TNA iMPACT! - Gen. Discussion & Info.

I think there were a lot of high expectations for this game. There was a ton of time they had to get this game done right. They had all the tools available to them in order to make this game really stand out and steal the spotlight from the SvR franchise.

Problem is, I think they took too much time in making the game LOOK good than worrying about other factors of the game. The gameplay itself is decent. It's far better than what I've seen with the Legends of Wrestling and Backyard Wrestling franchises. But there's hardly any depth to movesets to really differentiate one wrestler from another. Too many repeat moves, too little options in terms of moves to execute, omission of certain finishers, etc. It might not be a big deal to others, but supermarks look for these things.

In terms of calling it an "arcade" wresting game, then what the hell do you call SvR? I think people confuse "simulation" with "control". The level of control that you get with SvR is very nice, it's probably grazing the surface of what could be done with wrestling games. When I hear people say TNA is "arcade" it makes me think that some people think that there is a "simulation" wrestling game. I don't think we've seen a simulation wrestling game yet. Nor do I think you can make a sim based on entertainment that's scripted.

I don't know if there will be a second game in the franchise, but if there is I hope there is enough effort in the gameplay than there is with the graphics. I still think TNA is a decent game, but it certainly doesn't justify a full retail tag. I'll be one of the people who snag this game on the cheap. REAL cheap. Until then, I'll keep it rented out from GameFly.

Downloadable content coming next week.

Next week, TNA iMPACT! fans will be able to complete their rosters with the first ever downloadable characters in a wrestling game. Starting November 6th, the Maple Leaf Muscle Petey Williams and the Hot and Spicy Curry Man will be available to download for the Xbox 360 for 100 Microsoft Points. TNA iMPACT! owners can round out the 27-man roster while finishing the competition with the Canadian Destroyer. As an added bonus, TNA announcer Mike Tenay will also be available to download, free of charge.
Can anyone get on XBL and tell me if the DLC is 100 points for each character or both?
It is each, and I just got them. Trust me on this you don't want them... First of all Curry Man comes out as christopher daniels they didn't change him at all. Curry Man even does the same Finisher, and the exact same moves as christopher daniels which seems kind of pointless to me. The part that is more disturbing is Petey Williams isn't Petey Williams. For him AJ Styles come out... Why I don't know, but when you select Petey Williams you end up playing as sensi with the name Petey williams under him... I hope to god Midway really isn't that stupid, and this is just some really bad glitch. I took a picture of the fake Petey Williams If anyone wants proof. It really bothers me cause I wasted points on a character I already had.
Please do. Is "Canadian" Petey Williams in the game, or is this his first appearance?

IOW, is he a re-skin like Curry Man -> Chris Daniels?

How large is the DLC file size?

Thanks for answering the earlier question, by the way.

EDIT: You're not alone. Sounds like a systemic thing: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=933905&topic=46418189
One Character was 53 megs, and one was 55 megs. It was Petey Williams first apperance. Kind of lame of Midway for screwing up there dlc.

Well since Curry Man is Christopher Daniels, it's no surprise they went that route. Still kind of lame that they did not bother adding new moves. Hopefully the Smackdown DLC will have new finishers for the characters if they are not part of the usual move sets.
why dont i see this content for download. hopefully its just a bad glitch and they will fix it
Maybe they pulled the content to try to fix the problems.

yes!!! dlc is officially out again!!! fixed!!!

canadian destroyer!!!!!!

petey has his entrance theme and steiners entrance.

currey man has his theme and his own entrance.

things ive notice- curry man has a generic death valley driver has his finsher.

Neither wrestlers song plays when they win a match.
Good work blowing Curry Man's secret identity, Midway!
Actually if you read the Kotaku preview article from back at Against All Odds 06 in Atlanta, they spolied it there. That's how I found out.

Speaking of which, with Eric Young going back to not having a mask and Curry Man hasn't been shown recently, could Daniels also be Suicide?

I guess I was just lucky. I downloaded the ones that was messed up to start with. I saw this, and got on live, and downloaded them. There alright I guess.

You didn't know Daniels was Curry Man? That's who he wrestled as in Japan long before he was in TNA.

I like Curry Man, but prefer him to be Daniels.. as-long as he's not Starry-Eyed Pirate Daniels.

Also, to anyone that has this, think it's worth it to download them? I'm on the edge, since I don't have much money, and want to save most of my points for Banjo & Kazooie on the 26th.
i thought 100 points each was pretty good.
It'll be just fine when I buy a brand new copy of the game for $10. Probably around mid-December.

im wondering if they will have any more dlc...

Doubt it. Just a guess, though.

wheres the fun in that.. i have no regrets :)

He was supposed to be, but he got injured. They did continue the Suicide vignettes for a while, but have stopped them now. I wonder if they'll even bother with the gimmick now since by the time Kaz returns, the "hype" over the game will be forgotten. They should just use another guy under the mask till Kaz returns.

This game is going on sale for $9.99 from 12/28-1/4 at GameCrazy. Credit goes to Scorch for posting the deal in the wrestling thread in off-topic.

I wonder if people will have to take the GC ad to their local Wal-Mart like I did because Game Crazy refused to honor their own ad.

I got the game today. So far it's ok. It's not terrible (yet).

Has anyone gotten the Planet Jarrett achievement?

