What's in the PS Store (5/31/16): Neon Chrome, Oxenfree, Primal, There Came an Echo, Plague Inc, & More!
I agree with everything MSI said about Suikoden. Just want to add (and I know I'm in the minority here) that Suikoden IV is great as well. Since they lowered the number of party members to 4, the graphics improved a lot and the sea battles are hella fun. Also, Suikoden III is my least favorite due to the weird tag-team groupings of the battle system, the numerous backtracking and lack of fast travel until very late in the game, and the early PS2-era stilted animation graphics. And Suikoden VI needs to come out NOW!

I apologize for turning this thread into a Suikoden discussion thread but Suikoden 1 is not only the first JRPG I ever played but also the first PS1 game I played so it holds a special place in my heart. *nostalgia*
I think you are the first person I have EVER meet that said IV is good. Most people cant even stomach calling it average and think its a travesty that should have never been made.
I don't care about Square Enix PS1 games but if they release them and they're popular enough, hopefully Atlus will heed the call and release some of their games (which I very much care about!). Who'd cause a longer delay? Grace Chen or Victor Ireland?

Like I said, I know I'm in the minority but I honestly could not figure out what bothered people so much about IV. I remember people complained about the endless sailing but I liked that, too. I found it very serene. :D Anyway, it must have sold enough for them to make a sequel, right? I just don't understand why VI hasn't been released...

Victor Ireland for sure. He'd probably insist on mailing out physical extras to everyone who purchased the digital copies of any of his games.

I'd be up for another 100 page hard manual though... But Grace Chen delayed Trine for months on end for no reason and told us to DEAL WITH IT.

I think that it was not just the endless sailing but also the bland characters and the horrid battle system. Also I would not say that V happened because of sales but instead because of the director. The person that made Suikoden 1 and 2 left early on in the series and agreed to come back for Suikoden V(which really really showed). I think V had more to do with his willingness to do another game and less with sales of any kind.

As for Suikoden VI, I doubt we will see it any time soon. I think the market on JRPGs was soft to begin with and the flood of Western style games and crap JRPGs really killed that market outside Japan. Id love to see a Suikoden VI(especially if it is done in the vein of V)but I just do not see it happening anytime soon. I think that they should try doing a more serious/dark Suikoden with an action hint to it for the handhold. Handholds have been more successful as have action games(which blend well to Suikodens team based gameplay)and Suikoden games have always had a dark tint to them with war and death. I think a dark Suikoden game that really does not pull its punches could resonate well with Western markets.

I was thinking about why they haven't jumped on the PS Classics bandwagon, and I figured out why...they are working on remakes of Persona 2 on PSP, so with that we'll never see Eternal Punishment or Innocent Sin for a long while (same for Revelations, since they did the PSP port)

I'm sure they could release the remakes of 1, 2 and ...If, if they wanted too, but those require translation if we are to get them (even though some of them are on the JPN store for ludicrous prices compared to file size, but I digress as we've already discussed that ages ago)

So you're best bet if you can't wait for the remakes to release is to find the US release of Eternal Punishment, Import Innocent Sin, make an ISO and play the translation patch, that's the only alternative as I see it. But I agree, sucks that we'll never get it.
What about Suikoden 1? I bought it but only got like....20mins into it and never went back. does it get good?
Well if you do manage to complete it 100% and if they ever do release II you can take your completed save file and recruit
the main character from the first game into the second one
, I always thought that was pretty cool.
I do not think it gets as good as Suikoden 2 or V by any stretch of the imagination, however I think its still a solid game that held up pretty well. Also given the fact that the game is only 10-15 hours long you can bust through pretty quick.

The real fun of the Suikoden games is collecting all of the 100+ charcters and watching your castle grow, this does not start untill around 2-3 hours in(game is still solid up to that point though). Suikoden 2 and 5 have amazing stories to boot though.
Sad part with that series though is how much the quality waned with 3 & 4. I hated the 6 member party split into two units, I wanted individual control which they took away from me, soured me on it right away. And 4...one of the most dreadfully boring RPG's I've ever played just from playing the demo I knew I would never buy it, and that pretty much sealed any interest in the series I had from then on.

I've briefly played 5 and Tactics, but never gave them a fair shake as it were because of 4.

**Raises Hand in agreement**

Sorry, mxpowar, but it's just so slow and tedious to be any fun, at least that's what I got out of it when I was playing it.
Who'd cause a longer delay? Grace Chen or Victor Ireland?
I'm more surprised Sony LET him release the Arc series on PSN more than anything else.

