Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles (PSP) Thread

Just beat the game. For those curious, there is a bad and good ending. I got the bad ending. To get the good ending
Apperently shafts ghost is out there somewhere and you have to save the maidens to get to him? No clue what that means, it just pops up after you beat it.
Stage 4 is pretty difficult no matter which path you take. I pretty much breezed through the game up until this level. Died twice on it last night before I even reached a boss so hopefully today will be kinder to me.

I think the whole challenge behind this game so far for me is learning how long it takes to start or finish an animation. Stage 4 just has so many new aspects added to it that it is taking me longer to recognize patterns and to time things up.
yeah im in the same situation, the first three levels werent so bad for me up until level 4

i gave it a second try and i found an interesting path...

when you get to the part where you have to climb up the stair but the stone/metal balls are falling, you can just drop down to the very bottom and then it the next room to the right there is a lift that will take you all the way up and then you can go to the top easily

I believe it's in Stage 3, but -
How do you keep that red wall down long enough to get in and out and grab that music orb?

Btw, the Werewolf boss was friggin easy (all I really did was just stand there and let him charge at me, one hit will knock him back), just about all the boss fights so far have (I'm in the middle of Stage 4, I think)
The fact that they flinch and move back makes most of the difference IMO

I'm really loving this game. I'm up to Chapter 6 now and even though I tend do die a lot, the levels are short enough that I don't mind replaying them. There's certainly something to be said about a straight-forward Castlevania that doesn't have such an epic scale.

I've unlocked the original version of Rondo now and it's great to see what they changed for this new version.

Yeah, I made it to level 7 last night. I kinda wonder if the guys who wrote the GameInformer review had ever played a video game, ever. I mean, there's certainly a challenge here (Level 4 was obnoxious for a bit), but the bosses are all pretty straight forward once you figure it out. I beat the boss of Level 5,
Death
, without even taking a hit once I figured it out. Level 6 was a ton of fun too.

I'm allmost starting to hope that the new DS Castlevania is level-based rather than Metroidvania style. I really dig doable, level-based games. For as great as I think Aria and Dawn of Sorrow are, the "explore the castle!" mechanic done in every 2D game since SotN is starting to get stale I think. I'd rather see some variety (more-so than PoR had) to the gameplay before they really run it into the ground.

You have to rescue a girl named Tera in Stage 3' or Stage 3 alt. You can get to her by destroying the wall under the first door in that area (break it from top to bottom). After you break that wall, go through it and take the staircase down to her. After you save her, she will give you the ability to destroy the red skeleton walls.

I certainly agree with you there, I really do hope that IGA/Konami try something new with the series. While I enjoyed it, playing through DOS made me start to realize that I'm getting tired with the SoTN-style gameplay. POR seemed like a baby-step in the right direction, I really enjoyed the team mechanic and story (it also helped that I loved Bloodlines I suppose) but it also made me want to see what else they could do with the series. Of course, even if they came out with Castlevania: Craptacular, I'd still pick it up anyway.

Anyway, I got the game last night and played for like, three hours. It just feels great playing a straight up level-based Castlevania, reminds me of why I loved the series so much as a kid. I'm also not dying as much as I thought I was :). Glad to hear everyone else is enjoying the game!
I'm not sure what to make of the remix of Vampire Killer (stage 3) but hearing the tune sure is nostalgic.
Actually it's a remix of Bloody Tears.
Actually it's a remix of Bloody Tears.
damn, I thought I was wrong on that but when I was talking ot my friend the other day he didn't correct me.

Well it's almost impossible to destroy the Bloodlines song, and I enjoyed the remix as much as the original, perhaps even more :p

The main thing I love about this game is all the alternate paths, that really ups the replay value of the game, not to mention the alternate bosses as well :D

Thanks for the tip Kain, looks like I'll be backtracking a bit after I pass the game.

Well, I'm a bit bummed about the version of SOTN on this disc. I distinctly remember Iga promising that the game would include a true widescreen mode (which is something I wished the XBLA version had), but alas, it's still pillarboxed. Bleh.

*ACK*

I don't understand why there is no full-screen support. The PS1 emulator for PSP has zoom, full and other options. It's an inexcusable omission. I hope someone releases a hack to fix it (even if it looks like shit stretched out), or Konami releases a patch you can download (seriously doubt it).

I was going to buy this just for the remake of RoB, so I'm not totally disappointed by no widescreen for SOTN.

