Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)
...and Astro City has really slowed to a crawl.
:whistle2:s For the last 2 years, Astro City has been on it's most consistent schedule ever. Busiek has been doing a 4 issue arc generally followed by a month off then a one-shot, a month off and then another 4 issue arc.

Read Planetary. 'Nuff said.

I forgot to mention that I'm a huge fan of Concrete by Paul Chadwick. Is there anything similar to that in tone or style that you guys can recommend?
Hey, Rapsodist...didn't know you were a comic book aficianado (junkie) like moi! Nice to see a fellow LA dude reading the great American artform.

Let's see...Fables, check. Walking Dead, check. Everything that you've mentioned you've dug, I've dug, so we definitely have similar tastes. I haven't checked out that Kirkman/McFarlane overhyped new title, Haunt or Shroud or whatever the hell it is, because come on, at first glance that looks like Spawn Reloaded/Part 2. You like Astro City, check out Super Gods. Just started so you should be able to get issue 1 and 2 still.

Oh and get Ennis's The Boys. MUST. GET. THE. BOYS. Let's see, what else can't I live without? Darkest Night, but only the main limited series, Green Lantern, and Green Lantern Corps. All Star Batman (Morrison, not Miller) has been fun, as expected. Read All Star Superman if you haven't...that was just sooo much fun, reminded me of the whacky Superman and DC in general stories of the 50's and 60's.

Marvel? Thor was soooooo slow to get going, but now it's getting tasty. JMS, as with all his work IMHO, drags 1 issue worth of comic out into 6 parts, but that's just how it is. Oh and the current Ultimates. Get all 4 or 5 issues. The fourth storyline is bringing it back to its former glory, back when Millar and Hitch just blew the roof off the super hero team for the new century/millenium. And if you haven't read Ultimates 1 and 2 (basically, years 1 and 2...13 issues each)...then get the trades or better yet the Marvel hardcovers, or the omnibus if it exists. Simply fantastic. The third series really fucked everything up, and the Ultimate universe has indeed been almost all shit for the past few years. Marvel is just pumping crap right now...really reminds me of the worst of the 90's...far too many limited series for the most useless and worthless characters, too much crossover nonsense, ridiculous prices and the damn bogus limited/incentive variants.
Hey karkyco, you learn something new everyday! I am indeed a comic book aficionado. I grew up on comics like pretty much every other red-blooded American male, then "grew up" and forsook the hobby, and eventually came back when I read Maus as an adult and realized the potency of the medium.

I did read All-Star Superman and am sad that it's over. I actually wasn't feeling it for the first few issues but it slowly grew on me. I'm glad I gave that one a chance! I didn't realize that All-Star Batman had changed hands--I may have to check it out in that case. Never heard of The Boys, will be sure to give that a look.

I have to be honest, I read the first volume of The Ultimates, and didn't really like it at all. I've been meaning to pick up the next volume and give the series another chance just 'cause everybody else raves about it.

Definitely never heard of Super Gods. I tried Googling it but couldn't find pertinent information. Who's the creator/writer/artist/publisher?
You should pick up Unwritten. Its fairly new, so I bet you could pick up the back issues fairly easily. Its a Vertigo title.
Unwritten, huh? Sounds like a riff on Harry Potter. It's Vertigo though, so I'm down to give it a try. Thanks for the rec!

I guess I probably don't follow comics as heavily/frequently as you do, so I'm thinking in bigger blocks of years. All I know is that I've seen like, what, 15 issues in the past decade? Sure would be nice to see Astro City really pick up some steam again! I re-read issues #1 and #1/2 pretty regularly.

I do have a friend with the entire run of Planetary who's always telling me to borrow the books. Will have to do that sometime!
FLOL, exactly what I was thinking. Either some remaining cells on the arm regrew the entire body, or some sinister scientists grafted the adamantium arm onto some spunky high school kid, and hilarity ensues. Although, doesn't the ad show him having two sets of claws? Just walking to school with claws popped out, yeah very inconspicuous. Just more shit from the Mighty Marvel House of Ideas.