Well considering most of his games were kinda niche, and the Treasure games, he'll never have the opportunity to release them over his mismanagement and subsequent fallout over altering of Silhouette Mirage which caused a HUGE rift between him and Treasure, so yeah, we'll never see any of those every again.

And Gamearts might not be keen on letting him release Lunar in any way, shape, or form since they just keep rehashing their old titles with remakes. (See Silver Star remake on PSP, how many times have they remade that one game now, four if I count right...)
Dear squeenix what about Chrono cross love, me.
Speaking of overrated and games I played and never picked up again...(I'm sensing a theme today between this and Suikoden 4) but I'll save the rant on that and Xenogears for another day, my fingers are getting tired. Heh.

I would have to disagree with you about Suikoden IV "bland characters and horrid battle system." Snowe was definitely not bland since you could actually see him maturing throughout the game into a great character. In addition, the battle system, while obviously downgraded from previous Suikodens, was maybe a bit too easy and simple but definitely not horrid.

Lastly, according to Wikipedia, Suikoden IV's sales were less than, but not too far away from Suikoden III's sales. Suikoden V, on the other hand, had the worst sales of all the PS2 Suikodens, even in Japan. The DS Suikoden also seems to have low sales numbers but maybe sales requirements for handhelds are different than consoles. In any case, it seems the reason there aren't any more console Suikodens is due to the poor sales of V.

I don't really mind if the series goes to handhelds, but I would mind if it became an action series like they did with Shining Force and Arc the Lad. Those did not turn out well, IMO, and I think the same fate would happen to Suikoden, too. My idea would be to release a new installment for PSN/XBLA with similar graphics to V. They've already done it with Vandal Hearts 3 so it has a greater chance of happening. I agree that they should make the Suikoden games darker as well since I found the childish graphics of Vandal Hearts 3 very annoying.

Um, you know Atlus published other games besides Persona for the PS1, right? I know about the PSP remakes of Persona 1+2 but I was thinking more about games like Kartia, Trap Gunner, Brigandine, Tail Concerto, Rhapsody, and Hoshigami.

I would literally kill someone to get Brigandine on PSN. The rest of those games were kind of meh to begin with and def did not hold up well, but Brigandine is one of the best and most underrated games EVER.

You know Atlus localizes a lot of games that they didn't make, so they don't own the rights to every game they've published on the PS1, right? Just looking on Wikipedia, Tail Concerto (Bandai), Brigandine (Hearty Robin), Rhapsody (NIS), and Hoshigami (ASNetworks?) are all belonged to other companies, which means a PSN release of their US versions may not be easy unless those companies push for it since Atlus probably no longer has the rights to them. It would probably be more likely that Monkey Paw gets a hold of the Japanese rights to release them as imports if they're not too text heavy.

Even then, I'd think that Atlus would rather remake/relocalize any games they still have the rights for to offer the best possible version for people to buy today.

I know you don't know me very well, but I'm going to answer that with a hearty and playful....duuuhhh? ;)

Out of everything you listed, my research points to only a small handful of those being actually developed by Atlus Co. Ltd. (notably Kartia and Hell Night) otherwise they only published them as Frisky so kindly pointed out. ;)

So the chances of a PSN re-release are slim for most of the games on your want list. (not saying they won't happen, but it's unlikely, unless they still have licensing agreements they can work out with whomever controls the IP nowadays, well it might be tricky and more importantly costly, which is something Atlus probably wouldn't bother with, especially with a niche RPG title they know won't recoup its costs on PSN, sad but true)

This is probably the reason Konami hasn't released Suikoden 2....which is stupid when you think about it, but sad thing is everyone want to play 2 not 1, heh, but that's Konami's logic for ya "Well Suikoden 1 sold poorly, so we see no reason to release Suikoden 2 if there is such a poor reception to the title"

Also some of those companies are dead as far as I know, while the PS1 was a watershed console for JRPGs back in the day, we all know many of these titles will never appear again because of the way the market place has changed so much in the last 15 years.
Which goes back to my point about P2 remakes, which is the No. 1 reason we won't see any of the Persona PS1 titles on PSN ever, (well maybe an extremely slim chance, but very unlikely to say for sure)

And mxpowar, please don't feel the need to go on the defensive, I don't mean to make my posts sound like I'm attacking you, and if you feel that way, please don't. I agree with your assessment of the sales of Suikoden, thing you gotta realize though is people bought 3, thought it sucked, 4 really wasn't that good (your personal opinion aside), and so Konami did a last ditch effort with 5 and Tactics, nobody cared at that point and so the series died a well dignified (Ie. Quality) but premature death.

