Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

I need to go to Japan. I have the money, no job, no gf, no pets. I just don't want to go alone and I am worried about where I will sleep. Does that air B&B exist for Japan? I am seriously considering staying at a manga cafe, since it is cheaper than hostels and capsule hotels.
I've been half a dozen times but I can't really recommend places to stay. I always stay with my in-laws.

But if you want advice on what to do or eat while over there, that I can help with.

I decided to look and see if there was any news on Discotek's red jacket Lupin III release, and didn't really find anything.  I did see that Otakon is less than a week away, and that they've got a panel or booth or some such thing.  I expect that there will be a more formal announcement at that time.

I did however come across a cover art concept they showed back in March that I thought I would share.

Lupin-the-3rd-Part-2-Collection-1-Header.jpg

It looks very similar in style to the Amazon exclusive Cowboy Bebop set.

They said that they plan to start releasing that next year. They also said not to expect any huge Lupin news at the panel (Part 4 announcement),am hoping for something like a blu-ray of The Mystery of Mamo film.

Kiznaiver was alright. Not quite what I expected, but there was some fun animation in there.

Does anyone know of any way to get caught up on the Pokemon anime? I know the newer episodes are generally streamable, but I can't really find much else past the Orange Islands stuff.

Not legally, but the fansubs group PocketMonsters.net has been subbing the series since Hoenn.

If you don't mind the dub, the Pokémon website has a large number of episodes available to stream and most of the show is on Netflix I believe.

Do note that, while there are callbacks here and there to previous seasons, most of the regions after Johto are generally stand-alone.

I think next episode he'll be doing exactly that. He'll give Rem his FutureVision(tm) and then figure out how to play each one to get them to help or maybe ignore them (like that one bitchy woman). That's why it'll be fun to watch the next several episodes....lots of good stuff!
I pretty much called it...

I pretty much called it...
fine you called that one. I am gonna call the next bit.

to be clear the only bit of light novel for RE:zero i have read is part of volume one and i know no spoilers for the rest of the series so if this goes down don't yell at me.

the battle with the whale goes poorly, after a while Subaru is in trouble and Rem sacrifices herself to save him again. She is once again eaten and removed from everyone's memory and shortly after the whale is killed. In shock of losing Rem again Sabaru gets himself killed again, only to discover that a new check point has been made right after the whale was killed and Rem is lost forever.

Cool, thanks! I got excited looking at the Pokemon site's interface initially. Thought for a moment that they actually had all of them up for streaming.

I just realized the other day that I haven't seen much of the anime outside of my childhood. Seemed like it might be a fun thing to catch up on.

This wouldn't surprise me and would be depressing lol. Sounds like the kind of twists we've been getting in the plot.

Not reading those ReZero spoilers. I like surprises.

5 episodes into watching Armored Troopers Votoms. Always wanted to watch this. Hard to believe this came out only 2 years after I was born. This show is incredible considering it's age.

While Hoenn and Sinnoh have their strengths, I recommend just watching Kalos for now. It is literally the best the anime has ever been and Ash starts the Kalos League Final this week.

Also, skip Unova entirely. It's made of bad stuff.

ReZero ep 19:

This is the only show I watch from a week to week bases. Every other show I always wait 2 weeks.

I tought this whole episode was a build to the White Whale not showing up, but he didn't. I'm still positive something really bad is going down and I can't wait.

Tonight is my "lovey dovey" Monday night. I have sweetness/lightning & Orange to watch.

I posted my guess of the really bad thing that will go down :p

you said you won't read spoilers, but it's not a spoiler just a guess.

I am hoping I am wrong.

I don't stream anime nearly as much as you guys do, but I am 5 episodes in on New Berserk.

I like it from a content perspective so far.  I don't mind that it skipped a couple of arcs, because I'd rather they skip them completely than try and cram them all into a single episode.  It's as brutal and unsettling as I would expect from a show diving deeper into the source material.

