We won't get a proper sequel until after RPG Thread VIII-2!
You're kidding, right? I mean, the freaking shadow dragon is on the cover... it's the main gimmick of the game, lol.

Anywho, I don't think it has any significance, just a graphical effect.
Nope, I'll be popping it in very soon, for the first time, ;)
I pre-ordered Neptunia, but I wonder how the battle system is.

I've only played like 2 NIS games (Ar Tonelico 2 and Trinity Universe), and it seems like their battle systems have some complexity on the surface, but are all the same in that you can power through most fights by just using the strongest attack. Neptunia looks the same.

I guess what put me over the edge are the playing cards and it's similarities to Segagaga.
You played Trinity Universe? I envy you. How was it?
Played SaGa Frontier and couldn't get into it. One of the few RPGs I quit practically after the 1st hour of playing it.
It doesn't help that it takes like 3-4 hours of playing (with a guide even) to really grasp the nuances of how the game is played.

I enjoyed a couple of the storylines in SaGa Frontier. The superhero and robot ones were sort of neat.

The concept is rather cool, even if the execution is lacking, at the very least.

Who did you start as? If you picked Blue or Lute than that was part of your problem. They are the most open ended characters and hard to play if your unfamiliar with the game. Riki is a pretty bad choice too because of its difficulty. T260g and Emelia are probably the 2 best starting characters since they are more linear. Red and Assalus (sp?) are also kinda linear but harder.

I will agree that having a guide helps tremendously.

So, my gaming hobby has really picked up lately. I have been buying tons of games and I am intrigued by RPGs but have never really played one. I have a hard time finishing games so I don't know if RPG's are going to be my thing.

I guess I would like some advice on how to get my feet wet. What RPG would set the hooks deep and make me love this gameplay style.

I have a few - Mass Effect 1 & 2, Suikoden, FF1 on NES, Shadow Gate on NES (RPG?), Zelda Collection, Fallout NV, FF XIII on PS3, Personsa 3 FES, Arc the Lad collection.

What about some of the more niche titles like the NIS games?

Thanks.....:)

I will list my favourites per type
japanese style rpg (jrpg) - chrono trigger, final fantasy 6, final fantasy 7, dragon quest 8, dragon quest 4, dragon quest 5
action rpg - secret of evermore, dark cloud 2, rogue galaxy
stratagy rpg (srpg) - final fantasy tactics, front mission 3, disgaea
western style rpg (wrpg) - fallout 3

as for the games you listed
mass effect 1 and 2 - have not played but are supposed to be quite good but are combination rpg and shooter
suikoden - good game not as good as my favourites but I would suggest
ff1 - I have a large amount of nostalga for this game I would suggest playing the psp or gba version as it not as rough around the edges
shadowgate - not an rpg but it is fun but very old and has rough edges
zeldas - again not rpgs (although alot of people will consider them action rpgs) a link to the past is one of my favourite games of all time
fallout nv - not as good as fallout 3 (I have only put 25 hours into it (not done) compared to the 350 hours into fallout 3)
ffXIII - not yet played most consider it very linear (very split opinions on this one)
persona 3 fes - not yet played heard good things
arc the lad collection - not yet played is supposed to be short and mediocre while 2 is supposed to be an improvement also heard decent things about 3

nis games i have played are disgaea 1 & 2
I played through 1 multiple times (over 300 hours total)
I beat 2 but did no end game content just raced through

I can't remember (It's been 13+ years since I've played it). But this game sounds like it deserves a 2nd chance to me.

How are the PS2 games ? Worthwile? Is one of them a remake of Saga Frontier?

Just spent around half of my day playing Valkyria Chronicles. Went from chapter 10 to 15, each time saying that I had to play the next battle because I wanted to see what happens next.

Unlimited Saga is the "best", and by that I sarcastically mean worst, RPG on the PS2. Romancing Saga was an improvement, although I still didn't manage to get through it. I think I stop halfway.

I've read this whole thread and the previous one and I've been pretty impressed with the knowledge of RPGs. Had a question, I have not played RPGs in a while due to my gaming being limited to 15~60 mins burst over the past few years, but if i was to get into an RPG on the PS3 which one would you suggest between Oblivion GOTY and Fallout 3 (also have Nier but that seems 'lite'). I live in an area where those are my only options for the next few months. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.

15-60 min. bursts and Oblivion and Fallout 3 don't compute.

How can those be your only options? Don't you have a credit card and a mailing address? Or are you in Iraq or something?

I suggest Dragon Quest IV or Half Minute Hero. RPGs in short spurts. DQ IV is good because battles are quick.

I have time now to actually play longer sessions now, thus why I am asking. Also yes I am in Iraq or something so that is why I have limited options.

Fallout 3 actually feels like a RPG where I can make choices and play different roles. Now, granted if I chose to be completly evil and just shot everyone on sight and stole everything I'd be missing out on 90% of the dialogue and story....

I swear I think Valkyria is the japanese word for "shooting muhfukkaz in the face"

it sux coz I finally got to the part where the game is getting hard... like Im getting Bs now instead of As

I guess that means I actually gotta grind and get new classes... I want a Sniper!!

Oh you can do alot mroe evil then shooting people in the face. ;)

Sometimes you end up evil without meaning to. Then all of the sudden there is a bounty and five guys are chasing you with you knowing why. I would choose Fallout 3 over Oblivion personally.

