2014 Yardsale thread

I did just get diarrhea, but that always happens with BK. ;)

4-23-14

Most people that know me in real life know that I rarely lie. I swear this story is true and I did get this stuff for free.

long story short. A woman contacted me and let me know she had an old playstation. I told her I would be interested in seeing what she had for sale.

She responded: "I'll go down and see if I can figure out where it is. . . it's yours for the taking - we were going to pitch it. There are 2 joy sticks & a power cord. It worked last time my husband played it but that was years ago"

Me: "I would be interested in it. I live in xxxx, but I could meet you to pick it up."

Her: "Sorry, slow, between working full time and 4 kids, I can't commit to meeting anywhere. If you're ever down by xxxx, I can leave it on the front porch for you."

Then she sends me these pics:

At this point I nearly jizzed my pants and I thought either:

A: someone is trolling me
B: Someone else is going to pick it up off her front porch.
C: It is a set up and I am going to be robbed or
D: It is a cop's house and I will be shot for trespassing

Fortunately for me none of those were true as when I pulled up I saw a bag sitting on her front porch.

Oh and you know that Castlevania SOTN in her pic? Turns out it is still factory sealed!!!!

:whee:

MORE TO COME!!!
Going rates on SotN sealed on Amazon are $100 for GH, $300 for original print run. Congrats!

Ah, interesting. I've used cards and writing things down, but so far neither has really done me any good. I also run a craigslist ad for MAGFest advertising our free pass for a system deal, but don't really get anything out of that either. For the amount of effort it takes me to keep these things up I figure I might as well continue in hopes of it paying off someday.
Would the free pass deal work for someone out of state? Also what systems are eligible?

For those of you that read the thrift store thread, he is the guy that tried to fight me at SAVERS (I'm pretty sure I wrote out that story).
Whoa, didn't see that post. Got a link? Sounds like a fun read. I'm pretty sure I'm the only collector in my area since I've gotten some crazy stuff in the last few months.

I occasionally run an ad saying I buy video games and I mention that I am interested in broken systems, instructions, etc. I won't post the exact ad here because I've already had one douche in my area steal my ad and try to pretend he is me. (People call me by my first name or "The game guy" or if I am at a BB I am known as "The Penny guy" ;) )

He basically copied my ad, added a few sentences, then added a line that says "Yep, I am that guy. The game guy!"

TLDR: Yes she responded to my ad, then I chatted with her on FB (because some people don't like giving out their email addresses, but they are completely fine with others seeing their FB page containing their photos/everything about them. Seems backwards to me, but I try to accommodate people).

PS: This isn't "The Super Lot" and I won't have time to post until after the comic con this weekend (maybe not until the week after that FCBD). But I am also waiting to hear back about more stuff to add to the lot.

PPS: Sorry MasaTFC :whistle2:
Dont tell me your those people who spam saying they buy video games etc on craigslist

nah brah, but the guy who stole my ad is using it on CL. Then he will try to sell a RF adapter for a n64 for $20 on there. 99% of the stuff I find is at garage sales or Word of Mouth. In this case, I had placed an ad to try something new (about 1 month ago using various media) and to see what actually draws/appeals to people. I very rarely check CL because everything is gone within minutes and I can only access it when I am at home (since my smartphone is wifi only). I'm not sure which one of my ads she saw, but I know she contacted me because of an ad. After the comic convention, I am going to see what actually worked (if anything). I should have used a different email for each source, so I could have a count of what worked best. Oh well, if I ever do it again, I'll improve the system. Maybe this was a gift from the universe after all the free info I gave out to people who asked me about their games. ;)

Lousy first day out today. Went to about 12 sales, but a full 4 of them (4 of the 9 I had written down) didn't seem to exist. So either the people got lazy or they were fake ads. Hopefully lazy.

Didn't buy a single thing. Saw games at one sale, but they wanted $5.00 each for PS2 games and $4.00 each for Gamecube games. Mostly junk for both, about 15 for each, and not many sports games, but they just weren't good titles. Almost grabbed GTA Liberty City Stories but missing the manual so I passed at that price. Didn't feel like haggling on one game and I had just heard them soundly reject someone else's attempt at haggling. Maybe if there were a few decent ones I could have bundled up for a decent price but they just had so much junk...

