Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

Lots of news about Green Arrow during the last couple of days. Lemire's run is coming to an end, so I'm pretty sad about that - especially since I've been hearing rumors that he was only halfway through his plans for the title. The Futures End tie-in is his final issue.

Related to this is the fact that two writers from Arrow are taking the reins. I was torn on this already, because I was worried that they might shift things too closely to what the show is. Then they announce that the Arrow version (or something similar, I suppose) of Felicity Smoak is going to be featured in the book at some point during their run, which I'm also split on. We already have Diggle.

I've hated nearly every change Marvel made to their universe in order to match their movies, and it got me to stop reading their stuff altogether aside from two Deadpool titles. I'm hoping DC doesn't follow their example too much.

No. Black Adam was brought back to life.
Ah, okay. Thanks for clearing that up! Last thing I remembered about Shazam was something about his costume turning black, so I wasn't sure.

You'd be better off just taking a nap. Much better off.
Yeah, I can't bring myself to even sit through superman returns. I bought it on DVD at big lots or something and it sits unopened in a pile somewhere.

I've been marathoning the Justice League Cartoons. I'm almost done with the series. JLU makes a lot more sense when you can watch them in a short period. I had missed a few episodes here and there, so it is nice to fill in some blanks.

And Firestorm maybe making an appearance on Flash since Stephen Amell's cousin has been cast as Ronnie Raymond. I Hope it's pre-new 52 Ronnie, but eitherway I am crazy excited for CW's DC Universe they're establishing. Basically all the meta human's on Flash and street level in Arrow.

...I actually like Superman Returns. It's a much better send-off of the Christopher Reeve Superman continuity than Superman IV was. Yeah, the superkid was poorly implemented, and there was no action. Still liked it.  I saw Returns on TV for the first time a few months ago. Caught it again the next day just to make sure I wasn't delirious the first time around. I now own the DVD, which I took from my brother because he had no interest in ever watching it.

I'm excited about Routh being cast as Palmer. Less so about Robbie Amell potentially being Firestorm. He managed to make Steven from The Tomorrow People the most unlikeable character on a show filled to the brim with unlikeable characters. Stopped watching the show halfway through season because he was such a poor primary protagonist. Then again, my only exposure to Firestorm (and Ronnie in particular) has been in Futures End, so maybe that's what they have planned? Dude is a huge prick in that comic.

Everyone is a huge prick in Future's End. It's why I dropped that shit. There's no way DC can justify a weekly series for the most part since it feels so deliberately slow just because it's a weekly title.

Well Tim doesn't seem so bad, more world-weary than anything. I've only read up to #5 or #6 so far though. Mr. Terrific is intolerable, as is half of Firestorm like I said before. McGinnis seems to dawdle too much. The next batch of issues I'll hopefully be getting on Saturday will determine whether or not I stay with Futures End, other than a couple of the September issues which I'll definitely buy no matter what just because the premise sounds good and/or the 3D covers happen to look particularly slick.

Last issue I read had Constantine step into the series, and his involvement is a very heavy draw for me - it kind of cancels out the disappointment of Green Arrow being absent.

I Haven't read last two or issues since I dropped it, but Constantine's presence felt like he was there just to basically say "uh oh, there's more to this shit then you imagine!" which is really just the book teasing even more and leading the reader on it feels like.

Also why the fuck is Joker's Daughter in the Suicide Squad? Like what if any kind of training or whatever other bullshit can they justify a terrible character being on that team?

I'll agree with that. Honestly #0 is still the best issue of Futures End (and it was FREE!), and I thought #2 was pretty good as well. I only have so much lingering interest in what they're doing though, and ditching the series will free up a lot of money. These next few issues better be DAMN GOOD.

Don't know 'bout JD. I heard her last couple of major appearances were actually really good, but I will always avoid that character like the plague after her debut. Awful. There is NO WAY Joker's Daughter belongs on a team alongside Deathstroke. Not that anything about Slade has been particularly great recently either, but... ehh. Just sayin'.

I've sworn off weeklys. In theory it's a great idea and you get a lot of story. In execution it always ends up overly slow and drawn out.

Wow, so my hype for the Constantine show is rising again. They're writing Liv, the character that the show was set to revolve around based on the pilot, out of the show entirely and replacing her with Zed from the comics. That chick was by far the weakest part of the first episode, so that was a wise decision as long as the actress playing Zed is better than she was. They've also said that they intend to include more and more occult characters from the DC universe as the show goes on, with Zed just being the first.