That is funny. I started with Blue which I enjoyed a ton, but had a lot of trouble getting into T260g and the girl afterwards. (I did like REd though)

Star Ocean 2 for PSP reminds me of Lunar for PSP as in there's really little reason to rebuy it on there. There are minimal gameplay changes.

I used to love that game but it hasn't aged very well for me. Probably because I've played it so much. I actually like 1 a little better even though it's essentially the same game.

In FFIX, is there anyway to save my trances for actually useful situations? They keep activating during random battles when they'd be more helpful for a boss.

10 hours in and I like the equipment/ability customization a lot. The characters are a lot of fun but after this Burmecia/Cleyra arc in the story I feel things are getting a bit over the top, kind of how I felt with FFVIII. I do not feel Zidane is a very strong lead either.

Vivi is the shit though.

Yea, for whatever reason, I thought you were talking about FFXIII.

Romancing SaGa is a remake of Romancing SaGa for the SFC.

I'd give it a try, but I also think it's very niche. Just like how I'm a niche Legend of Mana lover.

Haven't played VC2 yet but in VC1 Scouts were way overpowered and could do almost everything, just because they moved farther.

I'm currently playing Suikoden V, and just got Suikoden Tactics from Goozex. Oh, and if you never try MS Saga before, get it. Awesome PS2 RPG.

I got Lunar PSP with great anticipation but only played a few hours. It's a classic RPG but beating it twice was enough for me.

I have fond memories of Star Ocean 2 but like Lunar I have no intention of beating it again. The credits theme is still one of my favorite tracks of any game.

I'm actually finding my Lunar PSP experience to be much more fulfilling then on PS1. I got Lunar Silver Star Story Complete on release day and finished it within a couple days with about 14 hours of play. On the PSP I'm at 16 hours fo play and just finished the Red Dragon Cave.

I'm looking forward to getting to Star Ocean 2 on PSP. I have it on PS1 but never get far. I get obsessed with skills and leveling far to early and never progress the story. Hopefully on the PSP I can break that habit.

Star Ocean 2 was the only one in the series I beat (so far). My biggest problem with it is there's very little character development outside the two main characters of Claude and Rena. I wanted more interaction like you see in a Tales game. Besides that the story is solid, but it's been 10 years since I played so...

I liked Star Ocean 2. 3 I just couldnt bother to finish, even after the 'twist'.

That MS Saga Gundam RPG for the :ps2: Isn't that supposed to be one of the worst rpgs?

It is a better then a lot of other RPGs I've played. It does follow typical "Gundam" fashion story wise though so I can see where that turend a lot of people off.

The twist never bothered me. What bothered me was how they limited the item creation so much that until the last quarter of the game it was nearly useless.

part of the fun in SO2, for me at least, was making absurdly overpowered items and equipment as soon as I got my hands on iron.
I like Gundam but I'm not a fan of Chibi Gundams. MS Saga looks like a baby's toy.
Chibi giant robots > Regular giant robots. One of the reasons I love SRW games.
Speaking of which, I'm through the half-way point in SRWJ. I can see why people call this one of the easiest SRWs, I rarely lose units in battle. I remember in both the OGs, I frequently had to repeat stages because I lost all my units.

i really have bad timing when it comes to buying game stuff lately. i bought a psp earlier this month and now word is that psp2 will be announced this week.

to make this rpg-relevant, i bought phantasy star portable 2... then they go and announce phantasy star portable 2 infinity. and look at the bonus room decoration!

Yeah, there's even a Col. Sanders skin so you can play as the chicken man himself. Dynasty Warriors is doing something similar were you get a Lawson outfit. Lawson is a big name convenience store in Japan. It's defiantly an odd advertising trend going on.

Ok, Poseiden in ToV is really pissing me off. You can't combo him, so Yuri is basically useless. Rita and Estelle were doing a good job with spells against him, until the computer decides it wants to be retarded and just stand there with both of them doing nothing and not casting spells. How do you directly control your party members, or tell them what to do? Or am I stuck like in the PS2 version of P3?

I'm on easy, but slightly underleveled. (only 43)

Robots shouldn't have pupils. Also, not a Gundam fan. I never scramble them in SRW unless forced. Also, I'd rather have a super robot than a real robot. Chibi Golion, perhaps?

I was super hyped when we finally got NA releases of the GBA SRW games, and I had fun with the first one until I got stuck on a map I just could not beat.

Also, gundam?

Yeah, the OGs were super hard, but the thing about it is, whenever you die you kept the money and exp earned from the failed stage. So, if you did it a few times, you would eventually win.

When I got to the end of OG2, I had to put the game down for a few months because I was so frustrated with the boss, but I managed to take it down after a few tries.

Yeah it was the one where you fight the R-Gun Rivale and can combine the SRX robots for the first time...it just completely decimated me and it was the end of a super-long tedious map so i never wanted to restart.

Maybe one day.
They haven't released any SRW games states side for any consoles have they?
No, they only released the 2 OG games for the GBA and that spin off for the DS. There was a remake of both OG games with extra content for the PS2, but it never made it over.
Every other game has a ton of licensed anime characters.

The portable Super Robot Taisens are all pretty easy (aside from A Portable, which is actually very hard). I got through W and K without any problem. Can't wait for Z2, hopefully I will be playing before the end of the year.

It always amazes me how easy Japan can do these things but America is a licensing mess.
