So I'm replaying through Gears 1 and it makes me wish I was playing 2 or 3 instead. The Lancer saw barely works when enemies are on screen (one glitch occurred while I was sawing through the wall and a wretch);  hell, I bet most people don't even know about the secondary attack with guns.

The group command option is worthless, and I hate, hate, hate how you can revive a fallen soldier but you can't be rescued at all . The story is full of holes and gameplay gets repetitive - not to mention the detection is off whenever you're at a machine gun torrent.

Fortunately, Gears 2 and 3 fixes all of this.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good [but hard] game but the flaws really stand out. While playing, I remember a moment after backtracking through the path after you meet the Boomers for the first time, the graphics screw up big time.

I had never played Gears 1 before I got it free with Judgment. I always thought it was because I was playing on hardcore that I couldn't be revived.

It's like that on casual as well. "Casual", btw ,is not the same as "easy" on Gears 2 and 3 (and probably Judgement; I haven't played it yet); it's the same as normal mode.

I'm trying Gears 1 on Hardcore (one step above the lowest difficulty setting) and it's pretty damn hard. Enemies are stronger (Boomers can kill me immediately) and it takes longer to heal. I'm determined to beat it though.

I'm playing on Hardcore as well but I think I'll drop it down to casual and beat it quicker. Like you said, hardcore's a pain in the ass, especially not having 3 other characters in the squad to be cannon-fodder. Plus, I need to finish this as quickly as I can because I'm running out of room on my hard-drive.

I think Cliffy admitted in an interview later that the difficulty levels in Gears 1 were pretty skewed. Casual is a pretty stiff challenge, and Hardcore would pass for hard mode in most games. Gears 2 and 3 added the Normal mode and tuned all of the other modes to be way easier than they were in 1.

Yeah, Gears 2 had all easy achievements. Most of which you'd get through natural progression. Judgment was dirt easy as well. "Cheating" or not.

Countdown to 2014 tidbit:

Don't think this has been posted yet (courtesy @lifelower and @superberde):

The best way to end a fantastic year of gaming is to cram your stockings and pack your tree with tons of discounted games, add-ons and movies! FIFA 14, Grand Theft Auto V and Doctor Who Christmas Specials are all tasters of the great offers to come in Xbox's huge festive sale, from 17th to 31st December.

To get you started have a free movie on us from December 13th – 15th.
From http://www.xbox.com/en-gb/holiday2013

That is the UK xbox.com - I would imagine we should be getting similar offers in the States.

EDIT:

I think this is Israel's Xbox site: http://www.xbox.com/he-IL/holiday2013 It still lists FIFA 14 and GTA V, but omits the Doctor Who Christmas Specials and the free movie from Dec. 13-15.

To be fair, the whole series is full of plot holes. What happened to the Kryll after the first game? What the hell were the experimental tubes in the second game? What the hell is the queen? What the hell are the locusts? I Got more out of the story from reading the Gears of War artbook packed in the second and third game than I did playing either game. I Think I just looked at the game as a COG soldier's point of view without any real explanation of what the fuck is happening in the world around them.

Yeah, Gears 2 really seemed like it was setting up some big reveals in the next game about the nature of the Locust, what was the deal with the Sires, why does the Queen have a human form, etc. Then Gears 3 just kind of abandoned that setup and did something different instead.

EXACTLY man. Especially all the never explained father crap too.

For those that own the ACIII season pass, does it net you anything else besides the 3 episodes of DLC? (i.e. theme,avatar..etc).  Just wondering since the season pass is still listed at $30

Dammit, why isn't the list leaked already?!?!? :whistle2:x

EDIT:

The Spanish Xbox Site: http://www.xbox.com/es-ES/holiday2013 shows only FIFA 14 and GTA V but it's missing the Doctor Who part from the British site.

Anyone know what the 360 update was for yesterday? Can't find an official answer, just some rumor about collecting underage kids data for a new US law.

It's taking passport information for all those Oman / Bosnia visitors.

In all seriousness, that's all I could find as well.

They added additional security for child accounts.

