Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V6! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

With the V6 Thread, we're trying a slight formatting change. We used to list every possible Steam deal in the OP, but they change too frequently for anyone to keep up with (even in the Wiki format). So now, we'll leave regular minor sales out of the OP. This post will keep track of major sales (Winter sale, etc.), Steam deals available through other sellers (like Amazon), Preorder deals, and Group Buys.

I would still greatly appreciate help from you folks at home in keeping this smaller-scale OP up-to-date. This is a Wiki post so anyone can contribute. Wiki instructions:
Thanks for your help! If you notice a sale has ended, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see something does need to be added, then kindly add it to the list.

Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.

Steam Sales - Updated 1/22

CAG Threads Featuring Steam Games on Sale Elsewhere - Updated 1/9

Preorder Deals - Updated 1/10
Group Buy Deals - Updated 1/9/13

Free Stuff - List needs updating with F2P games!
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

Steam's explanation and list of Steam-activatable keys

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card. The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I gotta watch Rove lose his mind live on Fox News as it happened.

Best. TV. Ever.

And Megan Kelley has really great legs.

When she could barely walk down two steps, yelled at the cameraman to not be too close even though she was WALKING INTO HIM, the sound cutting out down the hallways just when she said it would... and then when they came back from break and you can tell she had sent her resume to CNN and wants to be done with Rove. It was a hilarious sinking ship.
Can anyone recommended Condemned? I feel like years ago I really wanted to play it but never got around to it.
I enjoyed both titles years ago when each respectively came out.

I cannot gaurantee if they have aged all that well but seeing as they are still within this generation I would suspect that would not be an issue.

I greatly enjoyed the atmosphere of the games and personally liked them more than the FEAR titles.

Love the first Condemned on the 360. Several years since I've played it though...was considering a purchase myself. If I recall, it's not terribly long but it's fun. Condemned 2...wasnt so hot.
Thanks for those votes of confidence. I decided to chance it on Vegas 1 as well. (Worst case, I have an XP install on this machine -- 1GB videos cards really eat a chunk out of available RAM on XP-32bit.)

Personally, I'd say if you want to try a Rainbow Six game, get Rainbow Six 3. It doesn't look too old, and it hasn't been too simplified either. The Vegas games are ok, but R6 3 makes them look like Call of Duty, by comparison.

For example, in Rainbow Six 3, you start each mission by selecting international specialists for your squad, choosing all of their weapons and equipment, drawing up a plan of attack on a map (as best you can without knowing all the enemy placement) and then going in, controlling one squad member, though you can switch to the others if the one you're controlling dies (the deaths are permanent in between missions).

In Vegas, it just sort of throws you into roughly linear level where you can give orders to 3 or so squad mates, but it also plays partially like a cover shooter (going into third person when you get into cover). It's still fun, mind you, but not in a super tense Rainbow Six way.

I'm sure they haven't aged well but when they were released they were enjoyable. Combat in 1 is kind of stiff, 2 is a little more fluid.
I can certainly commend both Condemned 1 & 2 for trying to pull off what they did with their respective stories but that being said the story goes plain idiotic, especially in 2.

All in all I say $5 isn't too bad. I would wait for a pack of both 1 and 2 together for $5. I don't see 2 on Steam tho :/ That might make 1 a little more stale as the ending leaves it open for a sequel. And most things from 1 aren't explained until 2.
Viking Battle of Asgard is 4.50 over at Gamersgate. Cheapest its' been I think by itself.
I'd probably grab it at that price if I hadn't heard it was a sloppy port with poor optimization.

Thanks. I was considering it, since I'd seen a bunch of forum chatter on SPUF that seemed to hold Rainbow Six 3 in unusually high regard. I'm glad to hear it should hold up okay graphically (yeah, I'm a little superficial, but in fairness I didn't like most 3D graphics from 1995 to 2002 back in the day.) For $2.50, I'll give it a shot. =)
If it isn't free, I'm not picking it up. Hotline Miami has Humble Indie Bundle 10 written all over it. I can wait.
I agree, but I consider it as BTA material. There is high chance that you can grab it cheaper by getting it for $2.5 with $1 bundle than buying it BTA for $5-6+. That's how I ended with Legend of Grimrock.

Condemned 2 was never released for PC. At this point it's unlikely to ever be ported.

I pretty much have no interest in playing the first now on PC. Why don't companies think this through?

When I didn't see it on Steam, and with it being old already, I pretty much expected it never got a PC port.
I pretty much have no interest in playing the first now on PC. Why don't companies think this through?
As expected you wouldn't want it now. It really needs the follow up that Condemned 2 was to really flesh out the story. Again I commend them for trying what they did with the story even though it ultimately failed. Without Condemned 2, Condemned 1 just kind of falls flat at the end.

