Welcome to the Xbox Deals and Discussion thread.

General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Game Pass potential departure dates

Last updated - 2024-05-02
What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

If you have any questions about the list, please ask in the thread.

I know it's early but I wish they gave a bit more info on hardware. "Biggest generational leap ever" or whatever Bond said sounds to me like a confirmation of the cloud integrated console from the FTC leak.

Also sounded like if you're building a library for backwards compatibility, it's time to go fully digital with purchases.

Xbox Business Podcast Summary:
Only four 1st party games are being ported to other consoles (None are Starfield or Indiana Jones)
There's currently 34M Game Pass subs.
Xbox will continue to make hardware.
1st party titles will continue to be Day 1 in GP.
1st ABK title to hit Game Pass will be Diablo IV on 3/28 (Long wait)

Biggest disappointment was hearing Game Pass would only be available on Xbox, which isn't inherently true but is their goal currently. They honestly talked a lot of shop about how the industry didn't grow last year but I'm not hearing much that would change that. Real change would be pushing big exclusives to more storefronts but they're cautiously dipping their toes on this one.

Why would Sony and Nintendo allow Game Pass on their platforms?

It would cannibalize game sales on their platforms.

They would need to take a massive cut of Game Pass revenue for it to be worth it for them to allow Game Pass on their hardware.

Diablo IV on GamePass is good news. Hopefully, we will see more and more added this year. I have not played a Call of Duty game in years and would download them for the SP experience.

Phil did not close the door on moving bigger games to other platforms based on Tom Warren’s article. Overall, it’s whatever…
Yeah, but he made it clear there are no current plans to. And that he didn’t want to mislead PlayStation fans about that.

Everything can change but sounds like they want to keep the bigger games exclusive.

If these four games do well, there’s no reason for them to not bring other stuff. I’ll still play Game Pass while I have it, but I’d be lying if I said this whole thing didn’t have me considering just moving to PC and PS5 in the future.

Not me. I love playing first party stuff Day One and sounds like the plan right now is to keep the big ones exclusive. Not only are the games being ported smaller…they’re also over a year old. But you do you.

The huge reason is they are still wanting Xbox to be the best place to play your games. If you watched the interview, Phil specifically said that the best place to play will always be on Xbox Hardware. They are still fully invested on that experience just as much as Playstation or Nintendo. These weird mental gymnastics people have been doing the past couple weeks is so tiring. Even the announcement today, Sea of Thieves and Grounded (if those are the two titles) makes complete sense. Those are games where if the world is empty of other players, they are boring useless games. It makes the experience better for Xbox players if people on Playstation and Nintendo can help fill out the worlds (just like Fortnite, Apex and other games where you need a large player base to even make the game work). He said the other two games are smaller games that probably really need the support and funding from going onto Nintendo or Playstation to help get the name out there.

In no way did I watch that press conference and think that Xbox is trying to test the waters before they drop major titles onto other platforms that haven't been on other platforms before, for the past two weeks this has all felt like a lot of hopium from people that don't have Xbox hardware.

I would love it if I could buy one system and play Mario, God of War and Halo. That would be great! I just don't see that coming anytime soon. I am glad that both Microsoft and Sony are starting to put things on PC, that's great. Until we get that one box, I'm still stuck buying all the systems.

Also sounded like if you're building a library for backwards compatibility, it's time to go fully digital with purchases.

Sarah Bond:

‘We gonna share some exciting stuff in hardware this holiday.’
‘We are invested in our next generation roadmap.’
‘We will deliver the largest technical leap you have ever seen!’

You have to go past the video and read the interview from Tom’s article. Xbox is totally testing the waters here lol

And did you NOT read the next quote in the same article where he says “But I don’t want to create a false expectation on those other platforms that this is somehow the first four to get over the dam and then the dam’s going to open and that everything else is coming, that’s not the plan today. I also don’t want to mislead customers on those other platforms.”

Again, cherry picking quotes.

Before the chaos begins, any recommendations for a Game Pass game to play every day for a quick achievement?

I also predict there will be some older Act-Blizz games coming to GP this week
Toem and Paw Patrol: Mighty Pups Save Adventure Bay.

For Toem, if I remember correctly, there's a bunch you can right off at the beginning of the game. Just exit out after you get an achievement. Most of the ones after aren't far from each other.

