We won't get a proper sequel until after RPG Thread VIII-2!

Sweet Jesus those speedrun vids are nuts.

Also, my standards have apparently lowered so much, due to the deluge of mediocre to crap RPG's in recent years, that Final Fantasy X-2 is kind of enjoyable to me right now... Dire times indeed.

DS wasn't a bad game, just not for me. I kept healing myself with items when I was trying to smack dudes. I kept getting killed from guys off camera. I put up with that stuff when I was a kid because I had way more time.

The combat in that game is actually fairly fun, if you're enjoying the story though you might want to get your head checked.

Agreed. Mechanically, X-2 is a solid title with an interesting job system. The mission-centered story progression was also interesting.

The game was just way too campy for it's own good, and it went against the tone and spirit of the original which seriously hurt it's reception; The game DID have it's moments, just the same.

i decided to import valkyria chronicles 3.

well.
i probably should play vc2 first. now i'm scrambling to buy that off amazon.
I generally love SRPGs and I couldn't finish Spectral Force. I'm not into required long sessions of grinding.
Yeah, I'm at that point now. I was going good for a bit and recruiting a bunch of people. Now I'm to the point where I need to attack someone else, but I get my butt handed to me when I do. So every now and then I pop it in and grind a few hunting missions, then turn it off. When the story is moving along, it is an enjoyable game. The grinding just isn't a whole lot of fun though.

I'm loving Magna Carta 2 though.

Yeah that's where the game ended for me. lol

So I'm trying Vandal Hearts FoJ and so far the only thing it's accomplished is putting me to sleep.

Just completed Keroro RPG. It only took me 14 hours to complete the game. I did everything aside from the card mini game and the bonus dungeon. That should take care of my Tales of fix until Graces F. Now I have to try to start and finish Ghost Trick before Pokemon Black comes out.
In honor of Xenogears on PSN... here's a funny parody I found:

I never fully understood what the hell happened in that game.
I been reading this for the past three days. Shame it had to stop right at one of the most awesome moments in the game.

It did however get me to buy the game even though I won't play it for several months...or years.
well.

dood! dont buy it! I'll lend u my copy!

icebeast, battlechicken, I agree about the mechanics. It's a fun job system. The story isn't even as atrocious as I thought ~ 4 years ago when I first tried to play it and quit halfway through. I'm either more forgiving now, have had my standards lowered in recent years, or am just that desperate for a more traditional RPG, lol (and this isn't even very traditional!)
Doesn't Xenogears have a bunch of installments? Or is the one on PSN the version that "must be played?"
That would be Xenosaga. IMHO a much more enjoyable game/series, even though gears had some great moments. IIRC, saga was made by ex members of the gears team, but I don't know the complete story.

I still need to beat Xenosaga 1. I'm about 3/4 done with it. I have the complete series. I'll beat them all one day, maybe when I the kid moves out and I retire.

I started up Folklore a few days ago, just something to tide me over till Dragon Age II. Anyone else play this game?
Doesn't Xenogears have a bunch of installments? Or is the one on PSN the version that "must be played?"
No even though it is Episode V or something Xenogears is alone.

Xenosaga on PS2 is unrelated to it except doing a similiar name and having robots you pilot. No story link.

Xenosaga was a disappointment. Was planned to be some grand six part epic series, but it was cut to three titles of sub-par rpg gaming.

Didn't try to do anything of its own style gameplay wise. Suffered in the story department and terrible characters (KOS-MOS and M.O.M.O.). Xenosaga was meant to be a spiritual successor to Xenogears. They shared nothing in common, expect "Xeno-."

Play Xenogears if you have the time. The rpg elements may seem tedious at first (button sequences for attacks) but the game does become very enjoyable. Fore warning: The second disc has almost no gameplay. It basically becomes an interactive novel for another 20 hours.

So playing through Fallout 3 with no sound (thanks crappy TV) is pretty fun, makes the game a bit harder on Very Hard.

Doing the quest for the Survival guide, going to Minefield netted me 7 deaths, haha.

Once I get the Platinum for it on the PS3/100% trophies, ?I'll have it 100% on both systems. :>

Xenosaga 1 was okay, 2 was a disappointment, but Xeno 3 was among one of the best PS2 RPGs of all time.

My thoughts exactly! I really wish they hadn't had to end it so soon, I'd love to see what they had planned for the entire series.

Holy crap, I completely forgot about that. Started it years ago, and made the mistake of playing each chapter with each character bouncing back and forth (ie, girl ch1, guy ch1, etc). Really got burnt out that way, but was way fun. IMHO pick one character, beat it, then go back with the other.

Isn't it written by the someone who writes the Persona series or something? I seem to remember a connection there.

i'll probably buy it though
just so i have all the VCs!