I've gotten used to the animation by now, but character movement is still just so very unnatural looking.

I read your spoiler and I can totally see that happening. Here's my idea:

They kill the White Whale over a long battle. Rem dies in the fight and Sub struggles over resetting or leaving the way things are. Everyone is super happy so he decides to keep events as is. Everyone forgets Rem except Sub.

The show is a terrible adaption. There's no question about it. The 3D mixed with 2D is jarring. It's stiff and never looks good. It's a shame they went the 3D route. But no matter how bad I think it looks I'll watch till the end and enjoy it. It's Berserk and Berserk is awesome.

If anything I love the ending theme.

Sweetness & Lighting ep6

This show keeps getting more relatable for me. We cook gyoza at home often and make them the same way they do in this episode. On a personal level this show hits me hard..The most fun I have when eating is when we all cook and eat as a family. I love that this show is about introducing children to cooking at a young age. This show really puts a smile on my face.

So Spice & Wolf is getting a sequel book series.

Serious Spoilers:

Their daughter is one of the main characters and she is pretty much Holo with grey hair.

I am hyped. :whee:

Poor Noivern. It's so sad the anime writers hate your guts for whatever reason.

That being said, somehow Pikachu now has a more impressive victory than taking down a Latios. Taking down a Tyranitar AND a Metagross all by itself? Badass.

Orange took an interesting twist with the last episode. Anyone else watching this?
i need to catch back up.

I read like half of the manga as it was coming out, and the anime should be around if not past where I stopped reading so it should be far more exciting now.

It started kinda slow but the last episode really peeked my interest. It became a lot more interesting.

These last few anime seasons have all been about changing something from your past. Does Japan currently suffer from regret issues?

Heh, have you ever been to the Hiroshima memorial? Ever read the explanation they put as to why we dropped the bomb on them? Think that'll answer your question.

All this Olympics got me to finally start Ping Pong the Animation - four episodes in and its great!

Any other shows with similar art style and editing?

Anything else directed by Masaaki Yuasa. The man certainly has a unique voice when it come to directing.

Yea, I really, really, really, really, really hate the sound director they hired for XY. They are complete shit at their jobs. People will say that they didn't wanna license the vocal songs, but they've played Japanese instrumental themes before (OK, Advance Adventure, By Your Side, and Pokemon Symphonic Medley 2) and this song was just way better. I don't understand how TCPI can defend that. Like, at all. The worst part is that most of the other instances of Ash-Greninja uses the dub theme "Stand Tall" as BGM. It's nowhere near XY&Z, but it at least decent battle music.

I am really worried about the Kalos League. I really, really hope TCPI doesn't fuck up Ash vs. Sawyer. That battle is one of the best in the franchise and it will lose all its impact if it's handled the same way.

I don't mind the actual VAs, though. Then, again, I may be biased since the main cast just autographed one of my DVDs at Otakon...

Never been but I get the idea. The big Nationalist movement seems to want to change that idea into making Japan more sympathetic. But that's a discussion for a different thread.

It hasn't always been around but the recent surge of the "restart/redue/relive" theme has been a popular one in recent seasons. ReZero seems to have taken the "trapped in fantasy world" & "redue" popularity and cashed in on it big time. Last episode was acton filled. Butler dude was badass. I still hold by my hypothesis a few pages back.

Hanada-kun #6 had a fun little foreshadowing (or postshadowing if that's a word) with him leading a bunch of kids. Go watch Barakamon if you haven't folks.

Mob Psycho 100 & Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan are blending together for me. Both are about psychics teens who don't care too much for the crazy amount of power they have. Both have some good comedy but Mob Psycho is more action while Saiki is slice of life. I recommend both. Psycho's animation continues to be a blast to watch.

New Game! really is reminding me of Shirobako in so many ways. Thanks for the recomendation on this one starkillr.

Yeah I liked the last episode too. As usual, nothing can ever be too cheerful in that show lol. Notice the person behind him whispering in his ear when he pumped out his "witch scent"? I have a lot of theories rolling around in my head on how this show can end now.

