UFC 2009: Undisputed - General Discussion and Info - Releases 5/19
Is it reasonable to think that I could do a career on the lowest difficulty to get a better rating?
Nah play on whatever difficulty gives you the best challenge. Don't be a nancy boy and play on Beginner just so you can get a higher overall rating. Man up and play on a difficulty higher than retard.

Haha, that's lame dude. Honestly, going through once on beginner has less to do with the difficulty and more to do with learning the game. Now, that I've finished on beginner, I'm going to up the difficulty and go through the career again. Just because I played on beginner the first time doesn't mean I suck at the game. Find me online sometime, and we'll see who the "nancy boy" is.

I never said you suck at the game, don't know where you got that from. I guess I don't understand how playing on Beginner helps you learn the game any better than playing on Advanced or Expert. If you play on a level that gives you a challenge you will learn the ropes better than playing on a level where you blow right through everyone barely losing any fights at all. Anyone who plays on Beginner just so they can get their CAF rating as high as possible needs to grow a pair.

I will play you online as soon as they fix the fucking lag. It's so bad for me I don't really bother playing online at this point. If it's ever fixed I will be more than happy to throw down. The lag is bad enough for me I don't even like to do my CAG League fights, but I do them so I don't hold everything up and we can keep the tournament going.

Sorry, I guess I thought tossing insults like "nancy boy" and "retard difficulty" around implied that anyone playing on beginner must suck. Just wondering where the hostility came from.

But I think playing on beginner helps you learn the ground game immensely. Since it's easier to execute the transitions, you get a better sense of how they work and when you can do them. It's just my opinion, but it's basically how learning happens in real life. You don't learn new techniques by having someone go all out on you. You slow things down and go easy on each other until you know what you're doing. Same thing here.

I'm not saying ALWAYS play on beginner, but I was in no hurry with this game. I plan on playing it for a year, so might as well learn it properly. Obviously, playing on a higher difficulty is more challenging. But we're not talking about giving yourself a challenge. We're talking about learning. There is a difference. I'll challenge myself after I know what I'm doing (which I do, now).

As far as lag, I don't know what to blame it on at this point. I played at least 5-8 fights again Vulcan the other night and we didn't have lag in a single one. I've played about 40 fights overall online (both ranked and player), and only a handful have had lag. I have seen it though, so I know when it's bad, IT'S BAD. I just can't begin to understand what's causing it. I'd be inclined to blame each person's connection (those who are experiencing it), but there's no real way to tell.

When will anyone learn these companies dont give a shit and never fix online lag? Is it my imagination or are online games getting worse and worse with it? I could of swear 8-9 years ago some of the dreamcast games I played online we're silky smooth and tolerable.

360 games have just a few more effects running than any Dreamcast game. There are also a couple more people playing on Live than even owned a Dreamcast.

Haven't had too bad of a problem with lag online with UFC, though there was slowdown in some of the fights I've played. Mostly it's annoying because it kills grapple reversal timing. I have more of a problem with quitters.

Even more annoying is the fact that at 24-2 in ranked I'm having a hard time even finding a fight. People keep backing out. It's going to be a long road to the red/black belt achievements if people keep avoiding or quitting.

That's the problem I have. I played a guy the other night, I was Kenny Florian. He was BJ Penn. All he did was try to take me down and submit the entire fight. Luckily, I know reversals pretty well, and Florian has mad BJJ skills anyway. I was hitting him with some good shots standing up though.

Then, late in the 2nd round, he tried to shoot in, and I threw a knee that knocked him out cold. It was an awesome KO because he continued to fall forward and landed on his stomach, with his face on the mat. Of course, as soon as BJ hit the mat, I get the "connection error" message. Douchebag.

I hate that you can't have ranked matches against a friend. I know this would lead to boosting, but what's worse: boosting or people disconnecting all the time? I just want to get credit for my fights and not waste my time. I don't care if I'm not at the top of the leaderboards (and it's not like people haven't already cheated their way to the top of that). Plus, having a chance at getting those achievements would be nice.

