XNA Community Games Thread--Check out OP for January's Games, Top 10, & Master List

Added:
*Monaco 360 - retro racing (Racing & Flying) Price: 200 Microsoft Points (11/29)
didn't see it on the list. They sure are putting up quite a few games.
Yes, they have sixty games up now. I've noticed a lot of the recent games are at the 200 point price. I would like to find out sales figures for these games. I wonder how they are selling.

For the CAGs who've made the three games Biology Battle/Snakes 360/Audiball, I'm putting together a feature about Community Games in general and would like to interview you if possible. It's for a video game website (diehardgamefan.com)

Kind of sucks that MS and the developers of these games have no way of giving out activation codes to publications or websites for review because that's the main way a lot of smaller games get any information about their titles out there.

Also, Kitchen Sink Wars f'n blows.
Also, Kitchen Sink Wars f'n blows.
For every good game, there are about 10 shitty games right next to it

Also bought Snake360. Using the buttons takes a bit of time to get use to it but once you do, it becomes second nature. If you dig it (I do, wish we still had the arcade on here. I held the top score for 2 years running), its really good. Only problem I do have with the game is there is a course (I think it is course 5) that has a red background which blurs into the wood border which leads to some deaths if your not paying too much attention. Other than that, shit is perfect

oh and I really dig the Monaco game but it not having a leaderboard really kills the game for me

edit: one more thing, the lack of any point and click games is a bit surprising to me

Oh yeah, Plasma Spheres was released earlier today for 400 points. Demo is fun but I would like to know how many stages there is in it though

edit: never mind

Also, since it isn't obvious in the trial, there are 15 campaign levels and 15 battle levels in the full version of the game.

Thanks, I just added it to the OP...up to 61 games now.

EDIT: You'd think on the demos there would be mega promotion of the game's website...so that we can have a place to really see what the game is offering.
Just for reference sake, XNA games do not have achievements.
Yeah, I have that in the F.A.Q.s in the OP. Another interesting and disappointing fact: You must be online to start your community games.
What type of compensation do you developers get for making these?
Supposedly, the developers are to get 70% of the sales (800pt game= $10= $7.00 profit, 400 pt game= $5.00= $3.50 profit, and 200pt game= $2.50= $1.75 profit) However, MS can cut that down to 50% or maybe 40% if they are "advertising" the game. I don't think that we know what that entails, nor do we know any sales figures yet. If I'm wrong about any of this...correct me please! Just got finished with a long day of work.

Um, wow. Just tried out that Swords & Monsters game and I'm not really sure what to think. You can beat it in a second by just clicking through the only menu that makes up the game, so I'm not sure what the point is to the game and why they're charging even 200 points for it. I'm not sure what the second of the three endings are, but you can get two from just the simple change of starting with a woman instead of a man.

This is intentional. The creator even mentions you can beat it in a second in the description.

The game is also offered for free on the developers website, unfortunately to put a game up on Live the lowest cost a game can have is 200 point.

For those sort of put off by reading about Kitchen Sink Wars or Swords & Monsters there are some really good games also on the service.

Weapon of Choice is just a fantastic Contra style side scrolling shooter. It's amazng only one person created this game. Just 400 points

Biology Battle is great if you like Geometry Wars, it's more like the first Geo Wars since there are power ups. There are a lot of unique enemy types in the game. This is one of the more expensive at 800.

Head Banger is 200 points, and you can use the guitar. It's pretty much a guitar hero style game, only instead of seeing a guy play guitar as you play, there's a guy on stage banging his head. It's also pretty challenging, though it uses no licensed tracks.

Audiball is a pretty cool puzzle style game that uses the guitar, is 200 points as well, but it takes a little bit to get used to the game.

Loot, Steal, Destroy is a fun multiplayer party game that's pirate themed and is 400 points.

I've been trying them all out.

I know that it's mentioned in the description, but I figured that there had to be some hook to it if they were actually trying to sell it anyway.

