Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

So what has been the last big event for Marvel and DC?

I think the last event I read was Dark Avengers.

Also, because Dredd was in theaters, I found my old copy of this:

250px-Pred_vs_Dred.jpg

Cheesy, but sooooo Dredd like awesome.

Regarding Avengers vs X-Men #12: While I liked the issue, it essentually didn't bring anything new to the story. Lately it's become apparent that the final issue of a huge event like this usually looks at the future direction of the universe, not the actual conflict at hand. Moreover, the issue was all over the place and felt disjointed. However, I do like the direction of Marvel Now, and I would really like to see Marvel go a year or two without a huge event.

Also, Avengers Academy 38 was one of the best issues of the series to date. Sucks that it only has one more issue left, I even tweet Christos Gage how sad I am that it is ending.

Animal Man and Swamp Thing were there usual awesome selves this week. I'm about at the point with Scott Snyder that I would buy anything he wrote, even if it wasn't of a subject or character I liked. Hands down the best writer in the industry. You could make the case for Waid, but he's only hit paydirt with Daredevil. Snyder has with American Vampire, Swamp Thing and Batman.
So what has been the last big event for Marvel and DC?
Marvel's one that just wrapped up is Avengers vs X-Men, it was alright, kind of felt way more long and drawn out than it needed to be, and while a few of the tie-ins were kind of neat, there was an overabundance of prisoner arcs especially in the Avengers books which weren't great and got very old fast.

DC's was Court of Owls I guess (really only the Batman issues were good, the other books were mostly meh), there was also The Culling (for a cross over story with a bunch of the teen heroes) but that was just all around terrible. Coming up DC has Death of the Family which is going to reintroduce Joker and is going to have tie-ins from all of the Batman related books, we'll see how that is (I'm guessing Batman will remain totally awesome, but we'll see how the other books handle it, since the major issue with Court of Owls is that almost all of the tie-ins from the other books felt like total side stories and didn't fit well with what was going on previously in those books).

--

I picked up the TBP of Swamp Thing yesterday and started it on the commute to work today and I'm already loving it a whole ton, I might have to start following it (I totally agree Snyder does a great job of writing stories that keep you constantly interested), which is fine because I think I'm probably going to drop some of the DC titles which I think are moving slowly or just haven't managed to stay all that interesting to me like Demon Knights and Teen Titans.

The last biggest event DC had as Flashpoint, but they are marching towards The Trinity War (whatever that is) right now. They've had some minor events like Court of Owls as and Death of the Family coming up, as icebeast said.

Currently Rotworld (between Animal Man, Swamp Thing and Frankenstein) going on right now with Rise of the Third Army starting soon with all the GL books.

I'm finding the darker, more magical side of DC's new 52 to be thoroughly more entertaining than the traditional superhero books. Stuff like Justice League Dark, I Vampire, Animal Man, Swamp Thing, and even the upcoming Amethyst (with an awesome Beowulf story) to be the cream of the crop.

How do the later volumes of Astonishing Xmen compare to the first? I thought it was alright, but won't continue the series if it stays like this.

I'm about halfway through Bone and I am enjoying it very much. Totally not what I expected. Its not the usual hyper violence I enjoy but something about how everything comes together, the characters, the setting, the art style. It all works very well together. Its one of those things where it is done so well that even if you aren't usually a fan of something like it, it can still be enjoyable.

Can't wait to read some more tonight!

You mean after the Whedon run? It hasn't been all that great in my eyes.

Yeah, that's how I felt when I read it. At first it seems a little immature or more like a comic strip, or like a lot of thought weren't put into the characters and their names, but as the story progresses it gets better. Also if you read some of the supplements, you find out more about when/how the characters and story were planned.
You mean after the Whedon run? It hasn't been all that great in my eyes.
I've only read the start of the whedon run, but it hasn't been anything too special to me.

All of Whedon's run is fantastic, to me anyways. After he left the book, it initially stopped. But they restarted it again a few years back with a couple pretty "meh" creative teams.

Haven't got a chance to read Uncanny Avengers #1 yet, but I read the rest of what I got today. And here are my impressions on a few:

The Final Fantastic Four issue from Hickman - I am really going to miss this book, but I am confident that Fraction and Bagley can continue the consistency. It ended pretty much how I expected it, too. Been pretty awesome these past few months to see Hickman tie up most of his loose-ends.

Batman #13 - Scott Snyder wasn't lying when he said he wanted to created a new side to the Joker. His debut was both fantastic and equally bone-chilling. Death of the Family is off to a pretty great start.
Scott Snyder writing another book, let alone a Superman title? I'm all over that.
It's very high risk, high reward. Simply because, he's never written a comic like Superman: Man of Steel. All of stuff has been in the dark, horror-themed crevices of the comic world, but needless to say, I am very intrigued. And it only helps that Jim Lee is penciling it.

But for me (on the comic side of things), Guardians of the Galaxy was the winner of NYCC. Sure some people might doubt Bendis, but I think this is a nice change of pace for him, away from all his Avengers background. I would be more interested in the Nova series if Jeph Loeb wasn't the scribe.

Marvel's POINT ONE came out this week, and it was largely fantastic. Some stories were pretty "meh" like the Nove and Cable stories, but the FF, GotG and overarching Fury and Coulson stories were brilliant.

Also, Hawkeye and Captain Marvel were their usual awesome selves this week. I would also like to thank my local comic shop for carrying all these Skottie Young variant covers.

