Tonight Show Shakeup Leno Back In

Back around December, there was a big hullabaloo about Jerry Seinfeld replacing Conan as host of the Tonight Show. Now hearing that Seinfeld is producing a show for NBC, could they just be moving their pieces into place to get Jerry Seinfeld into the late night game?

Hey I've never listened to Howard but is there an easy way to listen to THAT show? Seemed interesting. Also, do they go on for a while about this whole thing? And Rosie's show seemed pretty decent also.

If Leno was doing so well they shouldn't have fired him from the job in the first place, especially if the best idea they could come up with would be to give him another show that started an hour and a half earlier.
Leno wasn't fired. This was supposed to be a well timed and well thought out transition that began back in 2004. NBC felt that by the time this deal went into effect, 2009, Leno's popularity and ratings in late night would have weakened......but they didn't. At the time Leno stepped down from the Tonight Show he was still brining in very strong ratings, relatively speaking, and winning the ratings battle with Letterman pretty much every night.

But NBC already had a contract with Conan to take over so they were pretty hosed. They didn't want to risk Leno taking his still popular late night show and moving it to Fox/ABC so they cooked up the prime-time crap to try and keep him from competing against Conan on another network.

This all completely sucks...

But I'd be utterly lying if I said I did not friggen LOVE this Drama and massive hate for Jay. I've ALWAYS hated him and LOVED Conan... so this is great.

Yeah i was listening to it. That part just leaped out at me, like he bent her over and spanked her or grabbed her ass, or what exactly?

I've never heard that before.
Conan is going off the air and Guy Fieri gets a new show on television?

I don't believe I've ever hated Americans on the whole as much as I do now.
What the fuck are you talking about?! I love Smashmouth!

He must have been drunk when he did it because she fell out of a whole forest of ugly trees and hit every branch on the way down.

You, sir, are off the chain.

That over the hill Epi-Fat 'punk rock' fucker single handedly ruined Psycho Suzi's motor lounge and tiki bar for me.

By the way, there's a clip of Jimmy Kimmel doing a segment on Leno tonight where he just skewers the fuckin' asshole. Worth watching.

"Listen, Jay, Conan and I have children—all you have to take care of is cars. I mean, we have lives to lead here. You've got $800 million, for God's sakes—leave our shows alone."

Leno> Have you ever ordered anything off the TV?
Kimmel> .....You mean like how NBC ordered your show off the TV?

Ouch. I don't really care for Kimmel, but it's pretty clear he's lightning quick on his feet.

Sums up exactly how I feel about the situation. I do feel bad for Conan though because he's always wanted to do the Tonight Show and not just for 7 months.

Also, Kimmel going in on Leno. So awesome.

You guys really think Kimmel meant all that shit he said to Leno on Leno's show?

COME ON.

The guy did a whole show dressed as Leno and making fun of Leno, then Leno has him on for a guest segment?

It's obvious Kimmel and Leno are friends otherwise there's no way in hell Leno would've agreed to having Kimmel on.

He already got shit on for an entire show, so you guys think he asked for more? c'mon.

I'm not denying it was funny...I'm just amused by the people who are like "oh man Kimmel stuck it to Leno ON HIS OWN SHOW!"

I'm willing to bet that they're not friends, and the only reason Leno got Kimmel on his show is because he knows that people would tune in to watch it...it's all about ratings. You could tell that Leno wasn't too happy with Kimmel's responses. I'm willing to bet he planned it but he wasn't expecting the responses Kimmel threw out to be that harsh (well deserved too).

Kimmel was friendly until Leno turned down doing his show in return. After that, the kiddie gloves came off and Kimmel slaughtered him.

I love seeing Conan not pulling any punches this week. His segment with Rob Lowe tonight was particularly good since it's obvious that he's had it with NBC.

My guess is someone gave Leno the idea to have Kimmel on his show to save face, like in a "See he is on my show! We are totally buds and it is totally kewl he did a show mocking my whole shtick. No hates me, no one hates me" kind of way.
Kimmel was friendly until Leno turned down doing his show in return. After that, the kiddie gloves came off and Kimmel slaughtered him.
I noticed that as well... Kimmel was making friendly, albeit corny jokes until Leno completely dismissed him about doing a segment on his show in return, then the venom came out.

Yup, I have always disliked Leno as well and and it is amusing to see him get all this hate. It's just unfortunate that Conan had to get the shaft for it to come about.

Anyone else amused by the jokes made at Carson Daly's expense by Letterman? Good stuff.

If you guys needed any more proof of the weak ratings of Leno's 10PM show, the NBC news affiliate in Memphis has lost the ratings period (since Leno has been on at that time) for the first time in almost 10 years.
Leno got owned by Kimmel, it was definitely not what Leno expected.
he couldn't counter kimmel with anything and u could tell he was really surprised when kimmel continued to talk after the last question even though jay was trying to end the segment

I wonder what all was edited out of Conan last night. Did anyone else notice Conan's quick mood shift between Lowe and Jane Krakowski....like someone told him to tone it down. Also the music guest seemed pretty long. Then a break then there was 3-5 minutes of all guests and Andy and Conan talking then a reply of Andy's TV plea.

I am not surprised. Probably there is a big meeting happening as we speak between NBC and Conan saying "We need to see/read all your jokes and approve of them or else it doesn't air."

I don't expect any funny good by shows/end off shows (like the masturbating bear release one).