It think it's mostly as a way for people to donate cash if they liked it. As you mentioned, you can beat the game several time in just the demo.

Kind of surprised that nothing new hasn't been released on the service in almost a week. We got 60 games in a span of 2 weeks and then bam, nothing but a few game updates

two new card games

Golden Royal Blackjack for 200 points

Shed for 200 points

edit:

I just got done playing the two games.

Blackjack is what you would expect it to be. Basic program with some unlockables. I accidentally bought it but its not that bad for 200 points. As soon as it is actually on the service (its on the Xbox site but not on the console), hopefully it sprouts a nice community. If you dig blackjack, its a pretty good buy.

Shed is kind of cool, I could see it being a really good party game but the presentation on it is really bad but thankfully, its a card game so you don't need fancy visuals. It says online multiplayer so it should be interesting in seeing if it gets people to play as it could be a nice little gem

Thanks, added both of those and these:
*Ladybird Galaxy (Action & Adventure)Price: 200 Microsoft Points (12/5)
*RPaints (Other) Price: 400 Microsoft Points (12/5)
*Torino-X (strategy and simulation) Price: 200 Microsoft Points (12/5)

Ladybird Galaxy seemed kind of fun...but I got enough of it in the demo. Torino-X seemed like it could be cool, but I couldn't get a feel for it in the limited time of the demo.

RPaints, uh, it does not look like a 400 point game...but I'll try the demo later.

Added:

*World Molder (Platformer) Price: 200 Microsoft Points (12/6)

Seems really neat. You play a grim reaper type character and to progress you must shoot a dot out (left trigger I think) and move it to a block and press a to mold the world around you. I liked it...I'll probably buy it after I play the demo a couple more times to be sure.

RPaints is a pretty basic paint program...better stuff for free on the Wii Web Browser...if you're really looking for a paint program.

Edit: Also added: *http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/media/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d8025855013a/Adventurer Pets HD (Action & Adventure)Price: 200 Microsoft Points (12/6)

I really dig Ladybird and Torino-X. I'll probably pick those up in the near future.

World Molder is decent though the demo level is a bit bland. Don't know if I'll pick that one up. RPaints is really fucking lame.

Also have to say that these games are making me spend more money than I usually do (and I tend to blow quite a bit of money on it as it is)

Couple of new games

Petank Party for 800 points

Tower Revolution for 400 points

sweet, we get a bocce ball game  though 800 points is a bit steep. The screen shots make it look good but I dunno about 800 points for it.

Tower Revolution looks okay as a tower defense game. If the screenshot is correct, only 9 levels kinda sucks though

Added, thanks!
Fatal Abyss was also made by a CAG, namely me. : ) I don't post much but I do read the site every day. I did a couple of "making of" videos here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gerTUAKSCvg and here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI0ULCRsB50 . up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, x at the main menu screen will get you an alternate (and impossible to play) view. Enjoy!
This is in the op now.

I get the strong feeling that the listing of community games by popularity is broken as there is no way RPaints could be in the 4th spot

So I know it's kind of hard to say because there are so many, but what Community games do you guys think are worth purchasing? The only one I've really considered thus far is Snake360 because, let's face it, everyone loves snake.

To me

Biology Battle (my favorite game on the service. If you dig Geometry Wars, this is a must own)
Snake360 (takes a bit getting use to using the buttons to move but once you do, its a pretty solid snake game)
Blow (awesome little puzzle game with a shitload of levels)
Lines (another fun puzzle game)
Casino Royal Blackjack (really good blackjack game with a decent community so far)
Does Snake360 have a standard arcade mode instead of just the set amount of pellets per stage?
yeah, its called survival mode

