Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Speaking of BC, has anyone found any info of Dust an Elysian tale coming to BC? A google search just shows a tweet the developer made three years ago saying “I hope so”. Meanwhile he’s made a PS4 and switch version and an entirely new game (never stop sneaking). I’m tempted to just spend $11 and get the switch version. I started it thanks to GWG and I’d like to finish it on my x1x.

All because I’m too lazy to dig out my 360 and see if it still works. First world Problems.

No clue about BC, but that game's really fantastic. Definitely play it one or way another. I probably wouldn't hold my breath on it becoming BC at this point (but who knows), and would be doing yourself a disservice to wait around just for it to never do so.

I had it on 360 and since I’m too lazy to plug in that I actually got the iOS version a while back. It controls surprisingly well on mobile. Honestly got it not out of laziness but like to have some decent games on the go.

I gave up waiting for Dust to go BC so I picked up the remaster at full price ($15) for the PS4 after it coming highly recommended and it plays beautifully at 1080p 60fps compared to 30 fps on the xbox 360. Really strange that it never made it to the Xbox One considering it was originally an xbox console exclusive! I wonder what went wrong there.

As for Lego City Undercover. It's my all time favorite lego game. Played it on the Wii U and picked it up on the xbox for the achievements. Had no idea they added co-op; Pretty cool!

So far the backlog focus is paying off. 3 completed games for far in 2019. Now it was Unmechanical: Extended Edition, Tacoma and Manual Samuel but they are off the list at least.

Posting the haul is the best part of any sale.  With one hour left to go on the Countdown sale, here's my haul.

Burnout Paradise Remastered

De Blob

De Blob 2

Goat Simulator DLC Bundle

Infinite Minigolf

Lego Marvel's Avengers Deluxe

Lego Jurassic Park

Masters of Sex, Season 1 (TV)

Mortal Kombat XL

Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2: Frosty Deluxe Edition

Riptide GP: Renegade

Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Season 1 (TV)

Spartacus: War of the Damned, Season 1 (TV)

SSX 3

The Lego Movie Videogame

Valley

Weeds, Season 1 (TV)

Weeds, Season 2 (TV)

Willy the 1st (movie)

Yes, it's a lot of games (and movies and TV episodes), but I'm proud to say that none of my single purchases cost more than $7.50.  Most of them were paid for with Microsoft Rewards Xbox gift cards.  I've already started playing Burnout, Infinite Minigolf, Mortal Kombat, Plants vs Zombies, and Riptide, and I plan to continue enjoying all of them over the next several months since my wallet is still recovering from the holidays.

Burn the heathens! (or maybe It's a publisher issue. I have no idea)

I can't decide if I should buy AC Odyssey now. I heard its better then Origins but I haven't finished Red Dead 2 yet.

Edit: Screw it I bought it lol

Haul:

Valley 2.99

Tacoma 4.99

I think I have a problem, if I buy something expensive in the sale I regret it cause I won’t probably play it and then if I don’t buy shit I regret it right after the sale ends lol.

I got $100 expiring next month and I still didn’t pull the trigger on hardly anything smh.

Same here. 3 (short) games finished already and I escaped the big sale without spending a dime.

However, I remember starting like this in 2018 too but before long I was back to buying games and not playing them haha. Let's see how long we can keep this up.

With Game Pass, EA Access and Games w/ Gold, there really is a lot less of a desire to pull the trigger on a deal for the backlog. Not to mention, the deals have been pretty ho-hum.

Seriously, GamePass in particular has really slowed down my spending on games, which is awesome.

Didn't buy much. Wasn't even inclined to buy much. I got SSX3 and Gyruss (which wasn't even on sale!) and I think that might have been it. Over on the PS4 side of things, I grabbed Fighting EX Layer and Metal Gear Solid 3 for Vita. Sony had by far the best sale of the two companies, but even then I didn't grab all that much.

Which dead rising would you guys prefer out of DR, DR2, and DR2 Off The Record?
Depends what you're looking for. 1 is generally considered the best designed overall, but personally 2 is my favorite. Off the Record is a non-canon version of 2 that stars the character from the first game, with what I would consider a worse story, but it does have the most content with a new area added to the main map and a large free-form mode where you just screw around on the map with several challenges available.

Personally I would probably say start with 1, keeping in mind it's a somewhat difficult game designed for you to restart the story with you increased abilities and map/game knowledge. All three of these games have this design in mind but got a bit easier with more save points as time went on. The free-form mode in Off the Record sounds cooler than it is. You can always screw around with the normal game but you either have to go back to an old save or restart if you mess around for too long. The free mode doesn't actually do much and the challenges are really only fun if you are really into the series. If you must have co-op, you need either 2 or OTR, it wasn't in 1.

You will have some people, probably even in this thread, trashing these older games for being too hard, but I think the decrease in quality with caving to these demands from non-fans is what tanked this series and recently killed the studio, 3 and especially 4 are much worse games than the 360 era releases. 3 has some positives, but 4 learned all the wrong lessons and might has well been a different series.

With Dust I'm not sure what the deal is. It looks like it was self-published for PS4 and Switch, but the original 360 release and Steam both still say Microsoft Studios. I would guess it's either:

1. The 360 emulator actually has some issue with this game for some reason. A quick look at the Wiki for the engine the game uses shows at least a handful of other games that also use it have made to BC, as well as a few current gen games that use like Celeste and Owlboy. Still, there could be some kind of issue.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_XNA#Partial_list_of_games_and_companies_that_use_XNA

2. The one man team that is the developer wants to do a real port to presumably make more money. It seems like he probably would have announced it by now though. If he doesn't see it as worth it I don't see what the harm of BC would be, unless MS has control over pricing and maybe he doesn't wasn't it to be 75% off during sales to undercut the other platforms the he likely makes more of a cut on.