Any child accounts created are charged 50 cents to an adult's CC in order to verify the adult knows

It's not just a rumor if it comes from @XboxSupport:

Xbox Support ‏@XboxSupport3

@ThePhantomBear Some changes have been made to how child accounts are managed and created. ^EB

This, this a thousand times these. I got to say, i really didn't expect a lot out of this series. You got a bunch a burly guys shooting at a bunch of mutant stuff and lots of body parts strewn about everywhere. Yet they had a decent set of characters, i totally did not like Cole at all in the beginning. Turns out the guy isn't that single minded, none of them are. GoW 3 has so many plot craters i don't know what to do with, they answered one question and left you with at least a dozen.

Things that bugged me:

Where the hell were Cole and Baird halfway through the game and how did they manage to UNITE all the former COG's. Why the locust even exist. Where they mutants, human abominations? Ice T? The only good thing out of this game was the last Carmine lived.

Man, i kind of want to play it and don't at the same time.

it'd be amazing to see a reduction in ad space. the home tab has 6 out of 9 squares dedicated to shoving all kinds of ads in my face. makes me kinda pissed every time I turn it on. I dont expect complete customization, but so many ads right when you boot up sucks. 'best possible experience' for the shareholders...

Story wise, yes alot of problems. Gameplay wise, holy fuck Horde 2.0 is still one of the bestest things ever. I Can't ever hate that game after playing Horde on GoW2 and going to 2.0 my head nearly exploded. Especially when first time I got to wave 10 and there were three Berserker's coming at me and my group's hiding spot and we were panicing, but having so much fun.

I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in the second one that they were all killed off by the lightmass bomb in the first game. And after checking, it was mentioned via collectible that this was what happened.
That seems like...such a lazy throwaway. They could've easily used that for the razor rain or whatever the hell it was called portion of GoW2.

bardockkun. Yeah. It would require them getting a REAL writer to come up with a story or at least a moderately decent explanation.

IGN is reporting that there is going to be a one day sale on Minecraft skin and texture packs tomorrow to celebrate 10 million sales on Xbox, for anyone that cares.  Too bad they aren't putting Minecraft itself on sale, although that's most likely due to the fact that it is selling so well without one.

"To celebrate, there will be a one-day sale tomorrow, December 14, on all of the game's skin and texture packs. All of this DLC, with the exception of the mash-up packs(both the Mass Effect and Skyrim ones), will be 50% off."

And it would have the easiest achievements in the series, if not for Seriously tipping the balance all by itself. I've got everything in 3 except for Seriously and the level prestige ones, and I'm not even good at Gears.
Quit being so modest, you're good at Gears.

I thought 1 & 2 were really easy for the most part. Maybe it's because I started on casual thinking it was going to be really hard, but I played through each difficulty one after the other on 1 and coasted for the most part except the first fight against lambent wretches, the first fight against the guys with bows on the platform and the final battle. Those parts gave me fits on ALL difficulties. 3 gets hard when you don't have DBNO unless you are in arcade with non-AI teamates.

I was looking forward to reveals on all of those topics and then it was as if those ideas were totally forgotten. Wasn't there a change in writers and the new crew felt 2's story was terrible and so they ignored it for the most part. Seems familiar anyway.

To the person who in a Spoiler Tag wondered about Baird and Cole's exploits in 3, I think there it is covered in Judgment.

Back OT, just saw on xbldb that a bunch of Minecraft stuff is half off. Not the game just DLC.

That explains it. Started typing my post and got distracted by the kids and got scooped!

Oh ok, thank you. How long ago was it 25% off? I might just go ahead and get the 3 dlcs this week instead of waiting around for another season pass sale that might not happen.

there were a bunch of season passes on sale in last year's countdown so waiting isn't a bad idea

Most of the skin pack trials include a few free skins that are unlocked for you to use. So with all the free trials you have plenty of skins to use at no cost.

I'm definitely going to pick up the Fantasy Texture Pack. That's the only texture pack that I don't already own.

Undecided if I want to get the skin packs. It would have been nice to see the Mash-up packs included in the sale. I already own all those anyway though.

I made the mistake of buying a few skin packs. There are too many that I want to use. Those bastards made a lot of good skins. I end up spending way too much time trying to decide which skin to use.

I know it's just a dollar, but didn't the Fantasy Texture Pack come out this week? Kind of a slap in the face to those that paid "full price"

(Not me, just saying, I will get it today probably)

Of course MvC will go on sale for like the 4th time in 3 months. *shakehead*
I already own all the MvC games from previous sales, so maybe I'll be on rage mode if I see I could've saved more money waiting a bit more. After all, I didn't even begun playing them.