Impact is actually pretty decent. If Fire Pro is a 10, and SVR 2009 is an 8, Impact is a 6. Well worth the $10 at Game Crazy, or really $5 considering you get 1 free game, too.

I have played 6-8 exhibition singles matches, including a couple Ultimate X, as well as the first few matches of story mode. There are obvious flaws with the game. Some collision detection problems arise, but I can count those occurrences on one hand. Twice, while chasing me outside the ring, opponents tripped themselves over the steps. Honestly, that was kind of funny.

Some of the controls are unnecessarily complicated. There's no need for separate buttons for punches and kicks. To differentiate between weak and strong strikes, they could have set weak to tapping the strike button (preferably X) and strong to holding it. LB + Y doing three different things also causes some issues. It wouldn't be so bad if you didn't need it to use your finisher, but the fact that you have to grapple with LB + Y in order to use the finisher is awkward since you have to stand still. Pressing forward or back while entering the button combination causes you to do an Irish whip or other attack.

To summarize, there are some collision detection issues. Some controls are awkward. They're nowhere near WWF Attitude level bad, but also nowhere near as intuitive as SvR's. Everyone's been over the no DQ/countout thing. I don't mind since the game is a fun arcade style title, but I wish there was an option to turn those things on and off.

All that being said, the game is worth the $5/10 at GameCrazy. I'd say it's actually worth $20, maybe $30 if the online play, which I haven't tried, is decent.

Oh, and about the Planet Jarrett achievement: I wonder if anyone has that. I have a friend on my list, and acquaintance of mine who is former indy wrestler who came up with Samoa Joe in the late 90's and remains friends with him to this day. He has Joe on his friend list, yet still doesn't have the achievement. That seems to imply that either Joe doesn't play the game, or that one or both of them dislikes the game enough that they never played each other online. Then again, said friend only has achievements from 10/6/2008 and hasn't played the game since, so I guess it has more to do with my friend than Joe.

I just finished the ridiculous (yet somehow enjoyable) story today and I'm probably in the minority but I really like TNA iMPACT! It looks really good and it's really fun to play. Looks like there's no other downloadable wrestlers headed our way
Though it lacks the depth of SvR, I'm just hoping that TNA iMPACT! 2 doesn't get cancelled.

Things are looking grim for a sequel but I really want to see what a 2nd year effort could do for this game..

I enjoyed it.. still pop it in every now and then for a few exhibition matches..

I wonder what are the contract details between midway and tna..
I wonder what are the contract details between midway and tna..
"Don't go out of business and you can make a sequel."

I got this from Amazon for $20 last week and just got around to playing it tonight. After playing one exhibition match I tried to go online. After awhile of trying to be setup for a match I finally found someone to play. Needless to say they kicke dmy ass in no time since I had no idea what I was doing. But as soon as the ass kicking was done I got the Planet Jarrett achievement. In the end not so bad after all. I have no idea who I was playing but their wrestler looked like Consequences Creed.

What's with the Planet Jarrett achievement? Cravin_Taco_Bell has it and let me beat him 3 times last night. I never got the achievement.
Doesn't work like that. Works more like the Killzone "top X% for the week" trophies. Except it's for all time, I think.
No, that's the TNA Champion achievement. Planet Jarrett is for "playing against a TNA wrestler or someone who has" (viral achievement).

I had this game, sucked but somehow kept my attention for like a week. At the end, I was all, "how'd that happen? why did i do that?"

Jeff Jarrett is so damn cheap. He gets his finisher with like 5 punches. I fucking hate the reverse move with the analog stick. It takes fucking forever to get out of a move. Meanwhile my hand is in pain banging on the damn thing trying to get up. This is ridiculous. I just want to beat this game and be done with it already.

I remember defeating Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett in one attempt, the only things you need to do are arm drag and submission. Give him an arm drag, the only move he can't reverse, and stomp his head a couple of times before going into a headlock submission. Just rinse and repeat but if he gets a finisher, just run circles around the ring since the CPU always trips over the steel steps.
I can't believe I remembered all that...

Yeah that is basically the method I used as well. It was super funny watching the computer trip over the steps the first time. How dumb can the devs be to leave that sort of stupid AI in and then if you watch their comments during the end credits complimenting themselves on what an awesome game they made.

Angle was annoying but not that bad. The steel chairs helped. The Jarrett fight doesn't have any chairs. I've gotten him to red, then he punches me like 3 times, gets his finisher, and wins. I'm going to try again later tonight. Thanks for the tips.

A little nitpicking but does it bug anyone else that the left trigger does nothing? Like what game gets away with that, doing a taunt or block takes 2 buttons yet it never dawned on anyone to assign one of those to the left trigger.

What bothers me is the left analog stick. Worst thing ever to use to get out of a stunned state and especially a pin. Completely sucks.

I finished up the game last night. I kept spamming Double J with clotheslines and the occasional body slam. Took me 3 finishers to beat him.

The story was kind of interesting, although you fight way to many jobbers and have way too many tag teams. I also find it ridiculous you basically have no moves and takes a whopping 700,000 plus style points to unlock them all.

Yeah I always thought Suicide's voice work was done by Phil LaMarr since it sounds like the voice he does for the John Stewart Green Lantern on the Justice League.
