Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V6! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

With the V6 Thread, we're trying a slight formatting change. We used to list every possible Steam deal in the OP, but they change too frequently for anyone to keep up with (even in the Wiki format). So now, we'll leave regular minor sales out of the OP. This post will keep track of major sales (Winter sale, etc.), Steam deals available through other sellers (like Amazon), Preorder deals, and Group Buys.

I would still greatly appreciate help from you folks at home in keeping this smaller-scale OP up-to-date. This is a Wiki post so anyone can contribute. Wiki instructions:
Thanks for your help! If you notice a sale has ended, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see something does need to be added, then kindly add it to the list.

Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.

Steam Sales - Updated 1/22

CAG Threads Featuring Steam Games on Sale Elsewhere - Updated 1/9

Preorder Deals - Updated 1/10
Group Buy Deals - Updated 1/9/13

Free Stuff - List needs updating with F2P games!
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

Steam's explanation and list of Steam-activatable keys

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card. The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I don't know about games but their advertising/marketing department was awesome back then. Just looking at the photo makes me want to buy it, whatever it is.

You know I have had enough to drink at this point that I don't give two shits about this pro/anti Origin bitch fest. I have to say is Mission Runway and some alcohol is a good combo.
When I tried it, the metro start menu is just not good to use with mouse/keyboard, yes there are 3rd party apps you can use to hide it and everything, but they all want more money :p (luckily I only paid $15 for windows 8 so not a huge loss, when it does eventually work, if that ever happens, I will most likely use it on another build that isn't for gaming)

the deal-breaker was that a lot of my games just had compatibility issues. Beyond the metro start menu it is a skinned windows 7 that just breaks all your stuff you have come to use alot of apps/games.

is it pretty? yes, the visual appearance of W8 is great, at least to me

Does it work? No...just no. To me, W7 just works.

and Merry Christmas! to those who are celebrating tomorrow. If you don't then Happy Holidays to you :)
Ah, interesting. compatibility issues seem rampant, something we all saw coming with Win8. I love the functionality of Win7.

I had a few good drinks myself/

wtb castle crashers going on sale slightly more. Haven't played it since it first came out and want to play it on pc with a bud /=

My main problem with Origin is that the one fucking game that I want on it never ever ever goes on sale on Steam and the Origin version is wallowing in this:

My pack or expansion DLC in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning isn't working. What do I do?

We are aware that sometimes your purchased DLC for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning may not activate (or function) properly. We're very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

It's has fun gameplay though repetive and short. Bought it full price on 360 and found it worth it.
I don't really see where so much of the bandwagon hate for Origin comes from. While EA does have some pretty shady business practices, its also been proven that the "Origin is spyware" rant is BS. Origin does a bunch of things better than Steam, it has a better, working offline mode, it has a better messaging system (you can msg offline users), it was the first to allow you to select your install location (miracle for SSD users), it has a smoother, faster interface than Steam's, it gives you automatic backup copies for EA games you have installed, and it offers twitch.tv streaming. While at the end of the day I still prefer Steam over Origin since Steam's client has more features and better sales, but I don't really see where all of the hate comes from besides generic bandwagon "hurr durr EA" hate.
Ah, didn't know that about the install location. I had built my computer right before the summer and I had it on my SSD. What do you mean by automatic backup copies for games? Do you mean save data? When I tried it, it seemed way buggier and more sluggish than Steam. A lot of the hate they get I'd say is justified, especially with the whole Online Pass things and how they have like 5 different sport franchises that follow the CoD business strategy - barely improve anything and call it a new game. Not only that, there was the whole day one, on-disc DLC fiasco which again is behavior I don't want to support. Again, my boycotting it and not supporting EA is more of a statement, because I don't want the others in the industry to follow their footsteps.
I don't know about games but their advertising/marketing department was awesome back then. Just looking at the photo makes me want to buy it, whatever it is.
Yep, the idea was that the game developers were 'rockstars' so they made the games look like albums. In the inside 'jacket' they always featured big photos of the developers and included little blurbs about them. Don't have anything like that these days. More examples:
But yeah, Steam is basically devolving into the 'DRM platform' of choice. Customer service wise they have always been poor. And now sales wise they are getting destroyed by Amazon, GG, etc.

Like I said earlier, eventually we should change this thread title to: Games That Activate on Steam Deal Thread.
Thinking about it some, the way things are going does make a lot of sense. The earlier Steam sales were likely not just about encouraging people to buy more, but also raising awareness of Steam and getting more people to use it. The fantastic deals and minigame sorts of things was great for spreading word-of-mouth. Now that Steam has gotten as big as it has and controls such a large share of the PC gaming market, they can sit back some and don't have to offer as mindblowing of deals or as exciting of sales.

Meanwhile, we're starting to see retailers like Amazon taking Steam's initial approach by offering fantastic deals instead.

Origin automatically scans your PC for EA games and registers the cd key onto your account, so you can download and play it on Origin as well as where you originally bought it. You can also just find the cd-key in the registry and reigster it on Origin as well. Basically any cd-key from an EA game that's sold on Origin can be registered on Origin, past or present. I registered my old copy of Simcity 4 and Battlefield 2 onto Origin.

I got a 4 pack during the Thanksgiving sale (worked out to $3.75 a copy) -- just one thing to note the PC on-line community is completely non-existent.

Yep. And keep in mind not everyone knows about places like GG or Amazon and such. Moreover, Steam rakes in the money from F2P microtransaction -- TF2 and Dota 2 are HUGE revenue generators for them. They don't even have to design the stuff. They let users do it and give them a percentage of the sales.

