Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

I don't get the beef with variants. Multiple covers doesn't affect the comic and its good for people that like collecting or the artwork.
It devalues the non variant comics and it forces retailers to buy extra copies to satify consumer needs (people that want the variants). Eventually stores stop carrying so many titles because of bad sales, books get cancelled that don't have the best sales numbers, etc. People start to wait to buy new books because they know they will be discounted withing weeks. It is a domino effect.

Don't get me wrong, I like the looks of them, but with diamond distributions choke hold on the industry, the're could easily be another crash. I'm sure companies are smarter about it now, but marvel went bankrupt the first time around. I understand Disney isn't going bankrupt anytime soon, but it is entirely possible they will cut a large amount of print because it isn't as profitable as movies and tv.

So, uh... anyone else catch the pilot episode of The Flash while it was "circulating"?

DAMN.

No spoilers, but I'll say that this series has a more promising start than Arrow's pilot offered - and I thought that one was pretty great when it first aired. I will say that no one was able to sell the kind of cheesy dialogue they were being stuck with - Amell's cameo should've been a geek-out moment, but everything about it was cringeworthy. Both actors did what they could with their lines, but it just didn't work. I didn't particularly like how the scene was set up, either - but the swan dive off the roof was better than the version from the trailer. The acting is otherwise solid, though - nothing very high caliber, but about the same as Arrow's typical show.

The episode was FUN, though. The opening narration had me smiling, as did every important character moment involving Barry. The easter eggs were pretty friggin' sweet too, maybe even better than Deathstroke's tattered mask in the Arrow pilot. The villain was kind of goofy (and not in the good way, unlike some other cheesy moments) but it also served the purpose of being just threatening enough without forcing the writers to try too hard to top it moving forward.

The wait for the rest of the first season is going to be even more difficult to deal with now, especially since I'm dying to see where that final scene leads in future stories.

How does everyone feel about the X books getting canned and totally rebooted next year? I'm not so cool with it, but I am surprised they're retconning Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch as Inhumans.

Is this another one of those Disney not so subtly saying "fuck THOSE OTHER COMPANIES!" kinda moves? Because the Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch seems to scream that and once more showing Marvel Comics has no back bone and will keel over to any movie in order to boost sales.

I'll call bs on that X-Men reboot until I see it. People overestimate how much the movies affect the comics.

Yeah I'm with you on this, though the Inhuman thing for Quicksilver\Scarlet Witch does ring of Disney going fuck you.

That's what it looks like. It's apparently going to be from the fallout of this Axis event coming up and Scarlet Witch is sounding like she's going to super rewrite reality at the end of it. I kind of feel like it may be just in case Avengers 2 Quicksilver isn't as well received by fans as DoFP Quicksilver was.

I Still don't fucking understand what Scarlet Witch's powers do or how they work. If you were to tell me it runs on the sales of Duncan Donuts in creating reality altering shit to happen I'd believe you.

Basically she is God. She can do anything as long as she has the juice to make it happen.

Canceling all the X books? That would Apocalyptic! (Anyone read comics in the 90's and get that one?) Scarlet Witch making that all happen? Scarlet Witch being the one to change it to No More X-Books, that's a novel idea and has never been done before. (that was more of a struggle to make a not to clever comment.)

The Humble Book Bundle is a bunch of Dynamite stuff: https://www.humblebundle.com/books And is giving a way a free issue (in PDF...ewww) everyday. First issue is Gail Simone's Red Sonja.

Legenderry by Bill Will Willingham is cool, steampunk versions of Vampirella, Green Hornet, Zorro, Red Sonja and others. I really enjoyed Kevin Smith's Green Hornet. It's basically the movie he wanted to make.

I'm considering that Humble Bundle solely for Cryptozoic Man, just because I'm a huge fan of Comic Book Men (plus Tell 'Em Steve-Dave) and Bry and Walt are the writer and artist, with minor input from Mike and Ming.

I just got done watching and I liked the allusions to other heroes, villians and items like that. The justification for the flash's "logo" on his headpiece seemed super week but whatever. I'm really glad to see Jesse L Martin back on TV and overall I'm optomistic. I still think the CGI is a bit garbage in some scenes but overall the action scenes weren't too bad.

