Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Holy Mother of fucking God. Alpha Protocol for $2.

Ok wow, Sega has some fucking awesome deals today. I think I will just get that because I already have Sonic Adventure for the PS3. Now lets see what else is up for the deals.

Also in conjunction with Sega's deals and the awesome Alpha Protocol for $2 looks like Company of Heroes franchise is going 80% off for the weekend.

EDIT: SEGA deal is up, don't know if they are going add anything daily (doesn't look like it) but it looks like 50-90% off everything Sega till the 27th.

AP for $2 is most definitely worth it, got it for 3 and change a few months back. Still haven't beaten it, but it had some decent gameplay with some great dialogue choices.

Thinking about biting on AvP almost solely for the campaigns. Are they worth the $5?

Awesome. Does anyone know if Alpha Protocol has a demo? I'd like to see if it would run on my laptop. Might have to jump on the Company of Heroes deal too.

Well damn, I had to buy Alpha Protocol at that silly price, I already own a physical copy, but heck, for $2 I can donate that to goodwill.

Oh yeah, and I bit on the Genesis and Megadrive pack, I can relive my... ah, well, not really childhood, I can relive my.. um... younger years?

Heck with those and the Amazon deal from Test Drive Unlimited 2, I am getting 5,000,000 games for like... 27c!!! (or something)

Alpha Protocol for $2? Yes please.

I loved the original CoH -never played Opposing Fronts or Tales of Valor....ToV was the good...err, "better" expansion of the two, right? Worth my time or just let that old gem of a game hold a special place in my memory and not foul it up with those expansions?

I always liked watching a friend play Sonic Spinball when I was a kid.

Is it like Sonic in a big pinball table? Or is it more like traveling through worlds that are sort of pinball-themed?
Man, I wonder why Crusdader of Centy has never appeared any freaking where.

Also, Phantasy Star should so be on Steam.
I swear I saw a Phantasy Star on Steam at some point in their classics packs.

Info about the classics from Steam forums:

- Save states
- Filters
- Multiple resolution support, up to at least 1920x1200
- No online play

In for Alpha Protocol and Company of Heroes.

Not sure if I want the COH expansions, I'll try out the main game and see how I like it. The bundle is the same price as buying individually so might as well.

WOW! Too many good deals today! Time to do some debating on what to get. Alpha Protocol, Total War collection, random other sega games, ahhhhhhhhhhhhh why do you do this to us steam?!

Its more the former than the latter. He does run occasionally, but the levels are more vertically oriented and he spends most of his time in ball form. I definitely recommend it. It was part of the SCC that came out on consoles a few years ago and was the only one I continued playing after getting platinum.

Also, the DoD is actually a game called Lucid...not that anyone will notice.

Actually Sonic Spinball is a weird mix. Basically it's plays like a pinball game, but you have to complete objectives to move on and find the Chaos Emeralds. It's a really good but hard pinball game. It's not a pinball table like game but more of pinball worlds.

Lucid comment = :applause:

I'm afraid of Sir's comment about it being hard. Hard games make me quit and never come back.

But...I love pinball... Pinball of the Dead, mmm.

Any recommendations for Shining Force and Shining in the Darkness?

I'm looking at a lot of these classics, thinking, "Would I have more fun with, oh, anything on my wishlist?"

But then, it's hard to argue with 10 games for $1.87...

I don't like Sonic Spinball. Ugly game too, I mean for the time even.

And yeah, hard games stink! I have never, ever thought a game was too easy, but have quit (and thus sold or not bought) countless games because they were too hard. If I buy a game, I want to be able to finish it, and finish it were it's FUN the whole way through and I'm not tearing my hair out.

Dang, this stinks, I can't log in to Steam to check the Sega stuff because my little c50 notebook is at home downloading Duke Nukem Forever off Steam  Have to wait until I get home....

Yikes, Steam stuff probably AND I'll probably get two games from GOG this weekend...or maybe three.