Sad thing is the douchebag at the top of the leaderboards. Check his Tag sometime and read his bio at how he is the all mighty at UFC and to challenge him at anytime. But when he is online and you try to challenge him he will not play you at all. There are many times I wanted to play him cause I believe his one loss is cause he didn't disconnect fast enough. But that's my little rant lol. The worst is the people who are in the second stage of submitting and quit out. I ALWAYS send them a message to "take your loss like a man next time". Of course I always get a nice message back "Learn how to not play cheap" Of course, I bet 90% of these people don't have there Stamina bar on.
You can turn on the stamina bar for yourself online on ranked matches? If so that's lame.
In the options it says Stamina bar. It show's both Stamina bars when you play online, so when people GAS them self trying to take me down or try to gound and pound me or just do kicks and superman punches or just box me out, I wait till there Stamina bar is in the red and I attack.

Unless they've knocked you out by that point already ;)

The guy at #19 on the leaderboards with 3 losses I fought...and he is waaaaaay better than I am. We got to round 3 and I got KOed. At least I can believe his record.
Unless they've knocked you out by that point already ;)
Nah, I throw up the dukes cause I know that they are trying to go for a KO. Actually, look at my submissions nate lol. 70% of my wins are from Submissions and the other 30% is (T)KO's lol.

Oh, I know you go for the tapout, haha. I was more referring to the last time we fought. I enjoy the big knockout, but I like to think I'm not as much of a button masher as half the idiots online. I still haven't turned the stamina bar on though, so I guess I really don't know.

Ha, I think all our fights are good. Never one sided really. Goes back and forth between us. You should put it on for kicks and just WATCH how fast they love to drain there Stamina. At least the guys/kids I played against who just go for the ground and pound or button mash to hell. There are a few decent people out there who do the fist pound before a Fight and actually keep a eye on there Stamina. I have had a few that actually message me GF (Good Fight) Or I will message them first if I lost saying GF. The one guy I played said "I don't know why I Gas'd my self like that, it was foolish of me. But Good Fight. Unranked rematch?" So we went again and it was pretty much close to the third and he got me on a flash KO. So the community isn't that bad really. Some like the Stamina bar and others say it's cheap. Hell call me what ever but I use the Stamina bar Cause I like to know when I'm in the red and really Gas'd. But that's just me however.

There's no way to get above Level 3 on techniques, is there? I leveled up to 150/150 on Level 3 Kickboxing and it won't let me take any more kickboxing camps. I'm at 100/150 on Level 3 jiu-jitsu; need to get that up. I'm an 87 overall 2 months into my final year. 33-0.
I just ordered UFC 2009 yesterday. Can someone give me a rundown on what to expect?
Lots of fun.

Huge frustration unless you sit through the 30 minute tutorial (25 point achievement!)

Deep ground system.

Quitters online.

Fun against CAGs.

Once you max out at level 3 your done. I got really bored towards the end cause I finished the camps maybe within a year or two? (just throwing that out there, not sure). I kept getting between 30 and 50 points per camp session cause I got all the moves down pat.

Yeah most of those guys at the top are quitters, luckily i think on the 13th they're coming out with a patch that will give you a loss for leaving. I'm at about 80 wins right now, getting close to that 100 win achiev. What I don't understand is how I've won like 80 matches and lost 60 and I'm only at level 20, where as people with 40 wins and 60 losses are at level 30?

Points gained during the fights.

Medals gain additional points, streaks accumulate points, beating someone ranked higher gains a ton of points, losing to someone the same rank or lower loses points.

I'm level 37, 30-4 ranked, after a 20 win streak and I leveled up like 3 times when I beat someone that was 30 levels higher than I was who also had a win streak.

You won 80 and lost 60 so you're losing nearly as many points as you're gaining.