These damn sales that start on Thurs and Fri are killing me! Yard sales haven't really started picking up yet but the few decent ones I've seen so far all started on a Thurs so by Saturday all the good stuff is gone...am I the only human being that works Mon-Fri?! Damn! How are so many people able to even hold or go to yard sales during the week?!

Oh and I want a link to that fight at Savers story too, I missed that one

Consider yourself lucky. I work all weekend. The only time I can go is on Friday. There's a lot more sales on Saturdays, I'd prefer to go out then.

I've been using gsalr.com. You can set it to email you a list every day of yard sales in your area and even have it watch for keywords like SNES, playstation, or whatever.

Where do you guys find most of the yardsales, is it thru craiglist ??
I used to have a good bit of luck on Craigslist, but it seems to have seriously died off in popularity in my town. Granted, that may have to do with the fact that some couple murdered a guy after using an escort ad on Craigslist and dumped his body in our town. The newspaper is still king around here, and I always keep an eye out for signs as there's usually a lot of ones only advertised that way.

Today I went to a street advertised sale less than a mile from my place. There wasn't much in general and no games, but I bought a DVD tower shelf. One of those long thin wire style ones and by Atlantic. I could tell it was from Best Buy by the stickers and saw "WRITE OFF" so I figured parts were missing but the size looked perfect for a little spot I have by my bedroom door. The guy said he'd take $5 for it, so I bought it and then he said he fished it out of the dumpster and never messed with, which I'd already deduced. (The plastic tape on it and lack of damaged print on the cardboard told me he never messed with it)

Turns out, it was missing one bolt, three nuts and one weird plastic nut type thing for attaching the stand to the bottom. I found the bolts and nuts required laying on the floor of my basement and assembled it, ignoring the missing plastic thing. I realize it's big business, but I can't understand how a $38 stand gets thrown in the garbage over what would've cost $2 at a hardware store to fix.

Anyway, I'm happy the shelf lets me catch up on DVDs/Blus and games, although it doesn't give me much room to expand.

Wow seems like a brutal murder

im done with regular yard sales they start on wed or thur here so I never get to go so I wait for the city wide sales in the surrounding little town but nothing good yet

I dont think Id even bother going to yardsales that advertise video games! You know everyone is going to head to those and theres a slim chance youll be first and get anything good. I do best at sales that arent in the paper or on CL. Just drive around and look for them or signs.

Suppose to rain tomorrow and the only ad I really see is that one I posted a few days ago in here about how it as tons of vintage games, 80's & 90's toys, instruments, etc. So that is either fake, reseller, or just gonna be crazy madhouse - so I will skip instead of wasting 15 minutes each way.

So, I am happy, but also kinda pissed. I saw that someone had a console they were selling for $20, but they were holding it for another buyer. The person ended up not coming back, so (I had left my number and) she called me. I picked it up and paid their asking price. Literally 5 minutes after I leave their house I get home and see that they changed their ad to say "everything is 50% off if bought today". It is still a good price for the system, but I think that was shady of her to do that.

Today was a decent day.

Sony STR-DE697 7.1 surround sound receiver. I know it turns on at least. $5

Jd3oXal.jpg

Excuse my ****ing mess. I bought a Rock Band 2 set for Xbox 360 for $20, along with a GBA with Mario Kart SC for $5 and GPS for $5. Can't wait to graduate next week and move out of my dorm -_-

vvNjQZa.jpg

Bought this small tv for $15. Kind of old and doesn't have HDMI, but now I have a decent tv to play my old school games on since my new HDTV doesn't havr red/white/yellow RCA ports.

ZqXtb7m.jpg

Also got this PGA Tour rocking chair for $5 LOL. It's worth a lot apparently.

Also got these camera for $10. Where's the best place to get 35mm film cheap so I can test them?

Pouring rain and 42 degrees outside. Didn't plan on going out but when I woke up there was a sale listed like 5 blocks away that said it had wii and games. I decided to swing by (got there about 30 min after opening) and the wii and games were gone. Some of the game cases were left behind -  like Pokemon Battle Revolution and Paper Mario. Was surprised that someone grabbed that stuff so quickly. I thought nobody would go out in the pouring rain and cold, but there was still like 5 cars there when I got there.

