I actually disagree with this idea, I think the Kinect is really well done and after owning an Xbox One for a month I really enjoy it. I'm disappointed that they wouldn't hold their ground on this and I'm concerned developers might abandon support due to resources required for the additional development. I certainly understand why they are doing it, they're not competitive with the PS4, I just hope developers will continue to integrate the features into future games.
Developers were never going to go heavy on the Kinect unless it was an X1 exclusive. The PS4 has sold more globally and for most multi plat games the main console to develop for. With that in mind do you really think mutli play developers give a crap about Kinect? They didn't before and now they definitely won't. The Kinect is a great device for the user, in terms of games? Not so much.

Well...as much as I love my x1, the kinect IS a central part of why I love it. Without the kinect I can't see much of a reason in picking up one over a ps4 first...at this point anyway.
There is only one reason and has only ever been one reason, the GAMES.

For me I like Japanese games too much to ever consider only going X1. For others that don't and favor more western shooty games. X1 hands down.

So I guess this means Kinect is dead then? I didn't like it at first but it grew on me over time. Its crazy that in the end Sonys eye camera is more successful then Kinect.

Does this mean I'll be able to trade my x1 in and not have to include Kinnect? If so how much do you think GS trade in value will drop compared to ps4.

Glad, I didn't pick one up. Although, now that Kinect is sold separately it seems likely you'll be able to trade in your kinect.

I think it just more popular cause it get more attention especially in the news cause of the porn and playroom lol

I disagree, my wife and I both love the Kinect for the control it has on our AV equipment. I've spent a ton of money on AV gear and I don't like having to coach my significant other on using it every time she wants to do something. Being able to say Xbox On and have everything work is an outstanding feature, it may not be perfect but it's very compelling. I use the Kinect right now in Dead Rising 3 and really like it also, Ryse had good use of it also. Just having our friends and family coming over and seeing/being able to command our system has made them want the system.

Ultimately no one should turn this into a pissing match because what's done is done.

Pro: Microsoft is listening to consumers wants and understands they need to remain competitive.

Con: Microsoft may have just convinced future developers Kinect is an afterthought, if it wasn't already considered that.

Additional Pro: random promo for $350 XB1? Score.

I don't see why you couldn't get the One games. MS doesn't really track which system you have, a la Sony, as far as I know.
That's actually another change Games for Gold is going through. Starting next month the free games will be attached to the account and the console. If your Gold runs out or you get a new console, bye bye free games.

This the kinect-less sku. Not really a price drop perse since they value the kinect at $100. The $450 titanfall bundle temp price drop was the better deal... So mehh!

ive never seen so much backtracking like this before in such a short time lmao. awsome job by sony and gamers everywhere to force microsofts hand :D
It's the new Microsoft strategy. Look at what they've done with Windows 8, it's been the same thing...

I'm surprised there's so much excitement about this, seems like a poor deal compared to the $450 Titanfall deal. I suppose by Black Friday there's bound to be a bundle under $399.99 with a couple games include or something, but this on its own doesn't seem like much of a deal.

Finally. This is more my price range. Now I gotta think. Buy it now, wait for a bundle, or wait for Black Friday? My 360 backlog is still tremendous...

It's basically a neutered console without the Kinect. Is saving 100 bucks really worth it when you don't get the full experience?
It's totally worth it since the Kinect Experience means nothing to me. Why would I want to waste $100 for a stupid thing I'd never take out of the box?

Backlog and wisdom says Black Friday. I honestly think MS shot themselves in the foot with this gwg. A lot of friends and I are holding off going next gen because of all these free games adding to our backlog. I'm booked solid til Destiny hits, and that's not including the new gwg.

How is the weaker Xbone the same price as the PS4? I think a $349.99 price point would have hit the spot for me.

they have been reacting to sonys moves non stop for a year now. this shows that kinect was just a gimmick and always will be
Exactly, and I don't see a Kinectless SKU helping sales all that much. They failed with the Titanfall bundle at $449.99 which was a much better buy.

Hopefully they add an auto sign in feature then. Because you can't without the Kinect right now. Never understood that.

Nice. Hope Sony offers a price drop on PS4 but unlikely since it's doing good. A bundle is more likely.
I think a limited time $399.99 Second Son bundle would be a good counter move for Sony if they want to try and stick it to MS. But like you said, they are selling so well they really dont have to do anything at this point.

agreed that is the better deal as you acually save 110$. microsoft is onoyndoing this cause the share holders said to. sony got arrogant with the ps3 at the start and now microsoft did the same thing but worse

Well judging by a few of the posts in here, today I learned that there are in fact people that *like* the Kinect for whatever reason I can't even begin to imagine. Now with the Wii, Move (lol), and Kinect dead, I'm glad motion controls are finally about to disappear for a long while.

