CAG Star Trek Online Fleet/game discussion thread

what are you confused about? I'd be glad to help however I can. Also, if you're looking for a fleet invite, please pm me your STO account name ("@accountname") or find me in game "@manlai"

Hey everyone, any objections to closing this thread and opening a new one? We really should have updated info available in the first post. The outdated recruiting questionaire and policies are probably the most needed changes. Also, I made a CAG Fleet Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ceti-Alpha-Garrison-CAG-Fleet/155581644503467 or search for "Ceti Alpha Garrison" or "CAG Fleet" in Facebook. I figured we needed a little web presence and it makes for easier Q&A than a regular thread where things get buried. Personally, we all don't play a ton, but I think we can chat a little more. If you don't want to use your RL facebook or don't use facebook, simply create a new facebook account using your fictional character name - although it'd be cool to have a few RL pics and interaction there. I know you family people are dying to post baby pictures :p

In any case, it'd be great to hear from everyone!

About the game

Official Star Trek Online site
Star Trek Online is an MMORPG set in 2409, 22 years after the destruction of the Romulan homeworld (as seen in the latest Star Trek movie) and 30 years after Star Trek Nemesis. Both Spock actors - Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto - lend their voices to this game. It came out on February 2, 2010.

Subscriptions
The game comes with 30 days of playtime. The subscription rate is as follows:
1 month: $14.99
3 months: $41.97
6 months: $77.94
Lifetime: $299.99

Let's compare the subscription prices!

$15/month x 1 year = $180
$42/3 months x 1 year = $168
$78/6 months x 1 year = $156
$299/lifetime = The same cost as paying monthly for 20 months

Full subscription details are here: http://www.startrekonline.com/subscribe. Lifetime subscribers also get access to the Liberated Borg playable race (not to be confused with the bridge officer)

Retailer Exclusive Bonuses: some are available for purchase in the C-Store and some are still missing. Note that the retail game is dirt cheap now at every retailer. So if you want these items, either because you don't want to use the C-Store or because they're not available there, you can pick up the game with the item you want in that particular store and add the code to your account at: http://www.startrekonline.com/activate.

Amazon: Borg "efficient" Engineering Bridge Officer (no longer available with newer prints of the game, you can still get lucky and get it if they happened to ship you an older printing that included it)
GameStop: Constitution-class starship
Atari: Standard CE and DDE bonuses, nothing exclusive
Best Buy: Tribble and Targ pets
Direct2Drive: Multi-spatial Personal Shield
Steam: Chromodynamic Armor
SyFy: 500 Cryptic Points, Neodymium Deflector Dish (No longer available as the buy link lands you in the general Atari Store)
Target: TR-116 Ground Rifle (that crazy transporting bullet sniper rifle from DS9)
Walmart: 500 additional skill points (NOT over cap, it's basically like completing a 500 SP mission)

Retailer Bonuses, Worth it in the long run?
 • Amazon's Borg Bridge Officer is an awesome item. However, trying to acquire it through Amazon is a bit of a gamble. I recommend buying it directly from the C-Store after purchasing the game to be safe. Feeling lucky?
 • Steam's armor is still the only armor in the game that grants you Crit Chance, Crit Severity, Energy Resist, and + Energy Dmg all in the same armor. You get the Joined Trill with the DDE edition coupled with Steam's great download service makes this the DDE to get.
 • DDE's Joined Trill is a cool playable race. Slightly different from the normal "Trill" race available to anyone, you get bonuses to +3.3 Starship Energy Weapons Training, +3.3 Starship Projectile Weapons Training ,+3.3 Starship Warp Core Training, +3.3 Starship Engineering Training ,+6.7 Starship Operations Training. Nice bonuses, good race to have.
 • Gamestop TOS Enterprise is a great starter ship. You can also continually strip it bare and dismiss it and get it again from the store until you have your fill of TOS phasers that level with you. Given the game's cheap price at GS, this is the retail version to get. The CE is $5 more and has a few other perks like the Red Matter Capacitor and some additional uniforms.
 • CE's Red Matter Capacitor is still otherwise unavailable at the C-Store as of 3/22/2011. It gives +25 to your power levels for 10 seconds with a 5 minute recharge. It is a helpful item at any level but not a must-have.
 • Target's TR-116 rifle is a fun little thing. It still shoots through walls and is also not available at the C-Store. However, it is a MK 1 item so it does become underpowered a rank or 2 later. It is mostly a fun novel item at this point.
 • 500 SP from Walmart. No, just no. Play the game and get the same result in 2 missions.
 • The uniforms and emotes are fun extras, purely personal preference.
 • Best buy tribble is exclusive but you can breed better ones
 • Auto Defense Battery is a mostly useless item, as it clogs up a very useful tactical console slot. It is relevant at the tutorial because you get a little extra pew-pew at the start but you'll soon replace it with a helpful tactical console as soon as you hit Spacedock.
Full descriptions of preorder items: http://www.startrekonline.com/exclusives
Preorder FAQs: http://www.startrekonline.com/preorder-faq

