Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Like most people who hear a Souls comparison, I get worried about unnecessary difficulty. As someone who likes to coast through on easy difficulty, that is an option in this right?
You can just play on Story mode and lay waste to everything and it doesn't change anything story wise. I'm just doing Normal, combat is still fun, I definitely die once in awhile but a save point was usually right around the corner from where I was.

Since Contra: Rogue Corps is free to play this weekend, I downloaded it. I have to say that I don't really like it. Putting a required cool-down on the character's gun is stupid. One of the things that made the Contra series great is just shooting things and watching them blow up. Having to stop shooting long enough to let your gun recharge takes you out of the action for way too long and makes you a sitting duck.
Well, those reviews never got me interested in it, so this is no surprise at it being terrible. To which I can say, hooray! I Got plenty of other great games to play and don't need more waiting for me!

My favorite Fallen Order thing: you die to an enemy and it's loading screen and back to the save point. Miss a jump fall down a chasm and it's instantly back to where you were to try again.

Tip: enemies don't like hallways. If there's a door leading down a hall you can cheese some encounters by staying in the hall and using hit and run tactics. Oggdo Boggdo killed me at least 5 times, then I cheesed him.

1080p mode is not the preferred way for me. Normal/1440p is locked at 30fps and hits it pretty solid. Performance mode is highly variable framerate. Higher is nice but in this case I actually find the stability better. Patches are definitely needed.

That controller does look cool, but for $139 I’d rather put that towards the new elite controller.
I’ve been enjoying Jedi fallen order, it’s not breaking the mold as far as new and innovative, but it’s taken things from Sekiro, uncharted, and metroid and is using them pretty well so far. I’m hoping it does well so Respawn studios can make Titanfall 3, but we all know that if it does well EA will force them to keep churning out sequels. Right now the game needs a patch or two to smooth out some smaller details, and hopefully a new textures pack for the cutscenes, cause both Cal and Cere’s skin looks like it was painted with Microsoft paint in some scenes. Doesn’t help I’m looking at scenes through Hideo Kojima glasses after playing Death Stranding.

There was something you could have did later if you just ignored him and came back. Haha to add to the "Is it Dark Souls" confusion it's the exact same move you do to the very first boss encounter in Dark Souls.

I think that a lot of the new games that are a modern installment of a previously successful franchise try too hard. It's kind of like when every sports game went "extreme" in the early 2000s to capitalize on a trend that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater started. Seems kind of fake.

When the f-bomb got dropped during the opening cinema of Contra: Rogue Corps, I just shook my head. Seems like it wants to be a cross between Gears of War and Madworld, but nobody told the developer that it was unnecessary to mimic those games at this point in time.

On an unrelated note, I finally bought in on Game Pass. Strangely enough, it wasn't really the "buy 3 months for $1" offer although that sealed the deal. It was the fact that I could download one of those old SNK arcade games (Metal Slug X), play it with infinite continues, and beat the game quickly for the three achievements that I needed for this week's Microsoft Rewards quest. But I might try out Outer Worlds now that I can.

Never played it, don't like stamina governing attack.

Controller is nice like the Titanfall 2 one. Way too expensive. Is it built in battery like Elite v2?

I gotta say, it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it's still not very good. I played it for an hour and honestly, the modern game design additions is making me reluctant to go back. Cooldown, grinding, upgrading, this shit feels like it's wasting time and trying to pad the game out, so I just spent $60 and bought a new copy of Contra 4 off ebay.

It always fascinates me how positive/negative reviews have a different impact for people. Like if there's 10 positive reviews for a movie or game but one negative review, people value the negative review very high. Or excuses are made for the positive reviews like being easy to please. People are very quick to dismiss a positive review but quick to accept the negative review.

I'm not talking about you, just people in general. You see it in product reviews too. There can be hundreds of good reviews on Amazon but if you scroll and see one bad review about it breaking, you might look for a different product. I'm sure i've done that before lol
At the time of my posting, there were only two reviews up that I could find: IGN and Eurogamer. IGN read like a fanboy that was desperate for a good Star Wars game ever since BF2 was a total bomb (and really it was more about loot boxes, the game was fine) and was ready to rally behind anything that was 'good enough'. The other reviewer genuinely liked the game out of the gate, but ultimately didn't like it in the end. They admitted it was cumbersome because they were forced to rush through it in four days (screams review copies went out super late) but given more time, they would have become bored.

For me it's about reading between the lines and not being quick to adopt reviews one way or the other. I've been burned plenty by glowing reviews for something I thought was complete dogshit (/GLARE ROGUE ONE) so when someone is against the grain, I want to know why. Are they being petty or do they bring up a valid point that other people are willing to overlook because of rose-tinted glasses? In the end, my gut feelings are usually never wrong and when I see near-perfect scores everywhere that completely contradicts my own personal take from just observing, I'm suspicious.

I had more fun playing both of the PlayStation 2 Contra games that I had with this entry. I might fire up the Xbox One game once more before I delete it, but I wouldn't buy it outright even if it was really cheap. I hate it that much. Sad because I really like Contra as a series.

IGN probably too gracious of a score and Eurogamer too harsh. But in the end I’m having a blast with Fallen Order and I’m the only one that matters to me.

I was watching Maximilian Dood stream SWJFO on the hardest difficulty and his experience was similar to the latter reviewer. He was having lots of fun at first but dropped it halfway through the 2nd stream (boredom due to repetitiveness, lacking character progression, jank combat and camera) to go back to Death Stranding - a game that he was initially very down on but got addicted to after playing for a while.