If a new Gears comes out that's more in line with Gears 3 as opposed to Judgement and I can score an Xbone for less than $300 on AWD like the PS4's that pop up there, then I'll probably take the dive and buy one.

You're right. MS will have to make some significant changes to the UI.

Also, a lot of the comments on here about Kinect being useless appear to be from folks who don't own an X1. Anyone who currently owns one will tell you that navigating the UI without the Kinect is a pain in the ass.

That would be great. I'm waiting for a good deal to pull the trigger on a PS4.

I dont know about this one. I think most the people talking about hating the kinect own one. I own a X1 since launch and i hate my kinect. I never use it and i even unhooked it after the first few weeks.

The UI blows compared to the 360 but i am still able to use it just fine. The kinect really doesn't improve the UI at all. Just shortcuts things.

I was thinking this exact same thing. And I consider myself an Xbox fanboy, though I also own a PS3 and PS4.

Its no secret that the PS4 is more powerful than the Xbox One. A few months ago the rumor was Microsoft is freeing up resources on the overall console by scaling back the resources needed for Kinect - this was an attempt to level the playing field with the PS4.

But with today's news fracturing the Kinect install base, developers can feel free to continue ignoring it (as they've done with the 360), rather than actually trying to integrate it in interesting ways into gameplay.

This was the decision Microsoft had to make to compete with Sony; I get that. But the far-flung dream of what Kinect might become some day has died this morning. What a waste of four years of everyone's time.

Why do you think that the Kinect only does motion?

Agree to disagree. IMO the UI is awful without the Kinect. Not saying the Kinect is amazing but it certainly makes it easier to navigate your way around without having to go through 5 menus/tabs to do so.

To be fair, I bought mine at launch and hated using the Kinect. It's ridiculously bulky too but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt with stuff like Illumiroom on the horizon.

Something I really dislike about Microsoft lately is that rather than giving you a compelling reason to like these new changes (Start Screen, Kinect, etc.) to help with the transition, they just throw it out there. What happens then is that most of the userbase is wondering why changes were made and they just end up catering to the autistic nerds who can't adjust.

they have released that bundled over a month ago in Europe. Another region even got a customized console design for a metal gear solid bundle. There several bundles that been out for months in other region but like always the NA region gets the basics

If MS would have done all this from the start they would still be number one. I love my X1 but they really dropped the ball on a lot of things early on, its nice that they are correcting them but first impressions are huge and Sony is the darling of the industry right now. :whistle2:(

I don't understand, people always say that the Kinect is useless, that they should make a bundle without kinect, and when Microsoft does it, its bad and bla bla bla.
Because they've been quoted as saying how this was never going to be an option before. Now they're back pedaling. GAF just exploded with over 2,000 responses in just 2 hours. It's pretty amusing.

This is such a huge announcement. I wonder how much Xbones will sell now that the price is even with the PS4. The problem is that specs wise, Sony still has the better console.

Early adopters get screwed though. I would be annoyed if I had bought an Xbone already. I remember the argument was that developers would utilize the Kinect for more games going forward with the larger install base. Now the Kinect is just one step closer to becoming dead. They're going to take a huge investment loss on the Kinect now. Once this leaks out to the public, their May NPD is going to be bad. Blaster man probably has the biggest shit grin right now.

Give Microsoft credit though, they listened to the fans again (hello DRM). Phil Spencer is making the choice that should have been made a year ago. I feel like the Xbone will do much better under his leadership now. He's impressed me and it's been only a couple of months.

I'm more open to buying an Xbone sooner with this news. It's disappointing that Microsoft was so stubborn saying the Kinect was so integral that they would never sell a Kinect-less SKU. They better change their UI soon or I can see them fumbling this price drop. Now that they got their head out of their ass, I see the playing field becoming leveled. This benefits us all.

You misread me. The Kinect is a great tool in terms of using the X1 device. It's great for casual games and it's great for commercials. It's great for everything except core gaming. And at the end of the day, if you're on CAG you're all about those core games. Unfortunately for Microsoft they bet on those casuals but it didn't work for them. Also unfortunately like I said unless it was an X1 exclusive devs were never going to pour much development time for the Kinect. For a multiplatform game it doesn't make much sense. Only X1 users will have that available. Just like the touch pad on the PS4 controller.

