I actually have a theory now that Nintendo is trying to actively discourage further VC releases, and wants to slowly diminish it as a bullet point for their system.
I can't really figure out why exactly. Maybe they are finding it more difficult than they planned to get all the licensing/rights in order to release various games. Or maybe they have seen the increase in emulators/homebrew leading to a decrease in sales (which I want to point out I am framing from a PURE PARANOIA angle, and not from any sort of honest factual basis, much like the RIAA/MPAA's actions for the last 10 years). Or maybe no one wants to release their games on the VC because either Sony or Microsoft is offering them the ability to do so on their own systems, perhaps even paying them up front. Or maybe companies want to release updated versions (Bionic Commando). Or maybe companies simply want to hold onto their properties (Squeenix).
Whatever the reason, I think Nintendo might honestly try to transition VC releases into Wiiware releases, headlining the entire downloadable-game angle as something that includes "fresh new software." This will allow them to say that a Wiiware game - for all intents and purposes - is "equal" to "2-3 VC games," since it is "new" and has "new graphics" and "offers new gameplay choices."
This all said, despite the hopeful-lessness (a word I just made up, signifying false hope despite initial hopeful appearances) of Earthbound being rated and SMRPG supposedly coming out, I'm really thinking the VC is falling out of the picture. I'm sure the 10 million downloads in one year doesn't help Nintendo's bean-counters, since they know that represents a small number of people honestly using the service. Further, if GoNintendo's reports are to be believed, then only Nintendo first party software consistently sells well on the service (the top ten is repeatedly Mario and Zelda titles), which basically says to third parties that it's a wasted endeavor that won't have good returns.
I really, really hope I'm wrong about all of this. But Nintendo knows they can kill two birds with one stone here - slow/stop the VC releases = less space can be taken up by them = Nintendo's asinine way of dealing with
that issue, and getting people like me to shut up.
So yeah. Faith = zero. Levels have been falling rapidly for months now, but this is literally rock bottom at this point.
I mean we've reached a point where even us hardcore-ites with disposable cash simply
don't
ing care about the releases. That's just pathetic.
