Alan Wake General Discussion - Out May 18, 2010!
Damn it. So many reviews said it was easy that I played on Hard. Only in episode 2 and I'm stuck because I run out of ammo and can't kill all the enemies, nor can I run to the next light spot. There does not seem to be a way to lower the difficulty without restarting the episode.

Uh oh. You are basically foreshadowing my day tomorrow. I did the same thing. Episode 1 was not difficult but I was afraid it was just a fluke intro-level easiness. Is it so bad that you will restart?

So is the Bright Falls preorder theme from Amazon the same one that came with the Limited Edition or is it different? If it's the same I'll just give it away.

If you do end up giving it away and wouldn't mind sending it my way, I'd be incredibly grateful!

It was pretty easy but I think that's why I enjoyed it so much. I never got frustrated or stuck for any period of time replaying the same part over and over again. There were a couple of sections that required some planning but for the most part it was smooth sailing.

Just finished Episode 3. Best one yet. Something specific that I'm finding so cool is Wake's narration. It gives the game a bit of a film noir feeling to it.

And I want Night Springs on DVD.

If you have a flashlight left, keep flashing it at them (LT) in short bursts. Hit them wit the light, run a bit. Hit them with the light, run a bit. It should allow you enough time to make some progress forward, possibly enough to find some more ammo (red box) or a safe haven. I really wish you could use the rifle to melee...

Agreed!
How do you kill enemies indirect?
I believe you can weaken them and then use a flare to finish them off...I've done it once according to my stats and that's the only way that makes sense.

yes like shoot the exploding barrels ect, its pretty damn fun when you do it. I am playing on Normal and am having the same problem running out of ammo everywhere, the one part i think in ep 2 where you have to keep going using only flash grenades is really really annoying since you get so few of them.

once i sort of learned the LT short burst flashlight trick it worked a little better at least, still those things are way faster than you are

I just reached the
gas station after killing Stucky
but I was convinced way before reaching that point that this has game of the year written all over it. The atmosphere, strong narrative and clever balance of light/firearm usage in combat all come together in brilliant fashion. I only pray the sequel will stay true to the original and not venture off a different path for the sake of quick cash.

Just finished up Episode 2... a real nice extension after the somewhat intro-heavy Episode 1. I really like the packaging of the episodes into somewhat playable bite-sizes. Allows for a nice breather at an appropriate place. And the music is usually awesome at the end.

Just finished Episode 5. Game keeps getting odder and odder, but that is a good thing. I've been waiting for a game like this. Scary and makes you think. Not since Silent Hill 2 have a played a horror game that is highly good.

Just beat it about a half hour ago.
Not the quite as awesome of an ending as I was hoping for, but I like that it leaves it open for interpretation.
Still a very awesome game though. Story, atmosphere and the gunplay were all great. Could have used some more variety in the enemies, guns, etc. though.

The achievement where you have to run to Cauldron Lake without firing a shot was a bitch though. The first part where you're in the car was easy enough, but once I had to start running light to light with about 3 of those fast invisible Taken on my ass with only a few flashbangs and flares to defend myself with, I might have lost my temper a few times.

Going to go back a do a nightmare run to pick up more pages and find some more of the collectibles. That and because I want to use the flare gun more often this time (I kept stockpiling the ammo instead of using it up).

I redeemed everything not realizing and even though they're both worded slightly differently, I do believe they're the exact same. Just another thing that irks me about the CE (short soundtrack being the other.)

Just beat the game and
I am guessing Alan Wake wrote himself off in his story to bring his wife back (cause and effect/guilt and atonement)

I would of like a variety in enemies as well, but hey, that's what sequels are for and Alan Wake deserves a sequel.

This game is fantastic. I just finished Episode 2, trying to only play at night and when my two year old isint interupting me all the time. Only complaint would be lack of ammo and the collectors edition not including the song at the end of episode one, In Dreams - Roy Orbison, is pretty tragic. Its too bad the soundtrack wasnt more complete, but otherwise this game is incredible.

Im playing on hard (halfway through episode 3) and i wanted to change the difficulty during level 2 but im glad you cant cause after i made it through (using planning and strategy) i felt like i accomplished something

I'm in Episode 2 going into Lovers Peak(?) and I ran out of ammo, all I have is my flashlight and there are 5-6 taken showing up at the same time...I think I'm fucked.

Started up on Nightmare after Hard. Gets pretty tough at times. nearing the end of episode 3.

Nightmare mode manuscripts are so awesome.

After i finish up Nightmare ill do a commentary play through.

Game forces you to search for everything (flares, flash bangs, ammo) and run like a bitch between check points. What level are you playing on? I just completed it on Normal and had a decent amount of ammo and flares left over.
I'm in Episode 2 going into Lovers Peak(?) and I ran out of ammo, all I have is my flashlight and there are 5-6 taken showing up at the same time...I think I'm fucked.
There is one series that is quite tricky in Episode 2 which is around the short tunnel and hanging tree ring... I ran out of ammo completely on hard and basically had to stay near the lights as much as possible. If you are around that point then the game really becomes a lesson in dodging, running, short flashlight burst, run, get to the streetlamp lights. But it is doable without ammo and from that point on I have always had ample supplies (I am only at episode 4 now).

