Play Black Flag if you haven't. Easily the best one. Great story, fun open world environment, awesome characters you actually get attached to. Go sail away!

It's been out one month so far and the second episode is out now with episode three being out next month. Beyond that, the final three episodes are just announced for release later this year, so those are up in the air. They've released a big update before the new episode to address a number of issues, which is good to see the great support so far. If you just want the whole thing, the retail version is going to be out January 2017 or you can grab the bundle by year's end.

I don't know about PC or Xbox One, but both forms of Hitman made the Top 20 last month on PS4 with the $60 Full Experience being surprisingly high compared to the Intro Pack. SteamSpy suggests it's reached about 160k there so far, which seems pretty good for this episodic model.

Play 2 and Brotherhood as well (and Revelations imo to finish Ezio's trilogy). And Rogue if you enjoy Black Flag.

I loved the series up until Black Flag, but sailing isn't my cup of tea. I was really invested in the characters and storyline from the games before, and Black Flag almost seemed to start a whole new story (after AC3's travesty of a game/ending), or at least from what I played of it. So no, you're probably not missing anything, other than some great games. I recommend AC2 and Brotherhood (my personal favorite) heavily.

I do need to try Black Flag again. I was just so initially turned off by what they did with the storyline that I just didn't care anymore, and I didn't have the patience for the sailing parts.

I would get all of the AC2 DLC before you start the game. The game treats the DLC as "deleted scenes" and inserts them into the main storyline seamlessly. You'll be missing out on storyline if you don't get it. Not essential storyline, but still storyline. The game awkwardly has a narrator tell you what happens in the DLC when you get to that point in the game if you don't have it installed.

Brotherhood's DLC was okay but skippable. Easy achievements but it's more of the same and pretty forgettable.

I can't comment on Black Flag's DLC, but other than Freedom Cry which is almost a whole new game, it's skippable.

Not a clone but it takes a lot of the formula for fantastic gameplay and a good lighthearted rescuing knight story, it has a lot of Megaman, a little Ducktales and the music on it is just delightful. GET IT NOW!

There is an overarching story (the modern day stuff) that goes from the first AC all the way to AC3 and beyond, but the problem was that by AC3 everyone just got tired of them. They were too invested in the characters they spent 90% of their time playing as, not the modern day counterparts. In AC4 it's the first one to sort of do away with a lot of the overarching story. You play as a nameless faceless character (first person perspective) and you run around doing a couple chores for some side characters. That's about it.

In my opinion if you don't want to invest the time or money into playing all the older games just start with AC4. You're talking about playing AC, AC2, AC: Brotherhood, AC: Revelations, AC3 all before you get to the pirate game. Lots of stuff to plow through.

I think 4.99 would have made the choices much easier

xbox always tends to be higher I could probably do better on psn for this franchise

I know that I'll probably never play most of them but it's such a popular franchise and I like to collect it feels like I am leaving something out by not getting at least the "best" ones

if I was smart I would just play 4 and maybe buy the dlc for it to add to the experience but collecting usually isn't a very smart hobby

Part of the reason I love the earlier games is because of the modern-day characters. And then Ubisoft just...decided not to go anywhere with the characters anymore. A mistake, in my opinion. I no longer had a reason to keep playing, as the games have little-to-no connection with each other anymore.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag feels like a reboot, in many ways. If you dig around the office modern-day, you'll uncover a lot of the mythology of the series - and spoil yourself a bit regarding the earlier titles. You'll get a taste of what makes the series interesting, all the while playing a title that is quite self-contained; no need to know what happened before or where the series was to go after.

I enjoyed Rogue...but its story isn't as interesting and it is the one recent Creed title whose story relies heavily on past titles.

I'm about halfway through Unity, and I think its mechanics are more refined than past entries, but its world just isn't as much fun to inhabit. I mean, its truly beautiful - but little else. I had high hopes for its vaunted introduction of a RPG class system...but it seems the player doesn't need to specialize if they just plow through the content; you'll unlock just about everything in due course.