Can't get myself to pull the trigger on Skyrim dlc, it will likely be cheaper or at the same price when the new dragonborn dlc launches next year. Will probably pass even though it hurts a little XD .
That's the thing. It's insidious! A silent killer! Twenty years from now it'll manifest itself and spring out of your belly, consuming you whole!
I actually got pretty screwed over by EA thanks to Origin for about a year since its released before my issue was mysteriously fixed without notification despite the number of times I opened, re-opened tickets and called them.

I doubt it, Bethesda is pretty stingy with lowering their prices (except for the accidental GG bundle)
Get your ears checked. I'm not jealous; I'm laughing at the ridiculous e-peen waving of accumulated UNPLAYED games people are boasting about. In light of all the bickering that happened earlier today in this thread, the Steam Workshop mods for Skyrim can provide you with TONS of additional content with no extra cost. Sure, you won't get the Vampire or Werewolf skill trees, but there are additional dungeons, dragons, boss battles, weapons, armor, towns, shouts, and whatever else you'd like available for free from the community. It's enough to not really make Dawnguard unnecessary at $10. I'm waiting for it to go lower myself.

You could get Hearthfire DLC for free in September by using a $5 off code on a certain website.

I suppose not. I just haven't heard of any of this stuff, and was hoping someone had a gem, or at least one they thought was cool enough to recommend. To seem sort-of-relavent to the sort-of-on-topic discussion of the last few pages, I don't necessarily collect just for collecting.

Well *I* consider La Mulana to be a gem. I just don't feel like writing up a doctoral dissertation about it right now. It has a lot of fans. So much so that they nerdrage every time Greenlight games are announced and La Mulana isn't on the list. I'm sure someone somewhere wrote up some TL;DRy stuff about it.

Some little things have been trickling through here and there. For 1.24 a piece I picked up each of the Garshasp games. Seems like a little bit of Conan and God of War mixed together from the previews.

Pinball Construction Set (1983) I love pinball.
Pinball_Construction_Set_Coverart.png
pinball.JPG

Though I would like to point at the best and largest open world RPG of the 1980s you've never heard of. It was truly massive and fit on two double sided floppies. (Apparently it used Run-Length Coding to fit it all in.)
Deathlord (1987) boasts a world of 16 continents, 128 unique monsters, and twenty dungeons
The Emperor's kingdom is under attack from the Deathlord's forces. The party must venture into Hell, defeat the Deathlord, and return. According to the box, seven words, six items, and the adventurers' incompetence stands in the way.
The plot is nonlinear and once the party fulfills the Emperor's initial quest of defeating the wizard beneath the castle, the party has no set activity. They must find items to protect themselves from acid, fire, darkness and magic walls, along with a special weapon that can defeat the Deathlord.

That's what you needed to do, explore the whole world with no guidance or handholding, only oblique hints by really outta-the-way NPCs. You needed to find the 7 words and six items. It never really told you that. "Seek the seven." "Find Senju"

There was no auto-mapping in those days, and an some of the dungeons required careful mapping and puzzle-deduction.
I'll bet both of you have completed more than 5%, maybe 10%, of those games. You just buy them and buy them and buy them and they crank up your game count as if anyone should be impressed by the amounts of disposable income you have. Congrats, guys, you have a lot of money to spend. Those combined 3400 games and $10 will get both of you coffee from Starbucks, too.

I've got 117 games in my collection - Humble bundles REALLY pad out the numbers with all the DLC - and have beaten about a dozen of them, but several were on console like Braid and Mass Effect, but they got rebought as parts of bundles, etc., so my percentage is even lower. My backlog is sick and shows little sign of improving either. I'm sure I could add a zillion more unplayed titles to my list, too, but why?
Have to assume your first line is a typo and you mean haven't, but why does it really matter to you what I spend my entertainment money on (for the record, I've played at least at quarter of my games)? I'm not collecting to impress anyone or pointing out how many games I have to win any sort of medal, simply stating that all the whining in this thread about how horrible the sale is and that there's literally nothing worth buying is completely overblown. Hell, just today I've sank 4+ hours into Half-Minute Hero which I bought during its flash sale.
I fail to see your point. We never complained about having a large backlog or complained about never finishing our backlogs. Collecting games is a hobby of mine - a very inexpensive hobby when compared to other things out there. Other people have massive movie collections with no intention of ever re-watching anything. People collect for the sake of collecting, it's the means to the end that matters, not the end itself.
Pretty much this. Some people drop a few hundred on a night at the bar, or 500+ going to a sporting event. For that money, I can grab a few dozen games on Steam. If I'm ever in the mood for a certain game or type of game, I've got the option to play them. I don't think I'm as hardcore of a collector as anarchy; I only buy stuff I think I have at least a slight interest in playing and try to keep my impulse buys at $5 or less, so there are a lot of RTS and things like Sniper Elite that have had great deals in the past that I haven't bit on.

That's pretty cool. Reminds me of when I played Pirates Adventure (text based adventure game) and had stacks of scratch paper with hand drawn maps and notes. As much as I kind of miss those days of "gaming", I'm not all that sure I could go back to it. ;)

I might not be online then, so what does Gaben think we are, idiots? [insert name] was only $2.49 on [insert distributor]'s website just last week! This Steam sale is less spectacular than sales prior to this have been, and I am inconsolably outraged by it. That's it, I'm selling my account filled with games I've only played 5% or maybe even 10% of. I don't even care if the ladies won't love me anymore as a result.