Sweet. I was kind of bummed out that the show was forcing John to have a wide-eyed, innocent sidekick. This takes care of that. Now if only all of these tv shows were premiering sooner...

Has anyone read Rat Queens? Hilarous and foul mouthed stuff. I thought there was supposed to be a spin off or a one off with the four Daves but now I can't remember.

Finally got around to cracking open my Age of Apocalypse omnibus, the first time I've ever read the story. The prologue with Legion was mind-numbingly boring, but once the timeline shifted the story got pretty damn good. Only halfway through it so far. I like a lot of the character designs here, Cyclops especially - although a couple of the artists went a little nuts with his hair. I never knew Bishop was the lone character left with knowledge of the original timeline. What are the odds Wolverine is given that role in the movie? :p

Anyhoo, Batman Eternal finally wrapped up its first arc. Funny how it suddenly picked up steam in the last two issues and went somewhere. And after the Batgirl issue, I now have another artist whose work I'll avoid whenever possible. Ian Bertram. How the heck did he get a job on a mainstream superhero book, let alone freakin' Batman?

Will be reading my new Futures End issues later. I want to like this series and stick with it, but we'll see how that goes.

Speaking of artists to avoid like the plague, I am really digging She-hulk as far as writing but whoever the artist was in #5 has pretty much killed any interest I had in the series with the Hellcat/Tigra workout scenes and Wyatt Wingfoot. Arms are like 6 foot long. It's called proportion. Look it up. I'll post the artists name later. I don't have the book in front of me.

I have the digital code if anyone wants to trade for MyCokeReward points or maybe PayPal...

Picked up constantine's 3rd and 4th appearance from a 50 cent bin both in nm condition. I already had the full rune, but I figured they may take a bump since he seems to be more popular in general/has his own show.

Considering DoFP made it pretty clear he IS the only one who remembers the original timeline (maybe Xavier too). There's also nothing about Movie Bishop that would explain him remembering the original timeline.

Yeah, I just went and saw DOFP earlier today. Almost broke my tradition of seeing all X-movies in theaters, this was one of the final showings around here.

Funny thing is, I was just kidding when I made that remark. I didn't even see any hints of Bishop being with the X-Men in that final scene. I hope he's involved somehow, although if I have to pick between him or Cable, I'd want Cable to finally get his introduction.

As for the movie itself, I thought it was pretty good. I have problems with the plot and continuity but at this point it just isn't worth mentioning. It felt like an X-Men movie, at least. I didn't expect Mystique to get so much focus. Was kind of disappointed that Banshee didn't get to come back, and that Havok was so underutilized. And what was up with Bishop having to use himself as a battery to charge up his gun, instead of firing the blasts from his hands? Is that something he has ever done in the comics? My brother made the remark that he seemed to have the most useless power by far.

The director's cut blu-ray seems like it'll be a definite buy. It'll be interesting to see if Marvel Studios can top Fox's version of Quicksilver, 'cause he stole the show in this movie.

Yeah, I don't expect Quicksilver to be as comedic in A2, but who knows. I also agree, that director's cut is an insta-buy for me.

I don't think he'd be as funny even if that's what they were going for, Evan Peters seems to have an edge over Aaron Taylor Johnson when it comes to comedic acting. I'm sure he'll have his moments, but I can see Avengers 2 Quicksilver being much more severe - especially considering his and Scartlet Witch's circumstances. Already has the better costume, though.

Anyhoo, I've been considering picking up the two Superman: Earth One volumes at some point. Has anyone here read them? I've heard mixed opinions.

Superman Earth One is good. I'd say it's one of the best things DC has put out in recent years. It is hilariously silly at some points, though.

I really enjoyed the first one while the second one was passable. Still worth picking up and reading though. I've got both of them and the Batman: Earth One Volume 1 as well.

So The Strain premieres tonight. I really wanted to pick up a copy of issue #1 for $50-60 before prices jump even higher...but between games, comics, and the sdcc harley quinn statue, I just don't think I can afford it right now.

#1 is up that high? I wonder if I should selling my issues like that that are fairly new but going for high prices (like peter panzerfaust) I mean, could they really keep increasing in value?