Final Recommendations:
If you want it all and play it safe, I recommend getting the Steam DDE and the Gamestop CE. These 2 put together gives you most everything. Buy the Borg Bridge Officer from the C-Store and you're all set.
For the CAG minimalist, Gamestop's $7.99 is the best deal and still gives you the very cool TOS Enterprise.
For the inner Kenny Rogers in you, buy the Amazon CE and the Steam DDE. Maybe you'll get the Borg Bridge Officer with your Amazon CE, maybe not... who's knows? woooooooooooooo... You'll still get all regular CE bonuses.

Get those Atari spacebucks ready.
OMG!!!! YAY!!! BUT BOO FOR ATARI TOKENS!! Oh come on Cryptic just release a fucking expansion disc with all this shit for 30 bucks and make people happy.

You should mention the cheapest place to get the game client is Gamestop for 9.99. It should also include the Connie ship and 500 Cstore points ($15 dollar value)

http://www.gamestop.com/pc/games/star-trek-online/73923?ref=recpdp&cross=647663

Or pick up the CE for about 15 bucks from amazon. That should include the Borg Boff.
http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Onl...PTO8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300928874&sr=8-1

Or pick up the Digital Version for about 15 bucks from Amazon. That should include 500 Cstore points, Riva Tribble, Targ, automated defense turret ,Chromodynamic Armor and joined Trill.

Or even better pick up all 3 versions and stack them and play the game for 3 months with all the extras. That's the CAG way to play STO.

There's my ships' defense stats at cruising speed with no buffs. Plasma is at about 10% higher on my escort and 20% on my cruiser when I'm running STFs because I swap out resist consoles.
Now are all these pre order bonuses/exclusives pretty much obsolete with new items in game?
I think all the preorder items are still worth it. The Connie is pretty much Teir 1.5 with the extra slots it has, plus once you have one you gain access to an unlimited number of Blue Phaser beam arrays that scale with you.

The Borg Boff I think is the easiest way to get that Efficent boff skill folks pay millions of EC for. The chromodynamic is a good starting armor and the defense turrent did pretty well when I put it on my runabout. The Riva tribble is the only one that I think gives you 3 buffs.

The joined trill is nice to have so you can roll a Trill as KDF. And most people will want the TOS, DS9, and TNG clothes from the CE & DD.

Add in the extra Cstore points you get from the editions above and I think its in most people's best interest to buy all three editions. Add into the fact some items like the defense bat, Red Mat capacitor, and chromodynamic armor aren't avilable in the Cstore I think its worth it. I'm a Lifer and even without the need of 3 months play time I think I came out way ahead by buying all 3 versions.

I made a few changes to the draft from your input, thanks! I removed all references to the 500 Atari Tokens as none of them offer that now. The GS versions and/or the DDE edition are the best buys if you want most of the good perks. The Borg Bridge Officer is no longer available with newer copies of the game from Amazon. If you buy it from there, you could get lucky with one of the older copies that includes it but it is no longer a given. The safest way is just going to the C-Store, where it is pretty cheap anyway.

If you score a CE off amazon there is still a chance you'll get the borg Boff, but for sure you'll get the TNG, DS9 costumes and Red Matter capacitor. The costumes are worth 7 bucks, and the capacitor is still exclusive to the CE. Plus you get the book, pin and 30 days play time that make it worth the 15 bucks in my eyes.

Well, the Amazon picture changes since the cheapest new one is a different merchant that's fulfilled by amazon while the actual amazon sold one is $18.

Does the Borg BOFF from the Amazon CE also include the Klingon version?

On a side note, what's that game they're playing in the first video here: http://www.syfy.com/startrekonline/. I'd love to play that game...

A massive TOS bundle came out on the C-Store today. TOS fans should be happy. :) It's expensive at 1400 points, but you get a crazy amount of content with it. There's a whole TOS ship interior with stuff like interactive blast shutters and Jeffries tubes. (I don't think you actually get to crawl in them but you can use them to move between areas, like in that Devidian mission.)

Also they've dated the Bajoran uniforms and Oberth ship for April.

I'll probably be on a little tonight or this weekend to try the new shuttle crafting missions.