I like Shining Force 2, though I'm not so sure about 1. SF2 is one of the few strategy/RPGs that I can actually play. Enjoyed it all the way through. It also functions almost like a normal Japanese RPG with random battles, which is good since you can level up (if I'm remembering right). IMO it's one of just a handful in the entire genre that gets things right.

Shining in the Darkness...I want to like it, but the two times I've tried I can't play it past a few hours. I think it was the very first Camelot/Shining game...if I'm remembering right.

If you're worried about Classic Pack 4 - forgetaboutit. Gunstar Heroes and Wonder Boy 3 are in that pack. All the rest is gravy.

Total War mega pack worth it? I already have Alpha Protocol, Sonic DX, and CoH in my cart. I have Shogun 2 and I really like it a lot; just not sure if it's worth adding the entire mega pack to my huge backlog.
Wow, I wonder if they're still updating the pack for people that purchase it? Anyone know?
Steam screwed up when they introduced that pack and for at least the first day the Sonic games were listed. They removed them from the list but some had already purchased it and were upset all the games listed were not included. Steam made good on those.
Some notable absences from those include:

Sonic
Phantasy Star

Are these updated in any way, filters, save states, etc?
I have some of the original Classic Collection bundles on Steam and I'm pretty sure they do save states. The rest I don't know. It's been a while since I last touched it.

Ah, well, good to know. ;)

Bought up the Sega Genesis Collection and Alpha Protocol. It's awesome that you can get 40 (!) old school classics for $7.49, but I wish they all came with separate Steam installers.

also on the fence about alpha protocol - what games does it compare to?

as a side note, i would recommend the shining force games - sf2 was one of my favorites for a long time, just finished sf1 this summer, and enjoyed it very much.

Separate Steam installers? What do you mean?

When you get the Sega Genesis Collection you get one download with all 40 games and you launch the Sega Collection and pick/choose a game from their menu. He is referring to wanting to have each game separately so he can pick and choose which ones to download..
Why? I've heard mixed things about it. $2 seems like a great deal.
Decent game, worth a play through. It is TWO dollars! Cmon guys. Even if you play for a couple hours and don't like it that is worth it...

Hm, I'm not a fan of that either...

Total War Pack is definitely worth it. Rome is one of my favorites.

Nope. Just stick with Shogun 2 - far and away the best.

That being said, if you are really dying to play more Total War then go with Medieval II Gold Edition for $5 (there's a demo).

I was overjoyed back when I bought the Genesis Collection that it has only one entry in my Steam list. But yes, that means you install all or nothing (not that they're spacious, mind you) and now I'm left having to load it and scroll one title at a time through the menu to see if there's anything I don't already have.

I'm glad I read the comments to see why I have the Sonic games when I didn't recall them being in the list previously. This makes... probably 4 formats in which I own them now.
Hm, I'm not a fan of that either...
Yeah, it's basically port of the 360 game if I remember correctly. It works on the 360 because it's one disc but I would rather just have 40 games on Steam to pick/choose from.

Even though I have tons of free space, it's still there are some games I would not download.

Debating on getting Rome and Midevil 2 Total War, just to round out my Total War Collection. I have Empire, Napoleon and Shogun 2 right now. I have not played any Total War yet either, lol.
Why? I've heard mixed things about it. $2 seems like a great deal.

Is Alpha Protocol even worth $2? The reviews are dissuading me.
I haven't played it yet (though own it) but the idea that it's not worth $2 is laughable after all the stuff Giant Bomb has talked about with it. They spent ages talking about it, and I forget who it is, but one of them wanted to start it again after finishing it, if they didn't have so many other games to get through.

It sounds like pretty much just what I was expecting.

I'm playing the same team's Fallout: New Vegas right now, which is pretty awesome too.

The main upside to having a single installer is that it doesn't clutter up your games menu with 40 or so new entries.

The launcher is pretty simple and it allows you to make settings to apply to all games. You kind of flip through them like TV channels. The games themselves are only a few MB apiece. I've got all the packs and some of the Sonic games and it's 3740 MB.

As tempting as all these classics are, I'm going to go with past experience.

"Oh, I got Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for 360 from Goozex today!"

Played for an hour. Never played again.
