Through the console, after first selecting to download a GoD you are greeted by a familiar gray confirmation screen that pops up displaying the size of the download as well as confirming the price. At the bottom of this gray pop-up is the instruction to press the "X button" in order to change the payment type to MSP. Pictured below with an arrow:

Defense Grid is really good. There are more challenging TD games on XBLA (Sanctum 2 and Crystal Defenders), but it still can be pretty tough getting gold on some of the missions. Hope the DLC is free too.

Defense Grid is a great tower defense game, if you don't have it (or even if you do.) Don't pass up this opportunity to get it for free if you don't have it already.

Glad to hear that Defense Grid is good because I have to admit when I saw that post I couldn't have been more underwhelmed. I too thought it would kick off with Halo or AC. Oh well.

Definitely and probably.
Yeah, I will be disappointed if Halo 3 and AC 2 are the best we get.

Not that I'm complaining about getting free games, but if you're trying to compete with PS+ and actually show XBL buyers that your service is actually worth paying for, that won't exactly blow anyone away.

If Arcade games keep coming, I will be happy. Older AAA titles most people would have finished are fine, but personally, arcade games keep me much happier.

Got Defense Grid free on Steam, I guess getting it for free on 360 is just par for the course. Not the most exciting pick I agree, but at least it is a less common game and genre (for the console). Still hoping we get something a little more recent though, these current picks are some of the oldest they could have selected.

But hey, free games = never a bad thing :D

Pardon my ignorance but for these free games on the Xbox One countdown will they be available for the duration of the time?
Like will Fable 3 not be free anymore after midnight tonight or can I still download it say Tuesday?
Each game will only be free for two weeks, afterwards the next game on the list will be free and so on. Tonight at midnight (maybe a little later depending on what time zone you live in) is the cut off for Fable 3, after that it will go back to full price. As long as you at least go through the purchase menu and start the download, you can cancel it and redownload it later because it will still be tied to your account.

You don't even have to start and cancel the download. Just buy it on xbox.com and remove it from your queue (or don't). It's worth mentioning because people travel during the summer and spend more time outside of their homes which means they may not always have console access.

Defense Grid is a good tower defense and fun for the first half of the game but I thought it got too hard and gave up on it halfway through.  Don't buy the add-on content until you actually finish the game.

This situation where they're "kicking off" the program by "announcing two games" has lawyer speak written all over it and they did nothing to correct everyone's assumption that those games (Halo 3 and AC2) were first.  I wish I had an Xbox One pre-order so that I could cancel it.  One thing's for sure, every fucking thing they do just makes me want to continue to buy their products even less.

On another note I was just able to switch my chinese account to hungary since 3 months have passed and able to get my digital AC3 copy (couldn't connect to live the whole time when it was chinese) I guess I will need some points, now the GonD sale is coming...

It's a decent game but for gawds sake MS are tighter than a ducks ass (water tight).

A free XBLA game which has been $5 multiple times, throw us a fricking bone here!!

Well that sucks, sure it's a free game and I'll play it and all but wow they could have given us something a little more than that game. Everyone was so excited to get halo 3 or AC2 and they just bust their balls with this.

I just spent $50 with Newegg to buy a 12 month XBL subscription in hopes of getting some good games for free for the next few months....then they give us an Arcade game....and not a popular/great one at that.  What gives?

At least it was $40/$10.  It came with 800 MSP included.  so I really only paid $40 for the subscription but I want to get my $40 out of it.

They really should have kicked this off with a big game like Halo 3 (although fable 3 was the first one). The way they had made this thing sound was that we'd get Halo 3 or AC2 for this month and it got a lot of people excited that they were gonna finally do something similar to PS+. Makes me wonder with them showing off AC2 and Halo 3 as games coming in the program at some point is if these are the only 2 real big blockbuster games that are going to be in this program.

Snce we're talking about MS it would be likely that these 2(3) games are the "stars" of this whole promotion....anyway I can't say anything bad about Defense Grid itself, it IS a good tower defense game...but quite an old one....(and if you ever want to "finish" it, you will have to buy the dlc...but the monster dlc will cause bugs & glitches so yeah)

Halo 3 and Assassins Creed 2 are still coming out. My guess is the original Halo and Assassins Creed 1 will be the other GoD titles (troloololol!)

Anyways, pretty happy we get this one, mainly because I don't own it yet! (WIN!)

Defense Grid: The Awakening will be free tomorrow

Nice to know that I was right when posting here and on other sites that AC2 and Halo 3 were NEVER confirmed to be the first 2 titles coming to the "Games with Gold" program.

I'm not sure how so many people (specifically pretty much all the video game media sites) got confused by this and I'm not sure why MS didn't correct this bad assumption earlier.

