Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.

also add GOTY editions for other games like Dishonored, Borderlands 2, Batman ArkhamCity... etc, get all dlcs and just return the game. hehe aren't we all so smart )
Then again this method won't really work for BC on Xbox One. Either you own the DLC disc or you have the downloadable content on your profile, but just having a file on your console will not magically make it available to you on the other one.

Don't be scum. They actually shortened their return period years ago because of what you suggested. You might as well say you can play games for free if you pirate them.
I think they shortened their return period years ago because the policy itself, while understandable in light of the very real possibility that the merchandise one buys from GameStop may be defective, is kind of ripe for exploitation of all kinds (like, say, essentially renting a short game for free), but you do you, Internet Vigilante Defending A Multibillion-Dollar Corporation With Ad Hominems.

Shouldn't your morality stop you from essentially scamming/abusing Gamestop's policy?
Eh, my morality tends to be in favor of people doing what they can by bending rules to live cheaply in a capitalist society that will always reward the big guy (and especially a intermediary merchant like GameStop) with or without penny-ante fraud, especially on a site specifically pitched to some of those people.

I'm perfectly okay with encouraging people to consider that means of cheapness -- or, say, borrowing a friend's GOTY edition to do essentially the same thing -- but if you're going to buy the DLC digitally, you are at least getting a greater share of the revenue generated to the people who made the content you're buying than the zero percent you transfer by buying a used game from GameStop.

I'll note, though, that some of the GOTY/Legendary/etc. games have downloadable DLC that is incompatible with vanilla saves.

I love how everyone is a Robinhood these days - stealing from the rich to feed the poor. When you rob a bank, the bank doesnt lose the money, the people who saved at that bank lose the money.

I thought everyone loses the money.

If the bank is FDIC insured then it's covered by the fed up $250K per person which would mean we all get hit with it in the end. At least that's how I thought it worked.

Dying Light is taking a shot at the taken king situation :D/
Man, so many Californians are going to be begging for codes from this promotion.

I love it. Screwing over the little guy is not cool. Screwing over faceless corporations? A-OK.

Every retailer that sells video games used to have more generous return policies, but as you can imagine, a huge consumer base of relatively young people buying expensive products is ripe for exploiting lenient policies. Gamestop's used to be 14 days, Toys R Us used to be 30 days even for opened merchandise. But hey, you can still "return" $5 games to Walmart without a receipt.

Why even stop at free DLC from GOTY compilations? The smart money is on renting a new release for free.

When "installing" a 360 game the console is actually downloading from Live the 360 emulator and the iso adapted for the emulator, the disc is there just to make sure you own the game
That's the thing, my friend never had to reperform that "disc check" on the Xbone. When you install a game on the 360 using a disc, it leaves out that key part of the code that allows for play without disc. So I'm curious as to how my friend was able to bypass the check and start playing without disc.

Obligatory GWG prediction post...

:360: Watch Dogs
:360: Remember Me
:xb1: PVZ: Garden Warfare
:xb1: Stealth Inc. 2
Those are some pretty bold predictions. Even though Watch Dogs has fallen dramatically in price, still think it's too soon. Remember Me is probably much more likely. With PVZ in the Vault, I can't see that happening. And Stealth Inc. 2 is pretty new.

While we're changing targets: Screwing over "the little guy" is part of the business model what Walmart does on a daily basis, though that is sort of changing. It is the second-largest corporation in the world. Also: You can't return games (or most electronics) to Walmart without a receipt now, but, hey, what are facts?

The "smart money" used to be on renting a new video game for a week for about $1/day so you could check it out before plopping down $50-60 for it. Now, you're lucky if that game shows up at a Redbox (which has dramatically cut its stock of games for rent) for $2.50/day, and your other primary choice (unless you're lucky enough to have a regional rental establishment like Family Video) for trying it before you buy it (or a friend does) is Gamefly, which is notorious for being slow with new releases. You can watch readily available playthroughs, true, which no one could 10 years ago, but that's not the same as playing a game, and so caveat emptor applies in new ways.

Say you're cheap, and/or on a restricted income, and you've chosen video gaming as your entertainment budget line item. (Let's leave aside the discussion about the wisdom of an entertainment budget on a fixed income for this hypothetical's sake, and the tiresome if obvious suggestion of getting a better job, too.) How do you stretch your dollar?

Playing only free-to-play games? You're going to run into pay-to-win constraints on all of them, though the gradations vary, and you'll likely have to grind to make up for not paying an entry fee. Being very selective with your games and waiting for sales? Sure -- but don't buy any game on or near release day, because even the best games are going to have bugs requiring a lot of initial balancing at first or paid DLC that will be bundled with the game for the same price as the vanilla copy down the road. Beat and trade new releases that are short? You're still losing money on an awkward rental. Hoping for glitches? Isn't that just rooting for corporations to screw up and offer consumers a way to exploit them?