Thanks for the links.

First impressions are, as a lifelong Havok fan, it's interesting the direction planned for the ending of the Xmen. That having been said, Xmen makes up the bulk of my marvel purchases, this could drive me out of comics completely. Not because I'm upset and retaliatory about it, but rather if I'm not going to the store to pick up my Xbooks then I likely won't be driving out there to just pick up 1 or 2 other books at most.

New 52 nearly drove me completely out of comics and I still haven't picked up anything regularly of DC's (aside from Batman) since then. I'm basically down to Batman, a couple other Marvel titles, and the bulk of my comics are X-titles. Without that core of Xtitles making up the backbone of my trip to LCS, my comic buying will likely die a slow drawn out death where I'm only going every few weeks, missing a title that sells out, deciding I don't feel like tracking it down, and then finally just dropping the title.

As for DoFP Quicksilver, I don't think anyone anticipated him to come out of it as well received as he was. Disney likely felt like they could just slide in and give us the Avengers Quicksilver and he would end up shining because people would hate DoFP Quicksilver.

As a bigger issue I would think Marvel might start getting a little concerned about Avengers 2. They've set a mighty high bar for themselves and this thing whiffing could seriously damage their significantly lengthy movie plans. They're essentially restructuring all of Marvel around Avengers related movies and basically using the company as a vehicle for those movies.

It kind of bugs me that they felt the need to give all of the lightning bolts on his costume a practical purpose at all. Barry strikes me as the kind of character who would just be like "Dude, know what would be awesome? Some lightning bolts on my suit! Wouldn't it look cool?!" and boom, problem solved. He was the one who made Oliver a domino mask, after all. Having them be dressed-up sensors just felt like they were trying too hard. A very, very minor annoyance to me, though.

I'm loving some of the fan theories circling now:

with a couple of my favorites being:

A.) Dr. Wells is really Barry's future self, explaining the "FLASH DISAPPEARS" 2024 headline.

B.) Dr. Wells really being Eobard Thawne, with Eddie being both an ancestor as well as a red herring for us comic fans who are expecting him to be the time traveler.

Grodd's easter egg was awesome. With the last couple The Planet of the Apes movies being fairly popular, I could see the people behind this show being brave enough to use Grodd down the line - the trick would be having convincing CGI or practical effects (preferably both?) that look good enough to keep him from being entirely ridiculous. For now, though, I'm just thrilled with the idea of him being out there in this universe... even if they never show him. Some news broadcasts talking about a rampaging Gorilla here and there would also suffice.

I'm very surprised Felicity wasn't mentioned at all, but oh well. Weather Wizard (#1?) could have been better, but at the same time I think that actor's over-the-top performance is also what saved the character for me. I'll be surprised if his brother doesn't pop back up at some point if the Rogues are ever formed.

Man, reading new Invincible and Kirkman don't give a fuuuuuck. I Love how Guarding the Globe and Invincible Universe was used to give more of the characters in his universe some depth and proceed's to brutaly mame and murder most of them now. Kirkman, your Walking Dead is slow and rather frustrating, but Invincible is magnificent and horrifying.

And New 52 Future's End #8 is where I think I'm ending with this shit. I Don't care for any of these characters and nothing about the story warrants it being weekly and moving as slow as it does.

I really don't see even disney canceling the x-books. I'm guessing mutant and x books in particular make up about half the books bought. I have no data to support this, just a gut feeling. My actual guess with a big mutant shake up and scarlett witch is "more mutants". Most of the depowered become mutants again.

There are still depowered mutants? Who else is there? Even when it was the dumb House of M bullshit the only ones who mattered still had their powers, I mean Artie and fucking Leech are still mutants!

I'm pretty sure Dani Moonstar is still depowered.  I think Prodigy is and there's some more but I couldn't tell you who off the top of my head.  But you're right the major ones never got depowered.  Jubilee isn't a mutant anymore but she's a vampire.  Whoever the rest of the New Warriors were during that horrible series that got published after Civil War were all depowered mutants.  I'm not sure if Chamber has powers or not right now, he's fluctuated a few times since losing his abilities.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Well killing off the one last last month was just for shock value. Now this month he runs through the Guarding the Globe guys. For something so brightly colored it feels weird sometimes to see them ripped apart. Also the full blown violent rape from like 2 months ago.

