Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
By the way, playing Dredmoor, here's a build I recommend.

Swords
Shields
Dodger
Crossbows
Aimer

You probably will need the ranged of crossbows when the OBLIGATORY ROGUELIKE INSTAKILL/ARMOR DESTROYING/WEAPON DESTROY ENEMIES that I haven't seen but know will appear instantly. Level 2 dodger gives you the knight's jump skill which is free and nice. You can take an additional caster suit just to give you something to do with the blue bar. Level 1 Golemancy summons basically a spike trap at a spot you cast which is good for clever play and a bit less annoying than an all-too-short buff but probably less useful.
If you enjoy Roguelikes, check out Desktop Dungeons. It's a mini roguelike game. I won't call it a "casual" game, because it takes a fair amount of thinking and planning to win consistently, but you can play a full game in about 20-30 minutes. It's kind of a hybrid puzzle and roguelike. The alpha version is fully stable and free forever; they are planning a full release with more stuff in it and they say they plan to get it on Steam. I really enjoy this game and I'm looking forward to the final release.

Good recommendation, but after playing it for a day, Desktop Dungeons felt like Windows Free Cell - thousands of randomness, but in the end you have no real freedom of how you play... you either do it in the right order (and win) or you screw up on step #50 and start all over. Fun game, but I can't even consider it an RPG since everything is static and preset. Its more like a power-point presentation thats out of order (your job - click the slides in the correct order) than an RPG. :cold:

That said, I think for $4.50 I'll try dredmor. Steam has got me hooked on these cheap games like a crack dealer with free samples.

Agreed on Desktop Dungeons. It's kinda decent fun but it gets old fast.

EDIT: For the record, I've been waiting since Wednesday for NCSoft support to help me get back into my Guild Wars account. I really regret paying them any sort of money.

I agree with both of you. It's more of a puzzle, and definitely not an RPG But I don't think of Roguelikes as RPGs either - they are more like really complicated puzzles, too.

Once I'd beat it with every one of the main 12 characters, I lost interest. The other challenge dungeons were good but they required getting a good, lucky starting position. It was my lunch-hour game for a couple of weeks. Hard to complain about "free" and it sounds like they have a lot more planned for the pay-fer version.

I own 38 of those games, but I didn't count the DLC (Borderlands, Splinter Cell Conviction, etc) so really, a few more. I really need to stop buying games faster than I can play them. I doubt I've gotten through even ten of these 38 (and that's not even my complete collection on steam).

Played and beat Hitman: Blood Money from the sale, about as fun as I remembered it but the interface seemed more archaic than I recalled it being on PS2. Could be they gave it a polish before they released it on the consoles.
Have the SEGA Genesis Collections ever gone on sale?
Yes, I got it several months back for $10.xx, which worked for me since I haven't played the vast majority of them.

Man...I'm conflicted here. I didn't see them go on sale during this summer sale and I really want them, and it's half the cost to get them on Amazon for Xbox 360 but I'd like to have it on Steam both for the ability to download whenever I want and the ability to use any control scheme.

So you got all 4 collections for $10.xx? Damn, that's a good deal.

EDIT: I actually have a RIFT Standard Edition account key here, comes with free month. It's not a Steam key (so I don't think your game will be registered with Steam) but I haven't used the account key yet (bought the game on Steam, tried a free trial first, didn't like the game). Would anyone be willing to trade it for one of the SEGA Genesis Collections?

Sounds fun but I have Sim City 4, and I guess that will fill all my Sim needs for now.

I've been waiting for this to go on sale!

HOT DANG wanted this since before the summer sale, and didn't want to buy it for the 30% off summer sale ($12.something). Instant-buy for me at sub-$7.

I have to say Desktop Dungeons has never gotten old for me. I absolutely love it and even after playing it so much, I'm still amazed to find new strategies. There's actually 15 classes and 4 class/race hybrids. The 3 bonus classes and 4 race/class combos you unlock play a lot differently than the other classes. For instance with the vampire, you almost have to play the game in the complete opposite way that you would with any other class. I also loved the campaign that you can unlock, but sadly it's too short and easy. I'm sure the new version will be much more like the campaign though.

It's not a Steam key (so I don't think your game will be registered with Steam) but I haven't used the account key yet (bought the game on Steam, tried a free trial first, didn't like the game). Would anyone be willing to trade it for one of the SEGA Genesis Collections?
I'd say wait for the next major sale. Look at it this way: You've already waited twenty years; what's another few months?

Just for kicks, how many of those games do YOU own? In any format (steam, console, other PC), but currently own, not something you played and sold off.
I have about 64 of these. I didn't count DLC that came as part of stuff like Borderlands GOTY. (i.e. Counted it as one title, not five.)
Question?? City in Motion or Empire and Napoleon Total War GOTY ??
thanks
CIM any good???
does both run in Win7 64?
If I had to pick, I'd be all over that Empire/Napoleon pack. It's a pretty good deal considering it's cheaper than when it was on sale during the recent Summer Sale. It's hard to imagine it dropping any lower than $7.49 any time soon. Plus, the game registers on Steam, so.. no real loss here if you don't want multiple digital distribution client. :bouncy:

As for comparison: it's pretty much apples vs oranges. City in Motion looks very much like SimCity; which is a city management simulation. While the Total War series has always been about managing your armies on the map and engage in badass armies vs armies battles, in which you can zoom in and out of to experience the awesomeness in all of its glory.

