This thread will maintain a list of all current and upcoming sales and markdowns on the Xbox Live Marketplace / Xbox Games Store for the USA.  YMMV in other regions.  If non-US sales are listed, they will be marked with their applicable region(s).

Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.  This requires being a paid subscriber or within a console-activated "1 month complimentary Gold trial" account.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.
  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Okay, I broke down and bought Far Cry: Blood Dragon. It was the price of a Whopper, man! How could I resist? First-person shooters aren't my favorite games, but I can squeeze some entertainment out of them if they're well designed and I'm persistent. Halo 3 was fun enough in the normal difficulty setting (but I could have done without that Warthog segment at the end! Geez!).

I'm hoping like crazy that the next sale, or at least an upcoming one, will offer DLC for Street Fighter X Tekken at a reduced price. I'm one of those suckers who would pay for on-disc content, albeit grudgingly, but I will NOT pay as much for that content as I did the game. Come on, twenty dollars? That's just rubbish.

I grabbed Bioshock 2 and Minerva's Den. I loved the first one. I'm hoping for a sale on Alan Wake DLC......I just finished the first one and loved it.

No tax on cards or purchases here in PA, which is rather shocking, TBH.

And yeah, Duke sucked.  The crowning achievement was acquired at the very beginning of the game, in the bathroom.

No tax on cards, but tax on purchases. Kind of sucks, because it eats into my credit, and leaves odd amounts left over, just like the points did. I think it's Microsoft trying to push us in to putting credit cards on our accounts. After hearing about hacks and FIFA spending sprees, I'm not likely to do that any time soon.

lol damn I think that article was the feel good story of the year. I wish it would be legal here too so I could stop telling me friends that we shouldn't smoke it because it's illegal.
It's not a natural feel good story of the year, but a controlled substance feel good story of the year.

Holding out for a DOTW there?
I Don't need any kinda plant for an excuse to go to KFC.

It's Microsoft responding to all the people who complained about points. Once you use cash your state tax laws kick in. Do you think they actually want to track every state's tax rates? That is why they used points to begin with.

I used the last of my converted funds about $85 ago, and I still haven't been charged tax on marketplace purchases. I once saw someone say if you don't make a purchase with a credit card and if you never let your balance hit zero you'll continue to make tax free purchases. Both are true for me.

Not letting your balance hit zero kind of seems like a needless question. The odds of you hitting zero with a purchase are slim. Chances are you'd hit zero if you make a split payment between your balance and a credit card; which would use up all your balance.

So an important question for those who are charged tax is since the switch to real currency have you bought anything from the marketplace using a credit card? This might be going a bit far, but since I have never done this it might be worth asking: have you ever made a credit card purchase with your gamertag's account (marketplace, microsoftonline.com, or whatever else might use microsoft accounts)?

I have used a card before

According to Microsoft's FAQ

Will I be taxed on the content that I buy in Xbox stores?

We will not apply taxes when you purchase content using currency that we add to your account at the time of the transition. However, when you use currency that you add to your account after the transition (including from Xbox gift cards), all appropriate taxes will be applied to those purchases.

http://support.xbox.com/en-US/billing/microsoft-points/microsoft-points-retire-faq

Like most of Microsoft's policies even this isn't clear, because others have said they used up most of their old points and added new ones to not be taxed. they also said the old points would be used first, but my newly added points were used first and taxed before my old points.