So I tried a couple new shows last night out of boredom.

Servamp - There's no girls in this show only cute boys. They're going to tease the idea of a gay relationship. It's obvious Yaoi bait. Yuri or Yaoi, I'm not really into it. Not my thing so it's a no-go for me.

Thunderbolt Fantasy - Doesn't really count as anime but I kept hearing great things about it. I was reluctant due it being a puppet show but I'm glad I got over that. The action scenes are amazing and a blast to watch. And by god, the editing is amazing. My only complaint is since they are puppets there's no facial expression.

Clannad ep 9 - Sorry guys, im not feeling it. I'm at Fuko (ghost girl's) story. I don't really get it. Let me get this strait: She's the ghost of her unconscious self who got in an accident and giving out wooden starfish at her school as invitations for her sister wedding who used to teach art class at the school but doesn't want to get married because she wants to be by her sisters side then requests to get married at the school just because she taught there for like a year? It's contrived and does't make a lick of sense. I'm sorry but if a complete stranger came up to me and gave me a wooden starfish asking me to go to their sister's wedding, I'd think they were bat-shit crazy. Also I don't care about any of the characters. Not much attention has been paid to most the cast. It's hard to get invested in anyone. Even the MC is a boring drone. Does it get better?

Lol yea it gets better. I generally just laughed off the non-sensical bits since it's anime and they do stupid crap all the time.

Okay, I'll stick with at least till the next arc starts up. I don't hate it but there's other things I'm watching. I'll put it on hold for a while after I catch up to some other shows.

I'm really into Votoms now. 13 episodes in and it's been great.

clannad only gets good once it starts focusing solely on Nagisa Furukawa, until then it isn't all that good. It's a chore to get through, but once you do after story will be great.

Man, that episode of Pokemon made me salty as fuck. Once again the writers force Ash to lose a League Battle he should have won and this one stings even more since the entire show was headed towards Ash finally being triumphant.

I see a lot of people pissed about Ash losing in Pokemon. I'm like 15 years behind in the show but from what I understand Ash never wins a tourney and the show blueballs their fans. I watch some sports anime and that would suck if I invested so much time just to see the MC lose for over a decade. I remember the end of Haikyu 1st season left me mad as hell, but season 2 made up for that.

And who's Ash hanging around with now? What's up with Brock, Misty & Team Rocket? Is Ash's mom still secretly banging Mr. Mime?

If Ash wins, they'd have to move on from him as the main character, wouldn't they? I mean they seemingly had the perfect opportunity to do so with XY and didn't, so Ash and Pikachu will be around as the protagonists forever, resetting their Pokemon every few years.

What happened to all of Ash's old Pokemon, anyway? Does he just give up on them when the shiny new ones come along?

The thing is that this season had a lot of development towards Ash finally winning a League. His team (Pikachu, Hawlucha, Greninja (with Mega Evolution), Goodra, Noivern, and Talonflame) was arguably his strongest yet. He managed to defeat the Trainer that would have normally been his downfall in previous seasons. He was able to go toe-to-toe with a League Champion and do actual damage for the first time ever. He took out multiple Legendaries using only one or two Pokemon each. He challenged Alan (the guy he lost to) twice and got better against him each time. Then the actual match comes. Noivern and Goodra go down without taking out a single Pokemon, but Pikachu took out both a Tyranitar and a Metagross by himself.

Then, it came down to Ash-Greninja vs Mega Charizard X. Charizard had gotten hit by Pikachu's Thunderbolt earlier (before Mega Evolving, mind you), took a Cut, several Aerial Aces, a Water Shuriken, and a Super Water Shuriken that was stronger than anything Ash has ever used before, and Charizard looked no worse for wear. Meanwhile, Greninja took two Dragon Claws and a Blast Burn and fainted. Keep in mind in the last match he took several Leaf Storms and Frenzy Plants and was minimally damaged.

