Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.

Happy new year everyone!
I know we have some great TV experts around here, so I figured I’d ask for help - haven’t gotten the chance to google yet and I’m still at work so I don’t have the model number and such. Anyway:
We have a Samsung smart tv hooked up to my fiancé’s Xbox, and for a while we had the feature on the Xbox that turns the tv on when you turn the system on. I ended up turning that feature off, but we’re still having a problem where every time she turns her tv on, if it is on the Xbox “channel”, it’ll start up here system automatically, and it’ll also turn mine on, which is in the same room but hooked to a different tv. Both systems are wired, too, so I don’t think it’s a WiFi thing but obviously all on the same network. It gets frustrating and has even happened when my system was already on, meaning mine got shut off because it sent a power signal to both Xboxes.
Any suggestions on how to disable the auto turn on feature completely? Have thought maybe a factory reset on her tv might work but that’s kind of a pain plus I’d have to re sign-in to all the streaming apps and whatnot. If that’s what I have to do, though, I guess I’ll do it. Thanks in advance for any advice peeps.

I've been playing Control and enjoying it though I don't know much of what's going on so far.  One thing I will say though - if you like Control's story/environment, I highly recommend checking out the very cool Scifi miniseries "The Lost Room".  The game feels like it could have been partially inspired by that show, though I don't know if anyone at Remedy has acknowledged any connection.

Achievement tracking is finally working again on the Rewards app, right after the Gears card expired. Oh well.

Speaking of tracking, in the absence of the year-end summary Xbox usually does in December, TrueAchievements stat tracking is pretty good.  For all of 2019, it says I had 994 Achievements in 48 games, for a total of 25,410 Gamerscore. I feel judged.

Starting the year with 10,652 MS Rewards points, will report back in November with the total I can get off the next Xbox

Judged because you gamed too much or too little? According to TA, I popped 477 achievements worth 13,824 GS across 52 games in 2019. Only 3 completions. Tacoma (started and finished August 18), ACA NeoGeo Robo Army (started and finished July 21) and Forza Horizon (2 achievements, one of which required starting a new save to import FM4 loyalty cars, so I held off until I could find a TA session for the Rally MP one).

That Gears 5 quest was completed for me the first time I checked it. I had popped a couple on Dec 22, then none until Dec 28. Don't remember when it was posted here, maybe it was active on the 22nd.

Lost my XBL Rewards weekly streak. Got home from work too late Mon night / Tue morning. Had forgotten to open the app after popping some achievements over the weekend.

Made my first gaming purchases of the new year, but not on Xbox. Re-upped with Pokemon Bank (had expired a couple months back), and also bought Cuphead on the Switch. Would've bought Ori there, too, since I see it has XBL achievements, but it's not currently on sale. Started going over the XBL deals before they expire tomorrow (not counting the ones that already did, like Control and River City Girls).

If anyone wants an old school Godzilla kick today - https://www.comettv.com/watch-live/

According to my account, I made almost 40,000 in December alone. So, if you can keep up that pace, you should have quite a lot of the price off, as 92,000 will get you a $100 Microsoft gift card.

I'm expecting a pretty big chunk, because I paid like $20 out of pocket this year to pick up Sekiro, Control, Remnant from the Ashes, RE2make and Jedi Fallen Order just using credit from MS Rewards. Best and worst thing I've ever pre-ordered was the Halo Wars 2 $99 edition that was just a bunch of multi player junk to push me into the 5 Star Rewards status just before they ended the program, but keep rolling over the benefits every 6 months since then.

Oh yeah and wiped out my account in this last sale for MK11, so the 10k is just since then

105,219 points to start the year for me since the hot deals went to shit the last few months

That's very strange that it turns on the second one. See if CEC is turned on for the TV, turn that off. I think there's setting in the Xbox about remote accessibility, maybe?

New Year's celebration with my wife tonight, we're going to be on TV. Technically. In Jax for AEW Dynamite, pretty good card announced so I have high hopes minus being cold since Jags stadium is right on the river.

Welcome to Jax! Try out Intuition Ale Works or Bold City for good local beer, if that’s your thing 👍🏼 Close to the stadium as well.

I didn't think that XBox supports CEC?

I can turn on my TV and switch to the PS4 input from the DS4. Can't do that from my XBox. The XBox has some sort of IR blaster but I have not really looked in to it.

Thanks for the suggestion. It seems that I had already turned off the CEC setting, so that wasn’t it. I played around online a bit and came across this article: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-stop-samsung-smart-tvs-turning-your-xbox-one

Apparently it’s just a thing that when it recognizes your devices, it connects them to the remote, so now instead of the “Xbox One” on the menu of the TV, it just shows “HDMI 1” and we’ll have to live with that. No clue why it was turning both systems on, but this seems to have fixed it.

Aha! Yes, there's a setup procedure to train the remote and it will identify the Xbox. Clear the setting and when it as if you want to setup the device to the remote back out. I needed to do it so I could turn off the TV without turning the Xbox on when I was watching another input. Or put electrical tape over the ir spot on the other box.

Went to Intuition back in July for the show then. Good beer, food was ok. Went to Bearded Pig tonight.

Started playing Apex Legends again for the winter event. The event is okay, nothing amazing. I like the changes to the battlepass, I stopped playing when I realized that I'd never be able to get half way through the battlepass with the amount of work it took. Still don't think I'll play that much but it's taking at least half the amount of time to level up it seems. Maybe the way overwatch does event skins spoils me too much but having them locked behind a paywall that is 7x the price of non event lootcrates is a major turn off. They do allow you to get a couple weapon skins and banners and stuff through challenges but I like the way it's done in overwatch way more.