My suggestion: Let's let cheap, young, poor assholes, the "scum" of the earth, continue to point out that fellow consumers can exploit lenient policies that exist for legitimate reasons just like corporations exploit tax loopholes (and, really, they're less "loopholes" than "a tax code that they've had a hand in writing to their benefit," for the richest corporations) that exist for "legitimate reasons," and see if those people who just want to save $15 on DLC for a game -- one that a publisher's reissued in hopes of soaking up more residual income from an established product -- really do bankrupt or force substantial policy changes by retailers.

I'm cool with being called scum for urging the apparently immoral but fully legal exploitation of a corporation's policy, especially if it saves some folks some money. This site ain't called MoralAssGamer.

Fun fact: Gamestop used to give the yearly bonuses on Visa gift cards to get around income tax.

Uncle Sam did not approve.

Screwing people/corporations over is either right or wrong. You seem to insist that because Wal-Mart's practices are bad, it justifies bad action on your part - this is faulty logic. You are responsible for your actions alone, not someone else. If you chose to screw someone else over it is because you decided to do it.

So I was playing some of the campaign and some side missions on Batman last night, saved and turned off. Turn on today all the side missions have this on them http://i.imgur.com/yuhh1qG.gif?1 and I can't access them at all. Any help?
Is it possible that you have to progress in the main story a bit further - and then they might become available. I am just guessing. I have only put about 3 hours in. Haven't run into anything like that yet.

They were available last night, I even saved a firefighter, but now they have that icon over them.

How far into the game are you? Post it in spoilers if you can, but I know at one point in the game it wasn't letting me do side missions because a campaign mission 'ended' but I needed to do more for it. Also, some side missions you can only do so much in before they get locked away and you need to do more to progress further in them.

If it persists then it seems like an issue.

As for the firefighters, I had that lock away, but then it became available as the police scanner said they had spotted one and that allowed me to continue further with it.

Well, corporations are people, so it's all wrong, isn't it, if we're dealing in moral absolutes?

Walmart's practices are bad and hurt more people in the aggregate, shorting millions of workers on billions in wages. My own practices -- which I'll note here amount to having reminded folks 'round these parts of that GameStop policy, and having taken advantage of it twice, ever, I think -- have probably cost GameStop (and its faultless employees and shareholders) ... like a few hundred bucks, maybe?

They're my actions; I'm not saying they are or aren't justified, except in the sense that I decided that they were rational for me, because justification and judgment aren't really internal things. I'm gonna keep on being okay, I think.

Justification and judgment are internal things. Research the meanings.

You also rationalized it, justified it and made a judgment to yourself with that final sentence. It almost reads like a sociopathic statement.

If your actions are fine, just state that they are fine and explain why. You have no need to bring up the wrong doing of others except to denote comparison. You did it in the post I originally quoted and again in the post I am quoting above. Can you tell me why you are doing it? It is not a logical argument to say that something is wrong and in the next paragraph indicate that it is OK if you do it.

As for the firefighters, I had that lock away, but then it became available as the police scanner said they had spotted one and that allowed me to continue further with it.
Not sure how to post a spoiler tag on here, but I just finished a big mission in the campaign and Im at 20% and now the side missions are back. That's odd, was it like that for the past Batman games?

Personally, people are going to engage in sketchy stuff (cheating their grandparents out of SSI payments, purchasing games to install the DLC and then returning for a full refund, running red lights, finding loopholes to limit any personal responsibility/accountability for anything, purchasing multiple CEs to re-sell - I'm not saying all those are equally sketchy, just sketchy) - there are a lot of not great people in the world, so statistically, some of them are in this thread.  We get it, you're not a great person and you're ok with that.  But this isn't the 'how to exploit life' thread, this is about XBL deals/discounts from the marketplace.

Equating criminal activity with non-criminal activity is not a good way to start your argument. You get an F for failure.

Go away.

I don't know if it's been posted yet, but here's Bungie "listening" to the fans and offering the digital content from the Collector's Edition separately...for $20.

Said content consists of 3 Class-specific items, 3 shaders and 3 emotes.

P.S. For non-Destiny players, $20 is the price of the previous two DLCs.

You're one of the main advocates for not paying for DLC, so I'm not surprised with your defensiveness or inability to comprehend the larger point - which remains - do whatever you want, but this isn't the thread to discuss exploitation. It's the XBL Marketplace Deals thread, i.e. deals you can find on the XBL Marketplace. Not all of life or Gamestop. The title and OP should have tipped you off, though reading doesn't appear a strong suit?

BTW, that was a really swell comeback, thanks, and I'm glad you're able to match letters of the alphabet with a word that starts with the same - hopefully, you'll be able to find employment with that skill and be able to afford DLC in the future.
