BEST BUY'S VIDEO GAMES TRADE-IN PAGE

Check most up-to-date TIV using BB's Video Games Value Estimator.

Check which BB stores do trade-ins here.
In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

:bomb: The values in the Lists do not match the values in the Estimator. What's up with that?
I don't know. It seems the Lists are usually updated on Sundays, and the TIVs are adjusted to reflect the List in a few days. But as trades are made, the TIVs may change and the Lists are not updated frequently. Again, check the Estimator for latest TIV.

The promo says "Trade 2..." or "Trade 3..." but I only want to trade 1 game, will I still get $x amount?
You will get whatever TIV is offered according to the Estimator for each game. The promo is titled "Trade 2" etc to make the giftcards sound more lucrative.

The 2 games I want to trade are worth more than $60 combined according to the Estimator. Does that mean I will only get $60 for the 2 games?
No. You will get whatever TIV is offered according to the Estimator for each game. For example, if your total according to the Estimator is $70, you will get a $70 giftcard.

:bomb: If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as you ship it before the "Ship by" date "Your item(s) must be received within 14 days to get the quoted value" (as of 5/2), and your games are received in the condition you declared.

How long do I have after I lock in a trade online before I have to ship it?
30 days. Has been recently changed to "Your item(s) must be received within 14 days to get the quoted value".

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
According to BB: "We will not accept more than 3 games of the same title and platform from a customer (or address) in a year. Please do not submit more than the limit as excess submissions WILL NOT BE RETURNED." Example, you can trade 3 copies of Portal 2 for PS3 and 3 copies of Portal 2 for x360 without problems. Some people have been banned from trade-ins at BB due to the violation of this policy. If you plan on trading more than 3 copies of a game per platform by doing it through various stores, you do so at your own risk and discretion.

:bomb: Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
BB used to be strict about complete copies, but this has changed, and ppl are trading games in store without manuals or cover sleeve for full TIV. If you trade online it's sometimes YMMV. I would advise you to send in complete games (case, disc, manual) since some ppl are reporting only getting 50% of the locked TIV.

I see people talking about getting Amazon giftcards by trading at Best Buy. How are they doing that?
Some Best Buys sell Kindle giftcards which can be used on Amazon.com like regular Amazon giftcards. You will not get the Kindle card with your trade, but you can buy them with your BB giftcard.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
According to BB's own FAQ:
Q: Is trade-in limited to items I bought at Best Buy?
A: No.

I don't know why this happens, but apparently some stores do not have their system setup to take non-BB purchased items at this time. Check the link above regarding stores that do video games trade-ins first.

I thought people knew of this link. Anyway, it is tricky to find. You click on the regular video games trade-in estimator then in the window that pops up you click on "Trade-in home" then you again click on Video games in the "Trade-in categories" and then you get the page I linked you to. Also, this is set to expire on 8/27 so we can safely say that other than trade in 2 for $xx promos we won't be seeing any bonus % TIV promos soon.

I disagree. I think this will just be a background thing and they are still likely to do some 40% bonus for pre-ordering or whatever -- I mean, if they are trying to emulate GS why not go all out, since I think GS has 3 different TIV promos active right now (the 40% coupon, the 40% for E3 games, and the 50% for buying a used game) .... (and now queue somebody asking about one -- or all three -- of those promotions to be explained to them)

Omg wtf I just traded 4 games yesterday at BB and they said there was no other promotion going on. I was thinking about going back and ask for my $7 dollars but I trade in alot of stuff there and I dont want them to look into my account. Thanks for posting about the promotions.

That paper you signed signed over all the rights to the games to them.
Also by accepting the gift card you agreed to the terms of whatever was on it.
Can't go back.

I received my two copies of Brink yesterday for a best buy flip. I started up the game and at first was like, uh oh I'm going to like this but then the campaign started (I guess) and I wasn't sure if I was dropping in an online game or what. Also, I was dropping 4 guys, standing around with no cover and it took killing a medic to really get noticed and shot at.

Anyway, TIV estimator says it's worth 16 but it's still on the 2 for $50 list. Also, if the 25% stacks I look to rake in another $8-$10 because I'm not sure if it'll do 25% on original TIV or adjusted after 2 for $50 deal.

You get one or the other. Either you boost the $16 TiV to $25 with another accompanying game or you get $20 (16*1.25) for the 25% bonus. It will only allow you to use one promo at a time, the same way GS does. Unfortunately their system isn't set up to choose the best one for you automatically.

I had to split my 4 games up into two trades...two for the $50 and the other two for the 25% bonus.

This is what I plan to do. I have 2 games for $50, and I have a few that I want under the extra 25%.

I have question about the trade-in limits. Is the trade-in limit of 3 of a kind online separate from the limits in-store?

Last edited by a moderator:
Hmm people have been successful trading in more than 3 at different stores but I read recently that a few guys were banned from trading games in. It's upto you if you want to take the risk.

It's 3 of a kind period. If you do get it passed you'll most likely be banned after the fact and not get another trade.

The BB where I am knows me by name for my grab the deals and trade in multiple copies. Traded in 3 blood stones last night for a 6 dollar profit on each copy. Got 3 more coming in the mail. Damn this shit is fun.

