It was published by Nintendo.

That makes it unique among Square-developed games, as far as SNES RPGs are concerned.
Which makes it more possible than the others, but won't they still need Square's permission to do anything with it? Or was it the same situation as Donkey Kong Country?

I don't know how it works after-the-fact.

Supposedly this is along the lines of issues with other games being released on the VC. Goldeneye 64 won't be released on the VC most likely due to Rare (I imagine) having a say in it, which vicariously means Microsoft has a say in it (as well as the rumors that Nintendo is the one cockblocking an updated remake on XBL). Same with Bionic Commando - Nintendo doesn't want it on the VC because it will somewhat promote the remake that IS coming out on the VC.

I don't know about rights and licenses and all that legalese hooey. So I don't know if Square has an opinion on the matter or not. They've only released a few of their SNES games in Japan only (there was a week where the VC over there got games like ....I think Treasure Hunters? and some others), and they've stated they don't like digital distribution as a model. However, as botticus (I think) pointed out, 130K sales @ $15 bucks from the My Life as a King Wiiware game might change their mind.

I would like to think Mario RPG - which some remember as being announced even before the Wii's release - would show up. But Nintendo is doing a great job kicking me in the nuts over it.
Why am I the first and so-far only person to point out that SMRPG was also made by Square?
I knew it was Square, but like Strell said it was published by Nintendo, so I like to think that's it's the exception.

And, also, if you were the first then you'd obviously also be the "so far only"

Hey guys.

http://www.vc-reviews.com/news/2008/05/esrb_update_earthbound_finally_coming_to_virtual_console

If you're familiar at all with the Mother series (Only the second game was released outside Japan, as EarthBound) you should know it's got an enormous cult following. In fact, EarthBound was the number one wanted VC game in the Nintendo Power poll just a few days ago! Fans have pleaded for Nintendo to release the other games in the series, Mother and Mother 3 in the West, or at least give the series some more attention, but to this day, their wishes still haven't been satisfied. That is all changing now - EarthBound has been rated by the ESRB, indicating that it will be released on the VC in the future.
All the praise EarthBound gets is really not just because Nintendo seems to be ignoring it outside Japan. It's a really solid and unique RPG - Instead of in the past or future it actually takes place during the present day, and you fight with weapons like yo-yos and baseball bats. The game is filled with cultural references to bands, videogames and more, has an excellent story, an excellent soundtrack, great, colourful graphics and tons more good stuff. Sadly, the game was never released in Europe, but we can always hope it shows up as an import game, right?
The ESRB (As well as the PEGI, earlier today) also rated the Neo Geo game Metal Slug. The ESRB has also rated the WiiWare games Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, Dr. Mario & Germ Buster (The ESRB lists it as Dr. Mario Wii - Its possible US name?) and Gyrostarr.
IT BEGINS.

It was my understanding that with Super Mario RPG, even though Nintendo published the title, that Square retains the rights to any non-Nintendo characters, i.e. Mallow, Geno, etc. Any chance of seeing this title on the VC is going to have to require Square's approval.

Considering we've only seen 2 Square titles (Actraiser and King's Knight, correct me if I'm wrong), they just don't appear very supportive of the VC.

Sweet, if this ever happens I'll finally have a chance to play it.
Sounds good to me!

But even that news won't satisfy Earthbound fans. How many games have been rated and then never released on VC?
Pro Wrestling comes to mind, but I'm sure there are others.
Pro Wrestling comes to mind, but I'm sure there are others.
Super Mario RPG was part of that list as well.

I think their mindset regarding the VC is more, we don't want to release anything on it for $8 when we can remake it on the DS or something and sell it for $40. With that in mind, I don't think that's as much of an option with Super Mario RPG since Nintendo probably wouldn't allow it. Or, if they did, they might make some sort of agreement with "let us release the original on the VC first" which would be fine in my book.
Super Mario RPG was part of that list as well.
It's not in the search anymore that I saw though.

I sort of mentioned this at some point, but there's some Square games on the Japanese VC that we (obviously) aren't getting. The biggest is Treasure Hunter G, which is an SNES era RPG game. The chances of it coming here with an official translation are slim to none (even though I contend that Square could easily go to all the fansites that have done all the work for them and offer to out-right buy the translation, and then insert it into their own ROM, which might literally take a day or so at most to get all set up).

As for the news on Earthbound, I'll believe it when I see it. My balls can't take the punishment anymore on that front.

Assuming it does happen, it still leaves a bitter aftertaste because it reinforces the idea that Nintendo still wants to ignore certain fanbases. Sure, we'd get the game, but only some 1.5 years after it should have been available, and only after an unofficial poll taken by their own magazine.

Alanis Morrissette could make that into a lyric into "Ironic Pt. 2" if she wanted.

I can predict an good RPG comes out this week. If you are wondering why, well A. I got finals this week (so it can slowly torture me) and B. I am buying a Shin Megami Tensai game tonight if all goes well (hopefully Nocturne if my GS somehow still has it), and along with FF III that will make 3 rpg games I need to play, lol.

Oh and that is great news for Earthbound, that is a Day 1 minute one purchase for me, lol. Lets hope all 3 mother games come over here.

That was sort of my hidden point, although I just never went into details. I guess Square assumes that if any popular titles were released on the VC, those titles would instantly reduce the value of any of their $40 DS remakes. This shouldn't be the case with Super Mario RPG since the likelihood of a remake without Nintendo's okay is never going to happen.

Needless to say, I still have my doubts on it being released due to Square's stubbornness overall. There's a couple of titles outside of the Final Fantasy franchise that I'm interested in seeing, even though they're likely to never have a remake.

The Saga Franchise anyone?

