We won't get a proper sequel until after RPG Thread VIII-2!
The portable Super Robot Taisens are all pretty easy (aside from A Portable, which is actually very hard). I got through W and K without any problem. Can't wait for Z2, hopefully I will be playing before the end of the year.
I want to play Z2 so much, but importing games is too expensive. I'll wait a year and pick it up on eBay for like half the price.
It always amazes me how easy Japan can do these things but America is a licensing mess.
Well, SRW is made by Bandai-Namco. Bandai happens to make a lot of mecha series. Bandai-Namco also happens to own Sunrise which also makes a lot of mecha series. So, a lot of the series featured in SRW are already owned by Bandai-Namco. I mean, Sunrise makes Gundam which is a huge help. Sunrise also co-produced a lot of Toei Animation mecha series.
OMG someone else that has played MS Saga. How far did you get?
I almost beat this game several years ago, then my memory card decided to break down. Now, I just beat Apsalus. It's not a bad rpg, and also I'm a Gundam fan haha.
I was super hyped when we finally got NA releases of the GBA SRW games, and I had fun with the first one until I got stuck on a map I just could not beat.

Also, gundam?
Omg the black crippled kid is the guntank?

Omg hahahahhahahahah that is just so wrong
Ok, Poseiden in ToV is really pissing me off. You can't combo him, so Yuri is basically useless. Rita and Estelle were doing a good job with spells against him, until the computer decides it wants to be retarded and just stand there with both of them doing nothing and not casting spells. How do you directly control your party members, or tell them what to do? Or am I stuck like in the PS2 version of P3?

I'm on easy, but slightly underleveled. (only 43)
I think Select will let you switch people.

You should be able to beat him using Yuri though. Just use some of your Hyper Artes (I think have them by now). Just be warned if you are having issues with Poseiden some of the later bosses will give you fits. You may want to level boost a bit.

I thought I was like 1-2 bosses and then it's over? Unless I backtrack and do the optional stuff..

No. You got a good bit more if I remember right isn't Posiden only before you fight
Alexei?
There are 3 "story achievements" for beating sections of the game. How many do you have now?

Yeah I probably played through some of those SRW OG stages 10+ times. I never could beat the last boss on SRW OG 2. It just turned into a war of attrition with me narrowly losing.

I'd love to play more of the games but
1. I'm not paying the expensive import prices.
2. I can't read japanese, so what's the point.

If/when this Tales game does appear on American soil I'll probably get it day one, just to show that I'd like to continue to see the series released. I didn't get Vesperia when it came out so I do feel a little bad, but I did get Abyss when it came out and I think I got Symphonia close to when it came out

Yes, yes, yes. We need to give them a reason to bring Xilla over to. :applause:

I still haven't bothered with Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology since I'm not a huge fan of games that try to sell more on fan service than anything else. Plus, I need to get back to beating ToV but I've had so many other games that I've been getting distracted by and playing that it has been on hold for a while (probably to the point where I'm going to have to restart).

Really? I thought everything else was just backtracking and doing optional stuff.

I mean, for Christ's sake, it's the dungeon in the middle of the map, and in cutscenes they called it "The Final Battle."

I'm about 30 hours in and am ready for the game to end and move on to something else.

Yeah sorry man. You got all of Part 3 of the story to play. You have at least another 10-15 hours if you really rush it, probably more.

You are the Enduring Shrine of Zauda right?

Yep. ARRRRRRRRRRRRG!

Hey thread

Should I play Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2?

I played Chain of Memories (loved), 358/2 Days (hated), and Birth by Sleep (love) already.
That doesn't sound like enough pooh...
Well you could always have some hot pockets or taco bell before you play....

So I haven't played a JRPG to completion in ages, seriously think the last one was Final Fantasy 12. No 360 so I can't finish Lost Odyssey or Vesperia until I get another.

So my choices are Persona 4 now, then either SMT Nocturne or SMT Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 when I reacquire them for my birthday. Which of those two should I play first, Nocturne or double up on the DDS?

I've been looking through the release lists and it looks like Atlus is trying to distance themselves from JRPGs. Other than Radiant Historia, the other games they've got coming out look westernish.
What do you RPG folks think of Dark Cloud & Dark Cloud 2?
I use to own both but just couldn't get into them. Not sure what it was about them exactly. I enjoyed the world building but the combat/dungeons got dull to me.

I played Dark Cloud and a bit of Dark Cloud 2. Dark Cloud feels like a game that could use some nice polish to really make it the great game t could be. It is still enjoyable to play and the world building is a ton of fun. I don't remember much of Dark Cloud 2, but I remember it was fun when I played.
How much does Pooh Bear factor into the proceedings
He has a full story with Sora in each. KH2's is a lot sadder and more heartbreaking.