Yeah, no widescreen support for SotN sucks but I already have my original PS1 copy installed on the memory stick, so I've been playing that. I mainly purchased this for the RoB remake anyways.

heh, same goes for the remix of the 1st stage in Castlevania 1. it was cool to hear, but it lacks the character of the NES version. Would've sounded much stronger if they didn't pave over a lot of the notes in the song.
I don't understand why there is no full-screen support. The PS1 emulator for PSP has zoom, full and other options.
See, I didn't just want it to stretch the 4:3 picture to fill the 16:9 horizontal width, like you can do with the PSX emulators. I wanted it to actually show me more of the game world to the left and right, than I would see standing in the exact same location playing the current 4:3 versions of the game. That is to say, true Hor+ widescreen.

Oh well. It just sucks that Konami has now utterly wasted two perfect and completely appropriate opportunities to deliver a true widescreen version of SOTN, and they probably won't ever have another opportunity to do so. Sigh...

i just want to know, how do i get my PS1 copy of SOTN onto my memory card???

and when r they gonna release this in the UK?

Got around to playing the upper version of Stage 4. I made it to the boss I think on the lower path but died. Tried playing through the stage again with Maria and took the upper path this time......upper path is not fun!

the part where you have to jump between spikes and there are those floating eye things, and then later the fleamen, and then at the end the freakin snake skeleton! GRR!!

-edit-
I just went through both paths of Stage 4 with Maria. The lower path where you fight the floating skull with the shadow lady on it, even though I beat it and the red orb was forming at the end, there was a black silhouette that appeared for a split second and a guy was laughing in the background right before it dropped. I picked it up and ended up on the same Stage 5 as I did when I beat the upper path. Was that supposed to mean anything?

If it makes a difference, I skipped the part in the level where you jump over those saw blades, and there's a switch there that activates a stairway (a fleaman is sitting on top of it). I didn't go up that part, but later on when there is the stack of skull heads shooting fire at you, past that is a stairway that you can get to via the "upside down" swinging platform. I went up that to fight the upper boss. In that same area though there is also a big wall there with a breakable piece on the bottom corner right under the stairway. I got past that wall and ended up going all the way to the end and that is where the lower boss is. Btw past the big wall and before the lower boss, there are some platforms above you and a candle at the end of that path. That is where the original Rondo of Blood game item is at.

Anyway I dunno how to get to the lower path stage 5 if there is one

If you don't know how, then you're gonna have to visit a PS1 ripping and PSP hacking site for that.
Started the game at 4 PM, breezed through it and unlocked everything in the main game by 5:30 PM. :)

I love this game...
show off lol :applause:

seriously, cant someone just tell me?

1) hack your psp with custom firmware
2) rip your copy of psx game and convert for psp use

what he says is true lol
It's beyond what any of us can (or probably want to) explain in detail in one post. With a good search you should be able to find resources on this everywhere.

you need custom firmware, a program that rips CD images, and popstation. I don't think it's allowed to talk about on this board so that's all I'll say.
seriously, cant someone just tell me?
Assuming you're running Windows, there should be some good tutorials out there. Dig around, follow directions very carefully and you should be fine.

If you happen to find a detailed explanation of how to do it on a Mac, lemme know. I need me some PSP Firepro G.

grabbed a gamesave from GameFaqs with Rondo and SOTN unlocked. Then I deleted his RondoRemake file.

So now I have both extra games unlocked and can play through everything myself.

So in case anyone bought this for SOTN or Rondo this works as the unlocked games stay there even if you delete the save file in the game.

Okay, I unlocked Symphony of the Night on Dracula X Chronicles and I played a little bit past the first boss, so not too far... here's my notes on this version of the game:

- Frame rate is better than the PS1 version. This is liquid smooth. I can all but guarantee that all the slowdown in the PS1 version is gone (and the slowdown got ing bad in the PS1 version.)

- A lot of the sound effects have changed. I don't want to say that's a bad thing, because they're not bad... just different.

- The music sounds at least as good as it did on the PS1 version. All the notes are crystal clear and it doesn't sound compressed or anything. Phew.

- The English voice overs are crap. The Japanese voice overs are thankfully fantastic. The dialog is much better this time around, and it's nice that the game isn't such a joke everytime somebody speaks.

Haven't seen any new items or anything yet, but again, I'm only 10 minutes or so into SOTN. Still, if I had to call it right now... I'd say this is the definitive version of SOTN just because the Jappo voice-overs go a long way, and the frame rate is noticeably better. Considering that SOTN is probably one of my favorite games of all time, if not my absolute favorite, I'm very happy, to say the least.

Oh, and that remakes kewl too... and stuff.