Which game is hated more: Duke Nukem Forever or Amy?
Amy. Duke Nukem in the very least you can give the excuse of it's a product of it's time. Both in character, surroundings and gameplay. Amy on the otherhand was just bad gameplay choices stacked on top of more dumb choices, add to it stupid glitches and ugly designs and the choice feels obvious.

which (or all?) of the Bioshock Infinite DLC should I get?
Unless you REALLY got to have it now, you can wait. 2K stuff goes on sale the most amongst everything XBL Marketplace related and I'm sure the season pass will eventually get marked down to make the easier choice. Plus even as is now the price is ridiculous for the content when you can get season pass for $20 compared to each piece for probably around...$35 or so total?

which (or all?) of the Bioshock Infinite DLC should I get?
As a HUGE Bioshock fan I can say with a confidence the only things "worth" anything are the Burial at Sea DLC Episodes. That said, only 1 is available, and it's true that if they drop Episode 2 at the same price (not unlikely but also not set in stone) You'll be better off grabbing the $20 Season Pass, which get's you all of it. If you CAN'T WAIT, Grab Burial at Sea Episode 1, hell, if you need a real push here is my own personal review of it ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6odEiBQaAY )

If however, you aren't dying for more after finishing Infinite, it's easily something you can wait on.

Not sure if I wanna invest in XCOM: Enemy Within. Is it worth getting? Or should I start with XCOM: Enemy Unknown?
Grab Enemy Within if anything, as if has all the Enemy Unknown content with the added bits. It's the "FULL PACKAGE" and that added content is ONLY available there, so if you grab EU, you miss out on the extra stuff entirely.

That said, EU alone is a GREAT game, but the added content (namely choices that benefit/hinder you) is really cool, and worth getting over the standalone EU if you believe you may like it.

Can you buy something with 1/2 XBox balance and 1/2 other?

I have an odd amount of credit on my account that can't really buy anything on its own, but I also don't wanna leave it there..

Was thinking about Far Cry 3 but I checked the blockbuster closing store thread and used games are 80% off now. I saw FC3 for $14.99 used at my store. Might be worth checking out.

Is this on online, Xbox 360, Xbox One, or any combination of these? I was trying to do this a while ago on XBone, but I couldn't figure it out on the console so i just paid in full with my card.
I know it works for Xbox One because I've done it. Heard it works on 360, but haven't tried it yet.

When you go to buy the game, it should ask if you would like to use your MS credit in addition to your credit card.

^This is how it works on 360. Dunno about online.

Since there's a lot of debate on whether you should get Duke Nukem or not, I'll break it down. 5$ is a fine price given the content: a fairly lenghty campaign by today's FPS standards with plenty of secrets and easter eggs, and a decent multiplayer (though laggy and might possibly be pretty much dead). At least 950G is fairly easy to obtain, the last 50G you'll likely obtain are for finishing the game on the highest difficulty, which is a bit hard at some places due to some meh design choices, but it's still easier than playing a COD on the most difficult setting.

The main dividing point of the game is that it's pretty much an old game, and that it has a lot of the shortcomings you wouldn't expect from a game actually parodizing modern FPS games. If you like old school shooters, Duke Nukem Forever does give plenty of explosive action, albeit in more linear levels than you'd expect from a classic shooter. The secrets are all there however, and so are the unique and bizarre levels. The Duke Nukem style is untouched since Duke Nukem 3D: if you find his sexist, macho attitude funny, you'll have a blast because his one-liners are often hilarious, with (as expected) tons of references and easter eggs on the likes of Halo and Serious Sam.

The reason many disliked it is because it just doesn't hold up with modern shooters. As it is currently 5$, that's a price you might definitely justify, but compared to what you get nowadays for a full price FPS, DNF can obviously be disappointing. Graphics are pretty bad, plenty of glitches (though it is patched since launch), lenghty loading times, linear levels, a gameplay that does indeed feel old, and the whole thing looks like unfinished, given its complicated development. But it's got plenty of humor and old-school Duke action, so if you're into a ride of badassery in his form, 5$ is definitely worth it for what you'll get. If you dislike (or don't care about) Duke's humour, you don't like the idea of a linear old-school shooter, or simply you're craving for a up-to-date FPS experience, DNF will disappoint you. If you can look aside all the technical and design choices for the sake of the fun of Duke's character and of blasting big ass aliens, get it. Simple as that.

