I will say this much, virtual game cards are stupid. I hope this doesn't become a trend, next thing you know we will have to load our digital movies onto only 1 tv in our house, then have to go turn a tv on in a different room to unload a movie from that tv to move it to another one. stupid.

Anyone else using a Switch 1 pro controller and constantly forgetting it won't turn on the Switch 2 from holding down the home button?

I admit fully this was one of the major reasons I bought a Pro 2 at launch. I wasn't going to be satisfied with Joycon 2's in a grip or having to get up to push a power button. My regular pro's can become players 2/3/4.

Switch 1 to Switch 2 is like getting a new phone. Bigger screen, faster, interface is the same. You’re mostly future proofing for a few more years.

Yeah, and I tend not to get a new phone until mine completely stops working, which explains my disinterest in the switch 2 I guess.

I’ve been watching mario kart world content to jumpstart some sort of hype for this game, but it’s not working. Absolutely crazy that there are no 3 lap races except in private lobbies. 2/3 of the game is just driving down over 100 straight, wide highways to get to the actual tracks, which are just one lap because of all the time you waste getting to them in the first place. Why would anyone on the dev team ok this, someone help me understand.

Dev team: it's not great like this. We need more time.
Manager: are you sure? It's due and we are giving you no extra compensation to get it done "the right way" plus you have lots of other tasks we are piling on you.
Dev team: uh...

Blame managers. Don't blame the dev team.

Sure, but it seems they spent a lot of those years of development on those vast empty highways and infinite amounts of cosmetics and stickers. So i dunno what the point of all that effort was. Multi-lap races are kind of a staple of the racing genre, like combos in a fighting game or jumping in a platformer. At least someone should’ve really understood that if they’re working on the best-selling racing series of all time.

As someone who loved Burnout 3 and hates Burnout Paradise. This is what I thought would happen if they gave Mario Kart the open world treatment. A bunch of useless driving to go do what you actually want to do.

Received the console that Target delivered late. Compared the screen to the preorder I picked up from gs. They were close in quality with one looking very slightly better, so that's the one I will keep and use. System transfer was quick. Complaints about the dock's flimsiness are silly - that mainly applies to the door flap and that sucked just as much v1-oled.

Tried out a handful of games. My favorite jrpgs look nice in hdr (FINALLY). Rune Factory 5 is still unplayable garbage - needs a patch that is unlikely to happen.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 didn't impress me too much.. no big changes to resolution and draw distances while exploring. The difference here might have to do more with fps drops being addressed, we shall see.

Echoes of Wisdom shows very welcome improvement. Higher resolution and superior frame rate is immediately obvious.

The shocking moment was starting up Pokemon Violet. Looks and feels like a complete different game. Well done on this one.

Not sure who you are watching but there's so much wrong with your post I don't really know where to start... this reminds me of the virtual game card stuff and everyone posting to be first and getting the details completely wrong.

  • There are 3 lap races outside of private lobbies. I played some offline with my son as well as online. I also played some races that were 8 segments linked together.
  • I never played a single race that was driving straight for more than a couple seconds. I was using the drift button CONSTANTLY there were so many curves and tight corners. Maybe there are some races I'll get to that will have this but after a few hours ... no such thing.
  • Every mission I played involved using the full 3D space. None were remotely straight.
One involved driving into a semi-truck to drive it and plow through some road blocks and then drive into large helicopter and fly to near the finish ... another, I rode this vine plant as it grew up and into the sky to a platform and then another to a final platform with a big finish line ring. There was a third one where I drove through traffic. A fourth where i was driving around an open park area collecting red coins.
  • You don't have to use the open world to go to races, you pull up a map and can click on anything. Or from the main menu you can just select race cups like any other mario kart game and play a group of races. The open world is more of a playground.
So making you understand, I'm not following youtubers or whatever ... but it sounds like people are dumb and hit the plus button to go into the open world and haven't explored the menus or the built in map and are doing everything the hardest way possible. Maybe they wanted to be "first" to showing stuff off instead of playing the game for the joy of playing a game?

Anyway, going to go have dinner and then play some more Mario Kart World.

I went to my FLGS and someone had their Switch 2 there hooked up to the big screen.