God why do I still buy so much of their crap? MUST...STOP!!!
I know i have stopped buying Ultimate comics, cept for Ultimate Avengers.

I'll download the Universe X and see what kind of comic it's going to be, before i commit to buying. But i doubt i will like it. The art looks dumb and Jeph Loeb is writing, so i expect a dumb story as well.

Is it weird my favorite Geoff Johns title right now is Superman: Secret Origins?

Plus Captain America Reborn #6 really makes me question why they felt the need to make it a 6 parter story wise. Plus Steve's visions of the future
oh boy! Marvel vs. War of the Worlds!
Is it weird my favorite Geoff Johns title right now is Superman: Secret Origins?
I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but it is pretty damn good.

It almost feels like best Superman stories are always about his early years and this one is no different. Though I like Johns' take on how Metropolis is basically just a hopeless place to be and everyone fending for themselves. That and how Superman is written as the beacon of hope everyone needed, but are so slow to embrace.

Plus Gary Frank's art and facial expressions on everyone just adds so much more.

Oh and Daredevil NOW feels like it's starting to pick up pace.

Has anybody been reading Spawn since that coma dude became spawn?

I haven't been buying them since it was starting to suck, but it feel off the planet.

I saw another UniverseX ad with blond wolvie with claws on both hands, then i saw a gray hulk behind him. :(

You mean Killraven's timeline?
Has green Hulk become more intelligent lately? Say since around the World War Hulk time?
Nope.

Matter of fact, Bruce can't turn into Hulk anymore, or chooses not to, don't remember which.

Well in that case, a certain movie which i can't discuss yet is fucked up.

What happened in the comic to do that? Did they separate Hulk and Banner or something?

anybody else think the ending of Kick Ass was kind of lame? kind of a letdown after waiting so long. i like the seige so far its cool to see some of the lesser pushed/used characters coming out and stepping up like the taskmaster hes always been a favorite of mine i didnt like when they tried to get him to be able to copy mutant powers but as is hes one of the coolest marvel villans. like deadpool with common sense.

Kick Ass was made to sell for the movie rights. It being a comic is essentially a secondary benefit. The same goes for Millar's new series Nemesis.

damn shame the story was pretty interesting until the last comic.

Haven't got the last issue of Kick Ass yet, but yeah, they were shoping around for a movie deal well before issue #1 came out.

Completely forgot about Killraven's universe. Though yes, basically.

I Guess Marvel may try and pull that out like they did with Kamandi in FInal Crisis.

Why did you have to mention that? I don't mind Final Crisis, but that always reminds me of Countdown...

Hey those issues mock me everytime I go near my long boxes. You're not only one living off of regret for buying into that.
I sometimes think Mark Millar is just full of himself. He annoys me just as much as Bendis and Quesada.
Considering his work ethic and how on time he is with all his titles. Yeah, it's safe to believe that.

Joey Q. is just a friggin idiot though.
I sometimes think Mark Millar is just full of himself. He annoys me just as much as Bendis and Quesada.
The first two I'm indifferent about, but Quesada is an asshole.

I'm exhausted of Dark Reign and seeing Norman Osborn in every Marvel comic. I'd like to see Marvel take a year or two and just focus on each character's individual story.

Well. They are exploring The Sentry's origin now.

But i can see that Norman is going to break really soon and things will be back to normal.

its pretty obvious hes not going to be able to keep it together much longer add to that the fact that theres plenty of people under him who want him dead i could see norman either being killed off or incapacitated so that someone else could take his place. ares would obviously leave since all he cares about is his son but itd be cool to see daken take over. im still curious though wtf is going to happen with night thrashers body. also if you can close whole bodies who do so many heros/villans not get new limbs made for them after they lose them?

I collected Hulk during the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk arcs, and from reading them, Green Hulk was of average intelligence, not the primal savage "Hulk Smash" that most folks associate with the Hulk. During the arcs, it seems as if the Hulk personality asserted dominance over the Banner personality, you only saw Banner in a couple panels during the two arcs. Dropped Hulk after the disappointing end to WWH.
I hate Sentry with the power of a million exploding suns...
Holy crap, has anyone gotten Siege #2 yet?