His question was more asking about whether the online and in-store system factors both options as towards the 3 limit rule.

Nobody has confirmed it at this point as it's pretty early and the ban hammers will take time to be issued out for the one's that went over the limit. It's better to be conservative and just stick within 3 betweeen both systems combined. If you get yourself banned you essentially lose out on hundreds of dollars in trade-in credit down the line over squeezing out an extra $20 today.
Had my first two game rejections today because they were marked not for resale. Think if I take em back in disc only they'll accept them?
They Definitely will as long as there are different employees working!
Had my first two game rejections today because they were marked not for resale. Think if I take em back in disc only they'll accept them?
Only if your store knows/realizes they can take games disc only.

You can find my story in this thread about how my store kept trying to reject my trade (and even a customer service rep on the phone outright lying to me) because of the "not for resale" and later claiming the games just weren't in the system.

If you do need to escalate the matter, take it to Best Buy's forums. Those mods actually know their policies and will help you straighten things out.

You should be able to tell them to re-read their policies about game trade-ins because it seemed like the employees at my store were just daft until they read their own policies themselves.

Good luck ;)

so my bestbuy was awesome as usual. traded in 4 brinks, i was worried cuz it went from 20 to 16, but no fret they gave me 100 for all 4 (2xbx 2 ps3) and i kept a copy for myself. free brink, but i dont know if its worth it, iv already got all trophies but rank 5, satchel kill(need to be rank 5) and all audio logs which is just grinding levels. i will hold on til free dlc but wow, this should have been a $15 psn game.

Hmmmmm...the TIV for Black Ops dropped to $23 from $25. I wonder what ever could have caused that.

coughcough$14.99BLOPSPrestigecoughcough

Actually I'm shocked it didn't drop FURTHER than $2.;)

I have traded over the 3 limit on several occasions. However I had the employees working tell me it was 3 a day so if I get banned I think I have a good cause to fight it. I brought in 4 copies of a game on accident and the employees told me to bring the other back the next day. So I think getting banned has more to do with a dick manager than the actual 3 per rule does. If you do it with some sort of discretion you should be fine.

had that happen to me too. asked the worker what if i just remove the art work and turn in the discs? he said, yeah that's a good idea and did it right on the spot.

I just removed the "Not for resale" UPC (cut it out) from 2 Tony Hawk Shred games that I just traded in... They are a little confused when they see the missing UPCs (I just say I needed it for a rebate) but I think it raises less questions then leaving it there.

A trading limit of 3 per day doesn't make any sense. The rule is to discourage flippers from abusing any TIV loophole. It wouldn't make sense to allow people to trade in 21 copies of a game in one week (for just one platform alone).

I agree that I think discretion will be the important thing of any huge trade in but this would be similar to Gamestop in that just because the register accepts more than the limit doesn't mean you can't get banned for it afterwards. It's a risk that imo isn't worth the trouble to get banned for.

Oh I completely agree with you. Its 3 a year and its obvious but if they are telling me 3 a day then well I am not too worried about a ban. Its the same three people who always do the trades and they all said it. Just more proof Best Buy doesn't have many employees who know what they are doing.

I got my account limited. I was trading in three from Xbox and PS3. The manager limited me to 3 period. He said if I try more I will get flagged in the system. So if trading in games make sure that A the manager is fine with it, or B that you aren't trading in the same title at the same time. I had to for brink since it was the 2 for $50 deal.

Also if anyone has 4 brink games or 4 from the 2 for $50 you have to do them in separate transactions.

Has anyone gotten a 25% TIV bonus from trading in through the mail? Curious if they do that. I looked back a couple pages, but I didn't see anything. Just flippers.

No, listed on the trade in estimator online, it's an in-store promo, just like 2 for 50

Yup. Both versions (360/PS3) both dropped to $6.00 along with Goldeneye for the Wii which dropped to $7.00

Glad I traded in my 6 copies yesterday. ;)

Thanks for reporting. I was planning on moving some GS credit over to BB. Saves me a trip.

I hate to do this, but I think I'm going to trade-in my Child of Eden and Dance Central I got when Amazon price matched the B1G1 Best Buy Kinect games deal. Don't have a Kinect nor did I even get to try Child of Eden, but I suppose there might be a better deal for both in the future... Need some credits towards that 3DS, amirite? ;)

How did you trade 6, they only let me trade in 3 (ps3+xbox)? Well at least I lock 2 into Amazon so not a total lost.

You can trade 3 per title per platform in a year. Some managers may restrict it more in store since it says they have the right to refuse any trade for any reason.

Edit
Found it explicitly - "We will not accept more than 3 games of the same title and platform from a customer (or address) in a year."

3 for PS3 and 3 for xbox. I was also told about the 3 per day rule and that I could bring more in the following day, but I don't want to risk any problems down the road. No need to ruin a good thing.

I am going to play dumb and ask the bestbuy what the policy is. I hope they tell me 3 per a day cause If bestbuy ever link their trade in account together from other store I am going to get bannded.

But if they said 3 per a day at least I can use.
i have a Buy 2 get one free coupon from gamestop. are there any preowned game from gamestop that is worth flipping at best buy?
Quite honestly the trade in promo's at best buy right now are kinda weak, if you can find any on the 2/50 list that are flipable that might be your best bet.