That's a good point.  Straightening out a few games in their Games for Gold promo was probably on the very bottom of their list of PR priorities recently.

I'm actually ok with this choice.  I have no interest in the assassin's creed series and I already own halo 3.  I was happy with Fable 3 since I passed on it so many times but still wanted to play it.  Looking forward to the big sale so I can max out my harddrive.  Sigh...the thought of having to spend money on memory sticks to save free games on them kinda defeats the purpose.

Well, I don't own Defense Grid. So I can't really complain since I'll download it, but I have no problems with Arcade games being on here, just...well, would it goddamn kill them to put out something that's been out in the past year or two?

Well that's a kick in the nards. Wasn't expecting a crappy XBLA arcade game to be included. At least I don't have it so I will take a look at the demo before renewing my Gold account. Maybe we get games of each genre. So far we got an RPG and Tower Defense, with FPS and Action-Adventure coming up. I have to agree with the others who said that maybe Halo 3 and Ass Creed 2 will be the best we get, I mean you don't mention the worst games you will offer, you get the hype machine up by mentioning the best.

edit: the game is fun.. :ziplip:....still.... wasn't expecting an XBLA game.

I imagine it has something to do with them already being in the middle of the worst PR fiasco the industry has ever seen.
Now-now. The PSN hacking was more atrocious than some misguidance on a new product.

__

PS+ had a slow start as well, so let's hope that they start picking up. I already own all three of the so-far confirmed free games. But whatever!

Defense Grid is one of my favorite XBLA games. It's old, yeah, but still one of the best tower-defense games on Xbox.

the worst part of this was that defense grid steam codes were being given away not that long ago so a metric ton of people have it for free there already

The people flipping out over this make me want to kick them out of the gaming community.  Like a 3 year old throwing a temper tantrum in the middle of Wal-Mart because mommy didn't buy him a king size Snickers for his 150 pound gut.

That was not a PR issue. That was a hack which is actually pretty common. The PR part comes in with how Sony handled the hack etc. which most people didn't complain about besides the fact that news broke before Sony made an official response. But in the new social media world that happens all the time. Microsoft alienated and at times, outright insulted their customers' concerns.

The wording they used during the press conference was pretty poor and easily confusing if you didn't obsess about how it was said when reporting on it.

"To kickoff that program, I'd like to share just two of the titles we're going to offer over the next few months: Assassin's Creed II and Halo 3."

Who talks about kicking off the program by announcing two titles that are not kicking off the program? Imagine if Sony announced upcoming PS+ titles that weren't actually going to be out for another three months instead of within the next month.

I mean, compared to PS+ which gave us stuff like SR:TT, DE:Human Revolution, Uncharted 3, X-Com, and LBP Karting (and that was just this month) I'm underwhelmed to see Defense Grid. I don't own it, but after having such a horrible PR fiasco and leaving a bitter taste in a lot of their fans' mouths (myself included, at least they fixed the DRM. I won't buy the X1 though) you'd think they might give away something a little better. At least a GoD title.

I will set it to download from my browser, but I haven't even turned my 360 on in over 3 weeks. Used to be a daily thing, but meh...kinda over Microsoft at the time being.

Theyre free. Can you guys please shut up? A month ago all we got were sponsored games for free.
WHAT?!?! I CAN'T HEAR YOU! YOU'RE BEING DROWNED OUT BY COMPLAINTS OVER MICROSOFT ANNOUNCING WE'LL BE GETTING TWO GAMES FOR FREE, BUT IT TURNS OUT THEY'RE TAKING THEIR SWEET TIME AND INSTEAD GIVING US A FREE GAME THAT HAS BEEN ON SALE NUMEROUS TIMES FOR $5 SO MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WHO WANTED IT HAVE IT!

I just realised MS offers a free game, which has quite a lot of dlc. Nice catch. :p Still not excited to renew my subscription.
This is what most are forgetting with Halo 3. I do find it a bit weird that they announced the first confirmed ones as 5-6 year old games. (H3/AC2)

Yeah, but they when this promotion is only expected to last a few months anyway, a "slow start" is far less acceptable. Also, since Halo 3 and AC2 are not the first games M$ must consider them the 'heavy hitters' of this program which is sad to say the least.

Now this is a valid complaint and I whole-heartedly agree. I just have my fingers crossed that the positive reaction from this will spark them to continue. It happened with deals of the week.

So now I wonder how long will it last before 360 Deals of the Week are over? Since the X1 basically has no BC with the 360 in anyway, how long do you think before they do way with it and hope people just focus on the X1 only? I Mean I would hope they do it when the X1 has a large library of games, but considering things like Sales + Specials app and other things about the 360 were taken with little to no warning (1 vs. 100 immediately springs to mind) I already figure that's a bit of a pipe dream.
