2001: A Last Movie You Saw Odyssey
Have you seen them before? Please say yes. I don't know if I can tolerate your existence if you say no.
Well, I haven't seen Boondock Saints. And I have seen Pulp Fiction, but not all at once. I've seen this piece here and that piece there, and it equals the whole movie. So, I guess you can't tolerate me then. Too bad, because I know the key to your brain!

Well, Boondock isn't too important, but you really should watch Pulp in one sitting. A minimum of 20 times.
Check the list.
Well, at least you know you have a problem.

By the way, nice page design.

I don't agree with the 20 time minimum. Where did you come up with such a number? Hmm... you made me think... we should all come up with lists of what movies that others should see so that we can tolerate their existence...
Check the list.
Eh, probably want to strike All the President's men off your list, you might as well just read the book as the movie strips the investigation down to a few major bullet pointsso unless you have prior knowlege of the conspiracy you really won't know WTF is going on.

You do remember the thread I made about the list, don't you? I should bump that up to get some more movies to add. I don't even think anyone suggested Shaolin Soccer.

I agree, if anyone hasn't at least watched the first 9 minutes of Serenity via the link in my sig, I can't tolerate their existence
Being John Malkovich.

fucking SUCKED.
I didn't like it either. I figured it would be good since it had Cusack and Malkovich, but I was wrong.

Well, honestly it was pretty arbitrary. I don't think I've even seen it 20 times. Maybe 10.

I'll start working on a list ... though maybe we should limit it to 20 titles or so. I wouldn't want modium or zman to put something up that will take me the rest of my life to finish.

Of course.

EDIT: 20 isn't going to be enough ... looking at Frisky's list I see 30+ that are "must-see" in my book, not counting the ones already crossed off.

Maybe you should hold off on that until you catch up with the current list.
I didn't like it either. I figured it would be good since it had Cusack and Malkovich, but I was wrong.
Man, seriously. I only kept it going because I thought we were going to see some Maxine tit, but I kinda part-way fell asleep so I dunno if I missed it or not.

Tomorrow, using that MVP at Hollywood, I think i'll pick up Pi, Magnolia and Requiem for a Dream. Never seen any of the three.

Nope, you should expect a 2 liter of Diet coke, filled with pieces of shrapnel and a container of Mentos breath mints rigged to a motion sensor for release, on your door step in a day or two.

 Might as well keep adding so that when I see whatever's not on their yet, then I can cross it off and make the list look better. I've got 6 waiting to be watched so I can cross them off. :)

I don't think there was any nudity in the movie.

I really enjoyed Magnolia. I only saw the second half of it, and I loved that, so I'm guessing that the first part is equally good. Haven't seen Pi or Requiem, though.

Take your best shot. It won't work. Thanks for the Diet Coke and the mints, I wanted a drink and some mints and now I don't have to go to the store. ;)

I shall add Empire of the Sun and Ghost world to my netflix queue. But know this if I feel unsatisfied I shall come back here and taunt you, possibly for putting American History X about Dr. Strangelove, although for that I'm sure you'll have to answer to coke.

You do realize it's in alphabetical order, not order of preference, or Subbie's preferences are strangely weird.

Il Mare

Usually it be really hard for me to sit down and watch a slow paced movie....but man I thought this movie was great. I can't believe they're doin a hollywood american remake with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. I have a feeling it might suck.

Aguirre, the Wrath of God

You know, I think I liked it even more than the first time I saw it. Maybe that's because it's a hypnotic masterpiece, with some stunning visuals, great music, a frighteningly good performance from Kinski, and quite possibly the best closing shot ever.
Or maybe it's because I own it now :D
Hooray for the Herzog/Kinski collection!

High Tension, good suspenseful, gory flick...ending is a bit of a stretch. Just make sure you watch the unrated cut. The extra 45 second makes ALL the difference

Went to the 80s Fantasy Movie Theme Night yesterday and saw:

Labyrinth - Besides the disturbing bulge that David Bowie had, it was a good movie.
Princess Bride - Funny movie and I always love to see Carl Elwes.
The Dark Crystal - I thought this was kind of decent, nothing that great.

Afterwards I watched the Boondock Saints, pretty good movie.

Saw "A History of Violence" last night. I didn't think my wife would like it due to the graphic violence, but she said she thought it was good.

Oldboy

Great film, disturbing, kinda depressing, but strangely beautiful.
Manhattan

Another good Woody Allen film.
Good? GOOD?!? Try freaking great! ;)
Eh. You hated Sin City, what do you know?

coincidentally, 2001 space odyssey is the last movie ive seen, it was terrible

:hot: :applause: :hot: :applause:

Damn, they're coming from all sides.
Heh. Mine was just a gentle ribbing though.

I think 2001 is probably the most-hated masterpiece ever made, simply because it's a challenge to watch. I mean, the first time I saw it was on a pan & scan VHS tape when I was probably 12 or 13, and not surprisingly, I hated it. Even the second time I saw it, a few years later, I thought it was pretty good, but remembered saying that it could have lost about an hour and would have been even better. So, the first viewing is always the toughest, because it's so different and so challenging, its stature is so intimidating.

While it's understandable that most people see it and absolutely loathe it, it's still a shame that the same people don't try it again with a completely open mind and let it simply wash over them. But, hey, don't matter much to me. Zman, on the other hand...

I think the only reason someone would "like" 2001 is to appear artsy (i beleive people like radiohead for this same reason). 2001 is a damn bore-fest. Kubrick stretched the movie out waaaayyyy too long. The 15 minute musical overtures with nothing but shots of space? Come on no one enjoyed those. There were about 20 minutes of the film that actually had something to do with a plot. It's just not a good movie, a big oops in kubrick's book.

Wait wait wait. You're telling me there was a plot?

I've only seen it once, and I was barely paying attention half the time. I didn't hate it, but I didn't see anything there to rewatch.

Oh, and Radiohead is awesome.

Most people, they want entertainment, they want a traditional plot, they want their movie to think for them. And while it might sound like an insult, it's not, it's just the truth, for better or for worse. It's the same with any other form of art, some people just want a painting that looks pretty, while others might want something that they can stare at, become absorbed in, think about, something that inspires them emotionally. It's just a matter of what people want from art, be it music, paintings or film.

It sounds like you've already made up your decision, but if you want an interesting read, Ebert's Great Movies article on 2001 really puts a lot of things in perspective, and explains why it's considered so great. But like I said, if you've already made your decision, then it'd just be a waste of time, heh.

Zman seems to have disappeared off the face of the planet. I'm sure he'd be able to argue this far better than I, since he's not only smarter, but likes 2001 way more than I do. :hot:

Hey, there's nothing wrong with Garden State. Ok, maybe it's a bit heavy handed & obvious, but it's got Natalie. That more than makes up for any shortcomings.

All that bugged me when I saw it was the ending. I kept sitting there going "They're not gonna go for the corny cop-out, they're not, they're not..." And sure enough, they did!

I bought it at Blockbuster, finally, but still haven't given it another viewing after the theatrical run, heh.

The reason I watched the movie in the first place was for my film class, so I understand a lot of people like to ponder the deeper meaning of 2001. I just would rather watch spongebob the movie.

The first nine minutes of Serenity, courtesy of guardian_owl. I will definitely be seeing this tomorrow afternoon. :D