Got an email from MS saying if you buy one of their 50 best selling eBooks of 2018, you get a $5 gift card.

Two of the books (“Everything Happens for a Reason” and the one I know you all are dying for “Cutting Machine Crafts”) are only $2.99. Hey, getting an extra $2 back for free is something. :)

Edit: Or if you don’t mind spending a few bucks, this one from John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight (a parody of a children’s book by Mike Pence’s wife) is $7.20 but 100% of the proceeds go to The Trevor Project and AIDS United. (And no, I am not trying to start a political fight here. I mean it’s for charity).

Books...WITHOUT PICTURES??? EWWWWWWWWW!!!!!

And also today I learned Microsoft sells books.

A lot of people hate on Dead Rising 4 for reasons maybe I don't understand having not played the first 3 games in the series but coming at from the perspective of not having much in the way of expectations I really enjoyed it. I found it to be really fun and funny in a lot of places. People say it lacks challenge which is true its a little easy but not everything has to be a slog to get through. The over the top weapon combinations, the costumes, the sense of humor from Frank West all made for a fun experience enough to entertain my wife and push me through the end of the game.

Played about 10 minutes of DR3 and decided it was too serious and quit.

So I clicked on the link above for books and the link didn't work and I searched for "book" in the Microsoft store search bar.  5th on the category list (and last) is the Books section after apps, games, TV, and movie categories.  Microsoft is really pushing their books hard, I suppose.

The problem with Dead Rising 4 boils down to challenge, like you said. Dead Rising has never been a hard  series or anything but they stripped out and neutred too many parts of the series without adding enough back to it.

I managed to complete DR4's main campaign with some enjoyment but any and all things involving it's multiplayer and DLCs were over the top awful to the point where I questioned if the game was literally broken on many occasions... (I think that it actually was for a point maybe patched but never really fixed...) I think all the other DRs are put together much better in terms of challenge and solid game design.

So- my company just laid off myself and the rest of the department (ecommerce), effective immediately.
Pros: no longer commuting 5+ hours, time for playing through my backlog
Cons: I have to find a job so I can support my family. And I started to cut alcohol to drop weight

2019 comes out swinging.

#sidebar: 'Rise of the Tomb Raider' is pretty fantastic. Highly recommend it

Sorry to hear that! Hope you find something quickly.

I've had fun with all of them but I poured the most time into DR1. OTR I go back to for sandbox mode cuz yeah I agree, that story ain't good. The combo weapons are a big draw for me in the later games because of the nuttiness involved.

DR4 just really screwed the pooch with the power armor imo. Too much effort to fully amp up for such a small payoff.

DR3 is the most serious, more so than the previous games in the series. It's one of the problems it has but I don't think that alone was the deal breaker. The extreme easiness is what killed the game from me, like the ability to get any previously picked up weapon, including combo weapons even, from any save room at any time. Plus the open world design basically killed the old "save at bathrooms" design the older games use, meaning you can't really play it in the old way at all. Plus even the harder modes give WAY too much time so you can easily do all missions, and combo vehiciles are too good.

I can see getting more enjoyment out of 4 if you haven't played the old games, but there are just too many glaring issues if you do have history. Stuff like Frank basically being a completely different character in appearance, voice, and actions. The writing style is completely different, the mech suit makes you way too overpowered even worse than 3's vehicles, a lot of "new" combo weapons are just reskins with a different element, the removal of Psychopaths was a big loss too though I heard they were patched back in after a year. The writing and story alone put me off to begin with as a fan, but fact that so many small items were made non-usable bothered me pretty bad, along with most of the stores in the mall not being open. With 4, Capcom brought in new creative leads that weren't fans of the old games and it showed, the director didn't even stay there past the launch of the game so I think it's safe to say he wasn't passionate about the project, I think that lead to a lot of the issues fans of the series had. I'm not saying it's completely trash as a game, but it's hard to separate my thoughts out that way since I love the old ones, and when compared to those I just think it's bad.

I'm sorry that happened to you. Same thing happened to me in June. Try not to take it too hard. Everything will work out. I got caught up on quite a few games during my time off lol. I think in August I gained more gamerscore than any month ever.

Hopefully you can find something closer, didn't realize you still were doing that insane commute.

Damn that sucks. About 75% of my team at work was laid off at the end of the year including my boss to outsourcing. Luckily I was among the group they kept to transfer to other teams.

But I have been laid off twice in my life and it is an awful time with the stress of not knowing how you will be paying the bills once any severance or unemployment ends. But both times I ended up ahead in the long run with better jobs.

Wishing you the best of luck and hope it too brings you better opportunities.

I'm sure you will score a better job soon, good luck!

And it's probably for the best if it was 5+ hours commute. I did 5+ hours commute for 3 full years once and I realized that it is terrible for not only my body but my mind. A lot of stress builds up over time, without you knowing, and it really affects you. Hopefully your next position will be much closer!

I can't fathom a 5 hour commute.  Mine is literally about 5 minutes when I don't take the kids to school.  I know i'm lucky.  It feels like someone could find a second job in the same 5 hours to make up some loss of income for a lower paying job with less commute.  I know it's easier said than done, though.