And since Konami is stubbornly bull headed when it comes to making sequels to games that don't have "metal gear" in the title or that are proven sellers, we can pretty much be assured that Suikoden will never appear on a console ever again. That's just the way the market is in this day and age.

No worries, man. We're just having a friendly JRPG discussion here, right? Unfortunately, you're probably right about Atlus not re-releasing any PSOne classics over here. It's just a shame, that's all.

As for Suikoden, even though I didn't care for it, didn't Suikoden III receive generally positive reviews (I seem to recall Gamespot giving it a 9)? And I agree that a RETAIL release of Suikoden VI probably wouldn't do very well nowadays. That's why I think they could do well with a digital release of Suikoden VI, like they did with Vandal Hearts 3. I'm sure their costs would be greatly reduced and there would definitely be enough fans of the series to buy the game for them to make a profit.

Not sure what the critics thought of Suikoden 3, but you know critical acclaim and sales don't go hand in hand. Otherwise something like Okami would get much more respect and have sold much more awesomely more than it really did.

And from what I did hear about Vandal Hearts 3 is that it didn't live up to its predecessors legacy (from what I've read, I can't say personally as I've never played any of them only've seen videos of the games in the series) I'd have to look into it more to get a clear picture of the game and whatnot, but regardless...

I agree on that point, more games should get a digital only release if that's the ONLY way it would come out if a company will take a chance to develop and release it instead of risking major money with manufacturing and shipping a physical product, and the costs and risks associated with overstock and selling at a loss, something that is never done (or is associated) with a digital release.

It would greatly depend upon some of these companies seeing how much profit potential there is though breaking even (or even getting a small profit) on a project isn't the most enticing idea to any company (outside of Vanillaware, who just want to make games they want to make regardless of profit) So making the case to release something with little to no profit is a hard sell as well, and that's another obstacle that stops games from being done, regardless of fan interest or even a creator wanting to make it happen.

Even though I (and others) prefer disc copies, I've softened my stance (slightly) over the years about digital only content. My main concern is 20 years from now is how I'm going to access it, I hope someone has enough foresight to address it, but that's a discussion for another time.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/01/02/the-drop-week-of-jan-3rd-2011-new-releases/

Here's The Drop for this week:
PlayStation Network

Tetris — Millions of players worldwide on Sony PlayStation 3 systems will now have the opportunity to download and play the game with crisp 1080p high-definition (HD) graphics, high-quality 5.1 surround sound audio, and all-new ways to play including online against other Tetris players from around the globe. The Tetris game is one of the best-selling games of all time, with more than 100 million paid mobile downloads.

(PS Blog Coverage: Tetris for PSN in 1080p and 5.1, Gets PS3-Exclusive Multiplayer)

Microbot — MicroHexon Research has invented a transformative medical technology: autonomous nanotech machines that are no larger than a blood cell. When injected into the body they target and eliminate diseases at the cellular level. However, something has gone dangerously awry. The nanomachines have bonded to the diseased cells and are now multiplying inside the body at an exponential rate. Piloting a new prototype MicroBot, players must seek and destroy the infection before it consumes the human host from the inside.

Richochet — Ricochet is a “Ball-and-paddle” game in the longstanding tradition of Breakout or, for a more accurate comparison, Arkanoid. You’re a participant in the intergalactic Ricochet Championship. You must bust through 40 different arrangements of bricks in four different arenas, builiding up the highest score to obtain the coveted Master of the Universe award.

PlayStation Network Demos

 • Microbot
 • Top Gun
 • Alien Breed 2: Assault
 • Ricochet
 • Kung-Fu Live
 • Hustle Kings
PSone Classics

Re-Loaded — It begins on a prison planet where the most sadistic, maniacal killers of all types are being held. Of course, they don’t plan to stay for long, and your role is to execute their escape from the bizarre confines. Choose from six lunatics as you attempt to blast, slash, and bite your way to sweet freedom. Characters range from armed robots to bloodthirsty cannibal girls, and each is vicious enough to destroy anything in its path.

Arc the Lad III — The tactical RPG Arc the Lad III is the third and final leg for the Arc series. The game lets you take on quests from guilds for the game to move on. As the story develops, the characters Alec and Lutz meet new company to face a corrupted organization called the Academy.

PlayStation Portable (PSN)

Legends of War: Patton’s Campaign — A strategy game where the Campaign mode combines 2 different game modes: a high-level strategic management part, to set up your army with the units of your choice which can be evolved to acquire new features and skills; and a tactical and turn-based part, where you will fight across different battlefields seeking the defeat of Nazi army with the least casualties and number of turns possible.

