Hey Gary, thanks for ignoring my message on Live asking for a camp invite.
I finally got to play, and I just finished a 3 hour session with the game. The best way to sum up my feelings would be to say that I am very let down. For as much as they added this year, they fucked up just as much stuff.
On the bright side, I did get 9 achievements for 180 points, and I'm close to a few more. But let's start with that- achievements.
The achievement for getting a flash KO against the CPU is glitched. I've gotten flash KO's 25+ times, and no achievement. I looked it up, and people everywhere are reporting the same thing. Not a single one of my friends has the achievement, not even the guy who's had a review copy for over a week. Some people claim they have gotten it, but I have yet to see any proof. And even if they did, it's still glitched for a lot of people.
Then there's the "Fighting with pride" achievement. It's not glitched, as far as I know, but the means of acquiring it that everyone is mentioning does not work. I read that you have to get in a clinch and throw some blows back and forth. I did every type of clinch and used every type of strike possible from every clinch, and even used former PRIDE fighters. No achievement.
The strikes feel... off. It's like they were trying to steal Fight Night's system, but didn't do it right. yeah, glancing blows and such are more realistic, but the strikes don't feel anywhere near as impactful as they did in 2009.
I also can't get a fight stopped due to a cut. Every time I try to inflict more damage on the wounded area, I knock the guy out. Any tips?
I completed Title Mode. That was a breeze. Title Defense, on the other hand... whoa boy. I just have to say, I *really* hope the cheap AI is only in this mode and not in the rest of the game, especially the career. That could cause me to get rid of the game very quickly- something I never do.
You have to go through all 12 fights in Title Defense mode in one sitting, which is a pain in the ass. And the fights get ridiculously hard. The difficulty you choose does not matter in this mode. The worst part of it is how cheap it is.
In 2009, the computer got more skilled and offered more of a challenge as you increased the difficulty. In 2010, the computer just cheats. It's one of the few bad parts of the Smackdown vs. Raw series, so Yukes apparently thought, "Hey, our UFC game doesn't have enough flaws" (I'm not being facetious; 2009 had very few problems) "Let's add this in and practically break the fucking game!" The CPU will literally catch every punch or kick on the higher difficulties. You cannot attempt strikes without getting destroyed.
I haven't played online yet, but I hope that is mostly lag free like last year. I also hope that we can at least alternate who the 1 trainer is per camp so we can all get the achievement and not have to create multiple camps to get it.
I haven't played Career Mode yet, but it looks much improved from last year. I just worry that the AI will be like it is in Title Defense. if not, it should be a ton of fun.
Event Mode is really awesome, and has the exact presentation of a UFC PPV. I'll have to go through and actually watch a card and see how entertaining it is. I have to do that to get the achievement, anyway.
In summation, based on the features I have played- everything but career mode and online- this game, while having better features/modes than 2009, is definitely step back. Had I not played 2009, I'd be thrilled with this game. It's a very good game on its own. But, as for now, I simply shake my head and dream of what could have been.
