Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Just a heads up for Overwatch players, there's a Heroes of the Storm event going on that nets you a Genji skin (same as last Overwatch/HOTS event) and also a D.Va skin. If you have your PS4 Overwatch linked to your b.net account, you can acquire them as well.

Today or tomorrow might be the last time to use the Toys R Us 15% off coupon (FRIEND15)

I looked through everything and these are the best I could find...

:ps4: Earth Defense Force 4.1 $20 $17

:ps4: Street Fighter V $20 $17

Yeah, I know...
They also have Xseed's Shantae: Half-Genie Hero - Risky Beats Edition still in stock. I nearly waited to long to grab it. I recently noticed it was sold out on Amazon and Best Buy for PS4. Gamestop and Toysrus still have it. I was worried GS might send me a gutted/messed up copy. Plus the 15% off was nearly as good as GCU.

I'm going to try this. I wonder how long it is going to take me to learn this game from scratch in order to get the Overwatch skins.

I've purposely steered clear from MOBAs for years as I mostly don't care for professional gaming (MLG type games) and the toxic lifers associated with playing them.

If anyone isn't aware there's a big promotion right now for Heroes of the Storm which gives you a whopping 20 free character pack which is unprecedented. http://us.battle.net/heroes/en/heroes20/megabundles/ I have no idea about any of the other startup costs associated with this game. I'm hoping its going to be free.

Protip: Just play VS. A.I. on easy. Last time they did the Genji skin it took me about 1:30-2 hours to get through 10 games

I hate MOBAs, but I get dragged into HOTS occasionally by my cousin. It won't cost you a dime and you shouldn't ever feel the need to spend anything. Granted we only play vs AI on the hardest difficulty.

It's a lot more lenient than other MOBAs when it comes to heroes to the point where I don't mind HOTS. You don't really need to worry about getting the most out of a party setup as much as other MOBAs. Especially since you probably won't play it in ranked. Starting out I'd probably just recommend googling an icey-veins guide for whatever character you pick and try and figure out how to play. Make sure to play the map objectives when they pop up as well as take out NPC camps occasionally and the rest is pretty self-explanatory.

Just keep in mind you have to be partied up with someone though to make progression towards the event unlocks.

The latter "quests" after week one don't allow you to play vs AI. Has to be quickplay, unranked or ranked unfortunately.

Ugh, it goes week by week, and all 4 weeks have something I want. It's only 5 games a week though, but you have to play it with a friend. I don't even know if my computer can run the damn game... at least the last week gives 10 lootboxes, which is a steal.

Anyone want to team up? Since you gotta play with friends to get the rewards.

I believe I'm in the final dungeon in p5 and I'm experiencing Mara in glorious HD. Just taking the moment to appreciate his glory.
Btw I loved the twist on who the final boss is.

It should run well on anything that's a Potato 2.0. I don't mind helping if people want to either. My battletag is Draekon#1472. Microphone would be nice, but not necessary. I can always explain things over my headset so long as we joined a channel using the b.net client as there's no voice chat in-game.

You're at the end, yeah. It's also not much of a twist if you're a long time Megaten player. They tend to do this kind of thing pretty much every time with their more recent titles. Just different setups as the game theme changes a bit.

So 103 hours into Persona 5 and I barely beat the final Palace, but I'm still not done. This game never ends lol.

I really regret not maxing out the Temperance confidant though, mine got stuck at 9 since I waited too long and now I'm not in school so I can't continue it

Anyways, I really like this game. I can't remember the last time I spent so many hours in just one game
I'm also about 103 hours in and getting ready to beat the final boss. While I do like the game, I feel that it's TOO long for my tastes especially since the gameplay is mostly about making selections from a menu and reading/listening to dialogue. Persona 4 took me about 70-80 hours for one playthrough if I remember correctly and I didn't feel like that game was dragging things out like I do with P5.

Well yes ofc you have to plan things out. It defeats the whole purpose of a time management system if you don't need to do that
You said everything not just confidants in your post. Anywho The problem with planning things out is that you need to know the wheres and whens to do so. On top of the most efficient ways to increase your characters parameters.

How can this game come out six years after vanilla MvC3 and look worse in every regard? Everyone looks like a plastic toy, and the animations are stiffer than the ones in the mobile game. The game is five months away from release, but it's reassuring to know that they already have six DLC characters planned.