Also, losing to higher level people takes of like 1 experience point. I could lose to level 90's all day and it wouldn't affect my level much.

And- Get trophies! I got a silver trophy and every win I get a bunch more points from having a trophy. You get trophies by completing all of one series the medal tasks. The silver ones are pretty simple.

is it just me..or does the cpu really spam the stronger attacks when they start getting beat. i just noticed that i may really have the advantage, and then all of the sudden i have a fury of superman punches and face kicks coming at me. i block most of them but of course the only on that will connect ends up flash ko me. i was wondering if anyone else had this problem?

I haven't really noticed that, but if you think about it, it kinda makes sense. When you're hurt and you know you're not going to be able to take much more, you probably either try to stay away the rest of the round (which I have noticed), or you try to turn the tables and go for the big knockout. The latter is definitely a riskier strategy, but dumber things have happened in the octagon, lol :)

I'm assuming everyone playing through a career finds at least 1 fighter that no matter what they do can't beat? Mine was GSP, he completely dominated me the two times I fought him. I was just happy I was able to get to the 2nd Round one time before he pounded me out. If he was the champion the entire time in my career I never would've won the belt. Thank God Thiago Alves was the champion for a while, I was able to beat him twice for the belt.

Thank you for this! For the life of me I couldn't figure out what the trophies were or how to get them. Then just one day I got the bronze trophy and I wasn't sure how I got it. This is good info to know, thanks!

Finally got a victory after my long skid, defeating a Frank Mir as Nog via 5R decision. Lots of grapple guarding and waiting it out for chances to sprawl to standing. Mainly won through blocking and countering his numerous flying knee attempts.

What I've learned about Ranked:
 • Protect the head since people love to spam flash KO attempts.
 • The leg kick counter into body blow combo is my friend.
 • Grapple guard or die in the full mount.
 • Very few people will give the 'Spect Knucks in Ranked. Expect the Gong and Dash everytime.

i found i really liked the game for like a week, then it got way to hard and i ended up frustrated

im consider trading it in to EB Games and getting Resident Evil lol

These points are all pretty much spot on. I played around 10 ranked fights last night and NO ONE (besides when I played Gillums) did the fist bump at the beginning of the fight. At the start of fights now I just automatically guard my face and wait for them to charge at me and try to get a 5 second knockout. Everyone also seems to love spamming the LB strikes for a flash KO which is somewhat annoying.

Hmm... I didn't even know about the 'Spect Knucks. I know I saw the CPU do it in my career but I assume you just walk up to your opponent and it happens automatically? I didn't know that so maybe other people don't know either?

You press the d-pad toward your opponent to do it.

I like to call it the fist bump. I do it before a match all the time in ranked. If they come running towards me, I know they are gonna fight cheap. But if we both get to the certain of the Octagon and fist bump, It's gonna be a fair fight at least.

I'm way too leery to walk to the center of the octagon without defending in a ranked match. I usually start a ranked match by tapping air. I actually have had a few players stop their charge and reciprocate the air tap, which is pretty awesome.

Bitch, we played the other night and you punched me in the face when I went for the fist bump in the first fight.

That's cause I was just coming out with fists swinging. After I realized you were doing the fist bump, I did stop and do it as well. And IIRC, you won that match anyways you bitch! :D

Man, I am leaning on getting this today. Trading in crap ass CODWaW finally and Madden and picking this up.

Here is the thing, in games like this I avoid going online like the fucking plague reincarnated into a outbreak monkey.

How long do you guys think the single player/career mode would last in terms of time. Couple weeks? Couple months? But the 50 or so matches I played with my buddy as being itching for some more ground and pound.

Well, a career is 32 matches. How long those matches depends on if you knock out/ sub someone out early, or go into decisions. Sine you've played quite a few matches, you should have a good idea.