This is the general consensus I get for the series. Unfortunately it sounds like I'd have to suffer through 2 to get to 3. Xeno 1 isn't bad so far.

Yeah, I plan on playing through with the guy (Keats) first. Going back and forth didn't sound like a fun idea. As for a connection between Folkore or Persona I'm not aware of any, but if there is I'd be interested to know what they are. I will say Folklore feels like a SMT action/RPG, much like Devil Summoner.

Xeno 2 isn't really as craptastic as people make it seem. The biggest problems for me were the changes in voice actors and character style (not chibi/SD anymore). The story also felt hella rushed, but the battle system was kind of fun. Disappointing coming off of 1, but as a stand alone product not terrible.

Have Folklore and all the DLC but never touched it. I got about 12 hours into Xenosaga I but as I had only actually played about 20 minutes by that point and watched the rest I was just..bored.

So Fallout 3 has brought some interesting glitches for me.

1: In Rivet city, about 10 or so NPCs decidetogo to the stairwell out of the same door when I get there, and proceed to follow me throughout the city until I fast travel away.

2:
When I do the Head of State quest, I finished up everything, turned in the picture and cleared out the Slavers, and it seems the group got stuck under the map somewhere, so I guess I'll just come back and hope they're there.

So Xenogears takes place after the Xenosaga games?

Oh, okay. I was curious since that was something I'd never heard.

I should go back and play Xenogears again...probably from the beginning since I probably won't be able to remember what had happened in the story since it's been so long.

Xeno 2 is awesome. The battle system is far and away the best in the series, and may be my favorite in a non-strategy JRPG. The story does feel a little rushed compared to 1, but it's still far better than average. And the movie scene soundtrack is great.

The character style change did bother me, and the gameplay music is horrible.

whooo!! I beat Valkyria II last nite!!

the ending was soooooo anime o_O this is seriously the most anime game I have ever played ever...

but still hella fun! 44 hours and now I got heaps of post game missions n DLC

but enough of Valkyria!! it's time to move on to the next chapter of gaming!!

I could never find the picture for the Head of State Quest. I leared out the slavers, and told them the lincoln memorial was all clear but those morons still wont leave.

Finished Reily's Ranges last night and started the Take It back quest last night. It froze when I entered the water purifier building so I'll just have to try it again tonight.

Next I'm starting White Knight Chronicles or Dragon Age. I can't remember which I got first. (I try and play things in order of the arrival along a continum of genre)
So what is with all the pay DLC for Hyperdimension Neptunia. WHat does it get you and is it worth it?
Why don't you try reading the descriptions?
A couple of them let you use new characters in battle, that might be worth it. Some of them just boosts your characters' stats which probably aren't worth it.

Cause I enjoy giving you guys stuff to do.

It could also be I don't have PS3 at work that I can just boot up and check out.

Just reached what is known as Part 2 in Nier.

I spent the last two or three hours of the first part finishing up the fetch quest and fishing...yeah, fishing, and just as I get tired of doing the quests because of all the walking, an instant travel system shows up to renew my spirits.
LoL @ Nier. No interest in that game at all.

I mean, seriously? A game named after a women leg hair product?!
Your missing out on a truly amazing story, and overall good game. If we were going to judge games by their names NIS would have gone bankrupt years ago.

I posted this on the PSP board but will here, since need help. In regards to Ys I

Minor spoilers nothing big though.

I'm stuck. I can't get into the final tower.

I have all the Silver equipment, I have 3 books of Ys, I've talked to Feena at the dock, and I rescued Lutu from the monsters and got him back to his wife.

The old lady will read the 3 books for me but not direct me to the thieves. What am I missing?

Cheska is right, I only played some of the game so far (really should start it up again, but I'm playing through a bunch of other games at the moment), but it's a really interesting game.

Also, I think the product you're thinking of is Nair not Nier.

hey we can play co op!

just like we were supposed to co op peace walker!

Since I've got $175 in Reward Zone certs saved up over the years, I've been tossing around the idea of getting a psp. In trying to decide on that, I'm trying to make a list of games thats are relevant to my interests.

Its basically just (good) turn based/strategy rpgs and visual novel/point and click adventure games.

I dont know of any off the top of my head in the latter genre, but heres what I've got for rpgs (excluding anything from Idea Factory, ports of games from other systems and action rpgs).

Tactics Ogre
Class of Heroes
Jeanne D'Arc
Valkyria Chronicles 2
Zettai Hero Project

Surely I'm missing a whole bunch, right?

Dr. Mario Kart don't forget Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions. I know you said excluding ports, but that's just a fantastic update (better script and beautiful cutscenes).

Disgaea is also a port, but has an entire new mode (Etna mode), not that I've even put in the time to finish the regular mode...