The latest game, Syndicate, is something I haven't played yet. Many regard it as a return to form. Distinct British humor and music, with a whimsical take on the era. The twins apparently are very charming.

Worth noting that the gameplay of Unity and Syndicate do not revolve around sailing, so they'd be different enough from Black Flag to keep it all from being to same-zee. Apparently the latter two titles are even less relevant to the modern-day over-arching narrrative than Black Flag.

Super Mario Bros. 3 + Mega Man + DuckTales. They've also added an entire new campaign for free earlier this year and have two more coming later this year that play differently from the main campaign, which should be rewarded when compared to the season pass-focused games we see these days.

IV seems to be a popular recommendation but I thought it was kind of a tedious game tbh. In my opinion, the Ezio games, especially II and Brotherhood, are far and away better. If I had started with Black Flag I probably would not have played any more AC games after that.

thanks, since I had #4 from gwg I snagged the single player dlc and will eventually play that

I've decided I can probably wait till the prices are better as 8 bucks a piece for the older ones and 12 bucks for rogue isn't that great of a deal. Rogue physical is cheaper on amazon and I could get the 2 collections they have for cheaper per in physical

I don't really want any more physical from last gen so I will hold out for 4.99 for the older bunch

maybe I'll get lucky and a larger collection will comes out for current gen or psn will have lower prices someday which is why I am spoiled with the 4.99 price tag

I know that there were troubles that kept it from coming out with the other systems' releases, but they acted like they would still try to figure out how to get it out there. Pretty sure it had to do the print run Microsoft requires for physical releases. Doubt we'll see a physical release for the Xbox.
 
AC 2 was my personal favorite. It was awesome watching Ezio turn from spoiled punk into badass assassin was really fun. I also enjoyed the modern day aspect of it. Finding the hidden ??? (Can't remember what they were called) and putting that puzzle together, building towards a much larger conspiracy kept me hooked.

Honestly, the only AC dlc I remember is the davinci disappearance from brotherhood.

I know that I own and have played the AC2 dlc, and I definitely don't recall NOT enjoying it. The dlc takes place later on in the game, towards the end and adds to the whole big picture/conspiracy thing. If you play through the first half of the game and really enjoy that aspect of it and want more, definitely get the dlc. It isn't necessary though.

thanks, I think my approach will be playing a game then deciding if I enjoyed it enough to buy the dlc then move on to the next

I decided to skip AC1 because I have read all the pros and cons and decided starting at 2 won't kill me and I can save that 8 bucks for potential dlc I will want

I'm going to play them in order of release so that I do not ruin the appreciation of progression that the series is bound to offer

Since they didn't do a 2016 game it's as good of a time as any to get caught up so if i end up liking the games I can join in the excitement for whatever direction they take the franchise in 2017

Good call. I started 1 and just couldn't get into it. I was immediately sucked in by 2, though. The first one is totally skippable, and probably recommended to skip it, so it doesn't turn you off from the whole series.

I started 3 as well and ended up skipping it. And going into 4 I don't feel like I missed anything. I could be wrong, that's just my thoughts.

AC2 is the perfect introduction to the series and just a damn awesome game. Brotherhood and Revelations are great too.

AC3 is a bad game. Cool theme and characters, good graphics, but the missions are just not fun.

all that native themed dlc with animal powers looks like something I'd love

too bad it wasn't stand alone or a helluva lot cheaper

 
I have played all of the Assassin's Creed games up to Syndicate (Still finishing Unity). I would say that a new player should just check out some of the greatest hits of the series. 

  • Assassin's Creed II 
  • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (The best Assassin's Creed game ever made)
  • Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag (Terrific game, not much of an Assassin's Creed game though.)
My opinion on some of the others. 

 

  • Assassin's Creed (Really cool in it's time. Hasn't aged well)
  • Assassin's Creed Revelations (I maybe like this better than Brotherhood. It was the refinement of the moving parts in Brotherhood. 
  • Assassin's Creed III (Not great. Never really finished it.)
  • Assassin's Creed Unity (The multiplayer is a neat idea. However, it seems like Assassin's Creed by the numbers.)
