Xbox One - General Discussion Thread

Lol, when I upgraded my 360 to the S model I wanted to trade my old one in to Best Buy but augh. The chick who was at the Geek Squad/Customer Service area took a really long time before she came back to me and said that they could only get black and white out of my box. She was going to let me trade it in for $1. LOL, WTF!? Long story short, took it into Gamestop and got tons of credit to go along with their promo at the time and yeah it was in f'n color when the guy tested it right there on the counter. God, that still makes me laugh to this day.
Should have demanded that she give you a $1 instead for wasting your time!

Last time I traded in my PS4 they couldn't find a TV with hdmi so they just accepted my PS4 without checking anything. So YMMV? But that is a killer dealer GBAstar.
Yeah $400 for the console, sensor and extra controller is good enough---I've played DR3 with my brother already but I guess it'll be nice for him to have that and AC4 to play with until he gets something of his own.

Guy messages me back and said it's hooked up so I can test it out. He did say he's never connected it to XBL so I'd have to use my account to test that out... found that odd, especially since he has WiFi but oh well.

Once again I have to say thank you CAG, just got Zoo Tycoon (enjoyed the demo on 360 a while ago) for $25, quite like that game. I've always been a Tycoon guy, Roller Coaster being my favorite (would prob pick that up if it ever came to the One). That makes another of my Xbox One $25 game library pickup titles, other than NFS: Rivals, Battlefield 4, Ryse, & Dead Rising 3 (PvZ:GW was $30). Game on!

i don't think that says anthing on time frame of game. the game has been in in works for almost two years now i highly doudt it's this far early in dev who knows what he means by that.

The thing I am worried about as an early adopter is the possibility of a more powerful system when dropping the kinect.

Which is possible if they rework the OS to make it function better without the kinect. As from what I heard there is a decent chunk of processing power reserved for kinect.

Question is if they do this will kinect owners be able to streamline their xbox by turning kinect off or dual boot persay to a kinect less OS.

And the biggest kick in the mouth would be if small murmurings turn out to be true. That their next iteration starting with kinect less/ microphone systems will have a more powerful GPU to close the gap on PS4s. If this actually becomes truth and they don't somehow allow early adopters to get the new one for very cheap then I will probably drop the one. But I honestly don't think they would do this as their PR is already ba enough.

So apparently Wolfenstein is huge and the download-now-play-when-ready mentality of next gen isn't quite there.http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2014/05/20/the-misadventures-of-trying-to-play-wolfenstein-the-new-order-via-ps4-digital-download/
I ran into this when I played Forza Motorsport 5, won the game digitally, and I couldn't access later leagues as they weren't downloaded yet. I agree, some sort of download stats like what you can get in Steam is much needed and the DL/play now system still needs improvement. With everything going on with Net Neutrality right now, I don't see this getting better unfirtunately. Forza 5 gave me problems bit Titanfall did not. In context my only digital retail games are Forza 5 and Titanfall.

To be fair, both Microsoft and Sony really were dumb with the stock console HD sizes.  I mean, 500 gigs when you have games that range from 20 gigs - 60 gigs each for mandatory installs?  And that's not including things like arcade games?  Especially considering they both offer free games!  Just saying, who doesn't download *FREE* games, even if you don't plan on playing them?  I definitely download them as a "just in case I change my mind" mentality.

It still irks me that you can't change out the Xbox One HD and replace it easily with a non-Microsoft branded HD.  I'd love to toss a SSD into one and just melt away into oblivion of joy.

Maybe we need to push for Microsoft to stop being dumb on things like that.  I mean, requiring proprietary headset adapters?  Make a controller with it built in!  I'll pay the difference if it means I don't have to fumble anymore!

That would be nice but at least we know external HDD support is coming, most likely will be announced at E3.

If any company had to do things to up power and change os to do it I think I trust ms over anyone doing that. Ms is a software company at heart so I'm sure they can get it to work with kinect or with out.

Games would have to be able to run equally on all consoles I'd think. If they allow that to happen, developers who want to use the extra power would probably have to be allowed to make their game disable Kinect when it boots up so that the same power is there for users who have it hooked up.

The 500 GB hard drive space doesn't bother me as I just delete games when I'm done with them. The saves are separate and backed up in the cloud so I can always just redownload/reinstall if I get an itch to go back to the game. Which is rare as I seldom replay anything.

Sadly I could see it come to "well both the old model and new model run the game at 720p at 30 fps so they are equal" and not account for other things like distance pop in, texture loading, shadowing, AA or even component failure etc.

Like most people know that having a game run on Xbox One at 720p at 30fps next to the same game running 720p at 30fps on a PS4 will not look the same/play the same. Ie the One can be running 90% and hence cause heating issues, texture rendering errors etc. while the PS4 is only running at 75% and has less issues whether they show in actual gameplay footage or not.

I just can't see that happening. Most games don't use Kinect anyway, so if they let them use the extra power they'll just let the software block Kinect when the game starts so all consoles have access to the power.

Depends on how data is processed from kinect and how software coding has it set up. Whether video and audio are interlaced or are separate in the OS. If they are intertwined in the current OS then it would take a complete Kinect interpreting side overhaul to the OS to be able to split audio and video feed/interpretation.

Yes in the grand scheme of things not the hardest thing, but when you built an OS to interpret data in a certain way and then change that way to a different one, there are then millions of small pieces that need to be changed. Meaning semi easy but VERY time consuming. And as always time equals money.

Granted if they still use a microphone for voice commands on kinect less xbox then part of this coding will take place regardless.

Again this is hypothetical as I don't know how they coded everything.

It must already be split since the X1 works perfectly fine if you leave the Kinect unplugged. They already had to change that when they dropped the requirement of Kinect being plugged in for it to work.