For PP: You can get two for each level which aren't long or difficult. One for finishing the level and one for getting all the items in the level. I would leave a pup treat near the end and get it on my second play through to get the second achievement. You don't have to get the pup treats or shields you already got before just the ones you missed. Pause the game to see how many treats there are to collect so you don't accidentally get it all in the same play through. The extra games seem to be pretty easy, too. Just play and it pops when you're finished.

Yep and the last part “we’ll see what happens for our business” and right before what you quoted “that’s not the plan today”. So what happens if they are successful and plans tomorrow change from plans today? I guess we’ll see.

Why would Sony and Nintendo allow Game Pass on their platforms?

It would cannibalize game sales on their platforms.

They would need to take a massive cut of Game Pass revenue for it to be worth it for them to allow Game Pass on their hardware.
I would argue if you're already a Game Pass subscriber, those sales were lost regardless of hardware. Movies and music don't have this issue, so why does gaming need to? If Sony isn't ready for a future where their hardware doesn't matter, they're already going to lose. They're finally looking at PC as outward growth which shows they understand the problem. However, it's not always day one releases for both but that might be changing soon.

He is very clearly leaving the door open to bring other bigger titles down the line so he can reference these statements if people throw a fit. Anyone being objective can see that, the metrics they use to determine what and when we peons won't ever know of course.

Glad that they reiterated numerous times that first party games will continue to be on GamePass Day One.
That sounds like we should expect a price hike or more likely, a new tier of game pass, once games are rolling out on a regular cadence.
I suspect they didn't deny anything because even if there are no current plans to port [game], they may change their mind at any time if it seems profitable enough.
This is still true. There’s not some big brain strategy going on.

Diablo IV on GamePass is good news. Hopefully, we will see more and more added this year. I have not played a Call of Duty game in years and would download them for the SP experience.
I've never actually played a COD game, so I'd be willing to give a campaign a go. No idea which, but could probably find out from suggestion.

First of all Shinobi is a Pony. Second of all, absolutely nothing changed with the news we got today from what we already knew yesterday.

Phil said years ago when they first acquired Bethesda that games would go multiplatform on a case by case basis. I see nothing wrong with an older game going to another platform trying to get a second wind after it's hit it's ceiling to try and continue to grow it's community.

With games taking 5+ years to develop and costing hundreds of millions of dollars to make ALL companies are looking for way to increase their revenue. The CEO of Sony just announced that they will be bringing all of their games to PC. Digital libraries, backwards compatibility, Cross saves and cross progression, day and date on PC... Xbox are not just following the trend... they are setting the trend.

So you’re somewhat proving my point. Sony seems to be bringing a lot of their big, quality, and possibly date and date stuff to PC. Why are we thinking Xbox is just going to release these 4 older games on other platforms and that’s it? Seems naive to think that Xbox would go through all this PR stuff and porting costs if they didn’t have bigger future plans. Honestly, do we expect those four games to sell ton? I could see Hi-Fi Rush doing okay and that’s about it.

Either way, Gameflip will probably be the main reason for keeping me on Xbox.

The games moving over are smaller titles whose player numbers have hit close to their max on xbox. Older titles that'll get more money to the devs so they can go after more passion projects like the ones being shared. I don't think they are testing the waters for Gears or Halo to move over.

They are open to whatever makes the most money. They are not going to commit to bringing over every game because there’s enough struggle to bring games out on time and on budget with 1 to 2 platforms at release. Use the profit from initial release to fund DLC development and release on other platforms. Not profitable enough to continue development? Xbox exclusive

Because I do see more Xbox games going multiplatform in the future this goes for both Xbox and Playstation. For example putting Helldivers 2 on Xbox would make a lot of sense. I just don't see Xbox releasing their games day and date on to Playstation, I can see them doing a staggered release. We might have 1 or 2 more console generations before we go fully cloud gaming anyways.

Xbox Series X/S is selling less than the Xbox One generation. Starfield didn't push as many consoles as expected so I do believe that the bean counters got spooked. I believe that there was a tug of war between the executives and the Xbox team and releasing these four games was the compromise. Once the ABK games start hitting Game Pass, more and more casuals will start to flock to the Xbox ecosystem.