I've always wanted to play the romancing saga games from the snes , and saga frontier 1 and 2 were two of my favorite PS1 rpgs. I'd especially love to see a remake of saga frontier since lost of story bits and content were cut from the game to make it's release schedule. Restoring all those elements and reworking the game would be great.
Strell, what did you sell to the devil to get Eartbound rated by the ESRB and what is needed to seal the deal?
He only trades in souls and air conditioning units.

I'm withholding my newest model, which is powered by the tears of aliens living deep within the core of Pluto.

Lilboo, I thought you patented the "infamous sit-on punch." Might need to sue Renegade for that.

Just one more step folks...
http://kotaku.com/386812/another-pal-hanabi-festival-gradius-ii--cho-aniki-to-hit-vc

Last year Nintendo ran a little party for PAL customers called the "Hanabi Festival". For a month, they put a bunch of Japanese games up on the Virtual Console, games that had never been available outside of Japan. It went down well! So well they're running another one. This week, European and Australian Wii owners have been able to pick up Final Soldier, Columns III and Gradius II. In coming weeks? A lineup that includes Star Parodier, Puyo Puyo 2 and, amazingly (awesomely?), the original Cho Aniki.

It would be great if Cho Aniki came out here, just because I love shooters.

But, it'll scare the children, someone will sue, and then we won't get Earthbound at all instead of just before the Apocalypse.

Aw, Pokemon Puzzle League? The repetitive music and voice work make that that the most obnoxious version of Panel de Pon ever made. I want Tetris Attack with all the cute Yoshi graphics!

I'm sure there's a big crowd for those games, but it ain't me. Good to see 2 games again though.

I wonder if they'll do 0 (next week?) with the launch of WiiWare.

Renegade is suppose to come out this upcoming week

If they did, it wouldn't bother me at all - WiiWare's going to get a lot of attention with the Final Fantasy title, so if we see any release at all I'm thinking it'll be a crap one like King's Knight that we can all ignore.

Me either - I'm really excited for WiiWare. Cho Aniki is pretty much the only thing I would be more excited about than online Dr. Mario.
puzzle league is exactly like tetris attack, right? if so, I'll grab it soon.
It is Tetris Attack, but the Yoshi's Island characters have been swapped out for ones from the Pokemon anime. Beyond that, the N64 version's main addition was a 3D mode, where the blocks wrap around the outside of a cylinder instead of a 2D rectangular pit.

If you don't have the game, it's completely worth the $10 - it's a great puzzle game, there's a lot of content, and it shouldn't be too hard to ignore the characters if you're not a fan of Pokemon.

I am too overjoyed by this announcement. I was considering buying an old N64 just to play this game. This will definitely hold me over for a while. I'm only hoping that the seven or eight years I've grown since last playing this game will prove to be beneficial. I used to be terrible at finding combos. *crosses fingers*
Is there a list of WiiWare titles available at launch?
I'd like to know this too, there doesn't seem to be a "for sure" answer out there.
I'd like to know this too, there doesn't seem to be a "for sure" answer out there.
Take this with a grain of salt, but according to Wikipedia:

 • Defend Your Castle
 • Everyone's Pokémon Ranch
 • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King
 • Gyrostarr
 • LostWinds
 • Major League Eating: The Game
 • Protöthea
 • Star Soldier R
 • Toki Tori

I'm not sure how accurate that is, though; I could swear the new version of Dr. Mario was also a launch title, but I can't find a date for it online anywhere.
Yeah, DYC seems pretty cool. And 500 points is the perfect price.
Personally, I'm leaning more towards the big names - I want to try FF:CC, and Pokémon Ranch is incredibly tempting since I just bought Diamond at Radio Shack.

Gyrostarr looks good too, but I don't know much about it and I'll probably wait to see if it's any good before biting. Defend Your Castle looks okay, but the fact that there's about five thousand variations of it as flash games is making me reluctant to get it unless they've added something really special to the mix.

Everything is updated. Hooray!

Also, check this out:

Q6 I am personally enjoying WiiWare and Virtual Console but feel Wii’s flash memory size is not enough and annoyed that I need to use a SD memory card. Will this situation be improved?
A6 Iwata:
Statistically speaking, it is true that there are a small number of customers who feel that the flash memory is too small, while many others find that they have plenty of memory. However, because this small number of people are none other than the most avid players, we know we have to review the best possible solution to eliminate their inconvenience.

PLEASE, do something Nintendo. PLLLEEASE.

Sounds the same as the XBox and the friends list thing. "Oh it only affects a few people."

How does Nintendo even have statistics on that?
Sounds the same as the XBox and the friends list thing. "Oh it only affects a few people."

Hey lilboo, in case no one has said it in a while, thanks for keeping this thread up to date. I like checking here for information even if I'm not posting. Keep up the good work.

Is there any reason star fox hasn't been released?
Will they ever release star fox 2?
I hope they start to crank out a bunch of 64 games this summer.

You need to stop asking about this.

SF2 was never officially released. It is noted that it is completed content-wise, but the debugging process and other tracking operations were never done. As such, it is technically incomplete, and most likely prone to crashes and other things that would be caught during a technical work-over phase.

Hence, the chances of it being released are slim at best. It would be one of the great joys of the VC to have it be released simply because Nintendo could do that, but chances are they won't.
Is there any reason star fox hasn't been released?
Although Star Fox is a nintendo classic , and as such probably has a good chance of showing up on the virtual console , one reason it may not is because of Star Fox 64. Canonically (sp?) star fox 64 is a remake of the orignal game as well as having added features that were to be in the cancelled star fox 2. Since we already have 64 , they may feel that we "already have" the original star fox and have no need to release the snes game.

Not that I'm aware of.

At this point, I'd expect Super Mario World 2 to be the first SFX chip title.