No reason they can't allow games to make the system think the Kinect is unplugged so it can use the extra power if they end up going that route.

Yeah, nothing other than completely breaking the instant access enabled by voice commands such as Dr recording or switching to another app. Yeah let's just let devs neuter the system for a minute amount of performance. Not to mention the user experience headaches. "how come my kinect works fine when I'm playing Titanfall, but when I play Assassin's Creed 7 it stops working?"
Look at it this way, the original 360 had memory cards. The later models dropped support for the memory units. Every iteration of the OS going forward had to be able to handle memory units whether the model allowed for them or not.

Console seems like it's really improved since that last update. My Kinect is reading voice commands a lot easier and faster, and the Kinect sign-in is nearly instant now.

I don't know if they did anything other then "General performance updates" but something definitely worked.

Always seems like they're tweaking it. Good thing about being in the beta program and having auto download updates on, lol.

I said voice and video split, not if the kinect can be turned off. You forget a large portion of the OS is run on voice commands. From rumors it sounds like M$ wants to keep voice commands as it IS a really cool feature and selling point. Meaning they would probably keep a "record that" feature. Which means...

That once again we come to a system that has a kinect needing to split the voice and video. Since video processing is a much larger chunk of the processing power needed, then a system with a Kinect needs to be able to only use the mic portion of the kinect and disable the video feed completely to be comprable to a kinect less xbox one that doesn't have CPU cycles dedicated to the video processing.

Hence why I said it would be a complete revamp of the kinect portion of the OS if the video and audio feeds are intertwined at all.

And yes they COULD add an option to completely disable dedicated CPU cycles to the voice and video processing, because even with the kinect off right now CPU cycles are dedicated to it. But, again, it depends on how imbedded kinect is in the OS as supposedly M$ built it around it. Although this option I could see be a viable middle ground or bandaid solution for a while. Although with this option early adopters would still be screwed as a kinect less system will probably still have an active mic and a kinect Xbox One would have the kinect fully disabled meaning no mic. Which would mean they would have to lose features of voice control in games or else they would completely screw early adopters that has to turn off their kinect.

So the only way to truly make these hypothetical/rumored systems even would be yet another complete overhaul to the OS.

You can snap skype now. Can't wait to try this out with co op games.

My XBOX ONE stopped reading discs all together now.  I called XBOX Support and they said I have two options, send mine now and wait or they can send one first and I ship mine back.  I went for the latter.  HOWEVER, this is where the problem started.  She said she cannot process the order, let me get tech support to help (tech support to help tech support is ironic).  They finally said, someone from the Advanced Program will call in THREE DAYS to set up a return.  So, essentially I have a XBOX that I cannot use since their returns system is broke....for THREE DAYS!!!!!  WTF Microsoft, you are a billion dollar company, get it together.

So, now I wait.

Also, are all Game Saves saved to the Cloud?  I basically have only a handful of games.

No reason? Yeah, nothing other than completely breaking the instant access enabled by voice commands such as Dr recording or switching to another app. Yeah let's just let devs neuter the system for a minute amount of performance.
They could just make all the voice stuff work via headset I'd think. Or perhaps they can make the Kinect mic still work and disable the other portions of of it like the video tracking as Jimmie noted above and get a power boost still.

But yeah, if it's just minute then it's not worth it. If they can boost it to get more games to 1080p and/or 60fps then they should do it so they stop getting hammered in reviews for games running lower than on PS4.

That stuff in reviews matters, even if the differences are negligible. It hurt the PS3 last gen with the 360 versions running better and a lot of big multiplat games only being advertised for 360. This time the tables are currently flipped in both those accounts.

The next CoD will be big. MS really needs it running well and marketed only on Xbox

Holy hotness, I love the dynamic swapping of your Pins with Smartglass, the other day I spent way too much time sending Apps to the front to arrange them how I wanted.
External Storage Support! Awesome

Definitely will get an Eternal Drive before this updates comes out, I'll more than likely run out of space on the standard one within the consoles life cycle.

Probably stack up with a 3TB one, was going to get a 2TB but it's $28 more for the extra 1000 GB's.

xbox one os keeps getting better and better and first next gen with external storage :D  i think i wil get one for back up reasons and bringing stuff to other systems will be awsome.

Now the question is can x1 get even cheaper if they lower the hd space or even sell a system with just enough space for os and require external drives for other stuff.

Smart glass is turning into something really cool in my opinion really like what i seen in the june update for smartglass.

Actually, Wii U was the first with external storage.

Now, if they could add full DVR capabilities we are golden (yeah, yeah I know no one cares about TV but I do).

im sure most cable boxes have some from of protection on dvr stuff unless the cable box sees x1 as a tv it good chance will never happen.
I read they were working on it. Big mistake on their part not to have a built in cablecard port but I'm hoping they can figure out a workaround.
I noticed a typo in your story. 2nd paragraph, first sentence "Wolfenstein: The New Order from Bethesda and Machine Head Games has finally arrived on the Xbox One and One!"
Contstructive and pleasant criticism? Get off the Internet, we don't take kindly to your, uh, kind around here. ;-)

Can we store Music / Video on the External Drive?  I don't believe you can play movies from USB yet.

Also, aren't all game saves saved to the Cloud anyways?

Side note, still waiting for MS to call me back to replace my console.  Called Tuesday, they said 3 days they will call me back just so they can ship the new one.

fyi: PowerStar Golf is currently free, just grabbed it on the website here.

Edit: nevermind, turns out this is being converted to a free to play game and this is now just a basic demo and you have to buy courses etc.  Wish I had bought it when it was a complete game, oh well no interest in it now.