No extra ship slot with shuttle purchase unfortunately :(

Yea! Craftable Delta Flyer is live! It's about time. I'll probably do it tonight as well. They still won't fix my dodgy cloaking device...

ooo I want to craft the DF! :D

The mission is not really a mission. The daily mission just has you scanning anomalies and the overall mission is repeating the daily 10 times.

That TOS bundle is too cool. Will wait for it to go on sale before getting it though.

OP draft looks good, Manlai. But you need to use unordered lists instead of hyphenating lines. Just click Go Advanced and you'll see the list buttons next to the centering/alignment buttons.

Like this:
 • Star
 • Trek
 • Online
 • rocks!
That TOS bundle is too cool. Will wait for it to go on sale before getting it though.
It's actually a better value now than if you wait for one of their 20% off sales, since right now the three new TOS costume packs are included. Eventually the bundle will just have the retro interior, shuttle, and phaser (which is just a reskin of an existing mission reward).

Oy! But that price is crazy sauce. Will think about it... As Manlai seems to note, I just haven't had time for the game lately. My writing is going great though!

Sorry Manlai about last night I had the caps lock on and fighting in the war zone (the mission where I have to free 5 captives from borg groups. God that mission is annoying.
I think my chat channel was not working because I did say YO.

Does anybody have a guest pass? I know the Collector's Edition has three, not sure another way to get them but I'd really appreciate it. Game looks like a lot of fun.

Also, does STO on Steam include game time with your purchase?

yep, all editions come with 30 days game time with purchase.

remember to check in with the fleet Facebook page and comment as needed.

Wow, that huge TOS bundle is apparently eligible for the current 20% off sale. The sale goes until Monday morning.

Also the Oberth is confirmed to be a T1 with some lame, console-based shields/aux ability.:cry::cry:

Here we go again.......

The only real gripe I have with this game right now is the damn C-Store.

I don't think there will ever be a Star Trek game that finds mainstream popularity, but the game where it is now is really good, especially with the mission creator. And if you're one of the few fans who doesn't enjoy it, at least the official forums provide a great outlet for nitpicking every single problem/canon inconsistency in the game to death. :)

Also... Why, hello there.

Hey guys there is a patch tonight to enable daily rewards for doing foundry missions. I think that means I might change my lvl 15 toon to UGC only and see how that goes. I'll let you know if I find any cool missions.

That's really cool. The release notes say that there will be a few reward options for that mission and one of them is emblems, so hooray! Finally a fresh new way to earn emblems.

By the way, I tried that Ferengi mission you mentioned ("Brains Before Bounty," I think) and it was very cool. I haven't had time to really dig into the Foundry and look for more missions, but it's great to see people already putting together more story-based episodes with it.

I made it to level 51 last night! YAY!!

Hmm..now what ship to get ? I am thinking of the retrofitted Defiant ...but is the cloak worth it?

btw, has anyone seen Spidermitchentf's ship charts on the main forums?

Can anyone provide the link to retrieve the game password? I finally got my online account access for forums and store, but no matter how many pages I try, I can't seem to find the one to reset the password to access the game.

Congrats!

Since I only have Fed characters, it was cool to play around with a (non-combat) cloak, but it's not that useful. It's sort of nice for ambushing enemies but also drains massive amounts of shield power the longer you use it, so you're pretty vulnerable right after decloaking. Eventually I switched back to my advanced escort. If you're a tactical officer, the Defiant probably makes the most sense out of the three vice admiral ships though, so you might as well get it.
Can anyone provide the link to retrieve the game password? I finally got my online account access for forums and store, but no matter how many pages I try, I can't seem to find the one to reset the password to access the game.
Try this: https://www.startrekonline.com/user/password
That link takes me back to the STO homepage and I can't find a reset password link anywhere. I can only find it for the forum/store account.
Try clicking the "enter site" button and then going to that link again. The STO site is kind of annoying and likes to redirect to their splash page if you're not logged in.

Your game account is the same as your forum account though, so if you can reset your forum password you should be good.

I'd probably just stick with an assault/star cruiser, honestly. The VA ships are sort of weird in that they're not straight tier upgrades. You basically trade one of your higher ranking BOff abilities for the unique ship ability and a relatively useless ensign station.

I've heard the refit Intrepid is almost overpowered in PvP because of its armor ability, but since I don't do any PvP, I eventually went back to my DSSV/recon ships on my science VA.

I haven't tried the refit Galaxy so I can't comment on how well saucer separation works, but I think I'd pass just because of the awful turn rate. :)

I figured it out finally. This is my first MMO, so I was using the character name for my account name by accident. :wall:

Glad you got it sorted out. :) If you want to join the CAG fleet, just post your character(s) and account name and we'll get you an invite. I'm @metaly in game.