Started playing wolfenstein youngblood and damn is that game fucking repetitive also what's up with nazis scaling to your level?I just beat the first tower boss and I had a really hard time against him that I barely beat him with 10< hp left while my teammate was down on normal difficulty.

It doesn't get better.

I’m not a big fan of the winter event, I got to lvl 99 on season 1, level 110 on seasons 2 and 3, I’ve only spent 400 hours on it, lol. I haven’t played it since I hit 110 on Season 3 though. I’m feeling less compelled to play it. I’ve been getting into Pokémon and I’m refinishing some furniture in my garage. I keep thinking about starting a new campaign on something but I just haven’t been able to get the mood to start. I’m watching The Witcher on Netflix instead. My kids have been playing Lego DC Villains so they are getting into a campaign.

So quick question, if I somehow do miraculously have time to play Witcher 3 this year, how necessary is it to have gone through Witcher 2 prior? I Tried playing Witcher 2, but I was just overwhelmed by the tutorial alone of me laying traps and figuring shit out that I had that moment where time stopped in my head and thought life is too short to try and understand all this.

It's not required at all, I think they have a bunch of flashback stuff to Witcher 1 which is basically unplayable from a game play perspective.... I've fired it up a few times. Witcher 2 more nods to that, but they totally will fill you in on the story

Just play WItcher 3 on the setting where you don't have to put oils on your swords each fight and then remember which one kills monsters and which one kills humanoids.... hahahah you'll be good to go

Just finished my first game of 2020, Life is Strange 2. Free on Game Pass was the right price. While not a terrible game or anything, I just wasn't that interested in Sean and Daniel and many parts of the game were flat out dull. I still think a Life is Strange sequel that had nothing to do with Max, Chloe, Rachel, or Arcadia Bay was just a dumb idea.

If the battlepass continues to level this fast I'll probably stick with it and maybe pick up the paid version. I fell off at the start of season one because I hit the wall of one loot box like every 10 levels and the battlepass was going to take me too long since I usually play with random people so the xp bonus wouldn't apply. Correct me if I'm wrong but other than the 5 or so challenge skins the rest of the winter skins are locked behind a roughly $140 paywall, right?

Ha. I felt the exact same way about The Witcher 2. I was like "Wtf is this shit? I have to oil my sword? These traps are bullshit. This is way too convoluted for me."

I still haven't brought myself to try 3.

I'm at the break down point on Apex. Same point as you where I maxed 2 out of 3 seasons and sunk countless hours in Apex. I feel like they are going to do the same thing next season cosmetically so will probably be the last battle pass I get. Apex is still the best br game for me but even with a solid team mate we always get put with what seems like one bad random 90% of the time and we don't win any matches. I had a streak of 5 wins in 10 matches and seems like I haven't won in 40 games now. I hope they add BR to Modern Warfare soon because it's the only mp I like right now. Rocket League and Titanfall 1 were my joints for awhile but I got burnt out on those eventually. Maybe I'll actually clear some backlog in 2020 (I only plan on buying Cyberpunk till the next system is out) but I got a ton of switch games now to.

Finished Jedi Fallen Order. It's very good. I usually play on something harder than Normal in most games, but one of the last bosses was kicking my ass and it stopped being fun. Realized there aren't any difficulty-related achievements so I turned it back to Normal and finished it up.

The amount of time and attention that went into this game is really evident, Respawn really put their heart into this game. As much as I want a sequel to Titanfall 2, as long as they get to continue making quality SP games, I'm happy.

Judged because you gamed too much or too little?
Yes.

Correct, the price they want for those skins is insane. They are only for the whales. I would probably be willing to spend $1.99 on a skin I really liked, but $18 for a skin is way way way to rich for my blood. I think the state would revoke my cpa license if they found out I spent $18 on an in game skin, so I haven’t. I’ve only collected the battle pass items and free event items.

As someone mentioned, it's not really necessary. Think of the tutorial as just letting you know all your possible options. You don't have to use them all. In all games, I never bother with crafting, for example, unless it's mission related. Hunting down herbs in random locations is not fun for me. When playing The Witcher games, I go through each encounter as I want. Only if I'm failing with a specific monster/boss, will I then consider those other options. Otherwise I don't even bother. Definitely don't let those additional features deter you from a great game.

2019:

2 games completed (Thomas Was Alone and Hellblade) but I also left Creature in the Well and Guacamelee 2 at 1-easy-achievement-left status in case I needed them for the 12 Days of Xmas. Didn't end up using those and didn't mop them up yet, so they'll end up getting lumped in with 2020's count.

Speaking of: Creature in the Well was pretty fun. 8-ish hours for a 100% completion. There were some rooms that were a pain, and the music alternated between "perfect atmospheric" and "repetitive"... but the blend of Pinball+Dungeon Crawler worked nicely overall. Great Game Pass addition as it was fun to play through, but I don't know if I'll go back to it.

I can't figure out how to see completions, but I know I didn't hit my goal of 150.
I got my count from the header on the TA Yearly Summary email, otherwise you'd have to count yourself on the Platform Summary widget on your TA profile page.

Completing every punch card, doing everything in the Bing and Game Pass apps, spending money on games and movies. And, I'm a level 2 member with a gold account, which gives you point bonuses on buying things.
Thanks, I only have like 16k since early December but I haven't bought a ton and don't always do all of the searches

Playing Titanfall 2 and Yakuza 0 and this year is off to a great start when in Titanfall 2 I was able to grab the pilot from a titan and crush them in my hand while in Yakuza, I defeated a random guy in the streets by pummeling him with a salt shaker and pouring salt into his wounds until he passed out.

The multiplayer was stripped out of it. if you played the 360 version not much different but 18.00 for it is pretty decent. Play it beat it trade it

Looks like people are dropping stats so:

Second best year ever.