The training though generally takes up much more time, depending on what you do. If you do straight up strength, cardio, or speed training, it only takes a few seconds to go through a "week" (with on average 11 weeks between matches IIRC). If you do sparring, a sparring session for the week is 3-4 minutes, I cant remember. So, depending on how much you play, it varies, but I wouldn't say more than a month unless you play like an hour a week.

Then again, there are also exhibition matches, and a bunch of classic fights where you must re-create their outcomes.

Guys, I'm hoping you can help me with a few basic questions. I've played through just about all of my first career - Dana is forcing me out in 1 year. I made my guy a Boxer/BJJ for no real reason. Anyway, I've gone through the manual and played through the game, but I'm lost on a few things. I'd appreciate whatever simple answers I can get. Please help a CAG out. Also, when I go online later in the week, I'm CJACKN1. I can promise no real challenge, but I won't quit a ranked match! Here we go:

First, the transitions, I'm completely lost. How does the direction I spin correspond to what my guy does (which way he spins?) Relatedly, if I do a minor transition to go from guard, to a slight advantage, do I want to keep spinning the way I just spun it, or do I want to spin it the opposite way? So say I go minor transition by spinning the R stick down and then up and to the Left, do I want to keep doing all my transition spins the same way? I hope what I'm asking makes some sense and please take mercy on me, I only get to play when the wife and son are sleeping! lol.
First, the transitions, I'm completely lost. How does the direction I spin correspond to what my guy does (which way he spins?)
Remember if you are lost during a single player match, pause, check out the action list and it will tell you what actions with the right joystick will do.

No matter the direction there's pretty much just two things you can do, minor transition and major transition.

There is a practice mode under tutorial in the menu where you can set the AI to keep taking you down, or choose which position you start in and set up how the AI will react. Use this to practice different transitions, transition blocks and transition reversals.

In general, a minor transition will change the Up/Down position (person on top wailing away or grabbed closely by the person on the bottom), while major transitions will shift the positions of both fighters (and get the defensive fighter out from the bottom).

Thank you guys, I missed those options in the tutorial practice section. I'm going to use that now! Thanks again.

So I picked this up today and I am pretty happy with it. Only 2 things I really hate is the ground game for one because it seems like you are forced to just randomly spin the sticks around instead of developing some type of skill. (could be wrong...I could just suck)

The other thing is.....fuck can there be any more loading/saving/cut screens. This game looks pretty good but not good enough to warrant a load for simple menus. Career mode seems to require you to press A like 20 times before going into a match.

Other than that....I am liking this game a lot and it will sure hold me over for a while.

The career doesn't necessarily last 32 matches. Mine was 36. And Sood, there is a lot of skill involved in the ground game. You just have to learn how it all works.

Oh yeah, I know Matt, I have had the game for like 5 hours its obvious the ground game is much more advanced than I am.

Alright so I figured out all that other jazz. I can now roll around on the ground with the best of them. (by best I mean average) But at least I am not getting submitted every match.

The only thing I truly cant seem to do on a consistent level is step over a rocked opponent. I dont know if I get excited and press forward to many times or what...I always wind up just jiggling in 1 spot or taking to much time to move forward so they stand up.

But I started on Advanced (1 under expert) and am currently like 21 and 13 and just lost to a frenzy of single tie (sorry if I am using the wrong term) standing uppercuts. I blocked/got out of this like 5 times during that match and I did rock him but couldnt do the damn step over to finishing him. Baaaahhhh DAMN YOU EBAY!!!!

Just run over to them and you'll stand over them automatically. To run, click the left joystick while moving it in the direction you want to run to.

Whoever mentioned taking your time when spinning the R stick for transitions was absolutely right! Last night I remained calm when on the ground and after knocking my opponent down. It made a great deal of difference. Also after thoroughly reviewing the actions mention, I realized that the game does specify what actions will be performed by spinning the right stick certain ways in each position. I apologize for my earlier cluelessness and thanks again for the help guys.