I'll have a real review in a few days most likely.

Boooooooo, you didn't unlock em' legit, there goes some of the fun of the game for you. I find unlocking things more satisfactory instead of "cheating" ;O

As for both of the unlockable games, they both run smooth, and I have yet to encounter any hiccups at all. I believe the SOTN is the Saturn Version since Maria is available, although I don't know yet if you can run just to verify (Saturn Version allowed you to run, I think it was a relic you needed to obtain first), but I think those two extra areas should be accessable as well.

I would've liked crisper graphics if that was possible (at times, it feels kinda....blurry), and of course that true Widescreen.

Naw, it's not the Saturn version. If it was, it'd suck and have shitty 3D graphics. AFAIK, Maria plays completely differently in the PSP versions, and I know that the Saturn areas aren't in here.

It's the japanese version of SotN that this port is based off of. That's why Maria is in it but no the Saturn areas (and because IGA said NO!)

Well I didn't get everything in 90mins like someone else. I am however at the Dracula fight with his final form. I still need to go pick up all the records n' stuff.

I'm disappointed that this remake is almost a pixel for pixel (polygon for polygon) translation of Rondo of Blood. A lot of reviewers complain about the basic controls and high level of difficulty/memorization. Honestly, they should have went the Capcom route and really remade the game. That's what made Ultimate GnG (although not a remake, you get my point), MM:pU, and MMX so good. They actually made the games more fun to play than their originals. Playing the remake is kinda comparable to playing the original.

It's even more silly when you think about the fact that the original Rondo is included in the mix. They could have significantly legnthen the levels too in the remake.

HOWEVER!!!!!!!!

It's still a lot of fun to play. It's cool to compare both games to one another to see the little differences here and there. I stopped playing Zelda PH, Spyro TEN, Ratchet and Clank Going Commando, and F-Zero GP Legend to play this game. I really love my Castlevania.

Um, no. Maria was very playable in the Japanese PSone version of Symphony of the Night. That would make this a modified port, I guess.

Um, no.

Maria was never playable in ANY PS1 version of SOTN. She was only in the Saturn version. She's been completely redone for this modified game because the Saturn version of her is junk.

FurryCurry is mostly correct. The game itself is based on the JP PS1 version, which is why the Saturn areas were not included in the package. Also, Iga said the extra levels in the Saturn version were not up to par compared to the rest of the game.

I would've liked the most content available given to me though. I have yet to play those extra parts, even though they were small. My curiousity has sky rocketed by watching them on youtube :/

It would've been more friggin' awesome if they had taken some time to elaborate on those two areas and tidy em' up for this version ;O

Also, is there any chance you could run in this version, or is that something in the Saturn Version they chose to cut out as well?

Oh yea, do you have to buy the spells now in order to execute them? I've been doing the motions with no dice and am assuming that's the deal now.

LOL at ppl thinking that Maria had been playable in the PS1 iterations.

This is a BRAND new Maria, one that hasn't been playable before. The only thing similar to the Sega Saturn version of Maria is her look. She's completely different.

Can't wait til the new DS game gets announced... Which should be soon. :)
Lame. I thought they were making SotN 3d too. =(
That would've been frickin awesome, maybe they're saving it for another remake :/, I doubt it.

I just got the game today at Fry's on sale. I'll play it sometime. I'm probably going to download a game save to unlock SotN, since I rarely have time to beat most of my games.

Pfffft, unlock it yourself dude ;O

It's really not that hard :/

heh heh

Unlocking SOTN was sucky for me. Kept dyin on the way up to the area while
trying to retain the axe subweapon
. Unlocking Rondo was not so much, but the
floating eye and the flying skull enemies totally sucked -_- . Especially the part where the fleamen are droppin down on those balls on the stairway up.

:/

Took me like 5 minutes to unlock em both once I found out where they were...heh.

I find the key subweapon funny. Especially if you try to "unleash it's fury" with triangle ;O

I kick platformers asses once I warm up to them

I guess I just suck then lol
I was really messed up by the medusa heads
on the way up to get sotn
and the
stupid flea balls and the circling skull things in that one area in Stage4 for rondo. Plus the stupid eyes.

gettin Maria was kinda annoying too...so many fishmen made me want to puke. Oh god and those stupid floating eyes again. lol.
Didn't unleash the power of the key with triangle though. All I did was just chuck the damn thing through the door and it magically opened lol.

Anybody know where the (presumably virgin) maiden sacrifices are to (I think) get past the re-erecting red skull wall things? And anybody also know how to get through the big crystal in Stage 4?