Smash ran smooth. TotK is actually playable now (IMO) and Pokemon S/V is as they say, a big improvement.

Unless there's a setting we missed, the thing pauses downloading while playing games, so I left before MKW was ready.

I'm not really excited how it feels. I've had slim handhelds before like it, being one of those who gets the Chinese retro handhelds. I prefer built in ergonomics (larger grips).

I don't like the way the shell feels, either.

Both would be replaced with a third party Joycon set. Seems like 8BitDo Ultimate controllers can't sync with it, either. Bummer.

The eShop is actually much more user friendly now. Still behind the times by a mile, but at least it doesn't chug and stutter!

Most of us agreed, even the owner, that it's just a bigger, faster Switch. If that doesn't immediately tickle your fancy to spend five bills, then probably wait.

They were all bummed when they went to the GC games and didn't see Pokemon Colosseum or Gale of Darkness available.

I can most definitely wait. My urge is in the "play Zelda at 60FPS and it's new and shiny." I'll look forward to hopefully more games later this year.

The 8bitdo controllers just need to be updated

Does anyone know whether MKW bundle includes a code or a straight download? Someone is selling MKW codes from the bundle and I’m confused. I’d always thought it was a game you just downloaded when you turned on your switch 2 for the first time.

It's a code.

Edit: Preordered the bundle from Best Buy in the US. Box has a sticker on it.

Careful, that's from a different region. As I understand it, USA DID NOT get a code. You just download the game straight from the eshop. I saw it happen during Gamexplain stream. Andre is in Texas and when going to the eshop, it popped up that he can download MKW. Other countries got a code. It's confusing but this is Nintendo after all. I don't think other countries codes work but I don't know for sure.

Depends on the box it seems apparently? If it's literally a separate Mario Kart sticker put on the box, then it's probably a code.

If the Mario Kart art is a part of the actual box art, then it'll be attached to the console itself.

I want to get the Switch 2 system that has Mario Kart Printed on the front of box.. not the Large circle sticker.. Hopefully someone can tell me what's a way to do that??

I got a code. Here in the US. With a US bundle.

Okay so it's random even in the USA. My point still stands though. You need to make sure it's a USA code. Do codes from Australia or Europe or Japan work in the USA? I have no idea. I haven't been keeping track of it.
Maybe Andre had already put his code in on the website like I did.

No. That's what the confusion was about on the video. He was having trouble getting Mario Kart to download. Every time he would go into the eShop it would tell him that Mario Kart world is available to download. He went to download it but a message popped up that said it wasn't available yet.

I kept telling him that it wasn't available until 12:00 a.m. pst. Other people in the chat were telling him that he needs to put a code in. He kept asking what code are you talking about? There was never any code. He went and got the box and was looking inside the box and couldn't find any code. He said over and over mine does not have a code. Here is proof

Unless Nintendo changed their account systems... non-US codes won't work with a US account, but you can change your account to another region, apply the code, then switch your account back to US.

I don't think the vast majority of Mario Kart World codes being sold on US websites are for non-US games, though... Nintendo appears to have converted a LOT of "stand alone" Switch 2 system into bundles by adding a sticker to the box and putting a code slip inside.

It's such a relief that we have Freeze Time here to make sure we know about any possible negative news regarding the Switch 2.

My US MKW bundle also came with a US code that I used to download the game from the US servers to my console in the US. My box was one with the sticker on it, which seems to be the one that comes with a code. MKW is so good too, graphics are excellent and I'm loving the Free Roam mode, this map is so big, it's wild.

How are people here liking the fact Nintendo took away strategy by making your item auto drag behind you? Now anyone behind you can see your item and not use their shell against you. It also means that if you get hit by a blue shell, you lose that item. From what other people are posting, you can't turn this off. Nintendo has to fix this with a patch. It's lame that they took away this strategy.