Kirkman is almost to GRRM level now of killing off characters out of nowhere.

Though I also like just from out of no where this event came, like it wasn't clearly telegraphed and super built up, but instead came out of no where and now all the carnage follows suit. Though agree that Kirkman and Invincible is the GRRM of comics in that no one ever feels safe, not even Mark despite him being the title character.

So random question here:

Anyone know a good site with high-res cover artwork without the titles/barcodes/etc on it? Just plain artwork?

I have been binding some of my single issues together, and was thinking of doing a custom cover for some. But I don't want to just grab a cover that has the issue number, price and all that jazz.

Hey all,

I'm wondering if it's worth getting a signed copy of Rocket Raccoon #1 by Skottie Young for 4 bucks?

I don't know much about RR outside of Marvel Vs Capcom 3.

Worth it personally yes. As an investment, well get a picture of him signing it at least to make it easier to get verified later and still don't expect huge numbers.

So I finally read my entire stack of Forever Evil books.

I'll admit, I was suckered. A.R.G.U.S. was getting interesting, building up Steve Trevor to be an important player. He had the info! The plan! The great destiny! Dude was gonna singlehandedly pull the Justice League out of the matrix. I was impressed with DC, readying a non-powered (and non-Batman) character for an important late-game role. And then he gets knocked the fuck out and Cyborg takes the lasso and passes it to Batman, who is also apparently so madly in love with Wonder Woman that he was able to render Trevor pointless by using that connection to pull her and the League out. What. The. Hell. Has that even been hinted at before? I've not read JL outside of event tie-ins.

I enjoyed everything else (aside from the delays). Arkham War was especially fun, although I could have done without comic Bane suddenly dressing like Rises Bane as well as picking up his mannerisms. At least they kept the original mask. I'll admit that the Vest is kinda cool. Pimp coat is just dumb though.

Between the DC Nation short, their role in one of the recent Batman Beyond comic series, and now their recent New 52 appearances... I think I've become a fan of the Metal Men.

Any recommendations when to look for online sales? Time of the year wise.
tfaw.com usually has a fantastic Black Friday sale that each week increases the discount by 10%. Got alot of good deals around that time and it's pretty awesome to come home to a 20 pound package of comics.

I love those kind of deliveries, except for the dirty looks I get from my mail carrier for the next few weeks.

Aw Yeah! Comics in Skokie, IL is having a 25% Off Everything sale today. I'm gonna pick up Raccoon and Godzilla Awakening.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  I was hoping InStockTrades would have a sale online during FCB, but that was a no go.  I saw online mention of a sale last Black Friday so I'm hoping to find a few deals available around then.

For those interested, the Constantine pilot is now floating around online.

It's about as cleaned up as you would expect it to be. It's a shame that, at least as of this episode, they don't really attempt to go very dark considering this is the same channel Hannibal airs on. It still seems to be watchable in the same way the first couple of Supernatural seasons were. Special effects were kind of shoddy, but I'm honestly not sure if they were finished or not. I suppose we'll see. The acting is so/so. Constantine is okay, Liv is kind of bad. The rest involved were all adequate.

John doesn't smoke. He is seen playing with a zippo a lot, kind of in the same way ex-smokers typically have to find something to do with their hands in moments where they would otherwise smoke. Take that for what you will. There aren't any hints of him having lung cancer either, so it isn't likely that they'll do that story at all.

At first it seemed like they were making him way too likeable, but by the end we see just how much of a dick he really is as well as how manipulative he can be. So that's good.

It's watchable, but it'll probably be one of those shows where episodes pile up on my DVR for a bit before I get around to watching them.

He isn't allowed to be seen smoking because you know it might make idiots smoke but I saw the pilot it was pretty cool. I'll be tuning in every week not much else is on.

Something just occurred to me, and various wikis were of no help for this particular question.

Was the Black Adam shown in Forever Evil really Shazam? I just recently finish FE but it had been so long since Trinity War finished that I forgot what happened with Shazam at the very end of it. I also seem to recall Black Adam being dead when Trinity War happened, so...

No. Black Adam was brought back to life.