I wonder what NBC is going to do about the hundreds of JOBS that are going to be lost because of this? Sure the stage crew can be moved on to other projects, but what about Conan's writing staff that he's been working with since Late night? The people who worked so hard for these shows are probably worried about their future. They aren't going to be laid off because of the economy, they are going to be laid off because some ass hole which a chin couldn't bow out gracefully and wants his old job back. fuck YOU LENO!

Referring to the pointed jokes made this week by Mr. O’Brien and David Letterman of CBS, Mr. Ebersol said it was “chicken-hearted and gutless to blame a guy you couldn’t beat in the ratings.”

He added that “what this is really all about is an astounding failure by Conan.”

If Dick Ebersol is engaging in character assassination of Conan like he is here, you can take to the fuckin' bank the rumors of Zucker wanting to "ice" Conan for 6 months or more. Based on this scrambled interview with the NYT, they're attempting to salvage Leno's public image since they are banking on him.

I fully do not expect Conan to even make it to next Friday's show in terms of hosting. As gareman notes, there were clearly some edits last night - and that's not a trend that's going to change.

I just saw the clip. Man that was brutal. But Leno deserved it.
I never thought I'd say it, but much respect to Rosie O'Donnell (in reference to the clips Stern played of her).
What did she say?

When Conan gets kicked off of the air I might just have to stop watching NBC... thats if I ever watched that channel in the first place. I'll just start tuning into Kimmel or Letterman.

Same here. After the way this week has gone, I'm surprised he'll even be on Monday. Or I guess I should say I'll be surprised if he's even on Monday. I have no idea what kind of deal they have worked out or whatever, but if they are able to, NBC pulling the plug on him with no warning after tonight would not shock me at all.

The NBC brass has definitely moved on from the original "we don't mind if that's how he wants to express himself" mindset to the more expected mentality.

If you did not watch The Tonight Show last night, Conan read off a list of proposed names of the porno film he was invited to work on. I found a transcribed list, huzzah.

Crammin O'Brien
Coocoo for Coco's puffs
Two hosts, One Slot
Conan's Mono Log
Chin Deep
Conan the Impaler
The Splay Leno Show
Conan Gets the Late Shaft
Carson Daly's Last Ball
Laid Night with Jimmy's Phallus
Changing Time SLuts
In the Rear 3000
Conan The Bangbarian
Andy'll Try Him
NBC Lawyer Gang Bang: THe Backend Deals
The Fistahood of the Travelling Timeslots

Truth. Guy Fieri makes me want to chew nails.

God, those Ebersol comments just make you want to scream. It's the kind of backwards executive bullshit that makes no sense to anyone with half a brain.

The saddest thing about all of this is that, even in those comments, it becomes obvious that they were ALWAYS worried about the appeal of Conan on the Tonight Show. A situation that could've completely been stopped 5 years ago has now turned into a network clusterfuck of epic proportions.

If I were Conan, I'd actually walk today (if, you know, financially possible) after those comments. Being called an 'astounding failure' after almost no late night host has really been successful right away is just ludicrous. One of the underlying things here is this, though... they're fucking Conan because he wouldn't take their advice on his act. At the core, I really think that's what it comes down to.

in the rear 3000... awesome. id love to see him do a in the year 2000 this week before NBC pulls the plug, hopefully with andy like the good old days.

I don't think anybody really believes Zucker's comments are genuine. (let's be real: Zucker sent out Ebersol to do this precisely because he's an exec who's on the periphery of this whole scandal, as Ebersol is the head of sports).

This is a scramble to dent Conan's armor because he won't be working for NBC in a week. NBC, NBC execs, and Leno are all coming off as major heels in this - primarily because they are. But they're trying to frame the debate, and that starts with Ebersol trying to make it seem as if Conan was stubborn and difficult to work with.

This is image, this is Machiavellian. I don't believe for a moment that Ebersol believes what he says. But he's doing his job, he's being a loyal company man, and trying to shape public perception. It's their last real opportunity here, since they've shown their hand already, right?

And don't forget how hubris for execs comes into play here. Zucker's never been wrong in his own mind, which is why NBC is in the shitter and TNT got "Southland" for next to no money.

It's part of the play, really. Conan will be painted as a primadonna, someone who was a niche performer who refused to listen to the voices of reason, someone who insisted he do his own thing - and that's why he had to go. That's the frame NBC is building, and fools will buy it. Even if buying it means believing that NBC execs thought of themselves as superior comic minds and writers to Conan and his staff who had over a decade and a half together.

I'm sure some people will end up buying it. But I'm sure there will be a lot of people who won't. NBC never expected shit to hit the fan and weren't properly prepared to deal with Conan going rogue. And now just about every late night show on TV is have fun at NBC's expense so everyone knows whats going on. All they can really do at this point is try and minimize the damage and hope for the best.
Just wondering if Leno would have retired and just left, things would be better...
Obviously it would have for a few reasons.
 • Lead in ratings.
 • Leno fans don't need to give Conan a chance with his replacement because he is still on.
 • NBC is competing with themselves with an earlier time frame.

Triumph needs to bite Leno's cock off. I really wish NBC would listen to the fans/viewers because after this week the only reason I will be watching NBC is for the local news and Heroes. And that's it. How is Leno and NBC going to rebound from this mess?

Yeah I don't watch anything else from NBC but Heroes. And I watch that commercial free on the Netflix streaming (new episodes go up the Wed after they air).

That and the occasional sporting event.

Coco will be missed dearly. Only thing I watch on NBC is Chuck and SVU. i am really glad TNT picked up Southland as it has great potential.

It seems like NBC is pulling the plug early, since the Tonight Show webpage is having issues loading episodes.