I did pick up a few dvds and blurays for a total of 5 bucks.

Finding Nemo DVD

Toy Story 3 DVD

School House Rock 30th Anniversary DVD

Basic Instinct w/ and ice pick on dvd new

Frankenstein (the original movie) on bluray sealed

The Thing on blu-ray sealed.

Also got the two wii game cases with instructions and nintendo registration cards

I looked online and was surprised how Finding Nemo and Toy Story dvds seemed to be worth less than I thought. I know they were worth a bit more last year when I use to grab them from sales.

This was the first sale of the year.

Here's today's yard sale pickups. After several weeks of droughts, I finally scored big today...

I paid $5 for all of this Gameboy stuff:

Gameboy Pocket (It's in decent shape, but there's battery corrosion. I still need to test it.

Gameboy Advance Bag

Gex

Lego Island 2

Nintendo World Cup

Mr. Do!

F1 Wold Grand Prix II

Shaq Fu

Pokemon Yellow

FACTORY SEALED POKEMON SILVER AND GOLD!

F8UKCQ3.jpg

I paid $25 for this entire lot of games. Everything is complete and in good condition, except Smash. Bros is missing the manual and F-Zero is box-only.

glToB8r.jpg

Finally, everything in this picture was $17. Carmen Sandiego contains only the box and encyclopedia, but there was a TMNT3 NES manual inside. Kiss Pinball is factory sealed, but the case has a crack on the front.

Hit up one before going to my old town. No video games, but I did get a copy of Wayne's World on DVD for 50 cents. I saw a copy of the Star Wars Trilogy boxset on DVD for $5. Last night, I looked up to see if the un-messed-with versions were on Blu yet and to remember what the DVDs looked like and figured it was a sign. Nope, it had Greedo shooting first so I left it sit.

Awesome with the sealed games. I generally sell of sealed games because I don't find much use holding onto them, but I don't think I'd be able to sell those if I came across them.

Also got these camera for $10. Where's the best place to get 35mm film cheap so I can test them?
Finding film isn't hard, but you only have a lens for one of the cameras. If you aren't interested in keeping them to take pictures with I would suggest selling the canon lens on eBay and donating the bodies. They aren't worth much at all.

Went to a few sales. Went to one that had listed games. I saw a Wii with a few games for $50. A few misc GBA games.

But the thing I made a beeline for was the GameCube with 2 controllers in a case for $30. With this I grabbed several complete games for $5 apiece Super Smash Bros Melee, Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Party 7, Harvest Moon and Pikmin 2. $60 for all

I was thinking I should have grabbed Harvest Moon on DS, and Sonic Adventure/Sonic Spinball for GBA.

Didn't see much out today. I hit up a few sales. The on the advertised games and primitives that we went to had a single Gamecube FIFA game and a single giant clothespin reindeer thing. I asked about games, and the lady said "It's just one, over on the table there..."

My wife was wanting who knows what, but she is into those mass produced in China primitive things.

Everything else was a dirty ass appliance or general junk. We got fucked on that deal.

Stopped in a few more and really just didn't see anything.

Next week we got 3 community sales to hit, so I plan on getting something cool.

Wow, that is a fantastic haul, congrats.

DAT YELLOW PLASTIC! I dont get it, my stuff never looked like that! Personally Id spray paint that Nintendo stuff if I was gonna sell it or keep it!

The plastic yellows no matter how well you take care of the items. Our SNES yellowed and we kept it at room temperature in the original box. It all depends on what batch the items came from.

Had a couple of good finds this weekend but overall ended the day feeling pretty frustrated. Headed to a community yard sale nearby that mentioned Pokemon toys, but it was all toys I already had (kinda dirty, too) and no games. Walked around a bit more and picked up a Wii and GBA SP for $8 total. Get back to my car and find that I've missed a text from a buddy who's at a sale nearby with NES, Sega, and Virtual Boy games. I call him but he's already left, so I rush over only to find someone else had grabbed the entire box. Grrrrrr. So I take a break to meet up with someone for a trade (traded unopened Red Steel 2 /w Wii plus package and I-Ninja for Shadow Hearts 2 CiB, Phantom Brave disc-only, and Shadow of Destiny disc+manual).