I liked the Young Avengers plug too, but then I'm super excited because I love Young Avengers and adore Kid Loki so I can't wait to see them together. It was kind of weird to have Young Avengers and then also have FF with Scott Lang lamenting Stature's death (I'm really interested to see if there is going to be some explanation given on what happens to Nate Richards when he attempts to use time travel to undo her death and whether that does ultimately lead him to becoming Kang the Conqueror), beyond that sad moment I thought the FF story was really fun though and the art style fit really well.

Yeah, Mike Allred's pencils are amazing. And they'll fit the book perfectly. Same with Bagley on Fantastic Four.

Grab a copy of an Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide and see what they say.

Otherwise check eBay and see what the Completed Listings went for.

Thanks for the tip.

I found this completed listing on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Harbinger-1-CGC-9-8-NM-MINT-1-50-QR-Code-Variant-Cover-Valiant-Comics-2012-/320985266746?pt=US_Comic_Books&hash=item4abc367a3a&nma=true&si=WR%2BtY8R0mx%2BLZlCbwcarq0JD4oQ%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

I have the same one. Its on the first picture, first top row, third one from the left.

Can I sell mine for that much or do I need to get it umm certified first?

Those are all new comics. Valiant very recently started relaunching their titles and all of those titles are essentially brand new. You'll be lucky to get cover price for them and more likely to get $1 per issue. You might get $50 for the entire lot (assuming you can find someone who wants to buy the whole set). He gave them to you in the hope you would enjoy reading them. You're not going to make any money to speak of off of them.

I thought the same thing when he originally posted (thought the idea of flipping these for a Microsoft Surface was hilarious) but looking at that eBay listing, it seems he might have a pretty rare variant cover that's worth quite a bit of money.

EDIT: did a quick look at Midtown online. That comic that was listed for $400 on eBay is listed for $50 there but it's out if stock so who knows what they would charge if they had it to sell. Basically, it's up to someone to decide what they would pay for these really. It looks like you have all the rarest variant covers judging from Midtown's listings.

EDIT #2: looked at Archer and Armstrong #1 variant cover that you have on midtown and they do have that to sell and it's $106. So it does seem you might be able to make a lot of money in the right situation. It seems almost every one of these issues is a very rare variant cover edition.

That ebay listing comic was also CGC graded at 9.8 which is almost impossible to get if it's not pulled directly off the printing press.
I already have 3 versions of compendium 1. Not sure the wife would allow another one.
There are three versions of the first Compendium before this GameStop edition?

Kind of strange for a paperback book.

The big deals tend to be the hardcover books, of which the Walking Dead Omnibus volumes (as opposed to the regular Hardcovers) go for absurd amounts of money once OOP.

Signed copy, lending copy and a bathrom copy?

I also was unaware there was more than one before the GS version.

According to Wikipedia "Compendium One was also released as a limited edition hardcover in 2012 at the Emerald City Comicon and San Diego Comicon with 1000 pieces available." So I guess if those two Con editions + the standard TPB one = 3 versions?

According to this Image article there wasn't any difference in the copies sold at both Comic Cons. They just limited quantities to 100 in Seattle and 900 in San Diego. Great detective work though, now to find out the other version he has before he responds. :p
Let's say someone has neither the book nor the game episodes... Is this a no-brainer? (No pun intended)
I would say so. The game is pretty good so far. I'm on episode 4 currently. The book is the real no-brainer here. The first 48 issues are fantastic.

Price/value wise, not at all. You can get the CE bundle for $70 on 12/4. Alternatively you can get the physical disc for $30 on 12/4 and get the first compendium for $40 at Gamestop (pre-order shows it shipping 10/23 if you add it to your cart) or $34.36 (price fluctuates slightly) at Amazon (in stock for shipping). The only real reason you'd want to get the CE bundle is for the packaging and/or exclusiveness of the covers. With that said, I'm throwing my rationale out the window and intend on pre-ordering it the next time I'm in a Gamestop. I only have the first trade (covering the first 6 issues) and only follow the show and wanted to wait for a disc release of the Telltale episodes.
Sway nailed it. I have the standard cover and each of the con hardcovers (both SDCC & NYCC)
What's the binding like on those hardcovers? Did they just slap a hardcover over the standard glued pages? Or did they actually re-print the pages in signatures and sew them to a ribbon?

Is $35 the cheapest price for the first compendium? I am going to probably buy it soon since I got the first season of the game for $15 from Gamestop (PC Download). I am probably gonna read the comic first before I start the game, well at least the first compendium.

Camelcamelcamel says the lowest it's been was $29.99 last Dec. 10th. It always doesn't catch the short term price drops, but if the price does indeed drop lower, I don't expect it to be by much. I can't say much about other retailers other than Barnes & Noble known for selling comics/graphic novels. Maybe the other comic regulars can chime in on deals in general.

You can buy it on Ebay right now for 29.99. I don't think that you are going to do much better unless you find it used or clearanced from a store somewhere.

Alright, I will see if my GF is buying the collectors edition of the game or not. If not I will grab it off Amazon. $35 isn't bad, just needed a confirmation so I don't have to worry about getting bit in the ass with a price drop.

So, Matt Fraction and Salvador Larocca's legendary run on Invincible Iron Man (started around Civil War) came to an end yesteday. I'm gonna miss this creative team probably more than any other creative team on any book. It also really sucks to see Hickman leaving both Fantastic Four books and Brubaker leaving Cap.