Not sure if I wanna invest in XCOM: Enemy Within. Is it worth getting? Or should I start with XCOM: Enemy Unknown?
I'm in the same situation but I think I'll hold off on EW and start EU first. Hopefully, by the time I'm ready for EW, I'll find it for less than $20. I would also prefer a physical copy. My decision is largely influenced by having spent $25 on EU two BFs ago.

Cool, but for $5 you can grab Bioshock 1 or 2 right now and they are way better. Again Duke was given to me for free and I still think I over paid for it. They should pay you to play that game. If you want old school grab Doom or Doom 2 they are both still fun.

I Think that's same for everyone no matter what. Even those (like me) who don't pay tax.
I think everyone pays tax now. It was all apart of that law that passed a few months back that made all purchases online taxable.

The full price you're shown for your game online, when you purchase it, it is the price of the game with tax included.

Say BioShock 2 is $4.99. That's the price, with tax included.

Yes, and the amount will depend on your state's tax rates.

Fair enough, but they're completely different games. One's a mindless shooter (with its flaws), the other one is much more story-driven and with a more peculiar gameplay, it's not just run-and-gun. Hard to compare, and while Metacritic or anyone will show that Bioshock is probably the better deal here, DNF can be a viable option based on what you're looking for exactly.

R u sure? I just checked my emailed receipts and there are separate lines for "Total before Tax", "Tax" and "Total for this "Order." I haven't seen an amount under "Tax" and I've spent all my converted points but I do keep adding more points as I need them. Regardless, if you're correct, I'm ok with them adjusting the price to include tax and still pay $4.99 then say $5.45.

I can't wait for another two weeks when the exact same tax debate takes up another 2 or 3 pages of thread.

Nope, $4.99 does not include tax. It's $4.99 + tax that amounts to your final price.

First we need to go through people asking if the deals have gone live yet, where we are getting the deals from if Major Nelson hasn't announced them yet, and whether or not you can pay with part MS money and the rest with a credit card. As much as I miss points, at least we don't have the question about how to use points on certain purchases anymore. Did I miss any others?

There seems to be some valuable information in this current tax talk. There are a few people who, despite what the conversion FAQ says, are still not being charged tax. Saying what we have or haven't done could help others keep their purchases from being taxed. What if it is something as simple as never using a credit card to make a purchase? It would be nice to let others know to continue to only use gift cards if possible.

I'm not going to push it any further. Selfishly, it would be better if we don't figure it out. If we do the word might spread, and Microsoft will fix it.

Good points on all....It could just be there states don't enforce online sales tax though.

I'm sure this has already been pointed out, but I find it amusing that the acronym for Duke Nukem Forever is DNF, which means "Did not finish" in racing circles. That could either apply to the developers or the hapless gamers who bought it.

Tax kills it.
Not sure if XBLM joke or legit pot price criticism, or both :p I saw some chap's receipt for 3.5 grams come to 60 and change, and while that may be a shocker for some out there, that is sadly a passable price out here in our "marketplace."

For the sake of saying something somewhat relevant to the topic, let me chime in from out of nowhere that you should not pick up Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon etc. if it ever comes up for a "good" price, because the game sucks more balls than Sasha Grey in her entire career. I would rather play Gauntlet with my hands cuffed and both of my eyes scooped out. You're welcome.

I used up the last of my "converted from MSP" currency during the holiday sales and bought some stuff using money from currency cards and haven't been charged sales tax.  I made those purchases while visiting family in PA for the holidays, I haven't made any purchases since I've been back home in MD.

When making Christmas purchases on Amazon, I noticed that if I had something sent to my home address in MD, I wouldn't be charged sales tax, while things sent to my VA work address (still using my MD billing address) did get charged sales tax.  Since I've had packages taken off my doorstep in the past, the sales tax for shipping to work also covers peace of mind, so I accepted that cost.

I wonder if Microsoft is using the account's billing address or trying to use the IP address (for console purchases) to determine location.  Don't know if I'm curious enough to bring my 360 in to the office to find out.