Sentry goes mental and does something totally unexpected, and probably more reasons why to hate him. :p

I like him, but he's way to overpowered. He needs to be nerfed.

But if you read the last New Avengers i think, they are exploring more of Sentry's real origins making him look like a drug addict criminal.

My problem isn't that he's overpowered. I mean I read mostly DC comics the home of Superman, Power Girl, Spectre, and any number of characters that could lay waste to the entire Marvel Universe without much effort. My problem is that no one knows how to write for a character like that over at Marvel. Every time the Sentry is brought into play it goes something like this:

Osborne: Ok Bob, go get them!
Sentry: *goes in and is immediately taken out of the fight*
Osborne: Avengers assemble!

Like what the fuck is the point? So instead of bothering to figure out a way to make a character like that interesting, they use a plot point to remove him so they don't have to be bothered.

lol, strong hate on Siege.

I don't even like the fact that Norse mythology is in Marvel and that this story is based off of it. But i am glad something is happening that will bring things back to normal and Osborn out of power.

The only time i liked Sentry was when Hulk came back to earth after WWH and they fought. He seemed like a wuss then fighting Hulk, but now he's all power with no consequence.

He basically reminds me of the robot Thor in Civil War. Actually, this whole story reminds me of Civil War. :p
Marvel sucks at events.
This is true...

And each time an earth shattering event happens, the next two events after it returns all that was originally done back to normal.

Same, here. I did collect when they had the RED Hulk, but that got old very fast and I dropped that title. Now, Hulk has 2 sons and a daughter! I thought there was just the Skarr, son of Hulk.

The ending of Siege, quality-wise, hasn't been well received by other Marvel writers. IMO, in the end they'll just be glad to not be so tied in to an overarching storyline a la Dark Reign.

I Already have little faith in Marvel with how they're hyping up the return Kitty Pryde in X-Men. I Like it being a surprise like Colossus and how he came back. Still ranks as one of my favorite X-Men moments.

I guess i'm just used to the more savage Hulk then, he just seemed way more intelligent than i remember the Hulk being. I'm not used to seeing him carry on complex conversations with people.

:applause: Exactly!! It seems they hype every story just to sell comics, and then to sell more they have variant covers!! Then when it is all said and done, everything goes back to normal (the way it was before the great earth shaking story). The dead have always come back at Marvel.

Unfortunately, DC decided they were lagging behind moneywise and started doing the same crap! :bomb:

I won't even get started on the whole Bruce Wayne:whistle2:#......:bomb:

At least Blackest Night gave me a realization that there are alot of dead characters over in DC. Marvel wise only one I can think of now is probably just Uncle Ben. Though Brightest Day I'm skeptic on simply because I want the dead to stay dead. Does DC REALLY need Aquaman back? To be honest I didn't even know he was dead until Blackest Night #0.

As for Bruce Wayne, well...

I Don't want to talk about it. I'll still pick it up and be confused as hell, but I prefer him dead as opposed to fighting time.

yeah the whole dead bruce thing has gotten even more confusing. so tim thinks hes lost in time but dick thinks hes dead
and is now going to use a lazarus pit to bring him back
? so which is it is he dead or in time? i do like the diff characters in the universe being temporary lanterns i hope the scarecrow and guy guardner stay with their new respective rings. red rings are cool.

Have they confirmed who's coming back after BN? As for Bruce, we'll see. I do like Morrison so I'll hold judgment.

Morrison is waaaay too hit (WE3, Marvel Boy, JLA, All Star Superman) or miss (Final Crisis, Batman RIP, Seven Soldiers).

I liked Final Crisis, but I'll give you Batman RIP and Seven Soldiers as sucking.

I also tend to give him a lot of credit because of his X-Men run. I LOVED his run on New X-Men.

It had Martha and Quentin Quire!
Oh I definitely read it, and that part was hilarious. I had been looking forward to the Jubilee section, and I ended up liking the other part more.
