gala bundle. I own all the Steam games from other bundles (besides Demigod which I got in a 4pack)

Ah, ok. Thanks guys. I guess I'll have to try and finaggle myself into some groups then. Could I possibly/maybe/if you want to get an invite to BGCQ? My feelings won't be hurt if I'm rejected.

If IG didn't have Demigod, I'd be passing till I saw the bonuses. Demigod is one of those games I've looked at several times, but never threw dead presidents at.

Finally beat dark souls and the DLC. if this game is sitting in your backlog I definitely suggest you give it a whirl. Probably my favorite game of the current gen and in my top 3 of all time. Just a brilliant game with unbelievable variety and enemy design. I think I'm gonna take a hiatus from gaming for a while because it just took so much out of me.
[...]the bonuses[...]
Speaking of bonuses. I've just noticed that 2 of 3 unlockables are music albums. Even more failure.
Speaking of bonuses. I've just noticed that 2 of 3 unlockables are music albums. Even more failure.
/facepalm. HH or bust. I'm not paying $5.50 just for Demigod. #-o

Even a HH group buy doesn't make this bundle good, for me at least. I have everything except for 7.62mm (drm-free), Talisman Prologue (no interest), and Demigod.. which has been less than $2 in a 4 pack on Steam..

The new Indie Gala is just a copy of the Humble Introversion bundle, with a few added games.
only thing i even want is demigod.....
No, you don't.

And yeah, general response: this is just a rehash of the Introversion bundle. Wouldn't even get this in a happy hour unless they add some interesting stuff as bonuses. Not expecting much from the Indie Royale tomorrow (they always underwhelm me), either. Hopefully Humble comes out with another one as it's been about six weeks or so for them.
its like they made it with you in mind
SERIOUSLY! I loved loved loved Sniper Elite V2 and I love Zombies. I'm pre ordering this, hopefully hosting a four pack to get it even cheaper.
Disappointing, over half the bundle is repeats. Demigod and Talisman Prologue seem to stand out though.
Yeah. I only want Demigod to have it in my library. I don't want to play it. Talisman Prologue might be interesting, but not nearly enough for full bundle price.

That looks amazing. I wasn't able to get into the first Sniper Elite, though (I think my problem was mostly controls and just figuring out what I was doing). Did V2 make a lot of improvements over the first one that would make me want to give the series another shot?

I'll be honest, I have never played V1. I have it sitting in my inventory right now. V2 was my first Sniper Elite game and I loved it. The x-ray bullet cam was freaking amazing and I have no issues whatsoever with the controls. Also has the Kill Hitler DLC which made the game even more awesome. You could always buy in low with the Expansion (it is standalone) and if you like it then buy V2 later.

I noticed the Steam Daily Deal, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, but then I noticed GOG's current discounted title: Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams.

The GOG version is DRM-Free, includes some minor bonuses, and, most CAGly of all, is 9 cents less than the Steam version.

I'm only torn about whether I should jump at the deal. Motoki, care to push me off the fence?

EDIT: I happened to find Motoki's opinion two pages back. Nevertheless, I'm still mulling.

Steam version has achievements, if you care about that. Personally, I'm interested in the game but I'm going to hold off. It's a daily deal on GOG and Steam on the same day. The Trine franchise was also a daily deal the other day. I feel like a humble bundle is brewing soon (possibly this week) and Trine 2 + Giana Sisters might be included, but I could be wrong.. just seems way too suspicious to me.

Maybe watch some gameplay videos of it? It's got much better production values than your average indie game.

Edit: D'OH! There's a demo, didn't realize that. Thanks Ashes.

Try the demo on steam.

I've only vaguely heard the names of the games in the new indie gala, so I clicked on them to watch the video and it's a little frighting how little gameplay is shown in these "trailers". Almost makes you think they have something to hide...

If you host a 4 pack I'd like to get in if possible, that looks pretty awesome.

Also I know its not steam, but I am pretty sure System Shock 2 comes out on gog tomorrow so I'm looking forward to giving that a whirl. Didnt get too into it as a youth but want to play it now

Dude, you've got a point there - Being discounted on two services at once definitely strikes me as curious. Has it been long enough for either of those two titles to be included in an Indie Bundle, though?

That's an interesting question on its own, I suppose; Botanicula didn't need much time to end up in a Humble Bundle.

It's been long enough for Trine 2 to be in a bundle. Giana Sisters is a more recent release, so it might be a little odd for it to be bundled before it hits 75% off on Steam, but stranger things have happened. Look at Party of Sin, that was released in December and it'll be in Be Mine Anniversary tomorrow lol.

The Gala Store actually has a deal that might be more attractive to some.

The "Sacred Disciples" Bundle has Steam keys for Sacred Gold (for $0.99), Disciples II: Gallean's Return and Disciples II: Rise of the Elves (all three for $3.99).

Not bad if you don't have any of the games.

I'm likewise unimpressed by the actual IG bundle.

First three to PM me can get in on a Snoipah Leet Zombies bundle for $9. Paypal or Amazon Gift Cards.

Check the global achievement stats for your favorite games. They're almost always depressing. A staggeringly small quantity of people have beaten Shank and Shank 2.

I really enjoyed Giana Sisters and need to get back to it.

Yo be fair, I haven't gotten there yet because backlog .

Oh man Test Drive Unlimited 2 is right up my alley for driving games. It's not a super sim like GT5 (not that I hate them, I just don't know how to set up car), and it's not ultra arcade either. Plus it has a god awful story, and you can get plastic surgery. Although it crashed like 20 mins in for me, so no clue if it was just a random bug or if it was Steam going down for like 2 mins doing it. Also I wish it didn't eat up my processor like close to maxing it out, but oh well. It's still a fun time.

And the Humble Botanicula Bundle had a $5 min for steam keys. In kneejerk reaction I have them $0.25, the lowest I've paid for any bundle (And I've been buying since the original Humble Bundle.)

Well that's the interesting thing with the achievement stats is that you see the relative dropoff between the progress based achievements. 93% started playing and then Giana has a pretty sharp dropoff.

TDU2 doesn't seem to be a very optimized game (it's not bad, but it could be better). I've gotten a few TDU2 crashes, but only when atl-tabbing. I suffered two disconnects but that might have been due to bad latency spikes on my side. This is over quite a bit of play, I can leave Ibza now for HI, (just finishing a couple events before heading out).

I was gonna comment that I think global achievements count people who've never fired up the game, but if that's accounted for already... lul?