It's not quite as BS as the losses in Sinnoh (Trainer full of Legendaries) or Unova (Idiot Trainer has a Hydreigon), but because everything in the story has been leading to Ash getting over the hump (unlike previous regions where Ash suffered a big loss or two beforehand or he had a very underdeveloped team), it really, really felt like this would be the year. And that has pissed a LOT of people off.

As for the traveling companions, Misty left at the end of Johto to go back and become a Gym Leader, mainly to bring in a new female character (RSE playable character May) to boost ratings, though Misty herself stopped being an actual character halfway through Johto. Brock stayed on through the end of Sinnoh, where he returned home to help his brother be a Gym Leader and learn to be a Pokemon Doctor. He was even more superflurous than Misty since all he did through Sinnoh was get jabbed by Croagunk and call out Happiny to move things. His last capture, Happiny, happened 1/4 of the way through the saga.

Currently Ash is traveling with Serena, the PC of X/Y, who is the first real legitimate companion that wants to be Ash's girlfriend, Clemont, the Lumiose City Gym Leader who is an inventor, and Bonnie, Clemont's sister and keeper of Zygarde-1 (nicknamed Squishy).

Team Rocket's still around, though they get pushed to the sidelines a lot more often and likely will moreso now since Lysandre has started his invasion and attack of Lumiose City.

No, they wouldn't have to move on. Ash is not somebody who can rest of his laurels, otherwise he would have retired after winning the Orange Islands or accepted Brandon's offer to be a Frontier Brain.

Starting with Hoenn, Ash leaves all his old Pokemon with Professor Oak, though likely Goodra will go back home to its marshland. Charizard is also back at Oak's, as it came back for good at the end of Unova. The sole exception is Aipom, who was caught at the end of Battle Frontier but stayed through Sinnoh since Diamond and Pearl introduced a new Evolution for it.

After the bullshit that was Pokemon, it was nice to have a happy episode to cheer me up.

Gundam Build Fighters Try: Island Wars was so much fun, despite it being 90% fluff. But that ending. So heartwarming.

Really liked this last episode of RE: Zero, a lot more positive than the usual experience. I think I'm totally jaded though and I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. I feel it coming! Also thought the last episode of Orange was interesting. Not a lot of progress on the story, but boy Naho is dense. The other shows in my seasonal menagerie are moving along nicely. Excited to see Gundam wrap up and transition into IBO later this year. Go from cry-babies to hard core killas! Win.

this episode of re:zero had me do something I don't think I have ever done before.

Cheered when a character I like was removed from the story line. Rem will live through the arc. yay.

On a whim, decided to go back and finish up Asterisk War. Only got up to Episode 6 last time, but just finished the series. I do agree that it doesn't really do anything new, but the plot and characters are enjoyable enough when they're not doing harem romcom antics. And it is very, very, very pretty. If FUNimation or Viz were the ones releasing it, I might have picked it up, but no way in hell is the series worth what Aniplex is asking for.

Will likely go back and finish up the other series I was watching at the same time back then, Heavy Object.

Asterisk War might stay in backlog limbo for awhile, along with Ace of Diamond. I'm pretty far into both of them but it's been so long it's hard to get motivated into picking them back up. Same with Kiznaver, only 2 episodes left.

And there's other shows I plan on getting back into like Natsume's Book of Friends, Amanchu, Invaders of the Rokujyoma, Resturante Paradiso. But those shows I've only seen 1 or 2 episodes.

Also Medaka Box is one I started up, liked it but just stopped watching after several episodes. I just need to pick one of these shows and stick with it. But which one?

Medaka Box has one of those weird genre shifts. It starts out as slice of life before getting a storyline at the end of Season 1, while Season 2 is pretty much all storyline, while afterwards in the original manga it has more battle arcs and apparently a deconstruction arc where Medaka becomes a bit more of a jerkass.

I'd stick with medaka box. It isn't anything special but once it gets going it is at least an enjoyable watch.
