I was an early adopter to the Wii U and as much as I would love DDP to continue, that would inevitably mean the internal storage on my console would run out, forcing me to buy an external drive for it.  I've also found that most of the stuff I buy for my wii U are mainly virtual console things or indie so it would take me a very long time to earn a $5 credit.  In 2 years, I've earned a whopping $10 in credit and only made it 1/2 way to my 3rd $5 credit.  I'm not saying that an extension to DDP is a bad thing, but the way I buy things, it just did not pan out as I hoped.

The biggest issue is that physical games go on sale so much more frequently that digital does.  This is not necessarily a Nintendo problem, but with all current-gen consoles that still want to push the sales towards a digital market. Only exception would be XB1 this time around since I do not plan on using the console much except for exclusive RPGS and shmups, I may go full digital everything else..

The rest of my rant (physical vs digital):

With hard drives being quite affordable these days, I'm very surprised 500GB is what they decided to go with out of the box.  Games are upwards of 25-50GB and I realize that means 10 - 20 games on your drive that you can easily manage ( #firstworldproblems), but there's a convenience factor of having all your games on the drive so you dont have to do that management that digital games have over physical.

I'd argue that managing the games on your hard drive is no more onerous than swapping a game in and out of your system.  Download speeds for a 50 GB game takes an overnight for most people, not a big deal I guess... but for those who really need the game asap, it could be.

All these things add up and still do not make sense to switch over to a digital format.  Having the older games playable in HD is a nice thing to have for the Wii U and is probably the only reason why I am spending my eShop credit I bought more than 2 years ago in a best buy sale.

Had to spend $18 and change to get at least one more $5 back. Got Shantae and the Pirate's Curse for $19.99 as I saw some pretty good reviews on it.

Gonna miss the Digital Deluxe promotion when it ends later today. I already knew it was limited and since it's Nintendo, who're very out of touch with their core customer base, they won't extended it.

They already extended it a full year longer than they said it would go.

I ended up grabbing Pushmo World, the Pikmin 3 DLC, and some Wii-to-Wii-U VC upgrades to round things out. No complaints here. I wish the DDP was continuing (I always, always prefer digital, and combined with the deals on eshop cards, it's been a lovely thing), but hey, neat while it lasted.

Pushmo World is a blast if you like puzzle games and/or Intelligent Systems' design sensibility and/or all things bizarre and Japanese, by the way.

I only needed $0.30 to get my last $5 from DDP.

Remember last year when they did all those $0.30 sales? The only game I didn't buy was Punch-Out!!, because I'd never been a fan. But if I had, it would've come out evenly. Curses.

Never been a fan of punch out? You deserve this.

yeah it was always december 2014 which is sad it was my only incentive to but some of this stuff
Exactly, it was a great incentive to try some games I wouldn't have otherwise. With the exception of Zelda, I doubt there's any games I'll get on launch this year now. I don't think I'll be back in the eshop unless there's a WayForward sale, a Curve Digital sale, or to redeem codes for Club Nintendo/Kickstarter games. Even that will be a sad experience. Curse you, Nintendo. Curse you for not giving me more free money.

Let this be a lessen to you not to look a gift $0.30 game in the mouth.

If you have CN coins to spare and don't have Metroid or Kirby 3 you can get those and redeem it and it will count. Or Super Mario Kart for Wii mode and pay the like $1.50 upgrade fee.

Otherwise it's time to buy the cheapest piece of shovelware you can find. Or a $4.99 game you actually want since it's basically free at that point if the alternative is to let it go to waste.

If I purchase games today I should still get credit for them right?
Wording on the site is unclear. It does say "before" December 31st, which I imagine is because it takes 24 hours to process purchases/issue points. You can call Nintendo customer service and ask, you might be in luck.

Yes, but I'd suggest not waiting too long to buy things. I made purchases late last night before Midnight that show up as being made on 12/31 on the DDP website, though I'm not sure what timezone their Midnight is based in.

