2008-09 NHL Thread - Stanley Cup Finals begin May 30!!!

all things considered i think the series is pretty even so far. yes the wings are up 2-0, but 4 of their 6 goals have been "flukey", not your typical goals. pittsburgh has been able to dominate parts of the games, i think (hope) we see a different series in games 3 and 4. remember the series doesnt start until the home team loses.

Thats the fastest the NHL has ever made a descion regarding a suspension. They had it announced before the Wings post game was over. For a minute I thought Malkin was going to try to do an impression of Alex Semin  Nothing Malkin did deserved a suspension.
LOL @ Malkin vs. Zetterberg.

From TSN:

"Malkin was given an instigator penalty for the incident, but the NHL has rescinded the penalty and he will not be suspended for Game 3.

"The intent of the rule is pretty obvious - was the action premeditated, was it sending a message," explained NHL on TSN's Bob McKenzie following the game. "Malkin was on the ice trying to score a goal at the end of the game. This one was born more out of frustration, then it was the Penguins trying to orchestrate some late game shenanigans, that is what the rule was put in place for and that is why the NHL reserves the right to rescind the rule if they feel the spirit of the rule is not being violated."
As long as Fleury keeps letting everything Abdelkader tosses his way into the net, it's hard to call those flukes.

Datysuk is probably out for Game 3. Guesses on how badly broken his foot is?

MAF has made this series boring to watch.

About Datysuk ... worse than their willing to say.

Some funnies on an off day.

TC, you figured it out. malkin and crosby need to grow mullets. thats why jagr and lemiuex were so good, it was the magic mullet power.

Just go back from Detroit after going to games one and two and a couple of things I noticed.

1. Pens could not get a break, 3 posts alone in Game 2.

2. The NHL should try to have all teams have the same bounce off of the boards. As soon as I noticed in pre-game how much the puck bounced off the boards I mentioned to my brother that MAF was going to let one in of a bad board bounce and would you know it he let two in that way.

3. They played about even with the Wings for long stretches but the Wings D and third/fouth line has outplayed the Pens.

4. Letting Zetterberg cover the puck in the crease in both games with no call was total BS.

5. The Wings just know how to interfere and hook just enough were it wont be called plus it seems the refs have pretty much put their whitsles away anyway. And without the power play you take alot of sting out of the Pens offense.

6. Jordan Staal is worthless they need to make sure he cant get into the mini-bar in his room when they are on the road. The dumbfounded look on his face as the puck bounced in the air before the Wings third goal in game one was priceless.

I just want to add my

BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

to hossa!

I kinda like having no refs its great. Pens just need to start interfering and hooking too. Then it will all be good.

part of me says yes and part of me says no. the no part says, its the home teams ice, they comply to the size of the rink already and if the home team knows their own area better so what. and look at something like baseball parks, they are all a little unique. the yes part says, the nhl already regulates the size of rinks, sticks, pads, etc, so why not have all the boards "bounce" the same. in either case im sure its something thats very very low down the NHLs list of priorities.

Nah it was a close game. Could have gone either way. Few lazy clears but well played otherwise. They could use Datsyuk. Hell then again who couldn't, but you play with who you got.

HUGE win for the Pens. They may have been outplayed again, but this time it was close enough for them to pull it out. I honestly have no idea what to expect come Thursday, but I'm looking forward to it.
If the Wings stay out of the box next game I don't see how they can lose.
If your a Wings fan I cant see how you can complain about penalties they are only getting called for about half of them. The refs in this series have been a joke. When the Wings play the 4-1 trap they always interfere with the first forward going in just enough for their one D-man back to get the puck. It's hard to see on TV all the time because the camera is following the puck, but take it from someone its been to all 3 games live. Now in all 82 regular season games thats a penalty every time and now because its the SCF and its Detroit they allow it. I am not saying the Pens are not doing thing that are going uncalled but the Wings seem to get away with alot more than the Pens.

Datsyuk answered a few questions today. :D

Datsyuk on having to sit out: "Oh, I tell you, this is not fun to watch. I take in lots of beer."