I’ve got a 3 year old Western Digital 3TB My book that is making more noise than it used to. I think it might be failing. Is there any recommendations y’all might have to replace it with?

try plugging into a PC and running CrystalDiskInfo on it. Might be able to see if it's showing caution or good. Be sure not to format the drive if your PC asks you to.

As for drives, there's a 6TB in Donken's link for $99 or just wait for Black Friday since we're pretty close.

I just bought this, but haven’t installed it yet:
WD 8TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBWLG0080HBK-NESN https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D5V2ZXD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_P-h0DbJ7WW8WA

Thanks for the suggestion and info on checking it. If I get one, I’ll probably do it before Black Friday just because I hate dealing with that.
Do y’all have an opinion on the ones that don’t use a ac power supply. Has anyone used two external HDs on an Xbox at the same time?

I've used two USB powered externals on my X since day 1 and have had no issues

I ran CrystalDiskinfo and it has it’s status says good at 36 degrees Celsius. That’s sounds like everything is fine but the vibration it gets sometimes when it’s been reading lately, which seems more frequent than usual, is concerning.

Especially if we can get USB C both ways going forward so we can have reliable power and speed.

I know I've been hearing a bit of sound from my 4TB external. It's probably the same model as the rest of you. I got mine right around launch.

I guess either I lucked out or they're giving that GPU deal for EA Access, Discord Nitro, and Spotify Premium to existing GPU members as I saw the box someone mentioned a couple of days ago on my dash to claim them just now.

I'm closing in on 100,000 Reward Points. Goddammit, Microsoft. Put those XBox credit on sale so I can continue buying things for free at a good volume while you sell my search information to random companies. Companies who will know I search for "Texas Steakhouses" and "Texas Steakhouse" followed by "Texas Steakhous" and so on until I get a longer suggestion.

I am sitting on 130,000 and counting myself lol. Where are the hot deals? Seems like they have disappeared.

It's funny because I do the exact same thing

I dont think we will see them anymore honestly. I cashed out and got fallen order and mortal kombat premium for "free". Got back 10k in points as well.

Age of Empires 2 is so awesome. Great remake.

Not sure if this will help anyone but I had some weird issues going on with my Xbox One X for the last month that I was finally able to fix:

I had a couple of games that had excessive load times when I launched them. Fallout 4 would sit on a black load screen for about 2 min. before loading the title screen, Forza Horizon 2 would take about 2 min. before starting, and Dead by Daylight would get to the title screen but then take up to 7 minutes to load character data. Sometimes that game would just fail to launch at all. The Master Chief Collection would take 5 min. to load and then crash when I chose a game. I thought maybe something was just wrong with these games specifically because games like Forza Horizon 4, Layer of Fear 2, and Red Dead 2 loaded quick and easy. I tried holding the power button to cycle the system, clearing the cache, erasing the alternate mac address, and reinstalling one of the games and it fixed nothing. The install spot didn't matter either, some of the games were on internal and some on external drives. After having a couple of games crash in a row stopping me from having a game night, I was ready to try a factory reset. Thankfully there is an option on Xbox to do this without deleting your games and apps:

It's still a bit of a pain in the ass because it deletes your saves and settings. So you have to go through a first time set up again and download your game saves from the cloud again, but all your games are still installed and ready to play. After doing this all my games launch fast again. In fact, everything on my Xbox seems to be running really smooth. I have a launch version of X, so maybe somewhere along the way an update didn't install properly. But it feels great having a quick and snappy system again.

On a side note, doing this reset also fixed almost every mislabeled game in my game library. None of my Resident Evils are under Biohazard anymore. Every single Tom Clancy game is under the letter T. Layers of Fear 2 is spelled out and no longer under LoF2. Skyrim and Morrowind are now under Elder Scroll III and V respectively, but strangely Elder Scrolls IV is back under Oblivion again. I really don't know what dictates a game's name on Xbox's library anymore...

I agree. Not too big of a deal to be honest. The percent off has been reduced over the years. I will probably get Fallen order soon as well.

That’s most of my concern. I can hear it start to spin up when nothing is downloading and I’m using something that’s not on my external drive. Even though the test I ran said it’s in good status, it seems like the noise has been increasing. Having a second newer drive would be nice to lessen the wear and tear of my current one and also have one ready to take over if it dies.

I’m also hoping for an Xbox credit hot deal with the Black Friday sale approaching. I’m also running out of hard drive space - anybody know how to convert a WD usb external from ps4 formatted to being able to work on XB1?

Should just be able to plug it into the xbox and it will ask to reformat it. If that doesn't work maybe plug it into the PC first and wipe it there and then plug it into the xbox.

So, what exactly is Discord? I’m old and set in my ways, so I’ve never used it before, but it’s the one game pass reward I’m actually eligible to use.

It’s like a chat version of Reddit. I don’t really like it TBH. Navigation is annoying.
I agree. The navigation is only made worse with how cluttered having multiple discord servers connected. Depending on how many servers you connect to, it just becomes a mess.

It seems like the hot deals have been lame for months now, culminating in the travesty of them being broken and not able to be cashed in back in September.  I gave up on hot deals and cashed my reward points for $50 in Amazon GC and put it toward a high refresh monitor for my pc.

I'm used to Discord from my WoW raiding days, it was the Ventrilo replacement.

I got my 3 months Gamepass code from the Nitro. While you're there don't forget to turn off EA Access if you claimed the month.

So you can also get 3 months GP if you do Discord Nitro? Is that for new users only?

Edit: just did it and it works for existing members. Converts to two months of Ultimate. Now good through 6/22!! Thanks for mentioning that. Never knew you could get it.
