Blu-ray Discussion Thread - The One and Only
My TDK/WallE order from amazon is "shipping soon". :whee:
Must be nice... mine has nothing at all attached to it...
So, who has the lowest price advertised on TDK Blu-Ray?
BB has it advertised for $24.99, though BB.com has it for $23.99.

Amazon.com also has it for $23.99.

so for those that get TDK, please pay attention to the IMAX and widescreen ratio shifting and let me know if it bothers you as much as it bothered me. If nothing else, someone should start a petition to release a widescreen ratio only version of TDK in blu-ray, or at least an update that gives us the option to turn the ratio shifting off.

When I watched it on IMAX opening day, I didn't even notice the widescreen shifts, the timing was so spot on, that they really didn't interfere with the viewing experience.

From people on other boards such as dvdtalk.com and bluray.com say that the shift isn't very noticeable on the disc either.

What people SHOULD be complaining about is the horrendous, awful EE.

There are literally halos around the actors in most brightly-lit scenes.

I know this is a looooong shot, but no one here has the import of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on Blu-Ray, do they?

Whoo, reading through the TDK PQ threads make my head asplode. All I know is that it wouldn't matter whether Warner got the transfer right with this release or not--they're guaranteed making this a double dip. It's just too popular/huge of a movie.

It looks stellar and on my 73" if i wasn't looking for it i'd hardly notice the shifts.

Not only do I think the PQ is great on TDK but I don't mind the shifts at all. I'd rather it go into the IMAX ratio then them cropping all of those scenes because the whiners need it all in one aspect ratio.

Hooray my BD TDK will be arriving from amazon in a couple days, perfect, right after my finals so I won't waste away 2.5hrs on watching it.

I would second this! It's all about the OAR!
I would second this! It's all about the OAR!
Well if it was OAR it would be more like 4:3 for the IMAX scenes, not 1:78

Oooohhh in yo face!

VENTURE BROTHERS SEASON 3 ON BLU-RAY MARCH 24

I really just yelled that at the top of my lungs.... can't wait.

Would you rather have it in 4:3?

The shifting doesn't bother me, and the picture looks outstanding to me--unlike all the A/V nerds at AVSforums bitching about Edge Enhancement and DNR in a long thread over there.

I'm glad I just like movies and I'm not a videophile who has to stress out over minor A/V issues.

Yes, well the people who ARE videophiles and nerds are pissed about it. Dont hate on people with better tv/sound systems than you.. people who review movies or like to have movies perfect are pissed for good reasons :(
Would you rather have it in 4:3?
No but that one guy was "It's all about the OAR!" when, at 1:78, it actually isn't OAR at all.

I get what Ice2 is saying--when you invest in the highest end equipment you have certain expectations.

Since I'm not that particular, I generally stay out of those high-end enthusiast discussions.

I peeked into the TDK PQ threads just to see if I could tell the difference or detect the issues in question, and unfortunately for me...I can't.

At least, not in a way that made it a problem for me. :p

Way to throw in a nice, little dig there.

Its people who care about this that are pissed.. the same ones are pissed at warner still for their crappy ass "Dolby Digital 5.1" yeah it may not matter if you dont have a system but to people who do its a giant "hey screw you guys" from warner :(

I'm ok with a bit of DNR/EE...I won't die nor will I go off and be crazy like some of the AVSers. But shit like Gangs of NY is just BAD.

im curious as to what type of setup you have.. i may need some tips on improving my setup

Do you guys actually keep the cardboard slipcases? I usually don't care too much, but I just got the Bond movies from Amazon and two of them had the Quantum movie e-Movie Cash stickers directly on the cases. Trying to take it off completely destroys the slipcase. The other 4 movies, however, had plastic over the slipcase as well and the sticker on top.
Do you guys actually keep the cardboard slipcases?
Course. I really like slipcases on movies, they sort of make the package just seem more impressive and valuable, despite how aesthetic that sounds.

At least, not in a way that made it a problem for me. :p
Trust me, spending a lot of time on AVSForum.com can make your head spin with the money some people spend on their stuff. It is a wealth of information about AV and related items, though yes, there's a bit of snobbery that goes on for some people. As much as I'd love to spend some of the money they do on their equipment, it's just not feasible for most people.

Take a run through the speaker and receiver sections and you'll see what I'm talking about.