Turns out that I was doing something I shouldn't. I had reached lovers peak, and saw the gate, so I thought I had to go up the hill and around it somehow...after a lot of tries I finally realized that there was a small ramp that allowed me to go into Lovers Peak

I beat Episode 2...on to Episode 3.
that there was a small ramp that allowed me to go into Lovers Peak
That's the exact part I was vaguely referring to...:applause:

Episode 4 really takes the cake so far. Just flat-out awesome.

I still haven't opened up my LE.

So how tedious is this game in finding stuff? I read it as a "psychological action thriller" and was hoping it was more on the action side. I tend to just like to hack and slash and not spend all day looking for stuff.

Game is pretty linear. There are times when you can move a bit from the straight forward path and search. Usually takes a minute here and there. I would say I have founded 85 percent of the thermos/manuscripts without using a walkthrough. Some of them are pretty hard to find, especially in the dark and enemies coming at you. Going off the patch an reward you with finding ammo, flares, guns, etc but you could also face more enemies. Double edge sword.

Game is pretty far from hack and slash. Each chapter doesn't have too many enemies. Think or RE 1-3 and not 4-5 in terms of enemies on screen. Most you will face at a time is 5-6 which can easily be dealt with a flare gun or flash bang. I am halfway done on Episode 4 and I have put in about 10 hours so far into the game. I would say expect 10-15 hours of gameplay for the first walkthrough on Normal. If you really know what you are doing and just race through the game (without exploring, collecting), you could probably beat it in 6-8 hours.

Enjoying this one even though I'm not the one to play through suspense/horror/thriller games. I think its important to play in the right setting to compliment the game.. i.e night time, lights off.

I ended up receiving it for free due to a mistake on Amazon CS's part, back when I preordered it in.. November?

This game is worth buying at the $60 price. I've just finished the game earlier today, on Normal and I'm really impressed with it. I'm actually selling it off so I can buy the LE and play it again.

Finding all the items is not exactly "easy" It takes some time. The action/combat is incredibly good, So much so if you go back and replay it the combat never gets stale.

The important collectable stuff is usually in your path, very few are off the path. If you are the type that has little time for games the episodic nature of the game is great.

well it's good to know that you like that game. Wait till the next week and see what is waiting ahead for you.

The combat is awesome. Controls are perfect. The one thing I am hoping for in Alan Wake 2 is more of a blend of exploring and combat. It felt a LOT to me like the first Uncharted. You always new when you were exploring and you knew when you were about to hit combat. A better blend would literally make the game perfect.
Great to see that a certain part of Alan Wake matches a certain part of L4D2.
Yea, I laughed a little when I got to that part.

I did the same thing when I played that part. I'm on episode 3.

On episode 5 right now, about to leave the Sheriff's office, I can sense that it is getting close to a finale.
So enemies are invincible until you shine the light at their faces and they glow gold right?
Yes. Shine the flashlight until you see the circle disappear and a little flame explosion happens. Then you can shoot them.

The ending raises more questions than it actually answers. Not that I'm complaining but I would have enjoyed more a lot more info on a few of the main players in the storyline.

I wonder just how much time Wake bought Bright Falls by suppressing the Dark Presence lurking in Jagger. I mean plenty of it seemed to live on in Officer Nightingale along with Rose prime to accept the torch as the next Lady of the Light. Shame it appeared Alan had to trap himself in the manuscript in order to set his wife free but judging from the last line in the ending credits we'll see him again in sequel.

Still GOTY for me without question. Thankfully now I can delve into the AW files without fear of spoilers.

The combat in this game is really great. Simple and straightforward but with a bit of strategy that makes most fights rewarding. Its particularly cool how the table turns during a fight... they start dark and you break the darkness and then you are the attacker. Its a great switch of empowerment... especially in large fights where you get to that point where you know you have the odds now (episode 4 really exemplifies this).
So you buy the LE then say it may just be a rental game?

dude, why don't you keep your eyerolling to yourself.

I got the LE because it sounded like it would be fantastic. I also loved Max Payne. Just because I'm having second thoughts about it doesn't mean I'm some sort of moron for buying the LE. Oh yeah, I got it for $60.

So basically ... fuck off. Thankfully other people in this thread are helpful.

just beat epidode 3 which was pretty long... by far some great scenery and atmospheres in this episode. The whole storn and wind effects in the forest is amazing

Lovin the game...

How much did Verizon pay for product placement in the game? I am still laughing that you get 5 achievement points for watching a Verizon commercial. Maybe Verizon pays Remedy a certain amount for everybody who gets that achievement. Boob Tube.

Oh god, I just finished chapter 4 with that Verizon commercial. I haven't really minded any of the product placement, such as the energizer batteries, but that particular instance was pretty bad I think. That segment is one of the most intense in the game up to that point and then all of a sudden there's a Verizon commercial? I was thinking it was going to be another cool Night Springs episode or something else to fit the mood.

Other than that, chapter 4 was the best yet. The climactic battle was really great.

Rented this from GameFly and really, really enjoyed it. The story is fantastic, and the combat is definitely something different and enjoyable. Think I'm gonna have to break down and actually buy this one, because I am certainly going to want to play the DLC episodes.