Datsyuk on whether he might play wing in Game 4: "I think at wing, center, defenseman, I want to play so bad."

Datsyuk on how long he'd like to play in Game 4: "The game is 60 minutes. I hope to play 60 minutes. But we make a decision tomorrow morning."

Most Wings fans I know say the exact opposite.

@ajh2298
Don't have a problem with the refs too much at all. I'm pretty calm about officiating unless it is truly bad.
As for game 4. Sucks that we lost. Saw the frustration at the end too which is unfortunate but that won't matter once game 5 begins. Hossa and Datsyuk (assuming he plays) will need to contribute points.
Just glad the Pens are making this series more interesting now. So we'll at least see six games again.
Yes. This is some top-shelf hockey. I'm rooting for the wings, but both teams are too good.

just like is said after the wings went up 2-0.

a series doesnt start until the home team loses. this is just a reset. the game saturday is going to be the biggest game of the series. if the pens win i think they have it locked up. if the wings win i think they have it locked up.

The announcers last night made a mention that the Penguins bench could have protested for a goal when the one guy (sorry, not enough coffee) was taken down by a hook late in the game, and the RW had pulled Osgood.

1) Did I hear that right?
2) So you can score in hockey without actually scoring?
3) Any other circumstances like that?

If it would have been called as a penalty shot... Bill McCreary could have given Kunitz an automatic goal, as there was no goalie, giving him a penalty shot at an empty net would be pointless so it would be called an automatic goal, but since it was just called a minor penalty it just gets a power play.

Edit: Oh, and GO PENS!!!!

Our Power Play is a beast tonight.

Pens were blown out with 11 left to go in the second. The 5-0 is just icingo n the cake. :D
I know they say a series isn't over till the home team loses but, sorry to say, I think the Penguins are done after that beating.
I don't know, it really depends on the Wings' ability to stay hungry after dishing out this beating. If they think they can coast through this next game, they're done.

I have to say, I almost want it to go to 7 so the wings can win it at home, but cutting too close. They need to clench this as soon as possible. If they let the pens in a little, the whole things gone.

that was brutal. im sure well see a different team for game six, much like we saw with games 3 & 4. but even if the pens can get it to 7 games they have just been dominated in detroit.

These kind of games always seem to happen after one too many comments from the opposing team about how "old" the Red Wings players are.

If the Penguins take the next two games, then it would be considered a major upset.

I would like to see the series to go seven games and someone (Wing or Pen) win Game 7 with an overtime goal.

This game reminded me of the game against the Hawks where everybody on the team was getting pissed after the score got out of control. Fun night for a Wings fan though.

This face from Saturday night tells you everything you need to know about game 5.

Game 5 was just like the game where Franzen tore out Kane's mouthguard and threw it on the floor.

Break their strategy...and then break their spirits.

Haha. I noticed Bettman too. I really don't think he has anything against the Wings but it's good fun to pretend he hates us. That way we can complain about the refs giving games to the Pens and whatnot. I enjoy throwing some dirt onto the other team while watching the games.

I hear ya Nifty. He obviously wasn't pleased to see as he put it "the model franchise" featuring the face of the NHL getting blown out and acting like children on national TV.

Has anybody in Detroit ever checked to see if Gordie Howe has been replaced by a Terminator T-800 from the future set to destroy mankind by choking all the children?

Haha. I remember when Crosby slashed Zetterberg, and my buddy and I were watching, and I was like "He's going to the penalty box for that, and so are a few other Pens before the game is over."

He was like, "What for?"

and I just said "Crying on TV."
My, my, my. Those people lambasting Pittsburgh seem to have quickly forgotten how dirty Detroit was during game 4, don't they?
Maltby chopped Cindy and Hossa bumped a backup. If you're trying to compare that to the entire last half of game 5 you, well whatever.

Someone should tell the linesmen that.

They've apparently neglected the entire "Interference" portion of the rule book. Go Wings!