Unbelievable.

Yup, just add me #Vinn1744. I haven't played it in ages but for free skin why not.

I didn't care for the way MvC3 looked either, even when that was new. I miss the old 2D animation, especially since the '90s superhero designs were so much better than the current ones (like Captain America and Iron Man). But there's no way Capcom will ever go back to that. MvC2 forever.

Surprised Spider-Man hasn't been shown yet...

yeah it's always some god who wants to exert control over humanity. I just didn't expect that god to be fucking Igor who had been guiding you towards rehabilitation this entire time!

You can't use it on Video Games.

And where the hell are the X-men?
Ever since Disney acquired the Marvel license, they've been putting restrictions on what characters can be used. X-Men are one of those cannot be used anymore since the license is owned by Fox. Same goes for Fantastic Four. Any upcoming games won't have them since they are trying to distance themselves away from properties not owned by them and will just focus on the ones they have.

So I finished persona 5. 98 hours of playtime. Not sure how it stacks up to my 70 hours in p3 and 60 hours in p4 since those don't include time lost to death while p5 does include it in the save. Did not max all the confidants, I went after fortune and temperance way too late to do that. I'll probably jump back in on merciless difficulty soon, clean up all the stuff I missed.

Oh and I'll also mention that Tokyo mirage sessions is still the pinnacle of SMT battle gameplay. It loses in all other respect to p5 though.

The persona games don't need to be played in order do they? All this buzz has got me really interested in playing 5 even though 3&4 are still on my backlog (shame on me).

I could play them in order but I'm worried about getting burned out, and it's really daunting considering they're like 60-100 hours long each.

What to do.....

Also, just finished Nier Automata and it was amazing.

No. While there are nods/references to past games, they are completely stand alone to each other until a Crossover Fighting Game happens. (Arena/Ultimax/Q) :p

You can play Persona 5 without a problem.

In order not needed. For example, I, fairly green when it came to JRPGs, started P3, got about halfway in and petered out. Played all of P4 Golden (multiple times) then went back to P3 Portable. I don't think that playing through P4G in any way affected my enjoyment of P3P.

The only caveat that I would give is that P3P, P4G, and P5 have some 'quality of life' improvements that are lacking in P3, P3:FES, and vanilla P4. If you play P5 and then go back to those, you might have some slight gameplay frustrations, but story-wise, you'll be fine. If the personas in your backlog are P3P and P4G, you'll have no problem whatsoever.

Damn, I won't even bother playing it if I can't play as my favorites (the xmen). I remember playing the arcade versions and playing as wolverine and cyclops I think.

I am interested in seeing Dante though, hopefully it's the real dante

Just watched the MvC Ultimate gameplay clips and holy crap is that game ugly. Graphics do not make the game but coming from a series that has had pretty excellent art and assets that is a bitter pill to swallow.

Woke up this morning, first thing I thought about again was Ike.  I dreamt of Ike while I was sleeping.  Am I going gay?

Dreams of Fury 3 plus maybe Renewel 3 'B' skill on an all-counter defense team.  =P~

I agree wow! the game is looking disgustingly ugly.

Worse than UMVC3 and sadder since this is supposed to be ps4 quality.

I also hate that it looks like its going to play exactly like UMC3, easy air combo button (x); Chris, strider and hulk all have the same move sets and animations. Besides infinity stones and 2v2 i see no difference.

Also, Ultron is literally Wesker/Iron Man reskinned, same moves and animations.

What a Huge let down.....Gonna wait for the inevitable SFV level backlash and $20 price point.

This. I completely agree about the length of the game. I love it so much, but at the same time there are a few instances where I was like 'Ok, I should be done now right?' then the game is like, 'Nope, here's another palace or Mementos area'.

That's probably my only major complaint about the game.

I feel like almost all Unreal Engine games have a same-y sort of gross look to them, and it's especially there in MvC Infinite (but the art does look a bit off, too). I think the Neptunia game on UE4 looks pretty good though, actually, which is weird since I really do seem to dislike nearly all other UE4 game graphics.

