Well that's how you feel about it. I think a lot of people would agree that a bad ending to a game does not undo the fun you had leading up to it.
Mass Effect 3 would like a word with you.
You might have a point if IP had redeemable features other than its story, such as gameplay. But it was an adventure game with added QTEs, so that goes right out the window. All it had was its story, and stories are generally required to be coherent to be considered good. The beginning of the story, yes, was pretty good. But it was just the beginning, where not much is expected from the story, and where the player is fine with letting the mysteries pile up. But the answers are just as important as the mysteries, if not more so, so people generally look to the ending for the big reveals. A great reveal to a mystery, no matter how big or small, is awesome. A weak reveal to a mystery, however, just makes that mystery seem dumb. So when you consider just how pants-on-head retarded IP's ending was, yes, it retroactively ruins everything that made the beginning great.
I've never played Heavy Rain (don't have a PS3), so I don't know how that is. Maybe it's good, or at least written in such a way that feels like the writer didn't undergo severe cranial trauma before writing the last third of the game. But IP is a terrible game, and terrible games don't deserve your money. I mean, I know I'm probably piquing somebody's interest when I say how terrible the ending was, but really, it's not End of Eva level stuff we're talking about. It's just really dumb. Don't do it.
