Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V6! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

With the V6 Thread, we're trying a slight formatting change. We used to list every possible Steam deal in the OP, but they change too frequently for anyone to keep up with (even in the Wiki format). So now, we'll leave regular minor sales out of the OP. This post will keep track of major sales (Winter sale, etc.), Steam deals available through other sellers (like Amazon), Preorder deals, and Group Buys.

I would still greatly appreciate help from you folks at home in keeping this smaller-scale OP up-to-date. This is a Wiki post so anyone can contribute. Wiki instructions:
Thanks for your help! If you notice a sale has ended, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see something does need to be added, then kindly add it to the list.

Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.

Steam Sales - Updated 1/22

CAG Threads Featuring Steam Games on Sale Elsewhere - Updated 1/9

Preorder Deals - Updated 1/10
Group Buy Deals - Updated 1/9/13

Free Stuff - List needs updating with F2P games!
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

Steam's explanation and list of Steam-activatable keys

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card. The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I think Greenlight needs to have a revamped voting system.

Would you buy this game at full price? No. Would you buy this game if it were in an indie bundle? Yes.
LOL, you do realize it's a developer run torrent event, don't you?
I just need one more torrent man! Just one more! Then I'm done! I'll be clean! I swear!

In all seriousness, I think it's pretty cool if a bit unsual, to do a promotion via TPB.

Hey, it worked for McPixel and personally I'd much rather play an old Zelda style game than some hipster game that tries too hard to be funny.

Has hipster become a catch-all term for "things young people might possibly like?"

Because I don't think I would describe McPixel as "hipster humor," whatever that could possibly mean.

To me part of it intentionally looking bad / retro bad (ie shit that was ugly in the 80s and is still ugly now) because you think it's cool and/or ironic, which fits the style of the game.

Like 'indie', hipster is not exactly clearly defined (even if some people think both of those terms are clearly defined according to their criteria).

As always, you're free to think what you want. Or make a smart ass comment.

lol... yes and no. I think it's become a catch all, but hipsters can be any age and are usually like in that weird late 20s to late 30s age range still working at the record store trying to decide what to do with your life...

I'm not making an argument that people don't use the word hipster correctly. I'm making an argument that the word hipster has, in current usage, lost any sort of useful meaning at all.

Somewhat self-promoting here. I received an invite to the closed beta of Operation Smash, which is a Metroidvania style platformer scheduled to come out in the near future on PC/Mac/Linux. What I've seen of the game looks very polished, and the soundtrack has been extremely enjoyable. Anyway, long story short I'll be streaming my first play of the game around 9:30 Eastern (1 hour from posting) on my Twitch channel here: http://www.twitch.tv/gen0cidal

Operation Smash is on Steam Greenlight along with a trailer for those who may be interested.

Edit: Make that 9:45

This is actually the plot to an upcoming film in which I've taken the script for Ocean's Eleven and replaced every mention of money with the words "greenlight list" and all of the character names with regulars from this thread.

A quick taste: Idiot is the gymnast.

I am pretty flexible.
Anodyne, which is a retro zelda style indie RPG, is running a promotion where you can get it for $1 on its site via the Humble Store.

http://www.anodynegame.com/

The developer has promised Steam keys to existing owners if it gets Greenlit (Greenlight page here).

*Edit: apparently buying it just straight up gives the Desura keys now, or so I'm told.

-----

Also if you contact him @ [email protected] with proof of purchase you can request a copy of it on Desura.

I bought it for $1 this morning, forwarded a copy of the confirmation for that and had a Desura copy of the game gifted to me within a few hours.

It's actually technically TPB promo so you can apparently just (officially) torrent it, but I'm assuming if you want the Desura (and potentially Steam) keys you'd have to at least pay something. Anyway, I chipped in a buck and had no problem getting it for Desura when I requested it.

http://www.anodynegame.com/tpb.html

The promo ends @ 5am CST on 2/18 so should last through the weekend.

That last link does mention a bundle with Desura keys and the soundtrack coming "soon" so if you really don't want to fuss with making a request for a Desura copy of the game you can probably just check back later for that.
HOLY HELLS BELLS> the trailer sold me. looks so cool. thanks for bringing this to my attention. How has this escaped my wide swath of the internet. I'm so good at trying to keep up.