I have a feel complaint the game about the as well, the game feeling long is one of them, but that's mostly because there are areas where they really could have sped things up. Compared to previous entries they have really streamlined the battle system and persona fusion, and even persona collection I would say to great effect.
They could have on the daily life stuff. For example as draekon keeps mentioning, the nights where you can nothing but sleep you could just be put straight to bed, when you level up multiple social stats it does take a while when it has to do each one individually..., speeding through repeat activities like studying at the diner, being able to check if you can level up a confidante without having to talk/go to them(having the texts tell you this sometimes was a good halfway step on this)
Doesnt sound like much but i think it would really add up over the course of the game.

P5 had insurmountable levels of hype is the problem.  Is it perfect? No.  It's not revolutionary either.  But it's a Persona game that's true to it's roots.  It improves on it's predecessors in most ways, the dungeons being the most important part.  We have so few JRPGs on PS4 that I die for new releases like P5.  I just hope that they can get P6 out in a timely fashion possibly 2-3 years from now because it shouldn't take this long for the development cycle of a game of this caliber.

The game is a solid 9.

I actually want to know why I can't pay money to fuse Persona in my compendium that aren't in my current persona inventory. Pretty sure that was a feature of Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse which was the last Megaten game I went through prior to Persona 5. I was really disappointed to find out that I have to make a bunch of room, go to my collection and buy what I needed. Then move back through menus and fuse them. Then repeat the process until I get what I want ultimately at the end of this long tedious process just like the older Megaten games. It's not particularly enjoyable when you could cut that tedium time down significantly.

Hype didn't bother me. Hell, it doesn't even come close to my hype levels for Trails in the Sky the 3rd that releases next week. For me it's an 8/10 with a bunch of issues that I was hoping would be improved. Granted some of it is just because culturally Japan is very different than the west.

I didn't realize til 40 hours in, but the map tells you this. The card is either blue, blue + "up", or greyed out.
Was just about to post this. If you press square on the map screen it'll tell you exactly who's available at each of the locations that day and whether their rank will actually go up or not. I don't think the game even tells you about it, didn't find out about it till like half way through the game.

Actually, I advise against playing the older Persona games if you want to give P5 a try. Mainly because they will seem dated, and it'll be a lot of the same battles again and again and you'll tire of it easily. Also, I mentioned this before but I played P4 right after I beat P3 and I hated it. The biggest reason I because I really missed my old teammates in P3, and hated the ones in P4. It'll be hard to let go of older characters and get attached to new ones after spending a hundred hours with them.

Just watched the MvC Ultimate gameplay clips and holy crap is that game ugly.
In the words of IFC Yipes, that game is hot ca ca. Seriously, look at Chun Li's face... Looks like the old man in the 6 flags commercials. There's a rumor X-men characters will be DLC through just to get the season pass to sell. At least the gameplay looks similar to MvC3 (a little too similar) but so much simplified with no assists, only delayed hyper combos and tag outs.

It's literally in the tutorial like 3 hours into the game. The thing is, the game is just so big that people tend to skim over things. A lot of the small details people nitpick at are actually solved, or there is a good reason it's in place.

Not even close to beating the game but 9.5/10 to me so far. It has flaws, but more than makes up for it by doing what it does so well. Also the most stylish game I've ever played.

Lol, I must've sped through that tutorial. I remember the first part of it, just don't remember it saying anything about pressing square. Looks like I'm not the only one who missed that info at the beginning though.

Yeah I would still rate it the game like a 9.5. May bump it to a 10 depending on how much more fun a merciless run is. Finishing the game at level 75, I didn't get a chance to fuse the most powerful personas! Plus turns out the super boss is only available in NG+

The story and writing is great, the characters are great, the combat is great. What more can I ask from an rpg.

Also, is it just me or is the P5 protag the most handsome one yet...?

Assuming you took that picture today or yesterday we're on the same part of the game, niice

Also I made a new avatar, it's pretty silly - it's MAGAman X

Took everything that made Battlefield 1 great, threw it in the trash, dropped two nukes on it and remade it to be the newer greatest game of all time. It's like Activision saw what EA did with their World War game and decided to make that but double the amount of everything (hence the subtle name WWII), double the guns, double the explosions, double the fight for freedom. This game is truly the Donald Trump of Call of Duty in that just like America it's becoming great again and that is how it should always be.

This post is inspired by WhoKnows Top 5 Games of All Time

It's a 10 for me, assuming that "10" means that a game is at the absolute top level of what's been released, not necessarily flawless. I've yet to find a game that is completely flawless.