After the trade I check out some other sales in the neighborhood and someone tells me about a house about 10 minutes away that has a box full of Nintendo games. I head over to the street and find there are a bunch of other houses selling. I get to the last one on the block to find that they were the one with the games and they went 5 minutes ago. Once again, grrrrrrr. At this point I'm feeling pretty dejected so I decide to pack it in. I hit one final neighborhood on my way back and manage to find a a Wii w/o a power cord for $15 and Bakugan and Punch-out!! for the Wii for $2 each.

Headed home pretty grumpy after that, but at least my wife was nice enough to take me out to lunch to make up for it.

Mine is not yellow, but I did get it from a friend, so it wasn't mine originally. For the SNES it probably depends on which batch it was, but for most other things yellow plastic is a good indication that the item was kept in an intense smoking environment, which is ultimately something I don't want because I don't smoke and those items tend to be really nasty and stink up my house.

I just sold my commodore 128 and it was yellow along with the disc drive, so old computers are famous for yellowing as well, It was not mine originally but the person I bought it from was obviously not a smoker. I also had a gateway computer one time where the monitor yellowed, and as I mentioned before, I don't smoke. Thankfully computers come in other colors these days besides that puke grayish color that eventually yellows.

Atomic Purple Game Boy Color - 1
Everything Else - 20

The GBC was actually from a lone sale near my place that I walked to on 4-19-14. Asked about video games and this was brought out to which my offer of a buck was taken. Everything else was at one sale, the Xbox stuff was 15 and the Game Gear stuff was 5 and the PC games were a buck each to which I offered 20. The Madden game is missing the disk and Final Fantasy VII I'm pretty sure is missing one disk, it has 3 disks in it with an open spot but I couldn't remember if it was 4 disk or 3 like the PS1 version. IIRC the rest of the Xbox & PC games were complete.

Non Find BS
Went to 8 sales and was out for a little over an hour. The first sale of the day was in a community sale I was at on 4-30-11 and the only thing I got from said community sale that year was a broken system only PS3 for $3, I can't remember but I think I went to about 15-20 of my sales for the day in said community sale. I wasn't going to bother going back but one house mentioned Wii games so I get to said sale about 10 maybe 15 minutes early and only see a Cooking Mama game for the Wii and when I asked somebody cleaned them out already of all but that but has luck would have it the lady mentioned the house around the corner which I might have missed if she didn't mention it having Xbox stuff which her young son already was interested in at least some of the games but it sounded like mom said no Jr you don't need it since it sounded like he had a 360 and this was OG Xbox.

I was not in much of a yard saling mood so I only bothered with a few sales I passed on the way in to said advertised sale and a few more nearby on the way home. I did have a small list of 11 sales but between a few of them being indoor estate sales and being spread out too far I stopped at a few nearby on the way home and called it a day. Days like this usually end up with little to nothing more for me anyways and even the few sales afterwards I don't think I even saw any dreck, just one sale that hinted at having a NES but they keep it for the 10 year old in the house IIRC and the last house of the day I end up BSing with the guy for a bit who mentioned being a game collector and having a dedicated game room.

This was an advertised sale. Got it all for $25.

For a second I thought you were in my area! Someone here advertised a nintendo chest but he wanted $60 and the top and one of the sides was totally gone. I dont understand why like 95% of these are in such terrible condition, maybe its something to do with the glue? I really want one but the rare time I find one its in terrible condition and/or way too expensive

Slow dive how you like c2e2 this year? Also nice finds on the sealed SOTN.
It was ok. I didn't buy as much as I usually do. There were a lot less bargain books than years past. I did see hacksaw Jim Dugan and Taimak, so that was pretty cool. I brought my copy of "the last dragon" for him to sign, but he wanted $20 for a sig and a picture, so I didn't bother. Were you at C2E2?

I think they are just paper glued to pegboard. I don't think they were official nintendo releases either.

I would assume it's because most were used by kids. As a kid who saved the boxes to all my games, I still abused the crap out of my metal nintendo garbage pail.
