The story to the first game sets up the series, and I respect it for that, but it was a drag. What I've recommended in the past is if you can get your hands on AC1 to play the first 45 minutes or so (no trophies, so it won't clutter your list), then YouTube the rest of the story cutscenes before starting AC2. AC2 starts the minute that AC1 ends, so it's kind of important to have some idea what's going on, but I don't think you need to play the whole game.