Companies need to learn to follow through with a series like this, especially when they are crucial storylines instead of side stories or spin offs. This is certainly a debacle. The biggest one I can think of off of the top of my head is that Fable The Lost Chapters got a PC port and so did Fable 3, but Fable 2 never got a PC port.

Condemned is a great game, or at least was for a launch title on the XBox 360. Gave me a few jumps but didn't care much for the final run/ending.

The second one was kinda whack but had It's charms It's on way, like the retarded multiplayer mode that for some reason I could just not put down.

Anyone play the original Dawn of War games? I have the GOTY edition from a Steamgifts and all of the Dawn of War II stuff. I'm only missing Soulstorm and Dark Crusade... are they worth it for the single player campaign only? Or am I safe just playing the GotY edition and moving on to DoW II?

Thanks!

If there is still an online community for Vegas 1, I definitely recommend it. The campaign is a pretty good challenge as well but it's short.

Glad to see the GTA Pack back!

Personally, Dark Crusade was my favorite from the original Dawn of War, but it's an entirely separate campaign in the sequel, so you won't miss much by skipping it.

Your icon always reminds me I need to make Freeman cosplay for my fiance who looks JUST like him. ROWR.

I thought it was OK for a rental (360 version), but I didn't like it nearly as much as the Silent Hill series.

Thinking about Nexuiz since it's a dollar, but it has pretty bad reviews.

Condemned on PC is terrible, no controller support. Is not supported anymore and is pretty much abandonware. Problem is on PC it never worked really to begin with, probably a last ditch attempt to milk some money out of it when released is the feeling I get.

Not only that but it's a pure multiplayer game that no one plays anymore.

That was epic. Maybe even better than O'Reilly's "Tide goes in, tide goes, you can't explain that" out moment.

The game's nearly a decade old. It's hardly abandonware unless you want to qualify 80 percent of PC games that way given the way most PC updates are (as in, within the first year or two).
Not only that but it's a pure multiplayer game that no one plays anymore.
Thanks for the warning. Won't bother then, since I might not even get around to playing it for awhile anyway.

Therein lies the problem, yes. Unfortunetly, multiplayer only games market is spread too thin these days among too many games to keep these 'less appealing' games afloat with players.

Yep, I have no idea why indie/smaller devs start out making multiplayer only games -- almost always ends in disaster.

How is Soulstorm? I heard it was... not good.

I might just pick up Dark Crusade, but if I buy Soulstorm as well... that's the cost of the whole pack right there...

Well at the very least, I hope you're not staying up just to see what the next Flash Sale is. Now that the sale has been going on for a few days, I find both those and the "Community Choice" (as well as the daily deals) depressing.

Actually, this whole sale kinda sucks.

Yes. I completely agree.

Has anyone been happy with the Steam sale thus far? Anyone even been mildly content?

Its like the sale went live, and Valve is the last to know. Its like GamersGate's Bethesda screw-up in reverse: "Oh sh*t, the sale started! We better come up with some great prices on some quality games ASAP!"

I'm perfectly content with it, and I think it's comparable to any of the previous sales. I have only bought one game, but that's mostly due to my backlog being huge, and I have a lot of patience now.
People bitched and moaned hardcore about the summer sale too.
Really??? I personally think it was decent *sigh* Oh if I only had more money to spend then.....

Thats sorta my point. Every sale is always the worst sale. Until the next.

I will agree though that this day has been lame. Though that Dawn of War 2 pack is one of the best values ever on Steam. I just imagine a lot of frequent sale hunters own too much of it by now.

False. Summer Sale 2011 was the second best Steam Sale, and the following Winter Sale was the best Steam Sale to date.

:booty:

My opinion of this Steam sale is that it's full of mediocre deals for games that I'd be interested in buying if the deals were better, whereas the last couple of sales have been good deals for games that I bought during the last few sales.

tl;dr version:
This sale: mostly mediocre deals, but not repeated [from last sales.]
Last sale: mostly good deals, but majority repeated.

The way I see it.

A) Steam is huge now, firmly established, and will make sales regardless if it's the 'best price'
B) Who didn't see the hype before the sale began, that encourages people to be ready to buy games, and some inevitably will
C) They want the lesser deals to come out first, and the best deals later, I imagine. We'll probably see the most enticing deals later on.

But a number of these sales would be enticing to people who aren't as 'well versed' as some of us CAGs. If I wasn't well aware of all the bundles available out there, Fly'n for 50% off, which just got added to steam recently isn't a bad price. It's just not a good price for a CAG.

I preferred the ticket booth to coal mining, myself. The possible rewards weren't as high, but the crushing defeats weren't as low.