They did manage to steer me in the right direction to my latest TV purchase, and in all honesty, I can't complain about it. A KDL-52XBR6 is truly some amazing viewing when you have the right stuff to feed it. Shrek 3 on HD-DVD and Kung Fu Panda on BR, some pretty good demo material.

With the TV section down, it's off to receivers and speakers. Some time next year, when my TV purchase is less raw on my wallet. :whistle2:s

It should be TrueHD for any audio, yes, regardless of your equipment.
No but that one guy was "It's all about the OAR!" when, at 1:78, it actually isn't OAR at all.
Hello, I am js1 "that guy". My point in saying what I said about OAR, was that I was in agreement that the shifting should be kept in place, instead of keeping one ratio like scorch mentioned. You do make a good point about it possibly being a better OAR of 4:3, but you have to take what the director/studio puts out.... Until the ultimate, limited, special edition comes out.

DD+ Was only for HD DVD, no blu-ray would ever do it, theres no reason to honestly. If they were going to do DD+ They might as well do TrueHD. Its kind of a catch 22..

I agree that some are demo material, but there are some that SHOULD BE demo material that just aren't.. which is a shame. There's no reason for every release to not be at least 4 star pq.. its the studios fault. Like 28 days later. Whoever did that transfer should be fired.. the edge enhancement.. overall shittacular color.. etc. Even though it was shot in SD and I understand that.

ALL ANIMATED MOVIES SHOULD BE REFERENCE MATERIAL!!

There are a few BD's released with DD+ (Concert releases). IIRC, DD+ is not in the Blu-ray spec so most studios use either standard DD5.1 or lossless.

I noticed twice during the entire movie and it was my first time seeing it ever. I actually really liked that they kept those IMAX scenes in.

What type of klipsch do you have? Like shrike, I'll probably be upgrading my speakers later as well. I'm ok with the Onkyo 605, but my speakers are a mis-matched frankenstein job. I wonder if yours are the same ones my father-in-law has. His are pretty nice, but rather large bookshelf-looking ones.

My wife was complaining to me a little while ago that she wanted to watch TDK already, but the order only shipped yesterday from amazon. >_

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...psch&lp=12&type=product&cp=2&id=1210378662671

Theres six of them + The front channel + Sub.. i need to get another sub at some point just been lazy.
Dang, those are nice. Pretty pricey on that site, but I won't be ready to buy until mid to late next year I imagine.
Start with these. They're OK.

I do have a polk center and surrounds. They're pretty old though.

Well, now I'm confused (with my DeepDiscount 20% off order)

Order Number:
Shipping Method: 5 - 10 BUSINESS DAY DELIVERY
Estimated Arrival date: 12/19/08 - 12/24/08

Quantity Item # Description Price
-------- ------------ ---------------------------------------- ----------
1 HVD002071 BLR : THE THIRD MAN (CRITERION) $ 22.38

Merchandise Total: $ 22.38
Tax: $ .00
Shipping & Processing: $ .00
Total for Shipped Items: $ 22.38

But my order was for The Third Man w/ t-shirt and it's still listed as open when I go to my account.

Weird but at least at the very minimal I'll get The Third Man for $22.38 and The Last Emperor for $20.89

nice i have the lower end 605. What i need help with is speakers. I recycled my old 5 speakers from my first JVC HTIB. My sub is a Polk 110.

I guess i cant really go all out since my setup is in a small/mid bedroom. I can see myself going all out though if i had a nice living room space for it.

Not to derail this thread too much more with general A/V talk, but I'd like to invest in a better center channel myself. I figure once I nail that, I can work on the other stuff slowly. I mostly listen to movies and games on my HT set up. I'd love a klipsch RC-64, but I dunno if I want to spend that much on one speaker. I'm not that particular, but the set my father-in-law has is really nice.

Back OT sort of, I rec'd the Wanted LE BR set yesterday. It's honkin' huge. Not Harry Potter 1-5 bulky huge, but substantial considering it's just one movie. The bound book-slash-case is very nice. I always wonder why I buy these since I end up not wanting to touch it and fuck it up after I get it. Anyway, haven't had time to check out the movie yet. Luvs me some Angelina, though.

The center channel is definitely worth some extra money (in relation to your budget). All of your dialogue comes from there so drop a few extra bucks on it if you can.