Auditorium — Challenge yourself to transform light into sound while surrounded by stunning visual effects and supreme symphonies. Find yourself manipulating a constant stream of moving particles of light and sound into audio containers — as you fill the containers, light transforms into sound. Given enough light, the containers will begin to sing together in a symphony — not enough light, and you’ll find yourself battling to conquer each puzzle.

PlayStation minis

Angry Birds — The survival of the Angry Birds is at stake. Dish out revenge on the green pigs who stole the Birds’ eggs. Use the unique destructive powers of the Angry Birds to lay waste to the pigs’ fortified castles. Angry Birds features hours of gameplay, challenging physics-based castle demolition, and lots of replay value. Each of the 63 levels requires logic, skill, and brute force to crush the enemy.

M.O.Z.O.X Space Salvager — M.O.Z.O.X. is a shoot’em up with a more ‘Classic’ flat and horizontal camera, and another camera orientation we call ‘Action’. The ‘Action’ camera gives a 3/4 view and rotates the camera like a vertical shooter but presents the player with depth. In our focus-testing we found this mode, while more challenging, was much more exciting to our testers.

Family Games: Pen & Paper Edition — In Family Games: Pen & Paper Edition, families can enjoy games like Squares (Dots), Nine Men’s Morris (Mill), Safe Cracker, Matchsticks and more.
Re-Loaded was not particularly well-received compared to its predecessor. Was Loaded ever released on PSN?
Nope.

I remember Loaded. One of the first PSX games I had back in the day. It'll be interesting to see how well reloaded has held up.

I haven't heard anything, but considering its a PS Mini, I doubt it'll be $10+. I'm thinking $5-$6, but I really have no idea.

I'm betting it'll be the same price as the iPad version. $4.99. It might go as high as $6.99 though (ala fieldrunners).

Ah, I did not realize it was a mini....on one hand it is nice I can put it on my PSP...on the other disappointing its not a full release.
I can't see getting Angry Birds without the touch controls...it is Move-compatible or something?
I've played it on an Android device, and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work with a joystick.
I can't see getting Angry Birds without the touch controls...it is Move-compatible or something?
There's nothing about it that requires touch controls. Use the nub to pull the bird back and press the X button to use whatever ability the bird has.

Yeah, now that I think about it, it should be more "accurate" or "responsive" with an analog joystick.

Any word when the update will hit and how much Tetris/Angry Birds will be? These updates being 2-3 hours later than normal is starting to piss me off.
Any word when the update will hit and how much Tetris/Angry Birds will be? These updates being 2-3 hours later than normal is starting to piss me off.
gumn posted the full list.

The normal time for these updates is 6-9pm, PST. This one happened today almost promptly at 6pm. Sony is on pacific time.

Never mind it just updated. Angry Birds is $4, Tetris is $10. Wheel of Fortune is on sale for $5 along with a bunch of other stuff. There is also a bundle of all the SNK games released on the last update.

Going to wait on Tetris until I hear more on it from other users.

A month in as a Playstation Plus member and finally a free game I recognize (but never played and wanted to ) arrives. Downloading Spyro right now.

Any recommendations on Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West?

do people still play that cowboy game? i really hope its better than red deads mp man that was a dissappointment. holy shit 70 bucks for 10 old neo geo games seems pretty steep.

Not $70, but $80. Yeah... that's pretty freaking crazy. Really curious as to how many people will buy that.

$64 for the bundle for Plus members. I already bought Samurai Shodown.

It's not tempting b/c I can't imagine too many people who want all ten games.

i hope nobody thats a ridiculous price to ask for only 10 games especially if the few that could benefit from it dont have online play. hell i know they have collections better than that for way less on disk.

does it have online play? i thought at some point they said they were releasing neo geo stuff with online play.

SNK is ridiculous.

Aren't all these games available in some sort of "neo geo" collection on every system ever released for < $60?

I guess they think the remastering really makes a difference.

that bundle didn't include the PSP stuff to, did it?

The bundle price is crazy, but these have native online play via psn--something any other compilation lacks. That said, I am not interested in these games at these prices.

The online play is not that great. Unless you live close to a friend and have decent internet, it's going to lag. Plus the games are AES ports, meaning limited credits (single player). However, the emulation is top notch.

Am loving Tetris though. Only possible complaints would be no custom controls, though I personally don't have a problem with the classic setup. Well worth $9.99 if you're a Tetris fan.
