EDIT: New dashboard releases today, 12/06/11.

I was on Engadget.com and they had a good write-up of the Fall 2011 Dashboard update that is coming up later this year.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/09/xbox-live-fall-2011-dashboard-update-preview-bing-search-voice/

It's a pretty radical change from what they showed from their view of the late alpha build they had access to. The look is very "tablet-esque" as they termed it, with Bing search and Bing voice command integration into the mix.

Worth a look, and there's supposed to be an open beta coming up next month. This will be like the last Dashboard update beta, I'd guess.

Beacons! Yeah! Would love for this to be here yesterday. Also like the promise of full Kinect integration. It sucks not to be able to start Fruit Ninja Kinect from within the Kinect Hub, for example!

Not a fan of this update in the least. Couldn't care less about Kinect integration (Don't want a Kinect, don't plan on ever buying one), and I've got zero use for any kind of voice recognition, especially using Bing. I don't use Bing...and Beacons....Sounds really stupid.

MS can do this type of stuff, yet still can't add in a web browser for checking email and whatnot. Lame.

Yep ... very true!!!

This. Especially if we get free game again.

Also I got a Kinect and am eager for better menu interface with it (especially on Netflix and Hulu).

I despise the current UI, and it's hard to imagine they could make it any worse, so I think anything different will be an improvement...

They are not going to take a chance of undercutting their own PC market. An xbox with internet explorer on it could replace the home PC for some.

What's the point of a web browser on a console? It would definitely be easier to navigate the internet with a real keyboard and mouse, and you can always connect a PC to a TV, I don't see the point of one.

You clearly aren't a fan of porn then.

I agree. Web browser on a console is one of those things people say they want but in reality most never use, like backwards compatibility. I used the web browser on Wii and on PS3 maybe 3 times total. In an age where you can go browse the web on your PC, laptop, or phone there isnt much need for you to be able to on your XBox.

I am looking forward to the new dashboard. I know a lot of people fear change and will always complain that the older version was better but this is one of the reasons I like XBox the best. A new fresh interface every year or so just keeps the old box alive a little longer.

I could care less about a web browser. I've used the one on my PS3 a whopping 3 or 4 times. Kinect integration however is a differt story. I as well as many would love to be able to choose from all the Netflix movies or select a kinect enabled game from the main menu (using the kinect). Hopefully the best will also include the YouTube app they discussed during E3, that's probably something I would use often.

Does the Top Bar wrap around like the current Dashboard?

I'm kinda surprised it's taken them this long to add Search to the 360. Especially since Wii and PS3 have had it for what seems like forever.

Instead of integrating Bing and Kinect, I'd like it if they created a dashboard that doesn't take 45 seconds to load.

i'll never want web browsing on my xbox, there's also enough problems with lag in multiplayer games...all i need is some spyware running in the back eating up my nets and my processing speed.
Looks shitty compared to the way it currently is. I hate change.
haha, I said that when they changed it from the perspective dashboard to what we're using now.

I just do not get some people. A web browser added to a console would cause lag in multiplayer games? Nonsense.

Another saying they would never want a web browser yet they want youtube.....

I use my PS3's web browser constantly. I use it for email, checking game guides, this website, youtube, everything I'm too lazy to get up and move to another part of the house to check on the PC. Having it on xbox would allow me to shut one system off now and then. Plus not everyone has a laptop, or a cell phone to check the web on, or want to connect their pc to their tv.

Yet it's super cool to be able to wave your hand to scroll netflix? I'd take a web browser over that stupid crap anyday. MS should concentrate on improving the core experience for all users, not constantly upgrade for a device most do not own.

I'd never want a Kinect, yet I'm forced to look at adverts for it every time I go to the dash, and now getting an update that's completely useless for anyone that doesn't own one. Like adding in a basic browser would kill their PC business. Riiiight, that makes total sense.

Haha so did I! I also say the same thing every time Facebook makes a change. In the end though, it grows on you.

I don't have kinect nor do I plan to, I'm fine w/my xbox not having a web brower, or youtube, I don't even use twitter or FB. it's likely the next xbox will have more online features.