Another game was released

Couples Sudoku for 200 points

added.
Thought I'd add this...I am curious to see if this boosts sales. Good luck yyr!
Just thought I'd let you guys know that our Holiday Contests have now begun! We're giving away $450 in Microsoft Points and LIVE Gold subscriptions! Head over to www.Snake360.com and check it out...good luck to all entrants!
Weapon of Choice
Headbanger is pretty challenging if you own a guitar and while it's not licensed music the music in the game is decent and it costs nearly the same as one RB track.
Audiball is a pretty challenging puzzle-type game using the guitar.
Easy Golf is expensive, but it also has a very easy to use course editor if you are into that type of thing.
Couples Suduku is pretty cool actually
ZXS4 Guitarpocalypse is an okay Smash Bros type game for 200 points.
Loot, Steal, Destroy is a fun party game.
Brain Party is cool if you like Brain Age style games.

I tried Swords and Monsters last night holy crap that's trash

I gotta admit I am surprised Swords and monsters even made the 10th (Major posted the top ten community games for last week) I got the trial that game is horrible it was a complete waste basically you hit a 3 times to see what your outcome is and you have 3 total outcomes. Complete trash and showed no actually game programming skills other than making a menu system. I think it would be good for MS to make some restrictions on what can get onto community games. I feel other people would get the idea that stuff like this is ok.
So I know it's kind of hard to say because there are so many, but what Community games do you guys think are worth purchasing?
The only game I've bought so far is Word Soup. It's a lot of fun, but cries out for multiplayer support (local and Live). That's rumored to be coming in Word Soup 2.

You can tell just from the demo if it's a good game for you or not.

First sales data released: (from gamesindustry.biz)

Microsoft has released the first ever top ten sales chart for its new XNA Community Games, with Word Soup claiming the top spot.
Microsoft community games chart follows:

 • 01. Word Soup
 • 02. Golden Royal Blackjack
 • 03. Weapon of Choice
 • 04. Colosseum
 • 05. ZSX4 Guitarpocalypse
 • 06. Sin(Surfing)
 • 07. In the Pit
 • 08. Head Banger
 • 09. Snake360
 • 10. Swords and Monsters

Nothing other than a ranked chart based on sales, so I am still curious about the actual numbers of games sold.

I've only purchased ZSX4 Guitarpocalypse so far and I've been pretty happy with the purchase. The next time my brother is over, I think the multiplayer aspect will add more value to the game. I'm considering getting Snake360 cause of the contests and it's a pretty fun game. I am also thinking about Couples Sudoku....Seems like a really smooth game and my wife has already challenged me by saying she would totally kick my ass. Gotta prove her wrong :D. I also want Weapon of Choice, but I just haven't been in the mood to play that type of game so I keep putting it off.

Word Soup was expected to be at the top (fun game and its a pub game in the UK) but I am kind of surprised to see Blackjack in second. Its an awesome little blackjack program but they need to fix the online bugs.

I wonder if they will be upping this to a top 20 chart as more games get released?

No idea what the Magical Zero Challenge is

Been playing some Biology Battle, and it's very cool. Interesting to hear about the challenge. I guess I need to improve from number 9 or hope some people pass me to land at 20 ;-)

If you like dual stick shooters ala Geo Wars, you'll like this game. It gets pretty intense and claustrophobic. Those bugs are very annoying when you're trying to get as high a multiplier as possible before going into death mode.

Go check out the demo if you haven't yet... well worth a play or 20.

Don't like Cosmos, especially at 400 points. Light Catcher isn't that good either. Sea Blast is pretty good though, its pretty simple but at least in the trial, I found it to be a bit of fun. I might pick that one up
Skimmed through the article and it seems interesting. I will give it a read later. You might want to check you links though...they seem to be broken/linked to the wrong page.
You're right, and I have no idea how that happened. Thank you for pointing that out.

edit: oops, I left a space in a couple tags where there shouldn't be one.

has anyone seen any mention of the Contests Finalists sub-listing that popped up on Live last night? Sure, some of these did in fact do good in the Dream-Build contest but some of them didn't. Doesn't make much sense to me

Two of them weren't contestants at all.
