I finally got another Zune. My sis bought me a 120GB Zune as a birthday gift :whee:
Let me know how you like the upgrade from the 30GB .
I've been eyeing the Red 120GB Walmart bundle .

I've been using it all day so far, I like it a lot. Not much difference from the 30GB besides the size which is a little slimmer. She got me the black one, which is pretty glossy like a PS3, so fingerprints will be all over the thing in no time. The screen seems a tad bigger and the resolution does seem to be a bit better than the 30GB, and I'm totally loving the squircle, it's very responsive ant it almost feels like a touchpad on a laptop.

I'm sure people have already noticed this, but I just discovered this last night..

The Zune HD case says "hello from seattle" on the left side near the bottom

I am somewhat shocked that none of you have posted this now week old news:

Zune HD to get XviD and SmartDJ

In a somewhat inconspicuous update Microsoft has revealed that the Zune HD will receive a firmware update adding native support for the MPEG-4 Part 2 ASP codec, including the long-awaited format of choice for many netizens, XviD video support. Microsoft has assured that files in this format should play both on the Zune HD itself, as well as when sent out to an external TV display via the HD’s AV Dock.

The update will also address a long-standing criticism about a feature gap between the Zune HD and its PC client-based software– Smart DJ playlists will also be added onto the player itself, currently only available in the Zune’s PC software. This would finally make the Zune HD’s playlist feature a contender with the on-the-fly Genius playlist capabilities of the iPod Touch.

Even better, Zune Pass users connected to wireless internet will be able to to create Smart DJ playlists that incorporate streamed content from the Zune Marketplace, besides the songs already stored on the player. I’m not a Zune HD owner at the moment, but this prospective firmware update coming Spring is slowly becoming a strong reason for me to look for a Zune HD to play with.

XviD? Awesome!

:whee:

Is that update ZuneHD exclusive? I hope not because if it is I might have to see if my sister can return my 120GB and I'll pony up the difference to get the 32GB HD.
They seem pretty good about updating the old players .
[Giving 30GBs the new menu and games]
I wouldn't rule it out just yet .
doubt it. MS wants people to buy the HD

After about 2 weeks of weird stuff happening with my 1st Gen Zune 30, I think it's finally dead.

At first it had problems syncing which I think was an issue with the Software. Then it would randomly freeze or skip during playback. Today it was stuck on multiple maintenance screens while making really loud sounds (hard drive trying to do something).

Now I can't even get it past any of those screens into my Music.

Looks like I might have to invest in the HD. Do the HD's have better/reliable Hard Drives than the First Gens?

Was all of that occurring before or after the update ?

Nope. I didn't even know there was a hard reset before the update haha

I read stories of how the 4.0 software made a lot of Zunes go nuts. Once I got the new software, a couple weeks later the avalanche of problems started.
The HD's don't have hard drives. It's all solid state flashram. No moving parts. So yes, that is always more reliable than a hard drive.
Are the 2nd Gen's the same? (Flashram?)

I love how that screenshot shows an .avi file that is clearly from a torrent site/release group naming and everything. Definitely nice to know though.

I can't wait until they fix the video conversion part of it. I think they said it was going to be fixed in a later update.

Are there known settings to convert to so the Zune software doesn't have to re-convert when syncing ?

I just noticed that the updated software doesn't have my play count under my username in the upper right-hand corner anymore. Boooo. I liked having that there.

EDIT: Duh. Fixed it. Just had to sign in, dumbass.

Thanks, Link.

I just noticed since the newest update Downloads shows up when your browsing your Collection .
Before it only showed under Marketplace .

I'm one tiny bit happier .

Man oh man:
30gb HD from J&R online for $243.xx shipped (after coupon)
OR
30gb HD from Zune Originals for around $290 shipped (blue or black color with artist print on back)
?
Sooo...the new update can take avi's right?

Does the Zune still have to do some sort of converting in order for it to format correctly onto the device?
I think it depends on the codec. I've had some that get added right away and some that go through the conversion. It's pretty good though if you're not in a rush.

K. Just checking. I stopped syncing because I found it curious that the Zune software was telling me it was converting my AVI's after I had read in this thread that the Zune would now take them.

I suppose I'll just have to sync my season of Modern Family onto my Zune when I have the appropriate time.

They need to let your PC do the converting while it's idle, so we don't have to wait 20 minutes to convert as it copies to the device .
I almost seems like common sense .

They need to have features over and above Apple/iTunes not just parallel bullet point features .

I wish I could just shuffle all songs from a single artist without any playlist creation involved .

They should take requests for features and have a poll or something .

Anyone who feels the same take the voluntary survey that is in your Zune monthly e-mail.

I am a little confused. I don't think the Zune is supporting Xvid yet, as I thought the news that came out suggested that the Zune itself will read Xvid in an upcoming update. All that's happening right now is that the player in windows recognizes certain avi's as something it can convert to wmv.

This has been possible since day one.

Go to Settings/Music/Shuffle...turn on

Go to Music/Artist/Choose Artist/Play All...done. I've been doing this since I've had my 1st 30GB brick...one of the best features out there.

I love the 'Add to now playing' feature, you can always add one song to play next during any type of playlist and as soon as the song is over, it will continue with your current playlist.

still having that weird problem where the Zune software thinks i have NO space left , yet I have 6 gbs of space on the hardware :(

I think it might have been because of the user apps I installed...out they go!

Maklershed, are those compressed or uncompressed AVI files?

I bought a new CD (2010 release) and can't rip it to the Zune. Well, I can, but it's all screwed up. First, it takes an incredibly long time to rip each song. The entire CD took me about half an hour, when every other CD has taken me about a minute. When it rips the tracks and I play them, a bunch of static drowns out the songs so you can't hear them. I've tried it several times and it always happens.

Anyone know what the issue is?

Could be some kind of DRM? I remember at least 2 CDs I bought a few years ago got all fucked up when you ripped them because of DRM...but that's just a guess, I'm not very up to date with CDs...since I don't buy them anymore.

Overkill-Ironbound

I did a google search last night and turns out many US copies are defective. There's a bad batch of CDs out there. Even when I play the actual CD, all I hear is static. I'm trying to contact the label for an exchange.