I Have Earth One volume one. It's...okay. Though I think part of the problem was I read it a little bit after Superman: Secret Origins by Geoff Johns and that was a much better retelling of Superman's origin.

speculating is a risky game. Alot of people like to just cash out with guaranteed money. The strain could be terrible and the comic could drop to $10 or it could be amazing and be worth hundreds. The walking dead #1 graded in 9.9 was worth $1800 in 2010. Some people held onto their copies and now they're worth $9000.

There's some modern comics that will sell out and be worth $20-30 on ebay for 2 weeks and then drop to $4 after a month. I guess it's just like video game collectors editions...some will be worth alot, and some will be bargain bin material.

what comics do you have of value?

After going through the collection I think I have like 5-10 that are worth over $50. The most valuable thing I have is the one thing I thought would be the most worthless. A leatherbound unopened copy of Frank Miller's Batman collection.

I just recently went through my collection and realized I had Strain 1, also was surprised to find first appearances of Gambit, Cable (2copies), and Deadpool. I also see that the new 52 #1s are actually not doing too bad. My Ultimate Spiderman 1 (3rd printing) seems to have dropped a bit though.

I Have first 6 or so issues of Ultimate Spider-man first printing  and I've been collecting Walking Dead after issue 36 or so. I'm sure I have some comics possibly worth something, but i never check.

See this is what I dont get about comics. That 9.9 went for 9k. 9.8 is listed on ebay for less than 3k. .1 in grading is worth 3 times as much?

Grading is subjective and the values are inflated. I'm not going to put in the effort, but there may only be a few 9.9 grades in existence (that are actually graded), so that can contribute to the difference. In theory comics have a 100 point grading scale, but most of the world doesn't know how to grade comics correctly so in the grand scheme of things a 9.8 and 9.9 could vary by grader. If I had a 9.8, I would crack it open and keep resubmitting it and try to get a 9.9. The most frustrating thing is this is a modern key, so 99% of them are probably in 9.2 or better shape.

I looked at the cgc site, from what I could gather it takes weeks and costs like 50 bucks to get something graded?

Does being graded automatically up the value of a comic?

Yes because it is a "guarantee" of it's grade. People will be more willing to pay a premium if it has been graded by CGC. There are also population reports that detail how many copies have been given that grade. The final perk is the comic has a unique serial number, so you can trace it to make sure it is legit, not stolen, etc.

I would only get a comic graded that is worth $300 or more (overstreet price guide value) that is in decent shape or an old book that is high value even if it is a low grade comic (like Amazing Spiderman #1)

Personally, I don't have anything nice enough to send in, but I've been trying to buy Amazing Spiderman 1-200 run that a friend of my family owns. If I was able to buy those I would have the first 15 issues and some of the keys graded.

according to the cgc census, there's 722 9.8's, and only 20 9.9's. So yeah, definitely more rare.

for now I only buy cgc slabs on ebay or forums, but i've been meaning to send some in.

I know Walking Dead 53 was going for some nice prices a few months ago, but I haven't checked recently.

anyone have any recommendations how to pick up a physical copy of Spread?  I live out in the middle of nowhere but I don't want to buy a digital copy.

So... Futures End survives on my pull list for yet another month, I suppose. It's keeping me just interested enough that I want to see where it's going still. I'm also curious to see what's up with masked Superman, but I'm figuring it'll be Val-Zod. It was crazy seeing who Cadmus had locked up.

I Have Earth One volume one. It's...okay. Though I think part of the problem was I read it a little bit after Superman: Secret Origins by Geoff Johns and that was a much better retelling of Superman's origin.

Thanks for the opinions. I'll keep an eye out for a sale for a little bit yet, either for a physical copy or digital. I had heard great things about Batman: Earth One, but really didn't enjoy it very much - although the art was fantastic, and the redesigned batsuit was pretty sweet too.

Thought it's great. I might order it too. Are you going to go to the comic shop to pick it up or order from image?
Comic shop. I live in the Nashville Area and there is a pretty decent shop not far from my work.

http://rickscomiccity.com/

I picked up the first issue there and just started a pull box and put that down as a title to pull for me.

Something about the story really grabbed me though, might be that im about to have a girl in a month or so, but hope it stays good. Cover for the next issue looks really good.

Also just got first 3 issues of Southern Bastards from ebay, gonna add that to my list too prolly after I get a chance to read them if they are as good as reviews say they are.

Pretty sure this Thor thing is so they can have a new Avengers team with a foundation made up of new versions of the big three. They already said there's a new Cap coming and Arno Stark is slowly becoming more and more Iron Man, so chick Thor was the last thing they really needed.