Some random thoughts on this having just watched it. Overall I'd give this a "B". It wasn't the blood bath of "everything is going multi-plat", but it didn't answer every question either.
  • I think it was smart to focus on library preservation and Windows compatibility (hopefully this means more focus on Play Anywhere). This is a big deal for me and I like that Xbox is making a commitment to it. This makes me want to continually invest/upgrade as I know my past purchases come with it (or at least a lot of them)
  • Bullet definitely dodged with Starfield and Indy staying exclusive (as others have said, this is at least a "for now" statement). Xbox can have a really strong year with the current lineup, and keeping it exclusive helps
    • The commitment to cross-saves felt out of place to me. I like that Xbox has this feature, but calling it out sounded like a capitulation that Xbox isn't a first choice and they aren't going to try and change that
  • Excited to hear about new hardware, but a little let down to not have any new announcements here. This tells us Xbox is still in it for the long haul, and even though we might be in 3rd place, we're not planning on being Sega 2.0
  • I agree with others on the 4 games candidates (Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Hi-Fu, and Pentiment sound likely). I don't disagree with Xbox on this and think this is a smart move to generate additional revenue. I just hope they are strategic with these and they open up some opportunities to gain some items that are currently exclusive to Switch/PS

You know what I would have liked to hear more about was the cross-play commitment because the one thing I can absolutely blast Game Pass for is having separate servers when it comes to multi-platform games. Darktide is an example for me where they only got parity over a year later and botched the launch, forcing me to buy a copy on Steam just to be where the majority of players were. Same goes for patches, where Palworld for a brief week was well behind Steam and only once it got millions of sales did MS jump to the rescue. Where was that question, Phil?

Biggest disappointment was hearing Game Pass would only be available on Xbox, which isn't inherently true but is their goal currently. They honestly talked a lot of shop about how the industry didn't grow last year but I'm not hearing much that would change that. Real change would be pushing big exclusives to more storefronts but they're cautiously dipping their toes on this one.
Game Pass only on Xbox… why would PlayStation and Nintendo allow it? Maybe if they got a significant enough slice of the revenue.

I would argue if you're already a Game Pass subscriber, those sales were lost regardless of hardware. Movies and music don't have this issue, so why does gaming need to? Movies and music DO have this issue in a different form, they've had to majorly adapt to streaming and overall sales numbers are way down, driving tons of backend deals to be made instead.

Music - no one buys physically except vinyl collectors, the vast majority of people don't buy digitally either. The entire business model changed in the last decade

Movies/TV - availability is a disaster. Some companies like Netflix keep their content away from physical or digital releases entirely. New physical releases that do exist have had MSRP skyrocket. Content that isn't exclusive (and even some that is), bounces around frequently between different exclusivity contracts. WB wiping content from existence.

I would love it if a game like Helldivers 2 came out on Xbox. I have some friends that only have an Xbox and don't have a gaming PC or PS5 that I know would love this game. I'm personally having a blast with it. It is such a silly, chaotic game that has its vibes down.

In even bigger and worse news today, Vudu will change its name to Fandango At Home—another unneeded name change. I never liked the name Vudu, but that new name is a lot to say. I hope with the name change they don't make any changes to the Vudu Disc to Digital program.

Mom can I order some movie tickets through Fandango? No we have Fandango at home.

Vudu wasn't a great name but I certainly got used to it long ago and this isn't better. Just as long as they keep the service running and linked to movies anywhere I guess it doesn't matter at all what it's called.

Yeah, they are not testing the water.

And what's the problem here? You're saying that as a consumer you don't want the ability to play the game you bought and play it anywhere you want? On your high-end PC, on the console in your living room, on the shitter, in the dentists office, etc... 😅

PC was and is a growing market and opens up Xbox games to billions of potential PC gamers. Playstation has started to stagnate at around 50 million consoles. It might not be as lucrative to port every Xbox game over to Playstation. Only time will tell. Also as a gamer one of the most depressing things about playing my favorite multiplayer games is seeing the player base die off over time so having more players playing can only be a good thing. Online games need a healthy player base in order to keep thriving.

Nobody could have predicted that it would take upwards of 9 years and hundreds of millions of dollars to make a big budget AAA and yet here we are. I've read interesting things about how AI could shorten some of that development time down as well as help with porting games over to other platforms.

Playstation will be bringing their big franchise games over to PC but you still need to buy extra copies of the game for every game you want to play on PS5 and PC and there's no cross save, cross progression and trophy support either. Let's hope that their PC ports turn out better than The Last of Us. :ROFLMAO:

Last I’ll say about it - Tom seems to share the opinion that this is definitely a test and not limited to those four games.

Yeah because all of these “insiders” were right with Starfield and Indy coming to PS5, no more Day One GamePass, etc. I’m done with these fools.

Plus that could just mean similar games that fit the same profile of smaller game, community led games, over a year old, etc. I mean that’s all these “tests” are going to prove anyway. But please feel free to believe everything you read on the internet.
