So, basically, you think that when you're making some sort of media, either a prequel or a sequel, it should be completely different from the movie it's prequeling/sequeling?! Yeah, that makes sense. Fellowship of the Ring? Ok, that's good. Two towers? Should have had dinosaurs and space ships. Return of the King? Should have been a musical with Hitler and talking cartoon animals. After all, we wouldn't want them being like the first movie!!

Like I said before, dumbass.
Lord of the Rings doesnt even fall into the same thing we are talking about.

A trilogy is just an extend story you fucking idiot, that they purposely made in order by all the same people. Lord of the Rings could be 1 10 hour movie.

Are you serious...that is what you used as an example? You just compared a movie prequel made by completely different people 20 years apart containing virtually (from the trailers) all the exact same scenes while adding new elements that were never introduced to the original story.

That was so stupid that you must have read that on another page and thought it made sense and posted here.
How would you rather it look/feel then? The story is only suppose to be about 2-3 days before what happens in the 1982 version so of course the setting and materials they use are going to be very similar to the Americans.
In his version, the aliens infect a bunch of little kids, and it's up to one lone Jamaican to trip them to death in parking lots.

I can't...I just can't take it.

Who cares who makes it or when it's made? It's cannon. It takes place in the same time-frame within the actual movies...ohhhh god why am I even bothering?

Yes...a trilogy is an extended story...unlike prequels and sequels! They certainly DO NOT extended the story.

Fixed

 Oh yeah, forgot that part.

I'm sorry soodmeg. While I agree with your base point that it's possible that this movie might be terrible, your reasoning why it might be is just ridiculous. If there's one thing that's going to sink this movie, it's just going to be the usual cheesy writing, bad acting and crappy CGI effects. It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that.

You are confusing what I mean by similar. Similar is fine but there are millions of ways to tell a story. For example..Blowtorches.

Blowtorches are an iconic plot devices from the 82 version. There is no real reason to have them in your prequel. (thats why I asked about standard issue equipment..I doubt that everyone how went to the arctic had blowtorches) you could find a different method of portraying the need for fire than having an actual blowtorch which is clearly iconic from the 82 version.

Its not a hard concept to understand.

The more iconic things you use the more it seems like a remake then an original story inspired from. If you are going to make a prequel fine...even call it the same name but the more images, shots, dialogue, etc that are directly tied to the first one the more it seems like a remake than a completely different movie.

Some people view these as "odes to" but I view them as lazy rip offs. You already named it after the original...thats ode enough. The only thing that has to be roughly the same is the feeling that the movie portrays...like paranoia, distrust, etc etc. There are million of ways to show these things without using anything that is remotely similar to the original aside from setting.

I never said everything has to be outrageously different.

One last note, I havent seen it this is all pre release opinion and I said that. Hell they might do everything right for all I know...I am just going off the trailer....as I have also said.