I hated the controls on Dark Cloud, which turned me off from playing Dark Cloud 2, which is supposed to be good.

Yes yes yes! KH1 isn't nearly as good as 2 imno, but is a must play nonetheless. Both have a minigame world in the hundred acre woods. Only thing is Pooh's story is very sad (for me at least) in 2. Maybe it's my love of the character and I don't like it when he's sad.... as said while I was typing:

As for Dark Cloud, never played 1, but loved 2. IDK how well it's aged though. Did you play Rogue Galaxy? A lot of DC2 ideas were in there in terms of dungeons and customization.

I have not played Rogue Galaxy as of yet, I am going to pick up a PS2 again as I haven't had one in ages and haven't really played many of the RPGs the PS2 had to offer.

I have not played Rogue Galaxy yet, but I have heard its good.

Also considering picking up a DS, how much does it offer to the RPG market?

Rogue Galaxy is decent, but it's far too repetitive for its own good. Certainly not a bad game, but I wouldn't consider it essential by any means.

Rented Rogue Galaxy when I had gamefly, but I either got stuck, or couldn't get into it, so I quit.

Not a whole lot for the DS. Nostalgia, Rune Factory, Devil Survivor. If you're a Dragon Quest Fan, it's your go to system.

Pretty good amount

Blue Dragon DS series
FInal Fantasy III and IV, Tactics A2
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
Dragon Quest IV-VI
Sands of Destruction
Suikoden

lots of good RPGS on the DS

After War For Cybertron, I think it's time to jump into another RPG...

:360: Blue Dragon
:360: Spectral Force 3
:ps3: White Knight Chronicles
:ps3: Star Ocean The Last Hope International

Any suggestions?
What do you RPG folks think of Dark Cloud & Dark Cloud 2?
I couldn't get into Dark Cloud 1 but I played Dark Cloud 2 first and the structure of the first game feels really rough in comparison to the second. Dark Cloud 2 is a really great game though and worth playing, and the plot has its moments, building the towns is a blast, especially some of the later and more complicated ones. My one complaint with Dark Cloud 2 though was that the villains managed to follow character types that I really don't enjoy that much,
i.e. the Gaspard killed Monica's dad and did a bunch of other evil things but when they find out he had a tough childhood they all of sudden have a change of heart about him, I don't buy it. Also the main enemy Griffon is actually just a regular person that had an evil entity controlling him the entire time (this gives me flashbacks to FFIX's final boss which I also hate).

For the DS I highly recommend, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story; I loved both of those games so much.

Just to add a few more:

Etrian Odyssey series
Infinite Space
Luminous Arc series
Atelier Annie
SMT Strange Journey & Devil Survivor
Knights in the Nightmare

And these are debatable as good:
Nostalgia
Revenant Wings
A few other FF games
Lufia remake

And upcoming,
Radiant Historia

Nobody has mentioned:

Chrono Trigger DS (a port, but still just as good, and one of my favorite games of all time)
The World Ends With You (awesome game with great music)

Also the Etrian games are indeed a blast, especially if you like older school dungeon crawling.

I remember two things about Dark Cloud--

1: Sometime in the game, this fat guy joins you. He was underleveled for me, so I took him to the dungeon. To restore health you eat food, and because he kept getting hurt easily, he kept eating a lot of bread.

So my roommate and I started thinking that fat people ate a lot of bread. We had another roommate we disliked intensely, and we noticed he got that college freshman 15 (or 30, I guess). We already nicknamed him John Muir because he would always talk about John Muir college at UCSD, so we called started calling him John "Bread" Muir, or JBM for short.

2: I remember you had multiple allies you had to level up. Well, I'm lazy--no wait, I'm efficient--so I put everything into one guy, one weapon. That weapon broke later in the game and after that I just quit because it was boring. =)

Kimarhi in FFX was the worst case of an under-leveled char I've ever experienced. I never used him.

And then he got like 40 new overdrives on Mt. Gagazet and he was still awful. That was one of the best parts of the game though.

I'm playing through the fan translation of Mother 3 (M3) right now.

I have to say it isn't doing as much for me as Earthbound did; that isn't to say it's bad - M3 is a LOT of fun! So far, though, it feels like it's missing lot of elements that the first one had, like "buying things" and "interesting/fun NPC characters" and "PSI" (after many hours, i JUST got the first character who has spells)... so far, at least; I only just started chapter 3.

I fully expect it to pick up and add a lot of those missing elements in the following chapters.