Big info dump today on Season 4's ground combat changes. I was already really looking forward to this, but now... :hot::hot::hot:

1. Optional Over the Shoulder Aiming Mode with Reticle (several sources and screenshots)
 • It's in, and it looks great. The reticule will change colors based on a friendly/enemy target, and it will have some UI on it that shows the charge status of your currently equipped weapons secondary fire. When you press C to zoom you'll go into a scope like view with a zoom for ease of aiming at more distant targets.

3. Weapon Tweaks

a. Shot speeds have been increased (Iron Avenger forum post)
 • This is very true from an FX and from a system standpoint. The fx travel faster from your weapon to your target, and they fx themselves look cooler and more IP.
 • System side, the delay between clicking a power and it actually firing his been significantly reduced.

5. Additional Multi-Directional Running Animations (April Engineering Report)
 • Not only are you getting different running animations, almost all combat animations are getting an update. Firing a hand fired weapon has several different animation that make everything look more fluid, as well as an "aimed" animation where you hold the phaser with 2 hands. These animations differ from rifles, which differ from assault weapons, and all of them look way more fluid, realistic, and just plain cool.

6. Custom Kits (dstahl forum post and April Ask Cryptic both mention kit changes)
 • This is something we're looking at, but don't expect it for season 4.

Some additional changes include different ranges for different weapon types. For example, pistol have the shortest range but can fire the fastest so they have a higher general DPS. Rifles hit harder per shot and have longer range than a pistol, but you can fire them slightly less often. Things like that are going to add some really cool variety to the ground game.

We're also speeding up the ground combat in general. We want critters to be easier to kill so individual encounters don't take as long. We're also working on touching up player health/shield levels so ground combat feels more exciting and pvp becomes a little more fast paced.

The fx, as i've mentioned before, are all being updated. The phasers and disruptor beams look right in our opinion, so for those energy types we've focused on the look and size of bolts and other non beam weapon types. The other energy types are getting make overs to make them look more interesting.

Another note for people that aren't interested in the shooter style of gameplay. We are still maintaining the regular mode you are familiar with, but you gain the benefit of all the new animations, fx, audio, and sped up game play.

Sounds amazing. I was expecting this to be kind of a half-assed reticle/mouselook option tacked onto the current combat gameplay, but they're making a lot of surprising changes. Can't wait to have some real differentiation between weapons, plus updated animations and FX are always fun.

Reruns of the featured episodes will also come back in May. So you can score that cane, Breen and Reman BO once again. They also said you can now earn emblems and there are some new items thrown in the mix as well.

Weird stuff going on this weekend. First, there's 50% off all ships in the C-Store. Not sure if that applies to ship costumes as well. That's a pretty great deal, although I think that Excelsior's still a little too pricey for me. I wish it was available for emblems.

And speaking of that... starting tomorrow morning, Q will be handing out 2X boosts to mission rewards, including marks and emblems holy fuck!

I wonder what the occasion is.

The Q boost this weekend should cover it. He'll double skill points, which are STO's XP. The boost is renewable as soon as it runs out, so basically it's a 2XP weekend. You can also buy 1- and 8-hour skill point boost items from the C-Store if you want to go that route, and they supposedly stack with the Q boost.

I got turned into a statue.
So I read the website and I need to visit Q at spacedock to get this?
Indeed.

@itdefx - what did you decide on for ships? The Defiant-R is a solid dps ship and the cloak is useful for alpha strikes and idling in kerrat ;). It turns a bit better than its counterparts but that's not too significant. Putting an engi in an escort is perfectly viable since your EPS ability will keep power levels high for your strikes and your other abilities will keep you alive a little longer than a tac. There is an annoying cloak bug where you decloak whenever you get a pop up dialogue box that they refuse to acknowledge and fix. You don't need to be engi/cruiser or tac/escort to be viable so don't let that hang you up. That being said, some of your engineer SP skills are useful in buffing BOFF abilities so the engi/cruiser setup does have that going for it.

The shield drain thing metaly described is not exactly accurate. When you cloak your shields drop to zero power. When you decloak you gain a 5 seconds weapons buff and your shield power recharges from zero. Your shield STRENGTH will almost immediately be at the same level as when you cloaked. I've never had difficulty getting hammered during this recharge period and it can easily be overcome if you hit emergency power to shields as you begin your strike.

@everyone - I provide regular updates on the fleet facebook page so please contribute to the page when you can. Fleet Starbases are coming this summer so we need to start socking away more EC. New items are constantly being added to the fleet bank for general member use, just leave some EC in when you take something.