Edit: And by my Midnight, I mean ET.

Are you going by the "Date Earned"? I thought that always used the date after the day they were actually purchased, it does for me at least. Everything I purchased yesterday morning shows "12/31".

I am finally done.  Got 5 codes with 6 points leftover.  All my purchases from yesterday also show 12/31 as the date, but the "As of 12/30/2014, information will be displayed within 24 hrs...." line shows 12/30, so I would expect it should still register for you last minute people but I would not risk past 9pm PST.

Codes have to be claimed by March, entered by June, but stay in your eshop point balance forever after entered.

Did the promotion get extended?

  • [NOTE] The Deluxe Digital Promotion will be discontinued on April 1, 2015. Please exchange your points for an activation code by March 31, 2015. Activation codes must be redeemed in the Nintendo eShop by June 30, 2015.

Did the promotion get extended?
No, the March 31st deadline is the date that you must click on the get activation button to generate an eshop code (if you still have one) then June 30th is the last day that code is redeemable.

Limited Time Promotion

Points will be earned until the end of December 2014.

Points must be exchanged to receive Nintendo eShop credit activation codes by the end of March 2015.

Codes must be redeemed for Nintendo eShop credit by the end of June 2015.

  • After the expiration date noted above, Points and codes will have no value and will be deleted.
  • Once an activation code is redeemed and credit is added to your Nintendo eShop balance, there is no deadline to use the funds.

On another note...I purchased 2 cheap games at 12:30am EST or so since when I checked the website the update on points was listed as PST. This morning my two games posted and I got one last $5 credit. It states: As of 12/31/2014(PST). Information will be displayed within 24 hours after downloading at the Nintendo eShop. So the site has updated for all purchases on the 31st already.

Nintendo eShop Must-Haves

Start the new year off right in the Nintendo eShop, which features must-have classic and current games. Check the Nintendo eShop each week in January (from Jan. 1 at 9 a.m. PT until Jan. 29 at 8:59 a.m. PT) for Nintendo eShop Must-Haves - they're the perfect way to build a collection of great games that you can enjoy for years to come.
First game is Shovel Knight WiiU/3DS for 10 dollars.

Though, why do I get the feeling NOA "insisted" sales should start in the New Year as opposed to leading up to it.

Which, I of course, bought hours ago at $15 just to get enough points for a final $5 certificate...

Got my last two DDP rewards. So I ended up with a total of $20. Stupidly realized I never redeemed my CN Platinum reward so that was 150 points I missed out on.

Probably grab Shovel Knight this week and see what all the fuss is about.

Here are the new deals for this week:

Shovel Knight - $9.99 - 33% Off - Ends 1/8

Unepic - $6.99 - 30% Off - Ends 1/22

New Releases:

Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire - GBA - $7.99

Is Shovel Knight the same content-wise on both platforms (Wii U / 3DS)?  Anyone have any preferences for one vs. the other?  I'll likely be playing the game mostly within range of my Wii U on either the Wii U controller or the 3DS, so portability isn't a factor.  Thanks.

It's the same game, so it's a matter of whether you want to play it on 3DS or Wii U.

Isn't there a street pass feature on the 3ds? I guess there is that
The 3DS has street pass but the WiiU has a MP mode. Biggest difference I could find. I decided to get the 3DS version because I'm more likely to play it and is a better fit on 3DS to me.

The way the street puts works actually sounds neat if you ever pass someone that used it.

Just as I tried to purchase Shovel Knight, my damned Gamepad started going nuts. I was able to get the game to work but I can only use the Pro Controller. I hope I don't have to send the system to Nintendo for repair. Anybody know what happens to your downloads if they have to repair your Wii U?

hmmm...do i wait for shovel knight to get cheaper on steam in the future or do i want to play it on my gamepad while in bed?

ill probably get it for my wii u. i feel like ill actually play it then