.. I may be a bit bias here, but I'd say jump on the Empire/Napoleon pack if you had to pick.

But to each is his own since the Total War games may not be your cup of tea.

NyxQuest just got an update, I think, from Steam for me. There's no update history record up right yet. I recommended that one pretty hard in the BIG SALE and if people are having save issues because of me, I feel on the hook. I had no issues, but it's possible they might have fixed it with this patch... maybe?

Or maybe I'm just seeing things.

Just reading through some of the discussion - FYI - Cities in Motion is not a city sim.

It's all about satisfying transportation needs for pre-made cities/scenarios.

If you're buying it because you're a SimCity fan (as am I) just be aware it isn't the same sort of game.

I'm a huge sim city fan, but I also like these sim-management type of games (props if anyone remembers Transport Tycoon, MAD props if you know about OpenTTD and play it). So it still fills a niche that I like. But you have a very good point. At the MOST, you'll be designing a city in the map editor (where everything is free) and then playing it in a custom sandbox game.

But this game does have several campaign missions, and although they revisit the same cities, the time era, objectives, etc are all different and they all feel different from the previous. I like how citizens will present you with "missions" for you to fulfill (hookup bldg A to bldg B, or have x% of the city covered, or other stuff) with some money/popularity/other as rewards.

Sim management, and it looks beautiful!

thanks

I was just wondering the same thing. Is this at all similar to Transport Tycoon? If so I may have to reconsider...

I'm a retard at Terraria, or rather, at the controls. I'm such a console gamer. Getting slaughtered by friggin gels because I keep pushing keys other than WASD and therefore neglect to turn my character around to stab them.

I wish the game supported the 360 controller. :(

i found them easy to get used to. I'm playing on a server with a few friends and its alot funner with others. :)

I made a resolution that this steam sale wasn't going to be like the others where I go buy everything and then never play them. So far I've been able to beat Darksiders (an imperfect port but well worth the $5 I spent) and the Dawn of War 2 collection I bought from a previous sale (what's to say? these games are effin' awesome). I feel pretty good that I'm actually making some progress on my backlog and having fun at the same time.

Did you use KB&M for Darksiders, if so how are the controls? i picked it up during the sale for $5 but hesitating to install it if the controls are bad.

:applause: I'm colored jealous by the time you can dedicate to gaming.

I have been able to find more time than usual to game. I've been putting it into Trine- a beautiful little platformer.

If you are not aware the ultimate collection on the xbox 360 has 48 games in total while the steam version has only 40 games in total. The ultimate version has some arcade games as unlockables and it also has the phantasy star games. Also it looks like the steam version has a couple of different games. (Shadow Dancer and Eternal Champions)

Hopefully this helps a little. I would recommend getting the ultimate collection on the xbox 360 and maybe getting the steam version later if they have a really good sale.
New free to play game on steam, War Inc. Battlezone.
Anyone play it before, how is it?
Long story short: it's free, so try it out.

I actually posted about it in the freebie section a few days ago when it went open beta. It ain't a half bad game actually, especially considering I've hated every F2P game I've ever tried...except Global Agenda.

It's a third person shooter and plays like Socom I suppose...but a lot less in "tactical"...

Give it a shot. It's fun. Servers seem kind of low, but you always find a game within seconds, and I'm sure steam will help with that too

It is like TTD in that it focuses more on the routes and vehicles more than other aspects. There is still challenge though, because you can't just mass-build one type of transit and expect to make money. Traffic is a real concern (build your tramline on the downtown roads and watch as your tram moves slowly blocked by cars, and your buses have trouble moving at all), so you need intelligent route design, such as feeding your buses into your metro stations.

Tramlines are also awesome, btw, because while placing them is tile/grid based, and they can run on roads or cross them, they can also run down the median between double roads (not harming traffic) or through parts of buildings (like the front area of a hospital or courtyard of a church).

The money aspect is a lot like TTD - maybe hard at first, then you figure it out, then it becomes less of "how much can I get" and more to "how masterful can I design this place".

Although your only "cargo" is people, its how you manage your routes and get people around the city with your coverage that matters. The AI people in this game are smart enough to transfer, so you can bus them from their rural homes to the water ferry, which they ride across and hope on a tram, taking them into the city metro. You make more money this way (they pay at each transfer) and its the whole ideal of this game - making a mass transit system that flows together.

There's also a community I found (citiesinmotion exchange) that has user maps, some tweaks (prices/speed/capacity/etc) and some new vehicles and whatnot.

Also, the DLC is very optional (you're only buying a few items with the DLC, the exception is Tokyo since its a whole map + scenarios). So think of the DLC more like "toss the Developers a couple bucks cause you love them, and they want you to have 5 new vehicles". But if you didn't get any DLC you'd never even know it was missing.

All in all, I'm loving it (it isn't replacing my OpenTTD, but filling a side-role). :bouncy:

My son and I have done nearly the same. Its nuts considering all the other high end new games I have sitting around right now. This game is so much fun though.

There are plenty of programs that will allow a 360 controller to mimic the keyboard. I use Xpadder, its $10 and works flawlessly so far. But Im sure there are plenty of free ones too.

Wow, that helps a lot. I guess I'll get the collection on the Xbox 360 for now.

somehow I double posted so I'll edit this one to say that Dwarfs?! is a very nice game, very worth $2.50 but havent had the time to play it much since I have, like all of us, a huge backlog.