Yeah, while $399 is a *better* price point, if you wanted an XBone (and Titanfall), the $449 price-point was really pretty good. It would need to be $399 with at least one free game at this point.

I really wish the Kinect would die already, but at least with this new SKU it means MS will *probably* add auto-login for those users without Kinect. I sold my XBone (the first console I truly disliked), and one of the small irritants was/still is no auto-login unless you had Kinect set up. And since I never wanted to take the Kinect out of the box...

true but global sales could change in a couple months due to china lifting restrictions on gaming devices. for the first time in over a decade gaming devices will be allowed and Microsoft will be the first system released there in over a year which mean most the population there will be grabbing at them. and with china having the world largest population it could be a big increase.

The Xbox One Will Be The First Mainstream Gaming Console Sold In China In 14 Years
The Xbox One is officially coming to China in September.

Re/code reported the news first.

Microsoft will officially make the announcement on its Xbox blog Tuesday evening.

This is a big deal because it will make the Xbox One the first foreign gaming console to be released in China since 2000. For the past 14 years, the country has had a ban on selling gaming consoles in the country. It was put in place to protect youth from the potentially harmful effects of video games, according to Kotaku.

China's State Council temporarily lifted the ban in January allowing foreign game consoles such as the Xbox One, Sony's PlayStation 4, and Nintendo's Wii U to be sold in the country. The only catch is that foreign companies must work with a local partner and operate from Shanghai's Free Trade Zone.

According to the release, Microsoft will bring the Xbox One consoles to China through a partnership with BesTV. The two formed a joint venture, E-Home Entertainment Development Company Ltd., back in September 2013.

Through the partnership, E-Home Entertainment will invest "in an innovation program that will enable creators and developers to build, publish and sell their games on Xbox One in China and in other markets" where the console is available.

The launch of the Xbox One in China later this year should help give a boost to Microsoft's console sales which are currently lagging behind Sony's rival PlayStation 4.

Earlier this month, Sony Corp. announced sales of the PS4 console surpassed 7 million.

Microsoft recently announced it has sold more than 5 million Xbox One units in 13 countries.

Come September, the console will be available in 42 total markets worldwide.

Microsoft CVP of devices and studios Yusuf Mehdi claims there are more than a billion gamers in China in a video that will be posted to Xbox Live's blog later this evening.

A Microsoft spokesperson refused to comment on the number of Xbox One units planned to be released in the country.

All the folks who bring this up fail to consider that the titanfall bundle would have been $350 had this sku existed. That's why people are interested in the $399 price. Not necessarily to pay $399 but the fact that any deal will have a lower baseline.

Ohhhhhhhh boy. Well, this is what everyone wanted. Yet everyone still keeps complaining. ! I don't know what Microsoft is doing. I personally wouldn't want the system without the Kinect...it was kind of built around that >_<

I don't get why people call this back-pedaling or a 180. You get a new guy in charge (Phil Spencer) who knows and loves games, you get positive changes. Of course they aren't going to continue what they had been doing when it wasn't working.

I'm a fan of Kinect (love it for recording clips and Xbox Fitness) but it's good to get a cheaper option out there.

lol Being a Punk fan myself, I'd hate to disagree with you, but this is just plain wrong (in my opinion, of course). My girlfriend and I like to lie down and tend to lose the X1 controller a lot so I love the voice commands, especially at night. To me, the Bone is simply not the same without the Kinect, but to each their own.

Regardless, it seems that this thread is filled with people that haven't even used Kinect and are bashing it. Most Xbox One owners I know or have talked to like the Kinect (I do realize there are some that don't). Overall, I think this is a step in the right direction. Some of you are still complaining about this not being a heftier price cut even though this was exactly what you were pushing for in the first place. To me, it shows that Microsoft is really paying attention and even though I'm sure it's not out of the goodness of their hearts as someone said, they are still doing it and it's benefiting consumers.

Just my two cents.

Consoles have been available in China for decades now in their "gray market". Now they're becoming fully legal. If you really think Microsoft stands to gain more from that than Sony. Idk what to tell you...

Honestly I think Microsoft need to stop so hard to with the East and double down in the West. They did the best with the 360 in Europe/NA. Looking like a repeat with the X1.

I wonder how they plan to record clips going forward without Kinect. I guess they'll use the "address/select" button since they do not have a dedicated share button like PS4.