Regarding the current Groupees Bemine Aniversary bundle, here is my thought process:

1. Wow 11 games + musics for $5? Great!
2. (3 seconds later) Wait a minute! You never listen to the musics included on those bundles, remember?
3. (Checked out iBomber's page) Oh, a tower defense game ...
4. (Checked out Eschalon Book II) Isometric RPG with, ummm, what's that new word? Hipster graphics?
5. (Livalink) Indie/One man band FPS, well ...
6. (Party of Sin) 7 guys to swap around, 4 more than Trine. More is better, right? Right? ...
7. (Major Mayhem) Not bad looking iOS/Android arcade-style game port? Could be fun.
8. (Dungeons: the Dark Lord) Mixed reviews. Not Dungeon Keeper, they said.
9. (Men of War: Squad Assault) Ah, now more like it. Reputed to be very hard game though.
10. (Two Worlds II) The main attraction in the bundle. Not Velvet Edition, though. Work with a controller, great!
11. (Edna & Harvey) Never can say no to a wacky adventure game. Charming graphic style.
12. (Planets Under Attack) Cool looking strategy game. May need to search for review/download demo ... Wait, controller support? Yesssssss.
13. (Mystery Game) Must be Skyram!
14. (Looking at backlog) *head hanging down with shame face*
15. But it is $5 only!!!!
16. Goto 14.

So, right now I am in this loop. Can someone please help me make a decision? Please?

It's the best bundle in a couple months. It's not just that we'll all lose respect for you, but we're obliged to report this to Cheapy. You might get your CAG card suspended and be forced to buy all your games at GameStop full MSRP.

There is no inherent shame in having large game collection (played or not). Do we shun people with large book collections? Who have a lot of movies? Who have a lot of music?

My problem is I have massive physical game collection, digital game collection, book collection, music collection, etc...

There will also be the regret when others are playing Two Worlds II and you are having to scour the Steam Trade thread to try to find a copy only to find the cheapest copy will cost you skyramz n all DLC.

And who's to blame for that? Hipsters.

Pat, it's roughly the same price as an expensive cup of coffee or a drive-thru meal and the bundle will flow through your bowels much more slowly. And enjoyably.

lol. gog added 1920*1200 to System Shock 2. absolute madness. so very impressive. gog needs to be supported in every way feasible. the company is just dynamite. i'll by 2 copies of system shock and 2 more of cyberpunk. KEEP! it up.

But does it activate on Desura?

My excitement about Bioshock Infinite makes me want to jump on one of the BSI/TR bundles on ebay for 60 dollars but I know if I get on there in a month they'll be going for 30-40. Cheap Ass vs Gamer again

For $60, you'll still be even if they're going for $30 each. You can actually get one for below $50 if you're fast, persistent and lucky... I figure getting them for 60%+ off is low enough that even if they drop in price, they're not likely to go under 66% any time soon.

I just need to play them right away so I feel like I got in ahead of the curve :D

Weird, today's steam updates are making Steam forget. It thinks I don't have Giana installed (played it last night, files are still there), and a 60+ other games. I said fine install Giana, and it said woah, trippy, there are files here, so it light up another and took it's damn time to cheak all my Giana files it forgot about. I hope I don't have to do this for the other 60_ games...

the term "activates on" is another way of saying DRM. i know i know. but it feels SO good. gotta hand it to gog for the TOTALLY drm free stuff. I love taking my files and installing them here, there, everywhere. laptop desktop. etc. its great. counterpoint, i suppose you can do this with steam if you have an internet connection.

Not really Steam related but I'm gonna ask you nice people anway...

Do Bioware points EVER go on sale? I'd really like to pick up some Mass Effect 3 DLC but From Ashes and Leviathan together would be $15 and that is more than I paid for the base game.

Google search led me to believe that Bioware points sometimes go on sale but they seem pretty rare. Any idea how I'd find out when it happens? Would it get exposure on CAG?

You're going to be waiting a while. Since the Bioware points deal on Origin back in late 2011 (IIRC) they haven't been on sale. It's extremely irritating.

However, if Hell freezes over and Bioware points DO go on sale, you'll definitely hear about it here.

Kind of related to your post but I reinstalled windows on a ssd and my games are still on my old hard drive. Steam recognizes 60% of the games when I add the location to my library but all of files for all of my games are there. If I use steam mover then it works but if I move it back to the secondary drive, steam doesn't realize that the files are there.

Though its not Steam-related, I have to agree that it's great to have an accessible version of System Shock 2 available. The game went for horribly high prices not too long ago, and it didn't even work properly on modern OS's. (Many Windows 95/98 games come to mind.) So, indeed, GOG deserves their kudos.

Between Brutal Legend reaching the PC and System Shock 2 finally getting proper support, it's a good time to be a computer game enthusiast.

If your res' isn't listed, you could just open cam.cfg file (in your System Shock 2 folder) and just literally change the resolution to what you wanted.

See here:
http://www.gog.com/forum/system_shock_2/resolution_patch/post10

Just open cam.cfg in your editor of choice and change the resolution under the game_screen_size variable as such:
game_screen_size 1920 1200