I’ve liked reading your MKW impressions here so far and this one too gives me hope. I will say though, there are opinions everywhere about the “intermission” sections between tracks that are a lot harsher than yours. There are just 32 tracks in the game, but they don’t even make up a majority of people’s playtimes. Whole bunch of driving to get to the actual meat of the game. Worst of all, the public online lobbies only very rarely offer the regular tracks for selection as multi-lap versions. This is a big deal for me as like 98% of my hundreds of hours playing MK8 was spent in the online mode, and I am ultimately just interested in racing on actual circuits against people online and not dicking around in the open world. Just watching people waste time on the highway sections that you are forced to drive on in between tracks is dull. The fact that these mindless highway segments show up in the online mode alongside 1-lap versions of the actual tracks is just incredibly disappointing. I wouldn’t doubt that Nintendo will someday offer some sort of “classic” online lobby in a future update that just offers the core 32 tracks for selection in their entirety and with the proper amount of laps, alongside stuff like 200cc and item customization, but right now the online mode seems terrible.

There’s been indications that the Switch 2 is the best launch in history with 3 million units sold in 24 hours, but Freeze time will definitely find a way to make that bad news or something.

I bet it will be something like "Well that is just because of all the scalpers and bots, no REAL people bought one!".

I mean you could look at the numbers a different way and say only 0.2% of the Switch install base were champing at the bit to get their hands on the Switch 2, and they’re still available in retailers so it’s not like people just can’t get them.

I also want to say how refreshing it is to see Freeze Time not take it personally for Nintendo cracking down on the gamesharing that wasn't intended, like what he does with his "friend", It's users like him that we have to thank for virtual game cards.

I am going to go out shopping at Costco today. If I see a NS2 in the store I will pick it up. Never got an email from Nintendo to preorder which kind of annoys me considering how much I have purchased from them over the years.
Good luck i ran by Costco, best buy, Walmart, gamestop and target since there all fairly close by yesterday. Nada lol yet according to the NVC group on Facebook people are just walking in and finding them no problem. Hopefully you score

The lobby online is just a playground while you wait for the next race to start. You can drive around, maybe find a food bag to get a new transformation/outfit for your character or just sit there and wait around for the next race to start. If you already raced, they put you in ten lobby for the track last finished and the countdown starts for the next race.

I playedsingle player GP last night. Cleared gold on the first two sets of tracks and just finished the third on 150cc. unlocked Daisy, Rosalina, and another character... as well as a bunch of karts and alt versions of characters. Every single race was 3 laps or a multi segment (I think most were 8 segments) race.

Contrary it's not surprising in that allotment was much higher than previous launches. They are meeting demand upfront so the more important metric here is sales over time. Claiming most successful in 24 hours is a no shit sherlock statement under those conditions but if sales fall off a cliff immediately after then it will track like a normal release.

I'd also be curious to see breakdown by territory; just how much did price influence sales.

I ended up with 2 extra systems, 1 from the Nintendo invite that I got on release day, that is the one I am using, 1 from Target that was stuck in preparing to ship like everyone else but it actually came in yesterday, and one from Costco that I ordered on release night just in case mine got delayed or canceled. I think I will post them on marketplace for exactly what I paid and save someone in my area the hassle and they can have it on the weekend, if it doesn't sell I can just return it.

I doubt most of you will even notice. I'm still waiting for that digital foundry video.

There is also this

Damn, I’m glad I got on here to read how much Mario Kart World sucks. I was up until 2am last night having a blast playing it with a grin on my face because of how good it looks but obviously I must be stupid or something. My son was up til 1am playing Mario Kart World on his Switch 2 also, I better take his away and show him a game that all of YouTube tells me is great.

My son got the bundle with the sticker, so his had a Mario kart code in the box from Walmart. I got the one with the graphic printed on the box from Best Buy so mine was redeemed once I logged into the E Shop.

Yes this was intended. If it wasn't intended, there wouldn't have been any primary and secondary option. It also would have restricted you to be on the same Wi-Fi like streaming services are now doing. They just took it away with these new virtual game cards.

This guy managed to win the Target lottery

Some CSR must have accidentally typed $250 instead of $25. It is shocking that the automated system let that go through, so that person must have been a manager to have the clearance to enter credit amounts without maximums in place. They will likely be fired at the end of the week/month when they reconcile how much credit each rep granted over the time period, or I guess Target could pull the recording of the phone call and later correct the amount to the agreed on amount (as is probably allowed in the terms and conditions).