As someone who continually rocks alpha distros; they can change the look every damn week for all I care but, unfortunately, they charge money for themes so it all comes off as slimy in the end.

I'd love to hear from someone who has actually paid for a theme in that regard.

Well I did pay for a few seasonal themes last fall. Santa's Village and Pumpkin Patch, plus a few game themes, and it'll suck if I can't use them after this update. Atleast with the PS3 I can download all the free themes I want, but paying for them and not being able to use them anymore is def not cool.

They won't get rid of Premium Themes. Since when has MS ever passed on easy free money?

Just looking at those rough Alpha pics tells me there will be plenty of room for background images. I'm getting really sick of ads in a paid service and that Mobile Apps blonde lady who can't seem to get a good picture/screenshot of herself to save her life.

Backwards compatibility is nice for early adopters.

I do want the better Kinect integration, but yes, yes, a thousand times yes to the latter!

I like the new look, as it looks like they've finally figured out a logical way to organize the apps and features on the dashboard that are such a mess right now.

Faster loading and an overhauled storefront/library would be great, as there's a huge difference between the plain set of menus that you're offered in your XBLA library compared to how game pages look in the store. I didn't see any mention of the cloud storage feature, so I hope that wasn't cut.

Also, get rid of the god awful video library app. I only want to see the videos I've downloaded, not everything that's attached to my account. I no longer check the Zune marketplace regularly and only get on to download The Guild episodes so I can delete the app before watching them.
I do the same download the vids then delete the app before watching routine because the app is just so slow and bloated.

Actually, the whole damn 360 OS is slow and bloated even after the slight lowering of the footprint when they switched over to the newer flattened design.

Saddest of all is that every single damn one of us knows exactly how to speed-up the OS significantly = yank the ethernet cable. It seems like any time that the system has to pull some ad or list or leaderboard or even ding an achievement these days it stutters or hitches a bit when it's connected to the internet.

I'd rather stream the guild than from the zune app than download it.

I don't like loading zune to watch non-game videos I've downloaded either, but I sort of understand why they do it; they have a lot of money riding on zune content and they are trying to drive people into it. I just hope the rumors are true about it going semi-subscription soon - that would be sick.

So themes aren't made useless right? I really don't want to feel like an Apple fanboy that has to have everything sterile and white.

Not to mention, people who have bought many themes would be pretty pissed.

I am happy that I won't miss things like sales, because they're shoved all the way over, now. I'd love to be able to completely remove the 'Music' and 'Movies' tabs though.
You clearly aren't a fan of porn then.
Not something I expected upon entering this thread!
Moral of the update don't ever buy themes the next update makes them obsolete because they're a waste of money
Fixed.

Y'all know Mass Effect 3 has some very interesting Kinect integration with voice commands to control your squad, right? I mostly don't care too much about the Kinect, but I'll probably buy one on a Black Friday deal just to use it with ME3.

The update probably was in preparation for the new update, yes.

And I figured I'd sign up. Not like I ever get invited to these things. Not really sure who my ISP is though so just put something down which may be right.

Still couldn't care less about the Kinect, ME3 or not. And not about to sit in an empty bedroom yelling at the tv to move characters around. Used to be that people who'd talk to their tv's ended up at the local mental hospital.

I game in a bedroom. MS didn't take into consideration anyone that games in a small space. Couldn't use a Kinect even if I actually wanted to.

Because of the room size, and the fact that 80% of the room is taken up with a queen size bed, plus two dressers, and two bookcases, my chair is literally, as you can see, three feet away from the TV.

Looking at a picture of the "Home" page I see I have to move through "Social" and "Live TV" before I can get to Games or Videos. Thanks for letting me shovel through the crap MS.

Also it's awesome how may adverts they're cramming into a service that I already pay for.

EDIT - I wonder if they're going to kill any of the Guide button fuctionality to force people to go through the dashboard. Thats me being very cynical but I'd not be surprised.

Pretty doubtful for the 360's lifecycle I'd say.

I'd say I have enough room to use a Kinect, but I still won't buy one. It has nothing of interest for me past, present and future.

It use to be that sitting for hours staring at pictures would get you committed as well.
