I forgot to mention that I'm a huge fan of Concrete by Paul Chadwick. Is there anything similar to that in tone or style that you guys can recommend?
Hey, Rapsodist...didn't know you were a comic book aficianado (junkie) like moi! Nice to see a fellow LA dude reading the great American artform.
Let's see...Fables, check. Walking Dead, check. Everything that you've mentioned you've dug, I've dug, so we definitely have similar tastes. I haven't checked out that Kirkman/McFarlane overhyped new title, Haunt or Shroud or whatever the hell it is, because come on, at first glance that looks like Spawn Reloaded/Part 2. You like Astro City, check out Super Gods. Just started so you should be able to get issue 1 and 2 still.
Oh and get Ennis's The Boys. MUST. GET. THE. BOYS. Let's see, what else can't I live without? Darkest Night, but only the main limited series, Green Lantern, and Green Lantern Corps. All Star Batman (Morrison, not Miller) has been fun, as expected. Read All Star Superman if you haven't...that was just sooo much fun, reminded me of the whacky Superman and DC in general stories of the 50's and 60's.
Marvel? Thor was soooooo slow to get going, but now it's getting tasty. JMS, as with all his work IMHO, drags 1 issue worth of comic out into 6 parts, but that's just how it is. Oh and the current Ultimates. Get all 4 or 5 issues. The fourth storyline is bringing it back to its former glory, back when Millar and Hitch just blew the roof off the super hero team for the new century/millenium. And if you haven't read Ultimates 1 and 2 (basically, years 1 and 2...13 issues each)...then get the trades or better yet the Marvel hardcovers, or the omnibus if it exists. Simply fantastic. The third series really

ed everything up, and the Ultimate universe has indeed been almost all shit for the past few years. Marvel is just pumping crap right now...really reminds me of the worst of the 90's...far too many limited series for the most useless and worthless characters, too much crossover nonsense, ridiculous prices and the damn bogus limited/incentive variants.
Hey karkyco, you learn something new everyday! I am indeed a comic book aficionado. I grew up on comics like pretty much every other red-blooded American male, then "grew up" and forsook the hobby, and eventually came back when I read Maus as an adult and realized the potency of the medium.
I did read All-Star Superman and am sad that it's over. I actually wasn't feeling it for the first few issues but it slowly grew on me. I'm glad I gave that one a chance! I didn't realize that All-Star Batman had changed hands--I may have to check it out in that case. Never heard of The Boys, will be sure to give that a look.
I have to be honest, I read the first volume of The Ultimates, and didn't really like it at all. I've been meaning to pick up the next volume and give the series another chance just 'cause everybody else raves about it.
Definitely never heard of Super Gods. I tried Googling it but couldn't find pertinent information. Who's the creator/writer/artist/publisher?
You should pick up Unwritten. Its fairly new, so I bet you could pick up the back issues fairly easily. Its a Vertigo title.
Unwritten, huh? Sounds like a riff on Harry Potter. It's Vertigo though, so I'm down to give it a try. Thanks for the rec!

s For the last 2 years, Astro City has been on it's most consistent schedule ever. Busiek has been doing a 4 issue arc generally followed by a month off then a one-shot, a month off and then another 4 issue arc.
Read Planetary. 'Nuff said.
I guess I probably don't follow comics as heavily/frequently as you do, so I'm thinking in bigger blocks of years. All I know is that I've seen like, what, 15 issues in the past decade? Sure would be nice to see Astro City really pick up some steam again! I re-read issues #1 and #1/2 pretty regularly.
I do have a friend with the entire run of Planetary who's always telling me to borrow the books. Will have to do that sometime!
